EPL: Romero’s late goal rescues Spurs at Burnley

Cristian Romero rescued a point for Tottenham Hotspur late on just as under-pressure head coach Thomas Frank faced further embarrassment against struggling Burnley at Turf Moor.

Burnley were on the brink of recording their first Premier League win in 14 games at Turf Moor until captain Romero powered home an 89th-minute header.

Frank, whose position has been under internal scrutiny at Spurs, bought time with a midweek Champions League win against Borussia Dortmund, but it remains to be seen if this draw makes his position any more secure.

Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka was outstanding with a string of fine saves, but the manner in which Spurs threatened to subside against Scott Parker’s struggling side left Frank facing the fury of his own fans once more.

Spurs were on top in a scrappy first half, finally taking the lead after 38 minutes following a spell of pressure that pushed a passive, tentative Burnley back.

Dubravka punched the air in defiant celebration after a superb double save from Wilson Odobert and Conor Gallagher, but was powerless when Van de Ven pounced to flash home a powerful finish.

It was no more than Frank’s side deserved, but Spurs then switched off at the back in first-half stoppage time, allowing Axel Tuanzebe to sweep home Kyle Walker’s cross.

Dubravka kept Spurs at bay, blocking Dominic Solanke’s header from Xavi Simons’ cross before diving to turn away Djed Spence’s long-range effort.

Burnley then stunned Spurs by taking the lead 14 minutes from time, subsitute Lyle Foster scrambling home after his first effort had been saved by Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Spurs poured forward, the heroic Dubravka saving from Mathys Tel and Simons hitting the bar before Romero struck.

EPL: Liverpool held to 1-1 draw by relegation-bound Burnley

Marcus Edwards scored a second-half equaliser as Liverpool were held to a frustrating Premier League draw by struggling Burnley at Anfield.

Florian Wirtz gave Arne Slot’s side the lead in the first half with an emphatic strike, 10 minutes after Dominik Szoboszlai had hit the bar from the penalty spot.

Liverpool dominated possession throughout but failed to take their chances, with the hosts having 32 shots and Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka making eight saves.

And Edwards punished the home side with a superb finish past Alisson in the 65th minute after he was played through by Florentino Luis.

Liverpool pushed hard for a late winner but could not find a second goal and this will go down as two points dropped against a side who are 19th in the table.

A draw extended the Reds’ unbeaten run to 12 games in all competitions, although this was a fourth successive league draw.

A point takes Liverpool one clear of Manchester United in fourth but Slot’s side missed the chance to cut the gap to Manchester City and Aston Villa to five points.

Burnley remain winless in their past 13 league games but this draw would have felt like a win. The Clarets are still deep in the relegation zone but a point at Anfield could do wonders for their confidence.

EPL: Man Utd draw 2-2 with Burnley as Sesko shines with double

Manchester United were denied victory in their first game since the sacking of head coach Ruben Amorim as relegation-threatened Burnley fought back to claim only their third point in 12 games.

The visitors were on track to claim a comeback victory when striker Benjamin Sesko doubled his tally for the season with two goals in a 10-minute spell at the start of the second half – both thanks to precise first-time finishes.

Ayden Heaven’s own goal had put Burnley in front at the break, and just as it looked as though they were heading for yet another defeat after Sesko’s goals, Jaidon Anthony equalised.

That made it a frustrating night for interim United boss Darren Fletcher, who ditched Amorim’s formation – including three central defenders and wing-backs – and saw his side carve out numerous chances.

Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu both had goalbound efforts cleared off the line, Lisandro Martinez had a goal disallowed for a debatable push on ex-Manchester City defender Kyle Walker, Sesko wasted a couple of chances to complete his hat-trick, and teenage substitute Shea Lacey curled a superb effort against the bar.

The visiting fans had made their feelings known about the club’s hierarchy before the game when they raised a banner bearing a message condemning minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. They also sang a vicious song about co-chairman Joel Glazer.

However, they also sang loudly in support of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick – the two frontrunners to take over as caretaker boss until the end of the season.

EPL: Arsenal extend lead at top after win against Burnley

Premier League leaders Arsenal continued their impressive start to the season with a comfortable win at Burnley to make it nine consecutive victories in all competitions.

Goals from Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice sealed the win – their fifth in a row in the league – as Mikel Arteta’s side moved seven points clear at the top, albeit having played a game more than some of their rivals.

It was an impressive victory against a Burnley side that can often prove difficult to break down and had recorded back-to-back victories before facing the Gunners.

But no side has scored more goals from set-pieces than Arsenal this season and it was from one that they took the lead, Gyokeres firing in from close range from Rice’s corner.

Burnley goalkeeper Martin Dubravka produced a one-handed save to deny Bukayo Saka, before Leandro Trossard had an effort cleared off the line.

But Arsenal got their second before the break when Rice powerfully headed in Trossard’s chipped ball.

Burnley saw more of the ball after the break and went close to getting a goal back when Florentino Luis headed over from close range, before Marcus Edwards struck the post from a free-kick with the last action of the match.

That late chance aside it was largely a trouble-free afternoon for Arsenal as they recorded an eighth win in 10 Premier League games this season.

Defeat for Burnley means they are 17th, four points clear of the bottom three.

EPL: Richarlison brace leads Spurs to victory against Burnley

Two goals from Richarlison, including a stunning scissor kick, helped Thomas Frank win his first Premier League match in charge of Tottenham as his Spurs side proved too good for newly promoted Burnley.

Brazil forward Richarlison only scored four Premier League goals in 2024-25 but was superb as he showed the form that convinced Spurs to pay £60m to sign him from Everton three years ago.

He scored the first league goal in the Frank era when he did superbly to spin and control a shot on the turn after only 10 minutes, following excellent work on the right from Mohammed Kudus on his Spurs league debut following his £55m summer move from West Ham.

The two linked up again for Spurs’ second, Kudus hanging up a cross from the byeline and Richarlison acrobatically volleying in, with the goal repeatedly shown and enjoyed by the home fans on the stadium’s four big screens.

It got even better for Tottenham in the 66th minute as Richarlison started the move – the ball fell for Pape Matar Sarr and he played it through for Brennan Johnson to race clear and provide a clinical finish.

Richarlison was given a standing ovation by the home crowd when he was replaced in the 71st minute by Dominic Solanke, who almost grabbed a fourth but shot narrowly wide.

Former Brentford boss Frank only became Spurs manager in June, replacing the sacked Ange Postecoglou – who was dismissed 16 days after guiding the club to their first trophy in 17 years when they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final.

Burnley sign Walker from Man City in £5m deal

Burnley have signed England defender Kyle Walker from Manchester City for a fee of up to £5m.

The right-back completed his medical on Friday and has signed a two-year contract with the Clarets.

The 35-year-old will work again with head coach Scott Parker, with whom he played at Tottenham Hotspur for two seasons.

“I’m delighted to be here,” Walker told Burnley’s website. “I can’t wait to come in and add my experience and quality to what looks an exciting squad.

“When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at. He’s done an amazing job here, guiding the club back to the Premier League.”

Walker made 15 appearances in the first half of last season for City before joining AC Milan on loan in January, but the Italian club decided not to make his move permanent.

He won 17 trophies during his time at Etihad Stadium and was part of the squad that won the Treble in 2023.

Walker, who started his career at Sheffield United, signed for City in the summer of 2017 for an initial £45m and made 319 appearances for the club.

Burnley were promoted back to the Premier League last season following their relegation in 2024.

The Clarets creatively announced Walker’s arrival on X, , externalusing Popstar Lionel Richie’s music video for his song ‘Hello’.

Walker is their fifth signing of the summer, following the arrival of defender Axel Tuanzebe, left-back Quilindschy Hartman, goalkeeper Max Weiss and French winger Loum Tchaouna.

  • Leeds, Burnley  gain promotion  to Premier League

Leeds, Burnley  gain promotion  to Premier League

Leeds United and Burnley  have won promotion to the Premier League as faltering Sheffield United were forced to settle for a place in the Championship play-offs.

Leeds, who last played in the top division in the 2022⁄23 season, humbled Stoke 6-0 at Elland Road, with Joel Piroe scoring four goals.

Daniel Farke’s men knew that if Sheffield United failed to beat Burnley in the later kick-off, they would be back in the Premier League.

Captain Josh Brownhill scored twice for Scott Parker’s Burnley, who have made an immediate return to the top flight.

Leeds and Burnley both have 94 points and neither can now be caught by Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United (86), who have won just one of their past five games.

Leeds, who suffered the agony of defeat to Southampton in last season’s Championship play-off final at Wembley, made short work of Stoke.

Dutch forward Piroe, who had not scored since late February, returned to form with a vengeance, celebrating a hat-trick in the 20th  minute.

Junior Firpo made it four and Piroe, the club’s leading scorer this season, netted his fourth goal shortly before half-time.

The game was already long over as a contest but Wilfried Gnonto nodded a sixth goal in the 59th  minute.

Farke and his players celebrated in front of their passionate fans at the final whistle but the champagne is still on ice.

The German, who has previously managed in the Premier League with Norwich, praised the way his team had coped with the pressure.

“To deliver such an emphatic performance is really amazing and all the credit goes to the boys for the way they have handled the situation and the spirit they have shown in recent weeks,” he told the BBC.

“It’s the fate of a striker that sometimes you have a dry period or a dip in form. Joel had this but he has worked so hard and got himself out of it.

“In the last few weeks his performances were better but the ball didn’t want to go in the net. It’s a bit like shaking a bottle of ketchup – all of a sudden everything comes out and that was a bit the case today.”

Leeds wobbled from the start of March, winning just one in six games, raising fears that they would again have to settle for a place in the play-offs.

But the league’s top-scorers, with 89 goals, have now won their past four league games.

Burnley are nowhere near as prolific as their closest rivals, whom they will battle for the Championship title, but their superpower is their defence – they have conceded just 15 goals all season.

Brownhill broke the deadlock at Turf Moor in the 28th  minute when he pounced from close range but the visitors were level just nine minutes later through Tom Cannon.

But Brownhill put Burnley back in front from the penalty spot before half-time and they held on to extend their unbeaten run to a club-record 31 games.

Burnley’s players celebrated on the pitch at the final whistle – matched by the watching Leeds team at Elland Road.

“I’m speechless. All that hard work this season,” Brownhill told Sky Sports. “We’ve been written off so many times, people calling us boring. We’ve bored our way to the Premier League.

“It takes a whole team – it’s not just a back four, a goalkeeper, it takes everybody.”

Sheffield United are guaranteed to finish third but face a battle to secure a spot in the Premier League through the play-offs.

Burnley relegated from Premier League by Spurs loss

Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after they could not secure a win at Tottenham which would have kept their hopes alive.

The Clarets, who knew a draw or defeat meant they would no longer be able to catch fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, took the lead when Jacob Bruun Larsen slid in a 25th-minute opener.

The joy among the travelling fans was tempered seven minutes later when Pedro Perro hammered in an equaliser.

After dominating the second half without finding a way through, Spurs were finally rewarded when defender Micky van de Ven burst forward and expertly slotted the winner into the bottom corner.

EPL: Danny Ings late goal earns West Ham 2-2 draw against struggling Burnley

West Ham substitute Danny Ings stopped his former club Burnley earning a rare win as the home side bravely fought back from 2-0 down in a pulsating Premier League game.

Ings, who had an effort ruled out by VAR moments before the equaliser, almost nicked a winner but saw his shot cannon off the crossbar in injury-time.

Burnley still moved off the bottom of the Premier League with the draw, but were left to rue dropping more points from a winning position.

The Clarets were on course to earn just their fourth win of the top-flight season – and first victory in 10 attempts – through David Datro Fofana and Konstantinos Mavropanos’s own goal before half-time.

West Ham were lifeless in a poor first half where they did not manage a shot on target.

However, the Hammers reappeared after the break looking like a different side and pulled a goal back within 30 seconds of the restart.

Midfielder Lucas Paqueta showed the desire which had been previously missing to press Burnley high, winning back possession to go clean through and calmly stroke past Clarets keeper James Trafford.

David Moyes’ side continued to press for a leveller and Burnley looked set to hang on for victory until Ings’ dramatic late intervention.

The draw moves Vincent Kompany’s team back above Sheffield United into 19th place on goal difference, with both teams remaining eight points adrift of safety with 10 games remaining.

West Ham, who were aiming for a third straight league win, stay in seventh place.
