  • Ondo APC leaders: we will work for Buhari’s victory

Estranged leaders of Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the chairmanship of former Deputy Governor Ali Olanusi yesterday met in Akure, the state capital, to overhaul the ruling party ahead of next year’s polls.

They called for dissolution of the state’s party executive to pave way for a caretaker committee that would work for the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari and other candidates of the party.

At the meeting were majority members and leaders who worked for the victory of President Buhari and others in 2015.

Among APC leaders were: Olanusi, Isaac Kekemeke, Chiefs M. A. Akeju, Felix Ayegbusi, Mrs Yetunde Ogundipe, Bode Sunmonu, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, Gboyega Adedipe, Mrs Kehinde Adeniran, representatives of Senator Ajayi Boroffice and Segun Abraham, Chief Adewale Omojuwa and several others.

In a communique issued after the meeting and read by Mr Adeleke Musa, the stakeholders, who said they constitute about 80 per cent of APC members in the state, said they had formed a platform that would win next year’s polls for the party in Ondo State.

The group pledged loyalty to President Buhari, APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole and its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The communique reads: “We condemn the development whereby the drivers’ union allegedly unleash terror on the party members in the state and physically attacked members of the House of Assembly in the hallowed chamber.

“We also decry the anomalies in which eight lawmakers out of the 26 members in the Assembly passed resolutions on financial budget.”

The group said the Assembly should be left alone to carry out its duties without any fear from the Executive.

The party leaders stressed that the alleged compromise of the state executive of the party was undermining the national leadership through court litigation.

They urged the national leadership to dissolve the state executive and put in place a caretaker committee to have one single party with one goal.

The concerned party leaders urged the national headquarters to note and work on what they called the sinister plot by some disgruntled officials to work against the success of the party in next year’s general elections, especially in favour of Action Alliance (AA).

  • We’ll ensure Buhari’s victory in 2019, say ex-militants

Ex-militants under the platform of the Coalition of Progressive Niger Delta ex-militants (CPNDE) yesterday rose from an emergency meeting in Lagos with a resolve to work for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ex-militants said their decision to support Buhari’s second term bid was based on his efforts at deepening peace and stability in the Niger Delta by initiating meaningful projects and enhancement of human capital development through the Presidential Amnesty Programme.

In a statement signed by its President Edeinowei Galabagalaba and Secretary, Gbobgo Eduobor, the group dismissed threats by a self-styled General Isreal Eshanekpe Akporodo to work against President Buhari’s re-election. It said Akporodo’s threat was an effort at seeking political patronage.

“The so-called National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-agitators which Akporodo claims to lead, is a phantom group merely on the pages of newspapers to promote his personal interest. He lacks the capacity to drive a process that would negatively affect the political fortunes of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Niger Delta region.

We are resolute in our decision to ensure victory for Buhari in the Niger Delta in the 2019 presidential election. Towards this end, we have commenced consultative meetings to forge a common front.

The Coalition of Progressive Niger Delta Ex-Militants, comprising several genuine camp leaders and their foot soldiers affirm our unwavering support for President Buhari”.

  • ‘Kwara youths will ensure Buhari’s victory in 2019’

Kwara youths under the aegis of All Progressives Youth Forum (APYF) have promised to work for the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 election.

The group urged the Buhari administration to pay special attention to the state to capture it from a retrogressive government.

Coordinator of the forum Tunde Salau hailed the reappointment of Minister of Transportation Rotimi Ameachi as the Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation for 2019 elections.

He said: “Ameachi’s re-appointment as Director-General of the Buhari Campaign Organisation is a recognition of his doggedness, consistency and commitment towards the success of the President Buhari-led administration, coupled with his achievements as the minister of transportation.

“We urge Ameachi and his team to pay attention to Kwara State when campaign activities fully kick off. The people, especially the youths, are tired of the retrogressive style of leadership in the last 16 years.

“APYF and its members also assure Ameachi of their readiness to mobilise youths for the party’s victory in 2019.”

  • Buhari’s victory in 2015, a political revolution’ – Dalung

    Buhari’s victory in 2015, a political revolution’ – Dalung

Youth and Sports Development Minister, Solomon Dalung, said President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory in 2015 has proved that one can win election in Nigeria without having money.

Dalung, at a meeting with officials of the Nigerian Embassy in New York, spoke of a brewing political revolution against ‘god-fatherism’ in the nation’s political space.

“There is hope for Nigeria. The victory of President Buhari, up till now, not many Nigerians have understood it; it was a political revolution,” he said.

“What it has brought is that you can contest and win election even when you do not have money. “God-fatherism’ was instituted to control elected officials so that they would not go beyond control.”

He described god-fatherism as a “political servitude where you are tested to determine your loyalty. The thing is that without a god father, they believe you can’t be controlled.”

The minister was in New York for the Seventh Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Youth Forum at the UN Headquarters where he delivered a paper on: ‘The role of youth in building sustainable and resilient communities’.

He added:”The ‘Not too Young to Run’ is an advocacy that is sending strong signals to political lords that they had overstayed their welcome; either they give way or they will be forced out.”

The minister blamed those he called “urban gorillas” whom he said were in charge of the country’s political machinery for manipulating the system.

“At 53 years, they still call me a small boy,” he said, saying he had contested elections several times and won but was deprived by the ‘urban gorillas’.

The minister also said he brought the All Progressives Congress (APC) to Plateau but suffered as an orphan because he did not have a god-father.

According to him, his advocacy is to liberate the young people, reorient the mindset of many Nigerian youths that have been enslaved.

He also called on young people to understand the political system they were coming into so as to strategisebetter.

According to Dalung, Nigeria is making steady progress in infrastructure, economy and security and called for unity.

He said:”We have the best form of selfless ministers in this era. As ministers, most of us do not have houses but we live in rented apartments in Abuja.

“Some of us lived in boys quarters before we got apartments because people were asking for N1.5 million as rent.

“I would have even preferred to stay in Gwagwa but we were told we could not for obvious reasons,” he said.

Earlier, Nigeria’s Ambassador/Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Samson Itegboje, commended the federal government for the steady progress in the areas of economy, infrastructure, fight against insurgency and anti-corruption.

The Nigerian ambassador pledged that the missions’ would continue to bring their expertise to bear on the international stage so as to lift the flag of Nigeria high among the comity of nations.

  • El-Rufai under fire over Tinubu, S/West’s role in Buhari’s victory

El-Rufai under fire over Tinubu, S/West’s role in Buhari’s victory

The controversial memo sent to President Muhammadu Buhari by Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State is still generating reactions from within and outside the ruling party. El-Rufai had, in the leaked memo, complained about certain things in the way the country and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were being administered.
Barely 48 hours after the Kaduna governor’s visit to the presidential villa where he took a swipe at unnamed presidency insiders who he alleged leaked the memo, which was written as a private correspondence to the president, reactions are again trailing his comment on the contributions of the various legacy groups within the party to its victory at the 2015 presidential election.
In the memo, El-Rufai had posited that, “the Lagos group more or less led by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the most organised and proactive. This group made a key contribution in our electoral success, but like all groupings it naturally exaggerates its role in order to increase its influence in the coming administration. The group will use the media to promote its own “GMB Boys” or suggest “Northerners” of their choice that they think would do their bidding.
“Some already are boasting that they will choose the next petroleum minister and the executive leadership of the NNPC. They will seek direct control or great influence over key economic portfolios, including agencies involved in revenue generation (NNPC, FIRS, Customs, etc.) law enforcement (Attorney General, EFCC, etc.) and financial services regulation (CBN, SEC, PenCom, etc.). This group will seek an alliance with some GMB family members to help strengthen their pre-eminent position in these areas.”
The memo, according to some revelations that trailed it, was written by the Kaduna governor, and received by the President, sometime in 2015, before the nomination of ministers by President Buhari. Consequently, many of those who spoke with The Nation accused El-Rufai of fanning the ember of discord with his argument.
A cross section of prominent Nigerians including elder statesmen and politicians who spoke with The Nation, expressed dissatisfaction with El-Rufai’s attempt to water down the roles played by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the South West in Buhari’s victory at the polls and hoped that the Kaduna governor as well as those commenting on his controversial memo will not create problems for President Buhari and the ruling party.
Former Governor of the old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, who is also the National Chairman of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), cautioned El-Rufai and his likes against causing unnecessary friction within the ruling party. According to him, it is very true and undeniable to say that Asiwaju Tinubu and the South-West won the presidency for the APC in 2015.
While admitting that the various legacy groups played significant roles in the party’s victory, Balarabe insisted that Buhari could not have won the presidency without the support of Tinubu and his camp. He therefore warned against any attempt by anybody or group within the party to deny Tinubu his dues.
“It is undeniably true that Asiwaju Tinubu and the South-West won the presidency for the APC in 2015. Buhari could not have won the presidency without the support of Tinubu and his camp. I therefore want to say that nobody or group within the party should attempt to deny Tinubu his dues.
“Come to think of it, it is actually Tinubu and his people in the South West that galvanised the entire nation to support the candidacy of Buhari in the last election. They led the way and others followed. It is therefore a statement of fact that Tinubu facilitated the eventual victory of APC and Buhari in that election. So, I disagree with El-Rufai’s position on that matter.
Speaking further, the former Kaduna State governor averred that it is not for El-Rufai or anybody to say whether the South West has been fairly treated by the current administration. According to him, it is left for Tinubu and his people to appraise the situation and decide whether they’ve gotten their fair share of the victory.
“I will say it is up to Tinubu and his associates to say whether he has been fairly treated by his party and the government he help so much to install. It is not for me to say that. It is also not for El-Rufai to say that. I don’t know what Tinubu asked for or what he got in the arrangement. Only him and his people will know that,” he said.
Also, frontline PDP chieftain and former gubernatorial candidate in Lagos State, Mrs. Remi Adiukwu, asked El-Rufai to tell Nigerians the role he played in the victory of both the ruling party and President Buhari in the 2015 general election before his statement about Tinubu can be taken seriously.
The female politician described the Kaduna governor as someone who is fond of seeking attention at all times. “That is the reason why he usually talks balderdash,” she said while submitting that rather than contributing to Buhari’s victory, El-Rufai merely benefited from the political success that the likes of Tinubu turned APC into in 2015.
“I will want El-Rufai to tell Nigerians the role he played in the victory of his party and President Buhari in the 2015 general election before I can take his statement about Tinubu serious. I’ve known the Kaduna Governor as someone who is fond of seeking attention at all times. That is the reason why he usually talks balderdash. There is no way Buhari could have been President without Tinubu or the South West behind him.
“El-Rufai contributed nothing to Buhari’s victory even in his home state of Kaduna. He merely benefited from the political success that the likes of TInubu turned APC into in 2015. Without Buhari and the APC platform in 2015, he wouldn’t have even contested not to talk of winning the election. He benefited from the politics of Asiwaju Tinubu. He is not qualified to question Tinubu’s place in the party or government,” Adiukwu said.
Former Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, said while it is true that all parties to the victory played one role or the other in the presidential victory of the ruling party, it is on record that Tinubu and his people from the South West worked exceptionally hard for the emergence of Buhari as President in 2015.
“All the people involved played their parts well. I think victory should not be attributed to one person or group. But it is important to state that Tinubu worked hard to see Buhari win the election. The fact that he agreed to the merger that led to the formation of APC should give him a lot of credit. They should give him credit. I think El-Rufai is talking too much. He should know better than to say such things.
“The South West played the major role in APC’s victory in 2015. Buhari cannot win the presidency without the support he got from the southwest and this was made possible largely by Tinubu. El Rufia should not create disaffection within his party with such claims as he is said to be making about the role of TInubu and the South West.
“Tinubu is the arrowhead of APC’s emergence as a ruling party. As to whether he has been fairly treated, I will say yes. But if someone like El Rufia is now trying to water done his importance in the ruling party, or in the government he laboured so hard to put in place, he is not being treated with the respect he deserve,” he said.
When asked for his take on the raging controversy, Afenifere chieftains and frontline PDP leader, Chief Ebenezer Babatope declined comment, saying, “Thank you very much for interviewing me. But the matter at hand is not a PDP affair; it is strictly an APC issue. As such, it is of no interest to me. I can only wish them good luck.”
But fellow Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin sees the issue differently. According to him, it is only an ingrate that will make the type of statement being credited to Governor El-Rufai. Odumakin accused APC leaders of denying the South West its rightful place in the scheme of things after the region worked hard to install Buhari as President in 2015.
“It is only an ingrate that will make such a statement. Buhari contested three times before 2015 and though he won in the north, he lost the presidency. Buhari will always win in the north. But he won the presidency in 2015 because he won 52 percent of the votes in the South West. That was what gave him victory. If the South West had voted the way South East and South-South voted, APC couldn’t have won the presidency.
“Sadly, apart from ministerial slots which is statutory, South West have not been fairly treated by APC and Buhari. Look at the security chiefs, except for the Chief of Defence Staff, which is even ceremonial, all other service chiefs are northerners. And that is also the situation in many escorts of the country today.
“The contribution of the likes of Asiwaju Tinubu to the victory of President Buhari during the last presidential election have not been properly appreciated. And when one now begin to hear the type of statements said to have emanated from Governor El Rufia of Kaduna state, it shows the party is unappreciative of Tinubu’s sacrifice for the APC,” Odumakin explained.

  • Buhari’s victory rescued Nigeria, say Aregbesola, Ajimobi

Buhari’s victory rescued Nigeria, say Aregbesola, Ajimobi

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari was the culmination of the progressives struggle since Independence.

His Oyo State counterpart, Abiola Ajimobi, noted that Nigerians faced the greatest challenge to their existence in the 15 years of misrule and maladministration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said they opted for Change and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last general elections.

Ajimobi spoke as the Chairman of the first distinguished lecture of the Department of Political Science and Diplomatic Studies, Bowen University, Iwo, Osun State.

Ajimobi observed that Buhari’s election was the second attempt by Nigerians to call for change.

He added that the first attempt by Nigerians was the June 12, 1993 election won by the late MKO Abiola, which was anulled.

The governor argued that for a people to collectively opt for change, the socio-political situation in such a place must have been totally intolerable.

He said the hopes of Nigerians were very high when the country transited to civilian rule in 1999 but shortly afterwards the PDP-led administration thwarted the hopes and aspiration of the people by its ineptitude.

According to him, “no sooner had the PDP led administration began governance than the trait exhibited by the potentates of the new government and the ruling party that midwifed the government could be seen as administrative ineptitude, lack of vision, unwarranted aggrandisement cum corruption.

“However, the last straw that broke the camel’s back was the inability of the PDP led government to guarantee security. All these boiled down to bad leadership.”

Aregbesola said most of the sustained attacks against his person and government in the media was because he stopped the PDP’s political machinations in the Southwest.

The governor praised the university for fulfilling its role of idea generation and dissemination, through the interaction between town and gown.

He added that Buhari won despite everything done to distract him before and during the campaigns.

The governor recounted that after the APC lost the Ekiti State governorship election last year, the PDP’s evil machinery working in full tandem with all the security agencies, was moved to Osun.

Aregbesola noted that the calculation then was that if Osun could be seized, the Southwest would have been captured by the PDP.

According to him: “After I won the governorship election, it became clear that our party had become unstoppable and President Buhari would become president.

“We thank God that despite everything, we are where we are today.”

  • ‘Buhari’s victory is like I won the Grammy’

‘Buhari’s victory is like I won the Grammy’

Ojetayo Oluwadamilare  a.k.a Ajakaye in the music world, hails from Oke-Igbo in Ondo State.A graduate of the College of Agriculture in Lafia, Nasarawa State, he is the brain behind ‘the Sai Buhari’theme song. In an interview with DAMISI OJO, the celebrated song writer and composer seeks compensation for his initiative from APC leaders and President Muhammadu Buhari.

He answers Ojetayo Oluwadamilare but his stage name is “Ajakaye,” which signifies the philosophy to use  his musical talent to globally win any war.Today,Ajakaye’s name is making waves as a politically-conscious Nigerian song writer, artiste and musician.

How did you become a musician in spite of your career as an agriculturist?

Like every other African child with various potential, and as a toddler then,I was told how I started responding to anything with sound and music orientation, and my parents also told me that the music craft is a talent that runs in the blood of every Oje(member of the masquerade society). This potential developed in me and continue to grow and overshadow all other potentials embedded in me.

What prompted your linkage with the “Sai Buhari” theme song?

That theme song is just my own way of thinking aloud and making my own artistic and critical contribution to positively impact on Nigeria. But as one of those Nigerian youths affected adversely by the mal-administration, mis-governance, ineptitude, corruption and political hostilities of the ruling PDP stakeholders in the past 16 years, I had  to do a clinical appraisal of the political situation and come up with that rendition. The Sai-Baba theme song was produced by the same Paul Runz and it was released on House-2 Entertainment Recording label. The man is today Nigerian’s oldest Hip Hop Artiste with stage name Dibio Dombolo.

What other impact do you think “Sai Buhari” song has on the APC campaign?

I can authoritatively tell you that in showbiz attainment and in the socio-political history of Nigeria,no political theme song has received such unprecedented admirers like the Sai Buhari song has. Even, the MKO Hope’93 theme song cannot match  it.The APC 2015 Presidential theme song officially released on-line in early November but became a hit and went viral immediately it was released on-line on Saturday, November 22,2014 by Naija loud speaker.com(NLS).This was preceded by another on-line review done on the www.abdusidiqu.com where the song was given serious review and attention as the writer predicted the viral effect the song will have in due course. The page has 36 tweets,50 Fb likes while it reached their 8,495 fb fans and 2,771 twitter followers simultaneously. Even, the selective and highly controversial Sahara Reporter.com could not overlook the creativity package, the ideological work, posted it and it also nearly shut down their site as the song received over 2003 likes and over 708 comments.

With your successful outing, there is no doubt that APC leaders would have rewarded your robust initiative, let us know your gains.

No compensation at all yet.The only thing the song has done for me is increasing my adrenalin in form of threats from the PDP supporters who at every opportunity tried to scare me,my family members and fans over the Sai-Buhari Theme song. The glory and fame that were expected to have been associated with that effort had also increased their envy.Let me state it here that the PDP supporters in the corporate world have been threatening me with fire and brimstone that if Gen.Muhammadu Buhari lost the election that would be the end of my musical career. So,you can see that the success recorded by Buhari/Osinbajo as President-elect and Vice-President elect is like I have won the prestigious Grammy and AMAA awards combined.

Are you saying APC leaders are yet to recognise you for your musical exploits on the victory of Buhari?

Yes,I can say it boldly that APC has not compensated me on Sai-Buhari Theme song.As you said, settling and acknowledgement are in relative terms. The only thing I am so happy about is that the song has continued to increase my physical and on-line rating as one of the best writers,a notable singer and performer in Nigeria. While I was toiling day and night to write and produce the song, some reactionary forces within the APC rank and file tried all they could to frustrate my efforts, but to God be the glory, it was a successful outing.

What efforts have you made to seek relevance and get APC leaders to appreciate you?

I have made frantic efforts to see the Ondo State Chairman of the APC,Isaac Kekemeke, who tried his best as a follow-up to the songs I composed for Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, during the 2012 governorship campaign under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria(ACN).I also met the articulate spokesman of the APC,Alhaji Lai Mohammed whose promises I am still awaiting.Alhaji Mohammed exchanged his e-mail contact with me when I contacted him on phone. He spoke like a father to me for over 10 minutes and gave assurances that I will be rewarded as soon as possible.I also contacted APC leaders like Governor Rauf Aregbesola and Hon Bola Ilori. I have no doubt that these men of integrity will look into my case.

What do you actually want from the APC now?

The joy of every artiste is to be paid gratification for his musical exploits.I want the APC leaders to allow me perform on stage for the President-elect,Gen Buhari during his inauguration in Abuja on May 29.They can do me this favour since I was not allowed to be on the national campaign tour of Buhari/Osinbajo when it lasted, though my songs were blasted by different Deejays on their gramophone nationwide.I believe I deserve the recognition and reward.

Buhari‘s victory: Hashimu treks to Abuja

Suleiman Hashimu, now called ‘the traveler’ who promised to trek from anywhere he was to Abuja if Gen. Muhammadu Buhari wins the presidential election, arrived Abuja yesterday evening after trekking for many weeks.

The native of Katsina State was in Lagos when Gen. Buhari was announced the president-elect. Hasheem left Lagos at about 5am the day after Gen. Buhari was announced winner and arrived in Ibadan around 6pm.

Despite several warnings from friends,  he continued his journey.

In Ilorin, people escorted him for several miles until he stopped at Oloru. He received a rousing welcome  in Jebba, where unlike in other villages he met people who had heard of him.

About 20 people set off with him from Jebba and after some miles turned back but the other two were strong-minded. They encountered armed robbers close to Mokwa, although fortunately he had already met one of them in Jebba, and the would-be robber ended up giving him N200 for water in satchet.

He continued his trip from Mokwa – Kudu – Kutigi –Bida – Suleja and arrived Abuja yesterday.

People have welcomed him as a real hero. They took photographs with him and asked for his autograph.

The journey, according to Google map, is over 700kilometre.

  • Lessons of Buhari’s victory

With God all things are possible. If men were God, something would have happened, but men are not God and can never be. The above assertion underscores the victory of the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) in the just-concluded presidential poll. The outcome of poll is a big lesson and eye opener to every Nigerian irrespective of religion, status and tribe. Buhari is today the Abraham Lincoln of Nigeria. His tenacity and resilience paid off at last. Despite initial odds and frustration, Buhari even at his age never lost hope or confidence in Nigeria as a country.

He kept faith and hope that the country can be salvaged. His election victory is unique and unprecedented in the sense that for the first time in the country’s political history, an incumbent president was defeated in an election by opposition candidate. It happened at a time pseudo analysts and prophets of doom had prophesied that it was impossible because of power of incumbency.

Ahead of the presidential poll, they vowed that Buhari would never become president of the country again. They threatened that instead of handing over to Buhari, the country would be better divided. They wished Buhari dead and alleged that he was sick and cannot rule the country well. They said he was brain-dead and cannot recognize anything even his phone numbers.

Everything was thrown into the mud to demonise the person of Buhari and other members of his party. It was a campaign of calumny like never before. Religion, ethnicity, and primordial sentiments were thrown up. Our great country Nigeria was torn along ethnic and religious lines. A dangerous political precedent was laid and political sycophants who claimed to be leaders were championing and promoting them, insulting our collective sensibility with our patrimony all for selfish reasons.

Nigerians were being brainwashed with all sort of lies and gimmicks. But they all forgot that Nigerians know better and would take wise decision when the chips are down. Not even the sudden shift in the date of the presidential poll discouraged Nigerians because they have bought into the “change” campaign mantra of the APC and saw Buhari as a brand and incorruptible.

I have always asked this question; how many of us were like Buhari? We are in a clime where what matters most is wealth and power, not how they were acquired or gotten. No wonder politics has become a do or die affair because most politicians have no second address and lack clear vision, and integrity. But for Buhari, what worked for him in the election is his integrity which he had built over the years.

In trying to demonise Buhari during the campaign, his political opponents could not point at any wealth he amassed, while in office as Head of State or chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund. He lives a modest and humble life and never believed in amassing ill-gotten wealth. Even as a former Head of State, Buhari has no house of his own in Abuja or overseas. All these good virtues were to his advantage during his party primaries and presidential election. Even the political class and the APC chieftains saw that there was need for urgent change in the country’s political leadership to save the country from total collapse. Having seen the direction the country was going, sacrifices were made by the political class and Nigerians who realized that if the country collapses, they and their kiths and kin are not safe, and posterity will not forgive them. Besides, they have no other country of their own except Nigeria. So in Buhari, they saw the alternative and better option. That was the reason they voted for him en masse during poll.

Today Nigerians have decided and Buhari is the president-elect. So the questions are; where are the influence peddlers who are always bestriding the corridors of power, holding the country ransom, dictating who gets what for their selfish reasons. Where are the praise singers and the shameless godfathers who vowed that Buhari would never be president of the country again? Where are the prophets of doom who prophesied otherwise about Buhari’s victory? Where are those who wished Buhari dead and said that he is brain-dead? Where are the Aso Rock cabals who hijacked and misled President Jonathan for so long? Have they seen how transient political power could be? For those that they have ears, let them hear and for those who have eyes, let them see. The change has come and the PDP’s boast that they would rule the country has become a mere talk and a ruse.

I know just like every other Nigerian that the cabal would be disappointed for not being consulted by the President before conceding defeat to Buhari after the poll. But the cabal should bury their heads in shame because President Jonathan acted wisely by conceding defeat, having realised that they are deceits and saboteurs masquerading as political leaders. President Jonathan has proved that he understood the idiom “once bitten, twice shy.”

By President Jonathan’s action, he has written his name in the political history of the country to the shame, and disappointment of the political hawks in who believed that the corridors of power are their ancestral homes. It is obvious that if President Jonathan had acted as expected by these political hawks or merchants by rejecting the poll result and something unusual emanates from it, they will be the first to abandon and blame him when the chips are down.

The victory has renewed my faith in the people of Nigerians that at any crucial moment in the country’s history, they would do the needful to keep the country together. It has also shown that Nigerians are not dociles and dullards as some opportunistic and accidental leaders have believed and thought before now. It has revealed that henceforth no elected leader should take the people’s power for granted on any account. It has underscored the point that history could be made or marred one day and nothing is permanent except change. It has proved that Nigeria is growing and maturing politically and democratically, and that with a square peg in a square hole, the country’s electoral process will be better off.

For the president-elect, Buhari, to whom much is given, much is expected. The massive support given to him in the election by Nigerians is a clear testimony of the people’s confidence in him. So for this reason, Buhari’s government cannot afford to disappoint Nigerians. Obviously, there are great challenges ahead for Buhari and his party, but one good thing is that Buhari and his party men are not strangers in Nigeria. They understand the enormity of the challenges confronting the country and are in a vantage position to provide workable solution.

The in-coming government must first of all tackle the monster called corruption headlong and forthwith. It is the greatest enemy of the country since independence and successive governments have treated it with kid gloves. It is root of the country’s numerous problems. Expected to be sanitized by the new government is the country’s electoral process that has been characterized with fraud and irregularities. The process should be made to be transparent, free and fair. Public office holders whether elected or appointed should be made to accountable to the people, and not to themselves as it is presently. Meritocracy and integrity must be basis for choice of our public leaders and not ethnicity, religion or other primordial sentiments.

I believe that with Buhari’s integrity, sincere and selfless approach to governance, the country can be restored to its past glory. No sacrifice is too much at this point by both the political leaders and followers. So all hands must be on deck to salvage the country as there was no loser and winner in the poll. • ‘Buhari’s victory has vindicated us’

The integrity faction of the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), led by Chief Tuesday Onoge, has described President-elect Muhammadu Buhari’s victory as a vindication of its leadership foresight.

UPU’s faction  Acting National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Mumakai Unagha, said yesterday, all the Onoge leadership had been saying was that the Urhobo would not work with an opposition government, adding that the Uvwiamughe Declaration favoured the APC.

He said the Urhobo could not afford to be in the opposition but would join the winning team to ensure the victory of Olorogun O’tega Emerhor on April 11.

The secretary called on Chief Great Ogboru of the Labour Party to have a rethink and work with Emerhor.

Unagha said what matters is victory. He hailed Nigerians for voting Muhammadu Buhari, who he said will check the social vices and corruption ravaging the country today.
