The Kano State government will spend about N4.7 billion to build and equip 44 garment centres across the state, Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has said.

The move, he maintained, is to create wealth and alleviate poverty.

Kwankwaso said 37 micro finance banks have been established by the government to facilitate sources of finances for Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) in the state.

  • Imo to build relief market

    Imo to build relief market

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has said that a relief market would be built in Owerri to accommodate traders who had no shops at the Eke-Ukwu Market.

Okorocha, who made the announcement when he paid an unscheduled visit to Eke-Ukwu and New Market in Owerri, promised to construct all roads in the markets.

The governor also promised the traders that government would provide electricity, bore holes and street lights in the markets to boost their businesses.

He said that with the construction of the relief market, street trading would be abolished in Owerri, since traders without shops in other markets would now be accommodated.

Okorocha also told traders at the new market that government would re-roof the market before the rains set in.

The governor admitted that street trading was a big problem in the state capital.

He promised to supervise the election of the Owerri Market Traders’ Association, scheduled for next month.

He said the two markets had been granted community status and that a liaison officer would be appointed to liaise between them.

On waste management in the markets, he directed the traders to buy cellophane bags for the collection and disposal of wastes generated on daily basis.

The governor said that a football competition would be organised for markets in the state , adding that a new bus and two million naira had been set aside for winners of the trophy.

  • Obodo: Keshi should build Eagles around Mikel

Obodo: Keshi should build Eagles around Mikel

It is a shame that the career of Italy based player Christian Obodo has nosedived. Touted as Nigeria’s first true box-to-box midfielder, Obodo is now a free agent after he was released by Udinese this past summer.

While the Super Eagles starting eleven against Burkina Faso in a few days time is shrouded in mystery, Obodo has advised Eagles gaffer Stephen Keshi to build his team around Chelsea ace John Obi Mikel.

”I think Keshi should build his team around Mikel. He is a top quality player in the team. He is the biggest player in the team. His skills and qualities will make the team do well in the Nations Cup. He should be made to play the pivotal role in the team,” Obodo told Brila FM.

Christian Obodo, who is credited with 21 caps for the National Team, played at the 2006 African Cup of Nations, scoring in a group match against Zimbabwe.

  • Mazda to build cars for Toyota

Mazda Motor Corporation, will build cars for Toyota Motor Corporation at a Mexico plant currently under construction.

Production of the Toyota-branded vehicle, a sub-compact based on the Mazda2, will begin in mid-2015 at a rate of 50,000 units per year, the companies said in a statement last Friday. The agreement will help Toyota strengthen its lineup in North America and increase production efficiency at Mazda, the companies said.

Mazda is selling assets, shifting production to outside Japan and improving gas mileage on models including the CX-5 sport utility vehicle (SUV) and Mazda6 sedan to reach its first annual profit in five years. The plant in Mexico, scheduled to start production by the year ending March 2014, will help Mazda counter a strengthening yen which makes Japanese-made cars less profitable.

Toyota will invest “an appropriate portion” of production equipment costs and development costs related to the Toyota vehicle, and also costs related to the plant’s capacity increase, it said in the statement. The vehicles will be sold through Toyota dealerships, it said.

Toyota shares fell 0.5 per cent at its close in the Tokyo Stock Exchange, before the companies announced the agreement. Mazda shares were unchanged.

Mazda’s new plant, with an annual capacity of 140,000 units, will be located in Salamanca City, Guanajuato State. The company will build Mazda2 and Mazda3 vehicles at the factory.

Mazda exported 75 percent of the cars it made in Japan this year, making it more vulnerable to gains in the yen than other Japanese automakers.

The minister noted that the housing programme for the teachers would succeed because the Nigerian Union of Teachers and the Mortgage bankers have been carried along from the onset.

“The Jonathan administration is committed to ensuring that teachers who are critical to national development have access to affordable and decent houses”, he said.

The Secretary General of NUT, Comrade Ikpe Johnny Obong commended Wike for taking proactive measures to ensure that teachers have their own houses.

He said the NUT supports the housing scheme, noting that the union will cooperate with the bank and the Federal Ministry of Education to actualise the programme.

The acting Managing Director of Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Newman Odia assured the teachers that the bank was committed to the scheme.
