  • Five feared dead as bus plunges into river in Ogun

    Five persons were feared dead in an accident occurred at the J4 – Ogbere – Ijebu stretch of the Benin – Ore expressway when a 18-seater Toyota bus marked (ONDO) AKR 474 XA plunged into the Omo river there.

    The remains of two of the five occupants of the were evacuated as at noon time Thursday when the bus filled with consumable goods, was eventually pulled out of the river.

    The Ondo state bound bus had taken off from Idumota in Lagos Island before it fell into the river while operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and that of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) spent time before the vehicle could be pulled out from the Omo river.

    The Ogun state sector commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Adetunji Adegoke, said the vehicle while travelling on the Sagamu-Benin-Ore Expressway, plunged into Omo River.

    According to Adegoke, officials of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) said five passengers were inside the ill-fated bus.

    “From information we gathered from the RTEAN officials, the commercial vehicle was travelling from Idumota on Lagos Island to Ondo town when the driver lost control and the vehicle plunged into Omo River along the Sagamu-Benin-Ore Expressway.

    “We learnt only five passengers were inside the vehicle. Three males and two females.”

     

  • Worker ‘steals’ firm’s bus

    A worker with China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), Isaac Shalegh was yesterday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court in Lagos for allegedly stealing the firm’s Toyota Hiace bus.

    Shalegh, 29, was docked alongside Bem Takpa, 38; Tor Matthew, 30; Sefa Akuhwa, 34; and Tevershima Ahura, 32, on a seven-count charge of conspiracy, dishonest conversion and duplication of keys, stealing, and receiving of stolen goods.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Adegoke Akinlade said the offence was committed on August 1, about 5pm, at Iya Calabar beer parlour in Ebute Meta, Lagos

    He alleged that ýShalegh duplicated the key of the bus marked KTU878AX and facilitated its removal by Matthew and Takpa, from where it was parked.

    Akinlade said Akuhwa received the bus and defaced it.

    The offence, he said, contravened Sections 278, 326, 337, 409 and 413 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty and were granted N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The matter was adjourned till October 28.

    A lady, Olatokun Olubisi who was involved in a fatal accident in which all passengers were reported dead is alive.
    The accident occurred on August 19 along the Lagos-Ibadan Express road when a trailer crashed into an 18-sitter bus carrying Olubisi and other the passengers.
    Olubisi is receiving treatment at the emergency ward at University College Hospital, UCH Ibadan, with the family and church battling to pay the medical bills.
    ” We need help from kind hearted people to bring her back to her feet to celebrate God’s faithfulness,” Pastor Emmanuel Falodun of Power for Exploits International stated in an email to The Nation.

  • Sifax donates bus to OAU

    Sifax Group, a multinational corporation with diverse interests in maritime, aviation, haulage and logistics, oil and gas and hospitality, has donated an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus to the medical students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife under the aegis of Ife University Medical Students Association (IFUMSA).

    Presenting the bus on the university campus, the Head, Marketing and Corporate Affairs, Sifax Group, Mr. Oliver Omajuwa, said corporate social responsibility is at the core of the company’s business philosophy.

    He said: “Sifax Group has a philosophy of positively impacting the society. The company is not only about profit making but contributing its quota to the development of critical areas. One of such key areas for us is education. From primary school to the university level, Sifax Group has been supporting institutions through various avenues, especially the provision of infrastructure and equipment.

    “This bus donation is in furtherance of our belief that the private sector has an important role to play in the improvement of the quality of education in the country. We are particularly excited that this bus would be of great help to the medical students, in particular and the university as a whole.”

    The Provost, College of Health Sciences, Prof Adesegun Fatusi, noted that universities need to build solid partnerships with various stakeholders in order to fulfil their objectives. These stakeholders, according to Fatusi, include corporate organisations, alumni, parents, students, and staff, among others. He said these partnerships are necessary in view of the inadequate allocations the universities receive from the governments.

     

  • Bus conductor remanded for alleged murder

    In Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has remanded a 25-year old bus conductor, Idris Rilwan, for allegedly killing one Egunjobi Rotimi, 34.

    The defendant was said to have conspired with others to commit the offence. He was said to have shot Rotimi dead

    The incident occurred on February 16 during a fight between Rilwan and Rotimi at Abule-Oba Costain.

    The charge reads.”That you Idris Rilwan and others now at large on February 16 at about 11pm at Costain area of Lagos in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit murder and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    “That you Idris Rilwan did unlawfully kill one Egunjobi Rotimi, 34, by shooting him with a gun and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos.”

    Prosecuting police Inspector Cousin Adam prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody pending legal advice from the office of Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The defence counsel, Mr Saka Bello, applied for the withdrawal of the charge against his client for want of “proper investigation”.

    Magistrate Nurudeen Layeni ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ikoyi prison pending legal advice from DPP’s office. He adjourned the matter to April 7.

  • Minister donates bus to students

    The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) was among the beneficiaries of the largesse from the Minister of State for Federal Capital Territory, Mrs. Jumoke Akinjide. The minister donated a Marcopolo bus to the union.

    Mrs. Akinjide, who gave a bus each to four tertiary institutions in Oyo State, said the gesture was aimed at empowering the youth and supporting their cause.

    The donation was made at a programme at Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan last weekend.

    She said the motive was to alleviate the suffering of students in transporting themselves within and outside school and to improve their welfare as a mother.

    Other institutions that benefitted from the gesture are Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso, The Polytechnic, Ibadan (IBADAN POLY) and Emmanuel Alayande College of Education in Oyo.

    The UI union president, Oluwafemi Odesola, praised the minister for identifying with students, saying transportation remained challenge facing tertiary institutions.

    Oluwafemi said the union would discuss on how the bus should be used to ensure that every student benefitted.

    A student, who did not want his name in print, described the bus as a political gift extended to students because of 2015 elections. He urged students of the institution to engage politicians through their party manifestos for the youth and not by “emergency gift”.

    Amosun’s aides, others injure in bus, convoy collision

    Two aides of Governor Ibikunle Amosun and some occupants of a commercial Mitsubishi bus conveying foodstuffs were injured yesterday morning when the passenger bus ran into one of the Sports Utility Vehicles(SUV) in the convoy of the governor.

    The accident occurred at about 9.30am on Sapaade-Ogere, Ogun State, stretch of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway when the governor was travelling to Ekiti State.

    The affected jeep in the convoy was damaged.

    According to a source, the vehicles in Amosun’s convoy were going in the direction of Ibadan, Oyo State, when the rickety bus coming at the opposite end crashed into one of them.

    It was learnt that the accident occurred at a failed portion of the road, where repair work was being carried out.

    The driver of the commercial bus, it was gathered, lost control when he came face-to-face with  convoy at the bad portion  and rammed into  it.

    The women in the commercial bus were said to have been injured even as the governor alighted to sympathise with them.

    Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Yusuph Olaniyonu, who confirmed this to reporters, said no life was lost.

    He noted that it was just a minor accident as nobody sustained injury.

    He said: “We are going to Ekiti. Only one jeep was affected and we have transferred the occupants to our own bus.”

    Foundation donates bus to UNILAG

    The Founder/Chief Promoter of Omo Ilu Foundation, Prince Kashamu Buruji, has donated a brand new 18-seater bus to the Department of English, University of Lagos.

    The 2014 model bus, which has been officially presented to the university, was received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon A. Bello, along with principal and top officials of the university, such as: Deputy Vice-Chancellor DVC (Academic & Research), Prof. Babajide Alo; DVC  (Management Service), Prof. Duro Oni; Registrar, Dr. Taiwo Folasade Ipaye; Bursar, Mr. Lateef Odekunle and Librarian, Dr. Olukemi Fadehan.

    Others who witnessed the presentation were the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola; Director, Academic Planning, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe; Director, Quality Assurance & Servicom, Prof. Wale Okunuga and Director, Works and Physical Planning, Dr. Adelere Adeniran.

    Speaking at the presentation, the general/media adviser to the Kashamu, Mr. Austin Oniyokor, said the donation is borne out of Kashamu’s strong desire to give back to his alma mater and contribute to Nigeria’s education sector. He thanked authorities of the university for providing the opportunity for the foundation to support it.

    Prof Bello expressed gratitude to Prince Kashamu for the gesture, describing it as the kind of support needed to keep the university as a first-class tertiary institution.

    While urging other alumni of the university to emulate Kashamu, Bello reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustaining the reputation of the institution as a centre for excellence in teaching, learning and research.

  • Principal donates bus

    The Proprietor and Principal of Greater Tomorrow International School, (GTI) Agbaluku -Akoko, Ondo State , Mr. James Olatunbosun Lawal and his wife ,Mojisola have donated an 18-seater bus to St.Thomas Anglican Church , Ese- Ikare , Ondo State.

    The donation was in appreciation of the Olatunbosuns who were honoured with the titles-Otunba Baba Ijo and Iya Akorin of the church.

    The ex-students of Greater Tomorrow International (GTI) as well as the Parents /Teachers Association were not left out as they trooped out to honor their principal whom they fondly referred to as ‘ Uncle Lawal’.

    In his sermon, the officiating minister, Rt Reverend Gabriel Akinbiyi of Akoko North Diocese, justified the duo’s honours considering their contributions to the development of the church.

    Mr.Obajuluwa, a long time friend of the couple described them as worthy of being emulated. His words: “The couple turned this environment to international community as people from all walks of life bring their wards to this school. With GTI cited here, the Agbaluku town has grown beyond expectation”.

    The Parakoyi of Ikire, HRH Oba Okeluse, Mrs.Idowu Omolayo, described the honorees as good, loving and God-fearing. He said: “Lawal is a philanthropist; he is a very humble personality who has contributed greatly to his home town in Ikire.”

    Speaking at the occasion, Lawal thanked the church for the honour, assuring that his family would do more.

    “Now, I believe that I have more responsibilities to do for the church than before. I believe we should contribute our own quota to the development of the church because it is our first home where morals are taught,” he said.

    One of the school’s teachers who craved anonymity said: “Lawal who is fondly called ‘Uncle’ by his students has contributed immensely to the development of not only Ikire but also anywhere he finds himself. He is not arrogant. He renders selfless service to humanity, a task that many find difficult.”
