  • Court remands man for killing Ekiti Monarch

    …TWO REMANDED FOR EX-COMMISSIONER’S MURDER

     

    An Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded in prison a 42-year-old man, Omoniyi Ademola, over alleged murder.

    Ademola killed a traditional ruler in Ekiti State, the Onise of Odo Oro Ekiti, Oba Gbadebo Ogunsakin, on August 20 by stabbing him with a
    knife.

    Also, two persons, Tajudeen Bello and Lucky Solomon, also appeared before the same court for alleged involvement in the murder of a Commissioner in the Federal Character Commission, Mr. Bunmi Ojo.

    Ojo was shot dead at a viewing centre in Adebayo Area of Ado-Ekiti on August 10 where he was watching a live football match.

    Police prosecutor, Johnson Okunade, alleged that Ademola, a member of one of the royal families in the community committed the alleged
    offence of on August 20.

    According to him, the offence contravened Section 319 of Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor urged the Court to remand the accused in prison pending legal advice from office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The plea was not taken as his counsel, Mr Adefolaju Ayobioloja, applied for his bail but was refused by the Magistrate.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Adesoji Adegboye, consequently remanded the accused in prison and adjourned the case until September 21 for
    mention.

    Bello, 22, and Solomon, 32, are facing two-count charge of murder and membership of a cult.

    Prosecutor Okunade told the court that the duo conspired and murdered Ojo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) member and former Personal Assistant to former Ekiti State Governor Segun Oni.

    Okunade alleged that the accused were members of a secret society, Black Axe Confraternity.

    The offences, according to him, contravened Section 319 of Criminal Code and Section 4 (1) of the Secret Cults Abolition and Prohibition Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    Okunade asked the court to remand the accused in prison pending advice from DPP.

    Counsel to the accused, Mr. Chris Omokhafe, applied for the bail of his clients but the request was turned down by the court.

    Magistrate Adegboye in his ruling remanded the duo in prison and adjourned the case till September 19 for DPP advice.

  • Murder of commissioner in Ekiti : Two remanded in prison

    Two men, Tajudeen Bello and Luck Solomon who allegedly murdered Mr Bunmi Ojo, Commissioner in the Federal Character Commission, were on Monday in Ado Ekiti remanded in prison on the orders of an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused — Bello, 22, and Solomon, 32 — are facing a two-count charge of murder and membership of a cult.

    While arraigning the accused, Police Prosecutor Johnson Okunade told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 14 in the state capital.

    According to him, the duo conspired and murdered the politician, a personal assistant to a former governor of Ekiti, Mr Segun Oni.

    The prosecutor alleged that the accused were members of a secret society — Black Axe confraternity.

  • Police vow to arrest killers of ex-Gov. Oni’s aide

    The police in  Ekiti said on Monday that  they  would leave no stone unturned in their  efforts at tracking the killers  of Mr  Bunmi Ojo, a former Personal Assistant to former  Gov.  Segun Oni.

    The Police Public Relations Officer in the state,  DSP  Caleb Ikechukwu,  told journalists in Ado Ekiti that those responsible for the killing  would not escape justice.

    He said though no suspect had been arrested in connection with the murder of the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain,  investigation had begun into the incident.

    The spokesman said  a team of detectives and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were now on the trail  of  the unidentified gunmen.

    He said the police would address a news conference as soon as ongoing investigation had been concluded.

    “We are determined to ensure that the killers are brought to justice. We are gathering tips and working on all possibilities to ensure that these evil doers are made to face the wrath of the law

    “We have sent our men to comb everywhere possible.

    “ Our men in plain clothes  are out to unravel the killers, they are combing every corner and those areas seen to be criminal hideouts are under the watchful eyes of our men.

    “  So, we are confident that the killers will be arrested soon,’’  Ikechukwu said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the deceased was the  commissioner  representing Ekiti at the Federal Character Commission before he was  killed  at a popular viewing centre located in Adebayo area of Ado Ekiti on  Friday night.

    His remains  would be buried on Friday  after a funeral service.

    Oni had already  paid a condolence visit to  Ojo’s private residence located at Federal Housing Area of Ado Ekiti.

    Meanwhile, a family member  has told newsmen that the assassins seized his three mobile phones before killing him.

    The family member, who pleaded anonymity, stated that the killers also collected his car key   which he said was later  returned after  the murder.

    “When they stormed the viewing centre, they shot into the air to disperse the viewers and they immediately seized Ojo’s mobile phones  and car key before shooting him.

    “But they later returned the car key after carrying out the act. What they wanted to do was  to cause distraction and make the murder look  like a robbery

    “We are appealing to the police to bring the perpetrators to justice. Mr  Bunmi Ojo’s death shouldn’t be swept under the carpet,”  he said.

  • Ojo’s killing a ‘brutish end’ to blossoming career – APC

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State on Saturday lamented the gruesome killing of Comrade Bunmi Ojo, describing it as brutish end to a blossoming life and career.

    Ojo, former Personal Assistant to Engr. Segun Oni and a Commissioner in the Federal Character Commission (FCC), was shot dead by unknown gunmen around Ajitadidun area in Ado Ekiti, where he went to watch a football on Friday evening.

    In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party rued the untimely death of its chieftain and urged security operatives to fish out the perpetrators without delay.

    Olatunbosun described the deceased as a personal friend and amiable personality who would not hurt anyone.

    He said Ojo’s death was a grave personal loss to him and everyone associated with the deceased.

    “Those who knew Bunmi (Ojo) cannot but liked him. He was an easy-going and upright politician who cultivated friendship in both high and low places, which endeared him to many people,” Olatunbosun stated.
