‘US endorsement of terrorism strategy will boost Nigeria’s image’

A group, the Concerned Professionals’ Congress (CPC), has lauded an endorsement recently by the United States of America of Nigeria-terrorism strategy, describing the move as capable of enhancing and consolidating the nation’s image as a leading figure in the global coalition against terrorism and violent extremism.

It also said that it will ultimately boost the morale of troops currently engaged in the final operations to rid the North East of the scourge of Boko Haram.

The group said this in a joint statement issued on Monday in Abuja by its National Coordinator, Musa Tukur Tilde and the Chief Media Strategist, Emeka Nwapa while reacting to remarks in Washington D.C by the U.S Secretary of State, Mr Rex Tillerson who spoke at a World Conference on Global Coalition Against Terrorism.

Tillerson, in his opening remarks, while emphasising the need for intelligence and information-sharing in combating terror averred that Nigeria and West Africa have done very well using synergy, intelligence and information sharing to halt terrorists’ attacks thereby defeating Boko Haram.boko haram victim

He urged countries with challenges of domestic terrorist groups to build and adopt the excellent examples of synergy, intelligence and information sharing system which Nigeria employed to win the war against Boko Haram.

The CPC, an advocacy group that is in the vanguard of mobilising public support for the military’s counter-terrorism war as well as promoting democracy, good governance and citizen engagement in the country maintained that the United States’ public praise of President Muhammadu Buhari’s strategy to defeat Boko Haram is highly commendable.

“To President Muhammadu Buhari whose uncommon zeal, sincerity, commitment and clear-headedness about how to defeat Boko Haram within 18 months in office, we say a big thank you.

“To the Nigerian delegation to the Washington counter-terrorism summit led the CDS, General Abayomi Gabriel Olonishakin whose purpose-driven leadership of the Armed Forces anchored on synergy and doggedness in actualizing Mr President’s objectives, we say big kudos.

“To our courageous and gallant troops and the commanders of Operation Lafiya Dole, either fallen or standing, may God bless you all for doing us very proud,’’ the group said, pointing out however that it was the entire Nigerian people that the United States singled out at the World Conference for recognition and commendation.

Recalling that not too long ago, President Buhari had received a phone call in London from the new U.S President Donald Trump who commended Nigeria for her giant counter-terrorism strides, the group noted that at the last 71st United Nations General Assembly in New York late last year came an unprecedented endorsement from former U.S President Barack Obama who openly praised President Muhammadu Buhari and the gallant Nigerian military for defeating Boko Haram.

“It is worth noting that these endorsements of President Muhammadu Buhari’s successful counter-terrorism strategy by two successive bi-partisan political dispensations in the U.S in a space of three months is perhaps Nigeria’s greatest achievement now. It is our greatest feat as a nation of hope and promise against threats to our national unity, security, stability and prosperity‘’, the group said.

The group observed that such endorsement by the United States is not cheap, pointing out that the U.S has the strongest fighting force in the world apart from being the champion and leader of this free world where violent extremism and terrorism pose great dangers.

“With all the intelligence and information at his disposal, any President of the United States says what he means and means what he says. Therefore, when he says Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy is good enough for adoption by other countries, it is the best endorsement by the world’s acclaimed counter-terrorism leader. As an affiliate to ISIS, Boko Haram is the world’s most deadly terrorist group after ISIS and al-Queda. The U.S is, therefore, convinced about our military’s gallantry over Boko Haram,’’ it said.

“The United States is at the forefront of the global coalition against terrorism. Al Qaeda attacked the twin towers in New York 16 years ago. September 2017 is the 16th anniversary of 9/11 so the memory is still fresh in the average American. When they cite their experience with terrorists, the world should listen. For President Obama and President Donald Trump to single out our military for special commendation is a headliner. It is a vote of international confidence on our Armed Forces under the Chief of Defence Staff,” the group said.

  • Governor urges FG to use NYSC to promote ethics

Governor urges FG to use NYSC to promote ethics

The Cross River State Governor, Professor Ben Ayade, has advocated the use of the National Youth Service Corps as a platform for the promotion of good ethics and sound moral values.

He was while receiving the Director-General of the NYSC, Brigadier General Sulaiman Kazaure, at the Government House, Calabar.

A statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by the NYSC Headquarters quoted Professor Ayade Ayade as condemning the attitude and behaviours of people in contemporary Nigeria, especially the shift towards materialism, noting that such represented complete deviation from AfrIcan culture and traditions.

He called for efforts towards restoring the cherished values of the society.

The Governor was emphatic about the role the NYSC could play towards re-orientating the populace, noting that the Scheme had the responsibility to mould youths in preparation for leadership.

“Therefore, the cardinal theme that you must impart at the level of NYSC is the doctrine of discipline, ethics, morality, good conduct and good conscience,” he added.

He advocated the incorporation of the teaching of morals in the content of the Orientation course while also suggesting that participation in the Scheme should be mandatory for all Nigerian graduates irrespective of their age.

Ayade used the occasion to call on the NYSC to help current corps members to fulfil their dreams by posting them to serve in their areas of specialty.

The Governor said with delight that as a Corps member deployed to Imo State in 1988/89, he was posted to a brewery based on his discipline.

Reminiscing on his experience, he added that his desire to contribute towards finding solution to an environmental problem arising from the company’s operations spurred him to go for higher degrees and later establishing a laboratory that served as environmental consultant to oil companies among feats he has so far achieved.

“Without the NYSC in the right place, I would not have found direction and focus; NYSC made me,” he said.

He responding to the Director-General’s request to help address some challenges faced by the Scheme in the state, Governor Ayade said he takes those problems “very personal” and assured that they would be looked into.

Earlier, the Director-General had sought the state government’s intervention in areas of needs such as provision of utility vehicle for the NYSC State Secretariat, renovation of Orientation camp, payment of state subvention and outstanding allowances of Corps members.

Kazaure, who told the Governor that he was in the state for the 2016 Batch ‘B’ Pre-Orientation Workshop, thanked the state government for its support towards successful hosting of the programme.

  • Crude Price: Group Tasks NEPC on economic recovery

The New Initiative for Credible Leadership (NIPL) has tasked the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) to increase its activities toward ensuring increase in non-oil export as a solution to the economic hardship caused by fallen crude oil price.

It said the NEPC has a crucial role to play in Nigeria’s economic recovery since there was a consensus that the era of depending on crude oil as the country’s major revenue source was over.

A statement issued by the group in Abuja on Thursday noted that the current economic challenge offered a unique chance for the NEPC to fulfill its mandate of developing and diversifying the nation’s export trade since it could easily get the buy-in of Nigerians at this point.

The Executive Director (NICL), Rev Samson Onwu, noted that the NEPC must also live up to its responsibility of assisting the development and promotion of export-oriented industries since the country must first have products to sell to the world before increasing its export.

He said:  “Now is a good time as any for the Executive Director of NEPC, Mr Olusegun Awolowo to implement all the impressive concepts and ideas he had articulated in the past. His public pronouncements have been source of hope in the past and we believe implementation of his ideas will bring the much needed succor to Nigerians.

“Our observation is that Nigerians have been looking inwards since the pressure on the naira first manifested and our belief is that it is a matter of time before the small and medium scale industries that were recently re-activated will begin to produce surplus to local consumption.

“NEPC must prepare for this eventuality to ensure that there will be no glut and that industries are able to export such surpluses without breaking sweat.

“We equally expect that Mr. Awolowo can now activate the various foreign contacts and relationships that the Council has built in the past years for the benefit of Nigerian companies that are ready to export their goods and services.”

He advised Awolowo not to shy away from exploiting the cooperation that is possible with government agencies with complementary functions to ensure that the economy is out of the woods.

Ocholi’s car crash: FRSC Begins investigation

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi on Monday said the commission has began full investigation into the causes of the crash of the car of the late Minister of Labour and productivity, James Ochli to determine what led to the ghastly crash in order to prevent future occurrence,

The FRSC also  commiserates with President Muhammadu Buhari, members of the Federal Executive Council and the immediate family of Barrister James Eneojo Ocholi on the death of the Minister on the Kaduna- Abuja road.

According to Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy of the corps in a statement issued yesterday in Abuja said  Oyeyemi noted that the death of the Minister in the crash was a tragic incident that has challenged FRSC to step up its campaigns against carnage, saying he was personally touched and would work with relevant stakeholders to develop appropriate strategies that could address future occurrences.

“The crash occurred at about 1500hrs and involved two vehicles: one Toyota Lexus LX570 car and a backup car,” he stated.

“3 lives were lost in the incident. While the Minister and his son died instantly, the wife later died at the Doka Hospital near Kaduna.

The Corps Marshal further disclosed that as soon as the crash occurred, FRSC rescue teams were mobilised from the Ambulance Point and Unit Command at Doka and Kateri respectively to the scene where they carried out the rescue activities. He pointed out that the corpses were conveyed to the National Hospital Abuja by personnel of the FRSC where they were deposited.

On the cause of the crash, Oyeyemi disclosed that preliminary investigation into the cause indicated that the crash was due to tyre burst, which led to loss of control and somersaulting of the vehicle. He added however that he has ordered full investigation into the crash to be carried out by FRSC Accident Investigation Team.

“I have already ordered full investigation into the causes of the crash to determine what led to the ghastly crash in order to prevent future occurrence,” he stated.

Meanwhile the Corps Marshal has disclosed that with the unfortunate incident, FRSC is more determined to work with the Executive and members of the National Assembly as well as other relevant stakeholders to workout appropriate modalities for ensuring crash-free roads, saying training and retraining of government drivers is part of the immediate measures being taken by the FRSC to avert convoy crashes in the country.

He noted that when FRSC trained the drivers of the Governors’ convoy, the benefits in terms of improved driving culture became immediately noticeable, saying the Corps would be working with members of the Federal Executive Council to put some measures in place, including re-training of their drivers to avoid convoy crashes.

“We are working with the Minister of Works, Power and Housing to install traffic signs at some strategic points along the highways. We are equally committed to working with the National Assembly to step up advocacy and enforcement strategies to curtail issues of speed violation and promotion of use of seatbelt,” Oyeyemi stated.
