  • 28-yr-old suspected notorious burglar nabbed in Lagos

    The police have arrested a suspected notorious burglar in Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

    The 28-year- old suspect, Rilwan Olanrewaju, was said to have forcibly entered the apartment of one Olasunkanmi Igboye, on November 20, 2018.

    It was said that he entered through the roof of the building, when the owner of the property caught him.

    The suspect, who hails from Igbaja, Kwara State, was said to have committed numerous thefts and burglaries in recent times.

    He was subsequently arraigned before an Ebute Metta Chief Magistrate’s Court.

    He pleaded guilty to a two- count charge of felony and falsely entry.

    It was learnt that the suspect has a case bordering on stealing of electrical meter, pending at the aforementioned court,

    Police prosecutor, Inspector, Kehinde Olatunji, told the court that the offender broke into the apartment of one Olasunkanmi Igboye on November 20, around 1:30pm at 3, Sharkliford Street, Apapa Road, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

    “He was found right inside one of the rooms ransacking valuables .When he was approached, he couldn’t explain himself. They searched the building and discovered he had entered the apartment through the roof.’’

    Olatunji added that the offence was punishable under Section 307(a) and 406(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The presiding magistrate, Mrs O. Kushanu adjourned the case to November 26, for fact and sentencing.

  • Alleged serial burglar remanded

    A 22-year-old man, Sodiq Lawal, who allegedly broke into shops and stole a plasma TV and other items, has been remanded in prison on the order of an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court in Osun State.

    He is facing an eight-count charge on conspiracy, intent to commit felony, shop-breaking and stealing.

    Lawal pleaded not guilty.

    The Magistrate, Dorcas Ajiboye, refused to grant the accused bail and asked his lawyer, Mr. Michael Okoh, to make a written application for the bail.

    She remanded him in Ile-Ife Prison pending the consideration of bail, saying this will act as a deterrent to others.

    The prosecutor, Sunday Osanyintuyi, had told the court that the accused, whose address was unknown, committed the offence on November 2 at Ajamopo Street, Ile-Ife.

    Police arrest burglar of senator’s home

    The police in Delta State have arrested Mr. Emeka Ezeonyi, who allegedly broke into the home of Senator Peter Nwaoboshi in Asaba and stole money and valuables, spokesman Andrew Aniamaka said yesterday in Asaba.

    He alleged that the suspect stole phones, laptops and cash.

    Aniamaka said the suspect, who hailed from Umuchu village in Aguata Local Government of Anambra State, confessed to have burgled the lawmaker’s residence.

    He added that the suspect also confessed to partaking in other robberies and burglaries in Asaba, Owerri, Makurdi and Enugu.

    “The Delta Police Command, with effective collaboration of the IGP’s Intelligence Response Team, on October 24, arrested Emeka Ezeonyi for his involvement in burglaries and stealing.

    “Upon his arrest, the suspect confessed to have burgled the homes of personalities in Asaba, Owerri, Makurdi and Enugu,” the spokesman said.

    He said Police Commissioner Mr. Zanna Ibrahim hailed the officers who arrested the suspect.

  • Police arraign 20-yr-old burglar in Ekiti

    A 20-year-old man, Akomolafe Tobi, has appeared before an Ado-Ekiti

    Magistrates’ Court for alleged burglary and stealing.

    The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a two -count charge of burglary and stealing.

    Police prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence on August 25 at about 11:30pm at Igbehin Odotu area in Ado-Ekiti.

    The defendant and others at large allegedly broke into the shop of the complainant, Mrs Balogun Modupe. It was also alleged that the accused and others at large stole one Techno phone valued at N15,000, Itel phone valued at N9,000, one pack of Bournvita refill pack valued at N10,500, one pack of Bournvita beverage valued at N13,200, among others.

    Okunade said the offences contravened section 413 (1) (2) and section 390 (9) of the Criminal code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012. He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him study the file and assemble his witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. His lawyer, Simeon Ojo, urged the court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. Modupe Afeniforo, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    She ruled that one of the sureties must have a landed property within the jurisdiction and adjourned the case until Sept 15 for hearing.

  • Suspected burglar of The Nation’s reporter house arrested in Ekiti

    The Police in Ekiti State have arrested a suspected burglar, Idowu Kolawole, who broke into the home of The Nation correspondent in Ekiti State, Odunayo Ogunmola, last Thursday.

    The house, located near Deeper Life Campground in Ajebamidele area of Ado Ekiti, was burgled and valuables including a 32-inch Samsung plasma television set, an HP laptop, a C1 Nokia mobile phone, phone chargers and cans of malt drink were stolen by the suspect.

    The suspect, who capitalised on the fact that many residents of the area had left for their various places of work and summer lessons, scaled the fence and cut the burglary-proof of the kitchen window to gain entry into the house and made away with the valuables.

    Members of the household on arrival home at about 4:30 pm discovered that the building had been burgled. The burglary was immediately reported at the Ologede Police Station, along Ikere Road in Ado Ekiti by the reporter.

    Acting on a tip-off, policemen from Ologede Police Station Saturday morning arrested Kolawole at his hideout in Kajola area of Ikere Ekiti at about 11.20 am. The laptop and the phone where recovered immediately at the point of arrest.

    Some residents of Ikere described the suspect as the mastermind of many incidents of robbery, burglary and other criminal activities in the town and nearby Ado, the state capital.

    After his arrest, the suspect admitted breaking into Ogunmola’s house at about 10.00am and stealing the items.

    He claimed that he carried out the burglary alone and never brought any accomplice along.

    When quizzed further by the policemen, the suspect revealed that he hid the plasma TV inside the bush behind an uncompleted building at Road 4 in Ajebamidele. He later led the policemen to the scene where the plasma TV was recovered.

    The suspect was brought to the scene of the crime where he explained how he used a big saw to cut the burglary-proof of the kitchen window to gain access into the house.

    Kolawole later led the policemen to is rented one-room apartment in Moferere area of Ado, where Ogunmola’s laptop bag, the saw used by the suspect to carry out the burglary and other suspected stolen items were recovered.

    RRS claims suspected burglar spends N240,000 monthly on hotels

    A suspected burglar has reportedly told Rapid Response Squad (RRS) operatives that arrested him that he pays N240,000.00 monthly as hotel bills.

    Joseph David, 20, from Ekpoma in Edo State, was arrested in Ikeja around 4:40am.  after he allegedly burgled two flats on Gbajobi Close, Balogun, Ikeja, and stole three laptops and five mobile phones.

    David was on his way to his hotel located in Dopemu, where he has been lodging for over one month when he was intercepted by the RRS.

    RRS investigations showed that there have been cases of breaking in around Gbajobi Close. The residents have reportedly lost valuables and cash to burglars.

    In a statement, RRS claimed that David confessed that he has been lodging in hotels because he couldn’t live in his parents’ house because of the poverty stricken condition of the environment.

    He was quoted as saying that he spent N8,000,  per night on hotel, noting that he has spent over a month in the hotel.

    He said: “I was returning to the hotel when I was accosted on Awolowo Way by RRS operatives and they stopped to check my bag. They found: 1 Mac laptop; two HP laptops, two iPhone 5; one blackberry classic and two Nokia Touch phones.

    “The house I broke into is a two storey building behind Jabita Hotel in Balogun, Ikeja. I scaled its fence around 3a.m and I finished the operation around 4am. I have broken into some other houses in that area before, where I stole handsets and laptops. I am into ‘yahoo yahoo’ but money has not been forthcoming like before. I could barely make N100, 000 and N50, 000 like before. That is why I used to break in and steal to augment my earning.

    “I stay in the hotel with my girlfriend and a couple of friends come around. Benjamin is the only buyer that I have. I have been an embarrassment to my parents”.

    Benjamin Odinaka, 18, a phone repairer in Computer village, Ikeja, said: “I buy phones and laptops from him. I used to visit him in whatever hotel he lodges in to buy the stolen items.

    “This is the third time that I would be buying laptops and phones from him. I have bought more than seven laptops and several phones. The last time I bought a Mac laptop, an HP laptop, an iphone 5 and a Blackberry phone from him.”

    A man whose belongings were stolen, who simply identified himself as Daniel said: “Break in has been going on in the close for quite some time now. Daily, we hear report of burglars in houses around us. We don’t know this guy and we have not met him before”.

    Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos said the suspects have been transferred to Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SAS) for more investigation.
