  • Immigration CG warns against special posting of cadets

Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has concluded plans to effect 10 years validity of the Nigerian passport to Nigerians. Controller General of Immigration, Muhammad Babandede, made this disclosure yesterday at the  graduation ceremony of 652 Cadet officers of the 43rd Superintendent Basic Course, held at the Immigration Training School, Kano.

Babandede warned that the service will not recognize any high profile note or call soliciting special posting for officers and cautioned the new cadets to accept their new postings in good faith. Recalling that the service is currently ICT driven, with full automated services, including visa issuance and passport  application process, he reminded the new cadets that ICT compliance is mandatory, adding that the graduands are the first to be trained on the new curriculum designed for all the training institutions of the NIS and the Immigration training school, Kano inclusive.

“With the rigorous training you received in the last six months and the oath you took yesterday, you are today certified fit to fully join the NIS team as Immigration officers in line with Immigration Act. NIS is a professional service and a paramilitary institution. In view of the above, we expect not less than 100 per cent loyalty to the rule of law and the Federal republic of Nigeria from you,” he said.

Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, who was represented by Commissioner, NIS management board, Alhaji Ado Ja’faru, restated the federal government’s commitment to strengthening national security. He therefore urged those graduating to ensure that they are always guided by the training they received, as well as by the agency’s rules of engagement in their conduct.

“As the supervising ministry, we shall continue to ensure that we attend to the genuine needs of all the services under our purview, including NIS, for enhanced service delivery,” he said.

  • Abscond for seven days, be rusticated, Commandant warns cadets

    •As NDA matriculates 470

As 470 cadets were matriculated into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) yesterday, the Commandant of the Academy, Major General Adeniyi Oyebade, has warned the officer cadets not to abscond from the Academy, otherwise, they will face dire consequences.

Oyebade gave the warning during the matriculation ceremony for cadets of 70th Regular Course at the academy’s permanent site in Kaduna yesterday, charging them to be of good character, principle and integrity.

According to the Commandant, “If you abscond from Academy for seven days and you are gone. If you leave for three days you will be demoted.”

He also advised parents not to make unnecessary demands from their children which might make them lose focus in the academy.

He said, “The officers that we need in battle must have good disciplines, character and integrity. If you don’t have all these, your men will not listen to you. You were chosen out of the over 10,000 candidates and women who competed for the admission, so I want you to be among the officers and generals who will lead the country successfully in the future.

“Your character must be your guiding principle. The military is not about coercion but a free choice.”

He said the standard of the NDA is being improved upon on the daily basis and as such, assured that the NDA will provide the cadets with the best skills required of any military formation in the world.

The Special Guest of Honour, Brigadier General Tai Pedro advised the cadets to take every bit of their military and academic training very seriously, saying that such are the necessary ingredients needed to succeed in their career.

  • Maritime academy for cadets, experts

The Charkin Maritime Academy (CMA), Port Harcourt, Rivers State,  is shopping for professionals in the maritime industry.

This was part of its bid to meet the standards set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and ensure it’s courses are line with the guidelines and conventions of the global maritime watchdog.

Though many professionals are required, the academy, findings revealed, is presently shopping for marine engineers, lecturers, librarian, Cadets Regimental Unit (RUC) Commander, laboratory technologist and registrar.

The  institution took the step to meet the requirements of local regulatory agencies such as the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

Acting Provost of the academy, Dr. Egben Okore told  The Nation that the move  to recruit more professionals into the CMA was informed by the need to beef up the present workforce as well as prepare ahead of some of its courses and programmes.

Okore said that interested applicants and students are free to take advantage of the openings in the school for a future career in maritime, oil and gas industries and beyond.

It was part of the institution’s  expansion programmes that the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike had in February this year, unveiled Nigeria’s first ever land ship, MV Rivers Pride built by the CMA. The land ship houses some of the equipment and facilities required by the institution.

These comprise full mission navigational bridge simulator; ECDIS Simulation Room; GMDSS (Navigation) Simulation Room which conforms to the 2010 Manila Amendments by the IMO; and the basic dynamic positioning class.

Other components of the land ship are advance dynamic positioning and examination class; nautical institute examination room; and the drilling system crane simulator.

Wike also used the occasion to announce an approval of a certificate of occupancy for the land in which the land ship is situated at Ozuoba, along the East-West Road, Port Harcourt.

The governor praised the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Charkin Maritime and Offshore Safety Centre, Sir Charles K. Wami for the strides he has made since the establishment of the facility.

  • NDA to investigate allegation of cadets keeping uniforms with Fulani herdsmen

NDA to investigate allegation of cadets keeping uniforms with Fulani herdsmen

The Nigerian Defence Academy has reacted to a report making the rounds on social media that some cadets of the Academy abscond from the institution for days, keeping their military uniforms and other property in the care of Fulani herdsmen.

The academy in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Major Musa Yahaya, appreciated the vigilance and forthrightness of the writer of the article, assuring the writer and other well-meaning Nigerians that the Academy’s authorities had duly noted his observations, adding that full scale investigation was underway.

He said: “We wish to reinforce the confidence of the public that our cadets are being trained under the strictest and most disciplined environment as befitting of a world-class military training institution. There are established procedures and guidelines that ensure cadets remain in the Academy.

“All cadets are to remain in the Academy except when duly authorised to leave, as provided by the rules and regulations of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

“For instance, any cadet discovered to be absent from the Academy for a period of 72 hours will be Struck of Strength (SOS) and ceases to be a cadet of the Academy. All our cadets are aware of this and strict enforcement ensured where a cadet is found to have erred.

“Again, the Nigerian Defence Academy appreciates the vigilance of the writer and avers that security is the collective responsibility of all Nigerians, be they military personnel or civilians.”

  • Legion to cadets: render selfless services to nation

•Sewing machines donated to 65 widows

The Nigerian Legion Corps of Commissionaires has warned its cadets against harassment of the people.

It urged them to render selfless service to the nation and conduct themselves well in the course of their duties.

The Legion’s National Chairman, Col. Micah Gayya (retd.), spoke at the weekend during the passing out parade of Batch “B” cadets of the Delta State Command at the Petroleum Training Institute in Effurun.

Gayya said there were usual misgivings about the legion because of alleged misconducts of some members.

The Legion chief, who inaugurated a new patrol vehicle for the state command, advised the members to avoid being used for “contraband or to harass” the public.

He said the Legion was not competing with any security agency but was established to create jobs.

Gayya said: “The idea is to get them jobs to do and the service we know best is security. We are deployed in government offices and private homes, but we are not in competition with any security outfit.”

The Legion chief presented sewing machines to 50 widows of fallen heroes from the 25 local government areas of the state and 15 others from Nigerian Army’s 3 Battalion Barracks in Effurun.

He hailed the state command for remembering the women, saying it was impossible to reach out to all widows across the country.

Gayya said: “It is utterly impossible to reach out to all the widows in the country. Some state chairmen are doing well; others are not. Please, do not sell these items, but do what will get you something to support your family.”

The state commandant, Corps Commander Anthony Ohiri, urged the new cadets to “maintain high level of ethical standards” and render selfless service to their fatherland.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included corps commandants from Bayelsa, Cross River and Edo states as well as officers at the national office of the legion.

Others included Veteran Affairs Division of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Jude Alozie and Delta State Head Pastor of Deeper Life Church, Pastor Jude Chukwocha.

  • Two Airforce officers arrested for locking boy in car boot

Two Airforce officers arrested for locking boy in car boot

Two cadets’ officers, Peters O. Solomon and Abdullahi Fahad were Wednesday apprehended by the convoy of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode in Mile 12 area of the State while dehumanizing an artisan, Dahiru Lawal for allegedly breaking the windscreen of their Chrysler Stratus car with registration number KRD 267 DV.

The cadets who claimed to be Airforce personnel attached to the Airforce Base in Ikeja, had forced Lawal into the boot of their car after dragging him on the ground for the said offence.

Governor Ambode, who was returning from an inspection tour to Agbowa in Ikorodu, saw the situation and swiftly intervened to save Lawal who was gasping for breath.

The Governor wondered how such inhuman treatment could be meted to a fellow citizen just for slightly breaking the windscreen of a car.

When questioned by journalists, the cadets admitted putting Lawal in the boot of their car.

According to them, Lawal tried to escape after breaking the windscreen and ran into the nearby market where they eventually chased and apprehended him.

Peters said: “What happened is that the boy broke the windscreen in front of my car. When I stopped, I asked him to come, the boy ran away. We have to drag him back and put him in the boot.

“I kind of threatened his boss that he is working with and when his boss came and looked at what he did to me, that was when I put him inside the boot for the remaining ones to go and call the boss. Not that I locked the boot, I only put him inside, but I did not lock it,” he said.

Also Abdullahi said himself and Peter were along Mile 12 after visiting a friend when the Lawal damaged their windscreen and he was attempting to escape.

“We now ran inside the market and dragged him (Lawal) down. I was even asking who he is working with because I want to see his Oga since I know he cannot repair my damaged windscreen. I want to see the man he is working with so that we can settle everything with him. I now told my colleague that we should hand him over to Airforce police at the Airforce Base,” Abdullahi said.

While narrating his ordeal in the hands of the cadets, Lawal who hails from Kaduna State, said he mistakenly damaged the windscreen with the load he carried, and that he took to his heels because he was afraid of what they might do to him.

He said: “I ran into the market and they pursued me and caught me inside the market. They started beating me and dragged me to their car.”

“I ran because I was afraid of what the cadets might do to me, while my boss and people around begged on my behalf, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.”

“The police also came to plead with them to open the booth but they insisted on taking me away and it was at that point that the convoy of the Governor arrived to rescue me from the booth of the car where they kept me,” Lawal narrated.

He added that he lost his cell phone and the sum of N5, 000 which he was having on him at the point that he was being dragged on the floor.

The Governor had since ordered that the suspects be handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
