  • Students seek payment of bursary, scholarship

The National Union of Lagos State  Students (NULASS) in tertiary institutions has appealed to the government to pay the outstanding 2017/2018 bursary and scholarship of its members.

This is contained in the students’ petition to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kazeem Adeniji, obtained at the weekend in Lagos by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

It was signed by Miss Busola Okoya of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso; Qudus Olaguro, Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education; Bolaji Ojoare, Lagos State University; Ogunowo Olusola, University of Lagos; Waliu Adeyeri, University of Ilorin; Abdulaziz Adeduntan, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Oladele Moses, The Polytechnic, Ibadan and Suliat Olatunji, Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH).

The students said of 10,585 beneficiaries, only 2,106 had received their payments from the 21 per cent of total fund released by the government.

They also claimed that for subsequent payment to the beneficiaries, only students from Epe Division had been paid.

The students said the selective payment appeared inequitable and grossly unjust to other divisions of the state.

“On behalf of the entire students of Lagos State origin in all tertiary institutions across the nation, we write to thank the government for the release of part of the bursary and scholarship funds.

“We are, therefore, appealing to you, to use your good office to prevail on His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, for the release of our outstanding bursary and scholarship funds.

“The scholarship board has begun the sale of forms for new applicants.

“This presupposes that if this administration declines to offset the outstanding, it can become a backlog that will affect 2018/2019 payment.

“We have greatly suffered because of this non-payment. A lot of our members are indebted one way or the other to book sellers and food vendors in and around their campuses.

“Some rely on these funds for their sustenance in school,” they said.

Contacted, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Scholarship Board, Iyana-Ipaja, Mr. Steve Oshinowo, said efforts were on to secure the release of funds for 2017/2018 bursary and scholarship.

NAN reports that beneficiaries include 1,394 local scholarship, 9,188 bursary and three foreign scholarship.

It be recalled that the Kogi state government as part of its “New direction government” promised all indigenous students in the state a fixed sum for their bursary allowances.

Owing to some hitches, the government delayed the process which led to some students making known their displeasure over the state government inability to stick to the agreed date set for the payment.

FESSU also asked the government to give the body a secretariat and a bus, as well as resolve strikes at the Ekiti State University (EKSU) and College of Education in Ikere-Ekiti.

Bursary: Suspend your planned protest, Lagos urges students

Lagos State Government has appealed to members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) to suspend their planned protest against non-payment of bursaries.

Special Adviser to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Education, Mr Obafela Bank-Olemoh, made the plea yesterday following the seven-day ultimatum given the government to pay the bursaries.

Bank-Olemoh said the state government had approved the disbursement of bursaries and scholarships to indigent students studying in tertiary institutions across the country before December 31.

The governor’s aide said plans were already in place to commence the payment, adding that the state government was committed to the welfare of Lagosians, especially students of the state origin.

“The bursary has been approved by the governor. The Lagos State Scholarship Board has begun the process to ensure that the students are paid before the end of December.

“There is no excuse for failure, and it is almost undeniable that the bursary and scholarship meant for Lagosians is a right and long overdue for payment.

“Protests sometimes may not solve the problem; so dialogue is the end product of every agitation.

“I appeal to the students to suspend the ultimatum and wait for the payment of their bursary on or before December 31,” Bank-Olemoh said in a statement.

He said that in spite of the challenging economic situation across the country, the governor had continued to invest in a range of initiatives to upgrade the status of institutions.

According to him, the state government’s commitment to education across the sphere is unparalleled.

“This administration, over the past two and half years, has been deliberate about increasing the capacity of its institutions, with regard to tertiary education.

“This is in line with the continued commitment of this administration, under the leadership of Governor Ambode to ensure that Lagos State students continue to thrive and excel in the academic field.

  • Bursary awards for 100 students

    Bursary awards for 100 students

In fulfilment of one of his campaign promises, the Executive Chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Hon. Shamsudeen Abiodun Olaleye has given out bursary awards to 100 students in higher institutions across the country.

At the award ceremony held at the council’s secretariat on Thursday, the students received the sum of N25, 000 each from the council chief to support their education careers.

In his address, Hon. Olaleye said his administration is giving serious consideration to education; beginning with pupils at crèche level up to students in institutions of higher learning.

“Our aim is to touch the lives of many students as possible in their pursuit of education. We have distributed educational materials to pupils in the crèche classes; we have distributed school bags to primary school pupils; we have organised remedial classes for SS2 students preparing for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) during our first term in office.

“When we were campaigning for re-election, we promised to give bursary awards to students of tertiary institutions who are residents and indigenous to our LCDA. The money we are giving is to reduce the financial burden on their parents. We expect the students to spend the money on things that would impact positively on their education,” he said.

Hon. Olaleye added that the award programme would hold quarterly, even as he enjoined those who did not make the list of first batch of the award recipients to exercise patience as many of them who applied for the programme would have the opportunity to be considered for the award.

The bursary award scheme was first initiated by Hon. Olaleye in 2011 during his first term in office as one of his campaign promises. Over 500 students benefited from the programme.

Some of the students who spoke to Southwest Report after the programme were excited to have received financial assistance from the council chief, saying that the bursary award will spur them to study hard.

One of the beneficiaries, Omidokun Monsurat, a 300-level student of Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, thanked Hon. Olaleye for the gesture.

“I feel excited that I was among the beneficiaries of the bursary award today. I did not expect that I would be selected for the first batch of the award because the day I came for the screening exercise, there were many applicants. I thank God that I was selected for the first batch,” she said.

Another beneficiary Adetayo Kafayat, a 400-level student of Education Management at Lagos State University (LASU) thanked the council chief for the financial assistance.

She described Hon Olaleye as a politician who made promises and fulfilled them. She promised to spend the money judiciously.

In his reaction, Oshodi Babatunde, a 300-level of Computer Science from Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ekiti- State, said the bursary award came when he needed to buy textbooks and handouts. Babatunde, who said he was surprised when he received a text message for the bursary award, prayed that God should grant Olaleye long life.

In a related development, council chief inaugurated three committees to assist him in his bid to deliver good governance to the people.

Among the committees are the bursary award committee headed by Hon. Taiwo Akanimodo; the care for widows and the aged (CAWA) headed by Mr. Olowoniyi Tayo and the Revenue committee headed by Hon. Jubril Yusuf.

On the bursary committee, Olaleye said: “We inaugurated this committee to work on the grey areas we have identified in the first batch of the bursary award and I believe that those who are appointed into the committee are up to the task.

“The Care for Widows, Aged and the Physically Challenged committee is saddled with the responsibility of screening beneficiaries for the award. The revenue committee would ensure the internally-revenue of Isolo LCDA is improved.”

He, therefore, urged members of the committee to use their political experience to improve the internally-generated revenue of Isolo LCDA.

“I strongly believe that the revenue committee would live up to expectations in terms of delivery and good results. Our internal revenue needs to be improved with the inauguration of this committee,” he added.

  • Ize-Iyamu promises scholarship, bursary

    Ize-Iyamu promises scholarship, bursary

Candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has promised to pay bursary as well as give scholarships to Edo students in tertiary institutions.

This, he said, is to guarantee access to quality and affordable education.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu spoke at campaign rally at Ekosodin, a satellite community which serves as residence for thousands of students of University of Benin.

Ize-Iyamu said it was pathetic that the APC government neglected the community in terms of  provision of roads, water supply and electricity despite huge votes recorded from the community.

He said, “I was one of the beneficiaries of the Bursary scheme introduced by the defunct Bendel state Governor, the late Professor Ambrose Folorunsho Alli as an undergraduate in UNIBEN. The bursary helped our parents to a great extent in offsetting such expenses like books and our feeding”.

“Under the Simple Agenda of my government if by the grace of God you elect me as governor, I plan to pay all Edo students in higher institutions of learning bursaries. For those who are exceptionally brilliant we will give them scholarships to attain academic heights because they are a pride to our state “.

“I am proud to be a University of Benin graduate. I also lived for one year in Ekosodin as an undergraduate. The place has always enjoyed a very high population of youths and business people. And as a host community of the University, I believe it deserves more government attention by way of development. What I see here is appalling”.

He urged eligible voters to take APC money but vote for the PDP.
