  • PDP faults Buhari on food security claims

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organization (PPCO), has faulted claims by President Muhammadu Buhari that Nigeria  has achieved food security and enhanced  security under his administration.

President Buhari spoke yesterday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital at the flag-off of his 2019 presidential re-election campaign.

Spokesman for  PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the President’s claim on food security was startling as “ there is hunger and starvation everywhere.”

He said:”This statement not only confirms the Buhari Presidency’s proclivity for false claim but also shows that Mr. President is completely insensitive to the plight of Nigerians.

“Nigerians were alarmed when Mr. President claimed that the nation was secure under his rule, when there are killings and daily bloodletting in various parts of our country; when insurgents who had been pushed to the fringes of the North East by the PDP administration, leading to  the conduct of elections in all the local governments in the country, have under the Buhari administration spread to other states of the north.

“While Mr. President was making his claims, insurgents had taken Baga; there are killings going on in Zamfara and our soldiers and policemen are being killed by terrorists, due to the neglect of his administration.

“President Buhari further embarrassed his office on his claims of commitment towards the war against corruption when he was surrounded at the podium, by individuals who are facing corruption allegations, including the Director General of his Campaign, Rotimi Amaechi, the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, his South South Zonal Director, Godswill Akpabio and a host of others.

“The PPCO therefore counsels President Buhari to use his failed campaign flag-off to know that no amount of crowd renting, vote-buying and intimidation of opposition can change the resolve of Nigerians to vote him out of office, come February 2019”

  • Buhari arrives Uyo for rally

President Muhammadu Buhari arrived the Victor Attah International Airport on Friday’s afternoon to a rousing welcome for flag-off of the South South zonal presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buhari’s presidential aircraft landed at the airport at about 3.40pm.

He was received by Akwa Ibom state governor Udom Emmanuel.

The President was accompanied by the National Chairman of the APC Comrade Adams Oshiomole, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Minister for Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi among others.

Quite unexpectedly, there was no protocol glitch between officials of the state government and leaders of the APC as was the case when the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari arrived the state few weeks ago.

Governor Emmanuel, who came to the airport with some members of his state executive council, departed the airport immediately after receiving the president.

Also on ground to receive Buhari were Senator Godswill Akpabio; Minister of Labour and Productivity Chris Ngige; Imo state governor Rochas Okorocha; former Borno governor, Alhaji Modu Sheriff; APC caucus member Chief Don Etiebet;  Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters(Senate), Senator Ita Enang among others

Meanwhile the rally has kicked off at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium with massive crowd recorded at the facility.

  • Buhari deserves second term, says Ashafa

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Senator Gbenga Ashafa has urged Nigerians to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in next year’s elections.

He said the president deserved a second term to enable him consolidate on his achievements in the last three and half years.

Ashafa, who represents Lagos East District in the Upper Chamber, told reporters in Lagos that Nigerians will show appreciation to the president by giving him a second term, contrary to the subject assessment of his achievements by the opposition.

He said it is gratifying that “the president has the unflinching support of our leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,”

Ashafa said Nigerians will not go back to the pre-2015 Nigeria, which was characterised by disillusionment and lack of hope.

He said: “Buhari’s achievements cannot be disputed. He has lived up to expectation. Look at the cardinal programmes he is implementing, and look at the income of Nigeria, in terms of our oil proceeds. The price of oil has dropped. Yet, the government is not relenting in fulfilling its promises.

“Let us look at the rail sub-sector. Buhari came in, he saw the need for an investment-friendly environment and legal framework. He knew that, without that, nobody will come and do business in Nigeria. That law can only come through a bill in the National Assembly. It was sponsored and it came to the committee headed by my humble self.

“Everything, including lobbying my colleagues, was done to ensure that it passed through the due process. He organised public hearings, called for experts and stakeholders’ meetings. The bill, to call a long story short, has seen the light of the day. Ditto the Regulatory Act of Transportation, and the National Transportation Commission Bill.”

Ashafa lauded President Buhari for fighting the infrastructure battle across the six regions, challenging the opposition to dispute his achievement in the critical sector.

He said: “President Buhari saw the need to renew the infrastructure battle.  He renewed the railway paths. Look at the inter-city rail system connecting Abuja to other parts of the country. It may take time before you get to your destination. But, you will get there safely. You are kept busy and safe, enjoying your ride through entertainment. For those carrying cargoes, rail system is very efficient. President Buhari saw the future and decided to swing into action.

He added: “Look at how the Chinese are now eager to do business with Nigeria. The counterpart founding have been provided and they are ready to supply the rest of the money and training our people in the art of maintaining what is put on ground. This is to boost maintenance culture. Young graduates, through the collaboration by the Nigerian and Chinese governments, were given scholarship to learn the rudiments of rail transportation in a manner that, when they come back, these young Nigerians who would have acquired the expertise can take over from the Chinese.

“Buhari has done well. He has performed than his predecessors. He inherited many problems. He has been building roads and reconstructing those bad ones previously constructed. He has been generating employment through these activities; seven thousand employments have been generated between Lagos and Ibadan through the construction of the highways. Also, from Lagos to Abeokuta.

“The governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode, is corroborating with the Federal Ministry of Transportation to ensure the success of the rail project. Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has been removing the buildings from the right of way.”

  • 2019: Buhari, Atiku camps clash in battle of integrity

The gloves were off again yesterday. President Muhammadu Buhari’s and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s camps were locked in a bitter row over the key issue of credibility.

The PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation called on President Buhari not to run in next year’s election over an alleged involvement of some people believed to be his relatives in the acquisition of shares in 9 Mobile and Keystone Bank.

But the Buhari Media Organisation fired back, accusing the PDP flag bearer of being desperate to drag the President’s name in the mud.

The war of words came on a day the National Chairman of the ruling APC, Adams Oshiomhole, wrote off the PDP as no alternative for Nigerians. He predicted that the opposition PDP will make a minimal impact in the 2019 general elections.

Oshiomhole spoke with State House correspondents after meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House in Abuja.

It also came on a day the APC announced the commencement of its presidential campaign with tomorrow’s rally at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

Atiku and his party said the President should opt out of the race on moral ground, alleging that members of his family acquired stakes in the telecom firm and two banks.

The opposition party demanded an explanation for the source of the funds used for the investments.

The PDP said that the President no longer has the moral standing to seek re-election until he has addressed the allegation.

Its candidate had, in a statement on Wednesday, accused President Buhari of soiling his hands in the alleged acquisition of shares in 9 Mobile and Keystone Bank Plc.

The PDP, through its campaign’s spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan, told the President to perish the thought of going ahead with his campaign without clearing his name.

Stating that the issue borders on President Buhari’s integrity, Ologbondiyan urged the President not to bring his exaulted office into disrepute.

He said: “This is not an issue for President Buhari’s aides to howl about in the media, it touches directly on his person, particularly his perception as a symbol of the talakawas. He must therefore address them on this issue.

“It is a norm that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. President Buhari and his family members have entangled themselves in corruption. Mr. President’s hands can no longer be said to be clean, until he proves otherwise.

“The PPCO wants Nigerians and the whole world to note that President Buhari’s refusal to personally address this matter means consent.

“We, therefore, dare President Buhari to put forth a denial on this disclosure by our candidate and we will spare no thoughts in furnishing the public with details of his corrupt activities within and outside Nigeria.”

The PDP claimed to have “full details” of how the President’s relations “paved the way” for corrupt acquisition of shares in major companies.

The party did not, however, name such relations of the President.

But the APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Isa-Onilu, brushed aside the PDP’s allegation, saying: “You may refer to my earlier statement on Atiku. He’s not saying anything new.”

Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) Niyi Akinsiju told The Nation that “Atiku is desperate to cast President Buhari in his own ignoble image of a pervasive wheeler-dealer, acknowledged for diversion of public resources to personal use and an unrepentant facilitator of cronyism in governance.

“We can’t possibly make an issue out of a virulent fiction, cooked in the imagination of a man who wished he had grown his profile both as public servant and political career in the ennobling tradition of honesty, integrity and transparency.

“The simple truth is that President Buhari has an established image that cannot be maligned, as military governor, minister, head of state, chairman of the petroleum trust fund, the President had conducted himself in the most honourable manners in the offices he had held in public trust.

“It is not now that he would join in the crass pursuit of acquisition which has become the past time of Nigerian elite like Atiku. The PDP presidential candidate should be informed that Etisalat is an international business concern and functions on the tenets of global best practices, no sale or acquisition of its shares can be done in secrecy.

“Even a hundred thousand transactions on the holdings of the group would make headlines throughout the world; it is the requirement of financial reporting standards. The same with the allegation of owning shares in Keystone Bank; the CBN, like all financial regulatory institutions across the world, insists on transparency in the profile of ownership of banks within its jurisdiction.

“Atiku and his Dubai gang should make another try with the grand lies that have become their preoccupation in the already failed pursuit of a presidential ambition that is premised inordinate predicates.”

To the APC, there is no point bandying words with Atiku. They party said it was going ahead with its campaign as scheduled today.

Isa-Onilu said the President would use the occasion to present the scorecard of the administration and its successes on its three cardinal objectives –  security, economy and, fight against corruption. Besides, he will outline his vision and programmes for Nigerians for the next four years.

Isa-Onilu said: “The launch, which signals the commencement of the campaign rallies of our great party for next year’s general elections christened: “The Next Level”, will be attended by the President Buhari; Vice President Prof Osinbajo; Party chair Adams Oshiomhole, party stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, governors, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other prominent leaders of the party, members of the National Assembly and top government officials.”

  • CUPP sues Buhari, PSC over IGP’s tenure

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has sued President Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, over the move to extend the tenure of the IGP.

Also taken to an Abuja High Court are the Nigeria Police Council and Police Service Commission (PSC).

In the suit filed on their behalf by Messrs. Obed O. Agu, the plaintiffs, is seeking an interpretation of Section 215 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Public Service Rule 020810.

They want the court to determine whether by the mandatory provision of the sections, an IGP shall only be appointed from among serving members of the police and whether any person or an officer who has attained 60 years or 35 years in service cannot be deemed to be serving member of the force.

Addressing a news conference in Owerri, the Imo State capital yesterday, over the purported moves to extend IGP’s tenure, CUPP’s First National spokesman, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Kenneth Udeze, said the IGP, who will be 60 years on January 15, 2019, having been born January 15, 1959,  is not eligible for extension  and any attempts to do so would contravene relevant sections of the constitution.

The CUPP said that moves to extend IG’s appointment after retirement is a desperate effort by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to politicise the Police Force.

The Coalition expressed fears that the fact that the IGP had not commenced necessary procedures prior to retirement had further confirmed their suspicion.

It accused some APC chieftains of being behind the plot to extend IGP’s tenure, adding that the 2019 election is a straight contest between Buhari and Atiku Abubakar, who is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)/Coalition candidate, which APC feared it could lose.

Calling on the President to direct Idris to proceed on terminal leave, and commence his mandatory one month pre-retirement workshop/training, APP and CUPP gave the respondents 30 days to reply to the summons.

  • Buhari mourns his teacher Sanda Kaita

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari yesterday offered condolences over the death of Alhaji Sanda Kaita, Magajin Rogo of Katsina, his former teacher and a retired school administrator.

In a condolence message to the Emir of Katsina, the government and people of the state, Buhari described his late metal work teacher in Katsina Secondary School as a man of highest character, who would be remembered for his efforts at inculcating hard work and technical skills in his students.

Buhari, in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said: “He was a committed and an inspirational educationist. Our prayers go out to the family of the bereaved; to the government and people of Katsina State over this irreparable loss. May his soul rest in peace.”

  • ‘Buhari should organise fasting and prayer to win war’

A cleric, Prophet Julius Babatunde Kumoluyi of the Word Bible Church, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to organise national prayer and fasting to win the war against insecurity.

He said since all human efforts of physical weapon of warfare have failed in winning the war, it was high time Nigerians sought divine help, adding that a concerted effort of national prayer and fasting, including all faith-based organisations, is the only way out.

Prophet Kumoluyi spoke during a special programme at the Ekiti branch of his church in Igbaraodo, which was organized to celebrate the Christmas for church workers.

The cleric, who lauded President Buhari for his anti-corruption fight, urged him to step up the game by ensuring that the guilty are punished.

He also urged Nigerians to be patient with the Federal Government over the need to cushion the harsh economy said to be biting hard on the citizenry, saying the country is currently passing through a phase that is mere sacrifice for a fulfilling future.

Kumoluyi said: “I appeal to the Federal Government to let us come together, all people who believe in God, pray and fast together, and we will win the war against insurgency.

“The government has used all his powers, all its physical weapons and this appears to be failing us. I assure you that if we sincerely come together, pray and fast, God will end our problems.”

  • PDP to Buhari: drop re-election bid over alleged shares in 9 Mobile, Keystone Bank

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to drop his re-election bid over his alleged involvement in the acquisition of shares in a telecom giant, 9 Mobile and Keystone Bank.

The President, the main opposition party said, no longer has the moral standing to seek re-election until he addresses the allegation.

The presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had, in a statement on Wednesday, accused Buhari of soiling his hands in the alleged acquisition of shares in 9 Mobile and Keystone Bank Plc.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, spokesman for the PDP Campaign, Kola Ologbondiyan, said the President should perish the thought of going ahead with his campaign without clearing his name.

Stating the issue borders on Buhari’s integrity, Ologbondiyan urged the President not to bring his exulted office into disrepute.

The campaign said: “The PDP Presidential Campaign challenges President Buhari to explain how his family members came about the sum of N1.032 trillion for this scandalous acquisition.

“Nigerians are not interested in mere rhetoric or attempts by the Buhari Presidency to divert public attention from the issue at hand, but demand that President Buhari, who hitherto prides himself as Mr. Integrity, squarely addresses these grave issues in person.

“This is not an issue for President Buhari’s aides to howl about in the media, it touches directly on his person, particularly his perception as a symbol of the Talakawas. He must therefore address them on this issue.

“It is a norm that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands. President Buhari and his family members have entangled themselves in corruption.

“Mr.

It added: “Our party has full details of how persons related to President Buhari, by consanguinity and affinity, have been paved the way to loot trillions of naira from government agencies for corrupt acquisition of shares in major companies, purchase expensive property within and outside Nigeria, as well as to finance their very luxury lifestyles, under Mr. President’s cover.

“In fact, no Nigerian has made more money in the last three and half years than relations of President Buhari, many of whom have found themselves controlling stupendous wealth frittered from our economy, yet our President is asking Nigerians to get ready for more hardship in the coming year.”

  • APC strikes Atiku for attack on Buhari’s anti-graft war

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar launched yesterday a blistering attack on President Muhammadu Buhari, advising him not to blame the “system” for what he called his failure to fight corruption.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate wrote to the President, commending him, “for admitting that he failed in fighting corruption.”

But the All Progressives Congress  (APC) responded in an equally derisive tone,  smacking Atiku for not facing his campaign and exhibiting “signs of depression”.

In a letter titled: “President Buhari, don’t blame the Nigerian system for your failure”, the former vice president faulted Buhari for blaming his “failure to tackle corruption head-on: on the system.

The letter, dated, yesterday, reads: “My attention has been drawn to a statement by President Muhammadu Buhari on the occasion of a Christmas homage paid on him by members of the Federal Capital Territory Community in which he blamed his inability to fight corruption on the Nigerian system.

“According to the President, his administration is slow in fighting corruption because the system is slow.

“My immediate response to this is to commend President Buhari for admitting that he has failed in fighting corruption. The President has just corroborated Transparency International, whose latest Corruption Perception Index shows that Nigeria is more corrupt today than it was under the previous administration, having moved 12 places backwards in the CPI, from 136 in 2014 to 148 this year.”

Atiku said his point of departure was in the President blaming his failure on the system.

He said: “I disagree. The system has challenges, yes, but where there is political will, the system can make progress.”

Recalling his tenure as vice president between 1999 and 2007, Atiku said: “We used that same system to speedily convict no less a personality than an Inspector-General of Police, and several others, including cabinet ministers and other high officials.

“Mr. President, the problem with your anti-corruption war is not the system. You are the problem!

“The system allows you to arrest, try and convict your former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), who was fingered in a major corruption case, but you chose to let him go scot free and you demonstrated your tolerance for his corruption by giving him a prominent role in your re-election campaign and recently welcoming him to the Presidential Villa with open arms.

“The system allowed you to arrest, try and convict Abdulrasheed Maina, the biggest-ever alleged thief in our civil service history, who is suspected of looting the pensions of millions of aged Nigerians.

“Yet, you chose not to go that route, preferring instead to recall him, reinstate and double promote him while giving him armed guards to move about.

“The system allows you to probe the $25 billion NNPC contracts awarded without due process, but you chose to bury the matter under the carpet, hoping the Nigerian people will forget about that grand scale alleged looting exposed by a leaked memo from a member of your cabinet.

“Finally, nothing in the system stops you from telling Nigerians who owns the billions found in an Ikoyi apartment.

“Based on the above statement of facts, I will not allow you to make Nigeria the scapegoat for your failure. Your failure is personal, and not national.”

Atiku faulted the President for allegedly branding Nigerian youths as lazy while defending a governor who was allegedly caught on camera receiving bribes.

Atiku went on: “The system did not stop the EFCC from charging the opposition Governor of Akwa-Ibom, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, as a co-accused in the case involving the NBA Chairman, Mr Paul Usoro (SAN). Contrast this with the treatment meted out to Governor Umar Ganduje of the ruling All Progressive Congress.”

APC’s National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu sparked Atiku for his letter . He urged the PDP presidential candidate to tell Nigerians why they should elect him rather than dissipate energy on the ruling party and its presidential candidate.

Issa-Onilu said: “The PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is exhibiting early signs of depression, resulting from obvious frustration. Consequently, he is unable to focus on his campaign. Otherwise, he should tell Nigerians why a discredited person like him should be elected as president instead of raising puerile allegations daily.

“President Buhari and APC, not his programmes for the country, appear to be his main campaign issues. Nigerians are desirous of a campaign that focuses on issues that matter to them.

“For Atiku and his PDP co-travellers, the only interest is to grab power and continue where they stopped in their avarice. The APC administration is eager to showcase the impressive achievements we have recorded in the last three and half years. This is the campaign that matters to us and this is what Nigerians are interested in.

“The trajectory is exciting as we see a brighter future shaping up. We won’t yield to the PDP’s shenanigans. The obvious strategy of the PDP is to truncate the country’s journey towards economic buoyancy and social stability. We will not play the PDP’s game. PDP is acting an anti-people’s script.

“President Buhari remains unshaken by the desperate efforts being made by Atiku and the PDP to blackmail the APC government. Everyone who was involved in corrupt practices would be brought to justice.  PDP is not offering any alternative to the progressive course this government is pursuing.

“It is actually apparent that the party is not contesting the 2019 elections to redeem itself, least of doing any good for the country, but simply to seize power to escape justice for the grevious crimes committed against the people of this country. Nigerians won’t be fooled by the rapacious PDP gang. Never!”
