An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos Thursday convicted a 20-year-old bus conductor, Abass Akanbi, of stealing a motorcycle in the Lekki area of Lagos.

Magistrate O. A. Olagbehinde (Miss) sentenced Akanbi to two months in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos, without an option of fine, after he admitted stealing an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle valued at N127, 000.

The court accepted his plea of guilt after examining, among others, Akanbi’s confessional statement and the stolen motorcycle tendered as exhibits by prosecuting police CorporalFriday Mameh.

Akanbi, an on-off bus conductor with no fixed address, was arrested by the police on April 24, alongside Ganiu Amos, the rider of a commercial motorcycle also known as ‘Okada’.

Both men were arraigned the next day on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, on Charge No. Q/26/2016, but Amos pleaded not guilty.

He was later discharged following Akanbi’s confession that he acted alone and “based on the complainant’s withdrawal letter.”

Corporal Mameh told the court during facts and sentencing Thursday that Akanbi and Amos were apprehended on April 24, around 11:30am at Oba Oyekan Estate, Lekki Phase One, Lagos.

He said Akanbi, pretending to be a passenger, hired the Okada rider to drop him off at Oyekan Estate.

He paid for his fare as he alighted but asked the motorcyclist to wait to take him back while he picked something from the estate.

Akanbi, he added, was apprehended minutes later by security guards at the estate, as he fled on the stolen motorcycle.

Amos was also arrested while waiting for his passenger.

Bus conductor allegedly stabs passenger to death over transport fare

A 30-year-old man, Omoyeni Ojo, has allegedly been stabbed to death by an unidentified bus conductor in the Kilo area of Surulere, Lagos, during a heated exchange on transport fare.

The incident occurred on Saturday, November 28, 2015.

The late Omoyeni, it was learnt, boarded a commercial bus at Ojuelegba area of Surulere and handed the conductor a N500 note in payment of the fare. The conductor was said to have told the deceased that he had no lower denomination of the currency to pay Omoyeni his balance.

The altercation allegedly escalated and the duo engaged in a fight but was separated by other passengers on the bus. The conductor stabbed Rowland with a broken bottle, it emerged.

“He (Omoyeni) boarded the commercial bus at Ojuelegba and gave the conductor N500,” said an eyewitness who asked not to be mentioned. “The transport fare is just

N50 and he demanded a balance of N450 but the conductor told him off. They launched an argument that resulted in a fight but they were separated by other passengers.

“On getting to Kilo Bus Stop, where he disembarked, a fight again broke out between the late Omoyeni and the conductor, when the conductor could not provide his balance of N450. It was during the fight that the conductor stabbed Omoyeni dead with a broken bottle.”

Another eyewitness, who simply identified himself as Gloria, said that Omoyeni fell in a pool of blood and died a few minutes later after drivers at a nearby Taxi Park allegedly declined to take him to hospital. “Omoyeni, aka Rowland, struggled in a pool of his blood for about one hour but no one was ready to take him to hospital. Even the cab drivers around did not assist in taking him to hospital before he died.

“Now, we are living in fear as youths in the area have vowed to take up commercial bus and taxi drivers in the community. As we speak, you can hardly get commercial vehicles to take you to Ojuelegba because of the unfortunate incident.”

There was palpable fear among residents when our correspondent visited the community on Monday. The incident led to a breakdown of peace as outraged youths set the Taxi Park ablaze and chased away the drivers, it was gathered.

A female resident who did not want her name in print said that the late Omoyeni was scheduled to travel to the United States of America on December 10, 2015. “Omoyeni was a very easy going person and ebullient. He was recently granted a visa to travel to US and had planned to leave the shores of Nigeria on December 10. He would have been saved if he got prompt medical attention, but taxi drivers at Kilo Bus Stop refused to take him to a hospital despite the pleading of residents,” she said.

The incident was allegedly reported to Aguda Police Station, Surulere. At press time, the spokesman of Lagos Police Command, Mr Joe Offor, did not respond to enquiries forwarded to his mobile phone by our correspondent. He also failed to respond to calls.

The presiding judge, Albert Maga, convicted Ezekiel after he pleaded guilty for the offence of conspiracy and theft.

The convict, who pleaded for leniency, said, “I don’t have anybody here, I came to this town to look for job but it has not been easy for me.”

Maga said that the accused had not been able to give tangible reasons to the court on why he should not be punished for the offence.

He said that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other offenders of like minds.

“However, the prosecutor was unable to prove the charge of conspiracy as the other suspect is still at large.

“The court hereby discharge the accused on the charge of conspiracy and sentence him to 18 months imprisonment for the offence of theft,” Maga said.

The judge, however, gave the convict an option of N4, 000 fine and also ordered him to pay the complainant N11, 000 as compensation for the stolen phone.

Earlier the prosecutor, Cpl. Friday Adaji told the court that the convict was first arraigned on Aug. 14 but remanded in custody for his accomplice to be arrested.

Adaji said that Ezekiel stole a Nokia phone valued at N11, 000 from the bag of one Luka Ruth at Brother Plaza, Mararaba.

He said that when the convict was caught in the act, he threw the phone to his accomplice, who is now at large.

The prosecutor said the convict contravened the provisions of sections 97 and 287 of the Penal Code.

  • Bus conductor jailed 21 years for robbery

Bus conductor jailed 21 years for robbery

A bus conductor, Sunday Olalekan, was yesterday sentenced to 21 years imprisonment by a Lagos high court sitting in Ikeja for robbery.

The court presided by Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye found Olalekan guilty of robbing one Nkong Remi on February 14, 2013.

The convict, 22, was arraigned by Lagos State Government on a one-count charge of robbery.

    He pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Akin George had accused Olalekan of robbing his victim,  Remi, of her handbag, phones and other valuables on February 13, 2013.

He said the robbery took place at Gani Fawehinmi Garden Ojota, in the Ikeja Judicial Division.

During trial, Remi had told the court that she was driving an ash colour 4runner Jeep on February 14, 2013 going to drop her sister at the park around 6:15am when the robbery took place.

“There was small traffic jam so we slowed down. I heard a loud shout and as I turned to my side, there was a black boy with a mark on his eye, he was accompanied by two other boys, he came to the car window and forced it down. The other two boys jumped in”, she told court.

Remi further explained that their assailants also robbed her sister, rough handled her and fondled her breast before she could drive off.

“I returned back to Gani Fawehinmi’s park around 7am and asked the boys at the park and they told me that some boys were caught and taken to Alausa Police Station.

“When I arrived the station, they asked me if I can recognise the boys and I said yes I will recognize the one with a swollen eye. They took me in and I recognised him (convict),”she added.

However, Olalekan, who testified in Yoruba language, had denied all the allegations.

He claimed to have gone to 7up at Ojota to wait for his boss, one Tunde, but he failed to meet him at the appointed place.

“I met one Jelili, a co-conductor with whom I work with Tunde. After waiting for Tunde till 6pm and we did not see him, Jelili suggested that we should go to the new garage to see if we can see another motor to work with.

“We were approaching New Garage when we saw those PSP people at Owens Park and claimed that some people has robbed a motorist not quite long.

“They stated further that we are the people that robbed them. They started beating us and later handed us over to the police. I did not rob any person or persons,” the convict stated.

Delivering her ruling, the presiding judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, held that the testimony of the victim, Remi, was unshaken during cross-examination.

The trial judge noted that the victim was able to identify the assailant because he was close to her and put his hand in her dress to rough handle her and fondle her breast, looking for money.

“I have carefully considered the total evidence of the prosecution. The essential ingredient is that there must be a robbery and the accused was one of those who took part in the robbery. However none of the stolen items were recovered.

“I have carefully studied Exhibit 1, which is the statement of the defendant. The defendant was in the company of his friend (Jelili) when he was arrested on February 14, 2013.

“In the light of what I have said, I hereby find you Sunday Olalekan guilty of the offence of robbery and sentence you to 21 years imprisonment as stated by law,” the judge said.
