  • Fire at OAU union building

    Fire at OAU union building

The Students’ Union Building of the Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State almost went up in flames last Thursday as electric surge from the Computer Room in the building sparked fire.

The quick intervention of the institution’s fire men saved the day.

Passers-by, who noticed emission of smoke from the building, called emergency number of the fire service.

The head of OAU Fire Service, Mr Ibrahim Muideen, led the fire-fighting operation, climbing and axing the affected section to prevent re-ignition.

The building was renovated about three years ago after a violent, following the introduction of a new acceptance fee. Students’ unionism was proscribed after the protest and since then, access to the building has been restricted.

Speaking after the fire was put out, Muideen said he mobilised firemen immediately his office got a distress call from students.

He said: “We got a call on our emergency number at 12:17pm, informing us that the Students’ Union Building was on fire. We immediately rushed to the scene. On getting there, we saw smoke coming out of the computer room but since all entrances had been sealed, we could not move into the building. We had to use ladder to access the affected room and removed all burning materials.”

Muideen said his men discovered that all cables in the building were not affected by the fire but added that the inferno may have been caused by “spontaneous combustion” which may occur as result of heat.

He said the fire unit was planning to establish a fire-fighters’ club in the university to teach students how to fight fire.

  • 10 commitments for building high performance teams

10 commitments for building high performance teams

High performance is very critical to the survival of any organisation or individual. This is why I want us to examine this text titled: “Ten Commitments for Building High Performance Teams”. It is written by Dr. Tom Massey, a corporate leadership trainer and coach with about 20-year experience in optimising individual and organisational performance.

Team performance, according to Massey, is only as strong as the collective performance of members. This consultant says when committed, collaborative individuals with complementary skills work together, synergy takes place because total performance is greater than the sum of the individual parts.

Massey adds that the 10 commitments outlined in this text will help you get the right people in the right positions to develop a focused, values-driven, high performing team. This author advises you to learn how to get every member to take personal ownership of your team’s success by creating shared purpose, values and strategic goals.

Massey says through this text, you will be able to gain insights into how to set up profit-sharing, establish work standards and correct performance problems in addition to creating a learning organisation that is able to adapt to the challenges of the next century.

This text is segmented into ten chapters. Chapter one is titled: “Commit to getting the right people ‘on the bus’”. In the author’s words, “When you have the right people on the bus, with the right skills and a high-level commitment, regardless of whether you are a business manager or coach of a sports team, you will be successful.”

Massey says the first thing to start when picking the right people for your team is to develop job descriptions based on factors of success for each position. “Great coaches and managers develop every position as if it is the most important position on the team, and it is. Remember the adage: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link,” he adds.

According to Massey, factors of success may be defined as the skills and behaviour needed to perform a job successfully within the culture operated by the team.

He says these factors include more than simply the skills requirements. Skills requirements are essential characteristics or experiences every team member must have in order to qualify for his or her respective position. However, there are other behavioural standards required to ensure team success, says the author.

Chapter two focuses on commitment to greeting everyone ‘on the same page’. Massey educates that established rules provide structure. He adds that people know what is expected of them and how they will engage one another in day-to-day interaction. The author says conflicts commonly arise in teams because of failed expectations caused by assumptions of one or more people.

Massey discusses the issue of creating a team charter. He says a team charter is a written document used to define the team’s purpose/vision, values and goals, adding that the charter will also assist to serve as a contract between the team and the organisation. The author expatiates that charters may be developed by top management, then presented to team members; or teams can create their own charters and present them to top management. Regardless of who creates the charter, it is absolutely imperative that top management should give full endorsement to provide the team the needed direction and authority, says Massey.

In chapters three to six, this author X-rays concepts such as committing to creating a learning environment; committing to sharing the profits and losses; committing to turning around poor performance; and committing to dancing with ‘those who brought you’.

Chapter seven is based on the subject matter of committing to win. According to this author here, if you want your team to reach the level of high performance, you must transform those moments of fear and uncertainty into opportunities for ordinary people to achieve extraordinary results.

Massey says the late John Wooden, hall-of-fame coaching legend once told his UCLA basketball team thus: “Men, the team that makes the most mistakes tonight will win the game!” Massey adds that Wooden encouraged his players to take risks and make more mistakes because he knew that you miss 100 per cent of the shots you never take.

Massey advises you against allowing naysayers a foothold in your team to perpetuate a story of negativity. He says the story heard is the story told. Massey adds that you should tell a different story, one that perpetuates a ‘play to win’ mindset that will allow you to create anything you want.

In chapters eight to 10, the author discusses concepts such as committing to growing through adversity; committing to having fun; and committing to playing large.

It must be stressed that the concepts X-rayed in this book are deep and rich in value. On style, this text is on the high rung of the ladder. Apart from the simplicity of the language, the mode of presentation is logical and highly intelligent. What’s more, Massey employs classical allusions, starting every chapter with a quote from a legendary figure, just to achieve conceptual reinforcement and ensure easy understanding on readers’ part. He adds: “Practical Application” segment at the end of each chapter where additional tips are offered, to ensure practical involvement of readers.

However, chapters five and seven need to be harmonised for conceptual compactness.

Generally, Massey’s intellectual efforts in this text are commendable. If you want your organisation to surpass previous achievements by building highly-effective teams, then this text is a must-read and the tips must-apply.

  • ‘I don’t believe in building other people’s empires forever’

‘I don’t believe in building other people’s empires forever’

Children and the youths obviously are the pillars of every society. It is, therefore, important to catch them young, provide for their needs as well as build a solid foundation upon which they can build upon later in life. A number of people have been helping to mould the lives of the younger generation and one of such people is Tosin Allen.

In a chat with Morakinyo Abodunrin, Tosin Allen talks about her passion for orphans, physically challenged and vulnerable children in the society. Networking with other individuals, organisations and donor agencies her organisation, Audrey Allen Foundation, looks for ways to access opportunities, grants and outright investments in scholarship as well as funding and provision of facilities needed for better. learning and sound education.

I know you are involved in charity and humanitarian works, tell us about your foundation?

I’m most delighted to introduce to you the Audrey Allen Foundation for Children. The Audrey Allen Foundation, AAF, is an NGO with affiliation with about 25 partner NGOs that are only into child-related issues such as polio, HIV and AIDS, child prostitution, child abuse; both sexual and domestic, child trafficking, autism, Down Syndrome, leukemia, heart diseases, and a host of others.

As a mother of NGOs, Audrey Allen Foundation (AAF) is saddled with the burden of sourcing for funds for our partner NGOs for the actualisation of projects as the foundation has identified paucity of funds and other resources as a limiting factor towards the effective implementation of projects.

What strategy do you make use of to have a difference?

The core mandate of the Audrey Allen Foundation is using entertainment – movies, music, comedy shows, print media publications and other special events – to raise funds and other resources for our affiliated NGOs who are gravely faced with serious scarcity of funds in the execution of their projects.

Who are the trustees of the foundation?

Our trustees include Mr. Samson Siasia (former Super Eagles coach), Adeola Agoro, Aanu Michael (presenter Good Morning Africa), Mr.Chike Okogwu (SUREP member), Bukola Ayanwuyi, Taofeek Babayeju and my humble self. We also have goodwill ambassadors in the persons of Messrs Brian Okwara (Mr.Nigeria 2007) and Femi Brainard (Actor/Writer).

What are some of the challenges you are grappling with managing the foundation?

The major challenge is funding because we realised that people have lost faith in charitable organisations due to fraudulent activities.

How do you source for funding, and how much is the biggest donation you have received on behalf of the foundation?

We haven’t yet gotten monetary donations but we are planning a fundraiser to generate funds to build a children’s hospital in Abuja soon. However, we have gotten items though that we distribute to various orphanages. The organisation has done over 16 visitations across Nigeria so far.

Apart from the foundation, do you have another regular job you are doing?

I have other things that occupy my time which include an event management company where I am the MD/CEO, called Allen Touch Events.

I’m a workaholic and I’m very passionate about anything I do. So I put in everything I have got into it and I cope very well.

I have been in paid employments in the past. I got my experiences, contacts and knowledge from them. I also learnt how to relate properly with people through those opportunities but I left when I had to. I don’t believe in building other people’s empires for forever when I can direct the energy into owning mine.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Tosin Allen is a determined woman who would strive to achieve her goals against all odds. My mum and Oprah Winfrey are my role models.

How did your mum and Oprah influence your life?

I grew up watching Oprah on the television, inspiring and helping people through her selfless contribution to the society as well as the talk show. I lost my dad when I was barely three years old, and since then my mum has been my rock; she sent me to the best schools even though it was almost beyond her means. She was determined and her desire was to ensure that I got the best of everything in life.

How old are you…you are young and beautiful, when is the wedding bell ringing?

Thanks for the compliment, but I’m not getting married anytime soon. I was 30 this August.

Where will you like to be in the next five or 10 years?

I would love to continue to touch lives to bring about the necessary changes. This would include providing for over 80 children-related Non Governmental Organisations in and outside Nigeria. I would also love to own a children’s hospital and be able to affect over 10millon lives directly or indirectly through our movies, music, social media platforms and child development programmes. In addition, I would love to achieve a number of personal goals in life which include being married with children.

  • Five die in Lagos building collapse

Five die in Lagos building collapse

Five persons, including a 13-year-old girl, died yesterday in Lagos, when a two-storey building collapsed.

House 30/32, Ishaga Road, Ikate, Surulere, was said to have collapsed around 10am, during an early morning downpour.

Emergency management officials, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Lagos Fire Service, National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and policemen were making frantic efforts to rescue people believed to be trapped in the rubble.

Eyewitnesses told The Nation that no fewer than 10 people were injured. Four were rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

It was learnt that the victims included some passersby, who had taken refuge from the rain in the uncompleted building.

Among them, The Nation learnt, was the teenager, who was said to be a bread seller. A tailor, whose machine was brought out, was trapped in the rubble.

Prince Tony Anslem, a Rotarian, said: “We were in church when we heard a sound; we rushed down and started evacuating the victims before the emergency response agencies were contacted.

“We acted swiftly because the dredging company working around here employed the youths. We were evacuating the victims when men of the NEMA and LASEMA, got here. But before they came, youths in the area had rescued five persons alive.

“As it was raining, people ran under the shed. I still believe there are people trapped under the debris. We are still expecting to recover a bread seller carrying a baby, but the one we eventually met dead, was the teenage girl with no baby.

“While we were standing here, one of the rescued victims told us that some were still trapped in there. When we moved in, we were hearing their voice: “We are still here o … we are still here o!” But we could not locate them. So far, five bodies have been removed. The state government has taken four bodies, while mallams took their own immediately.”

Confirming the incident, both NEMA’s information officer, Ibrahim Farinloye and General Manager of LASEMA Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said five bodies had been recovered.

Farinloye told The Nation that one of the injured victims was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for surgery. Two others were taken to emergency wards.

Meanwhile, the NEMA officials, while leaving the scene at about 3.30pm, alleged that they were chased out by a state official who claimed that the incident was a state government affair.

However, the official denied the allegation, saying: “I did not chase them out and I am not even aware if anyone did.

“But to put the facts straight, NEMA is a secondary responder. In any state where you have state emergency management committee, it is that committee that is primary responder. It is the state that will call NEMA if we need their assistance or if the situation is beyond our control,” he said.

The General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Dr Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo, said: “We sealed this structure about three weeks ago with three others in this environment. Whenever we seal buildings, we expect the owners to come with their various documents, but nobody showed up on this particular building.

“This construction started even before the establishment of our agency and they were not certified. We ordered them to stop work. We did monitor, but unfortunately, they decided to work on a Sunday when our offices were closed. That is why this building collapsed. For this to have happened, it means they broke our seal. The building is substandard and there was no approval.”

In a related development, a 12-storey building behind Zenith Bank Headqauaters at Ajose Adeogun, Victorias Island, Lagos, was up in flames yesterday. Three floors in the building which house many offices were completely razed.

Razak Fadipe, Director, Lagos State Fire Service, who confirmed the incident to The Nation yesterday, said he received a destress call around 8.15am .

He said when their fire truck from Onikan got to the scene, his men discovered they could not handle it alone. They therefore alerted the Ijora Service Station from where another truck moved in.

“The fire, which affected offices on the first, second and third floors, was put put out by the fire fighters,” Fadipe said.

He said investigation to unravel the cause of the fire had begun.

  • Building a sound relationship (2)

    Dear Reader,

It is a great joy for me to bring God’s Word your way today. Last week, I brought you the introductory part of this teaching. I taught on what relationship is and why we need to build a sound relationship.

Today, I will be teaching on the types of relationships we have. Basically, there are two types of relationships. The first is your relationship with God, while the second is with your fellow men. Let’s briefly examine each of them.

Relationship With God: Your relationship with God can be considered from three different levels, namely: as your Creator, Father and Lord.

God is your Creator (Genesis 1:27) and you can relate with Him as His creature. He is the Creator of every living.

God becomes your Father when you give your life to Jesus, and get born again. God’s Word says: But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name (John. 1:12). When you have a personal relationship and encounter with Him, then He becomes your Father.

However, the highest relationship with God is when He becomes your Lord. He becomes your Lord when your life is sown as a seed in dedication and absolute commitment unto Him. He is only the Lord of those who are ready to say: “Yes Lord” to His will, plan, purpose and destiny. When He becomes your Lord, you can be sure nothing can change His plan and purpose for your life. May that be your portion in Jesus’ name.

To Develop an Intimate relationship with God, however, you have to consciously, deliberately, intentionally, willingly and excitedly make yourself available. How? Through deep Word study, prayer life and constant fellowshipping with Him. There is no other relationship in life that compares in value, equal or can replace your relationship with God.

In actual fact, we can safely say that your relationship with God is the only sure foundation for success in every other kind of relationship. It is utterly important for you to straighten up your relationship with God.

Relationship With Men: The second type of relationship is your relationship with men. The word ‘men’ here is not talking about gender. This is not referring to the male gender of God’s creation. ‘Men’ in this context is referring to both male and female gender of God’s creation. Here, I am referring to your relationship with people. This is in three levels: your superiors, mates and juniors. During your life’s journey, you will definitely meet and need people in these three categories and this is the best time to develop such relationships.

Your Superiors: Your superiors are the people you draw from. They could be your boss at work, your lecturers in the school or your spiritual parents. These people have the skill you do not have, the experience you do not have and you could climb on their shoulders to see ahead. The truth is: no matter your level in life right now, there are and there will always be, people above you. These are people who can speak into your life, especially when the going seems to get tough.

My husband, my entire household and I are beneficiaries of this type of relationship. During the time I went through the valley of the shadow of death, this was one of the major areas of strength for me. Senior men in ministry were greatly used of God to stand in the gap, to ensure my total liberty and freedom from the pangs of death. Alleluia, today, I am a living testimony and can boldly say that God is too faithful to fail! He is dependable and He is more than enough!

Be humble and smart enough to identify your superiors and draw from their wealth of knowledge and experience. This will expedite your rate of accomplishment in life.

Your Mates: These are either your colleagues at work, in school or people at the level that you are in. These are the people you share with. They could be your friends. The need for you to identify your own company (Acts 4:23) so as to derive maximum benefits from it, cannot be over-emphasized. Remember, if you stand alone, you fall alone. One tree never makes a forest!

Then, Your Juniors: These are the people that you flow out to, the ones that look up to you as their superior. Wisdom demands that you identify people that you can reach out to. The need to build sound relationship with people at these levels cannot be over-emphasized. No matter who you are or the category to which you belong, you should get involved in these three levels of relationships. You will always have superiors, mates and juniors. Receive the wisdom to build these strongly, today.

The question then is: Is Jesus Lord over your life? Or are you lord over yourself? God becomes your Father only when you give your life to Him and be born again. To get born again, you have to confess your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour.

If you are ready to be born again, say this simple prayer with me, in faith: Dear Lord Jesus, I come to You today. I believe You died and rose again for my sake. Forgive me of my sins, take over my life, make me Your child and let Your peace reign over my life. Thank you for saving me. Now I know I am born again.

Congratulations, you are now born again! I believe that you will begin to experience the reality of the price that Jesus paid for your sins at Calvary. All-round rest and peace are guaranteed you, in Jesus’ Name!

  • Two dead, six trapped in Lagos building collapse

Two dead, six trapped in Lagos building collapse

Tragedy struck in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos yesterday. A two-storey building under construction caved in, killing two builders. The second victim was brought out at 9.30 pm, while the fate of six others, including a pastor said to be living on the ground floor, is yet to be ascertained as they remain trapped in the rubble.

As at press time, frantic efforts were still in progress to excavate the trapped victims of the ill-fated structure located at19, Bashiru Street.

It was gathered that the building collapsed around 4:45pm while the construction workers were still on duty. Some of them were also trapped. The Nation also gathered that four of the workers were rescued alive.

The General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr.Femi Oke-Osanyintolu told reporters that the agency’s quick response and efforts of other security agencies facilitated the rescue operation.

The official said it was too early to conclude on what must have caused the collapse of the building, which approval was allegedly granted by the Federal Ministry of Housing.

An eye witness said he was in an adjourning building when the building collapsed, saying: “I heard a large bang and the next thing we saw was that the building undergoing construction just collapsed.

“Immediately after, we saw a little boy crying, saying that the construction workers, numbering about seven, had sent him to buy water for them, only for him to return to discover that the building which they were working on, had collapsed.”

NEMA’s South West Information Officer, Ibrahim Farinloye, who also confirmed the story, said efforts were being made to save one of the victims crying for help, adding that the agency would work overnight.

“The trapped victims are construction workers and their apprentice, who was the only survivor, was sent on an errand. We just got a voice under the rubble and rescue work to get the victim out is ongoing. The person was speaking Hausa language and he said five of them are trapped,” he added.

As at the time of filing in this report, rescue operations by security operatives and emergency agencies, including Civil Defence Corps, LASEMA, and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officials, were still ongoing, in effort to rescue the trapped persons from the rubble.

Meanwhile, the state government has given the owner and occupants of a three-storey building beside the collapse building 24-hour ultimatum to vacate it because it had failed construction “integrity test.” This, it explained, was aimed at forestalling another tragedy.

  • Building a sound relationship

    Dear Reader,

You are welcome to another new month in our year of Next Levels. I want you to be rest assured that God is going to visit you this month. All through this month via the Word of God, I will be sharing with you, Building A Sound Relationship.

Today, I want to start by looking at what relationship is and why we need to build a sound relationship. Relationships are vital to destiny. Your association defines your destination. The relationships you are into never leave you the same; they either add to you or take away from you. They either increase you or decrease you.

The Word of God says: He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed (Proverbs 13:20). The scriptural understanding of how to build and keep sound, healthy and Godly relationships is very vital in the fulfillment of destiny.

To relate means to connect. It means to contact and interact. To relate means to be involved in or with; to connect, to interact, to link up and to be involved in. Therefore, relationships can be defined as the way in which two or more people connect. A sound relationship is one that is free from defect, decay, damage. It is a relationship in good condition. It is unshakable, healthy and valid. These are the kind of relationships God expects you to get involved in.

    Why Relationships?

In order for you to build relationships that will positively influence your life, you must have a full knowledge of the reasons why God wants us to be involved in relationships. There are two basic things that you must understand here: First, God by nature is involved in relationships. The Bible says: For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one (1 John 5:7). There is a powerful relationship between the Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Bible says that these three are one. That is, they agree in one. This is a vivid picture of God’s relational nature.

In the Garden of Eden, God related well with Adam, before the fall of man. Out of His relationship with him, God knew that Adam would need a helpmeet for the work in the garden and for companionship. Also, on the day they ate the forbidden fruit, He came in the cool of the day to see to their welfare. God believes in relationships and He Himself is into strong relationships. If He is involved in relationships, then, it is necessary for us to also get involved.

Second, Man is created to relate. Genesis 1:27 says: So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. Man is created in the image of God; therefore, he is expected to relate and connect. Nobody can ever live successfully in isolation. We all need one another. You need people to help you get to where you are going in life, no matter what level you find yourself. You cannot live in an Island of your own, no matter who you are.

Every part of the body works and relates together (Ephesians 4:16), so also you are created to relate. In actual fact, man is created to be inter-dependent and that includes you. God made man to …dwell together… (Psalm 133:1).

To effectively build a sound relationship, being born again is the only sure foundation. To be born again, you have to confess your sins and accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour.
