  • CAF set to celeberate 25th year awards night

CAF set to celeberate 25th year awards night

Nigeria is set to host the  annual CAF Awards which  enters its 25th edition this year  on Thursday 5, 2017

The King of African football will be crowned at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, among the trio of last year’s winner, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Gabon, Riyad Mahrez of Algeria and Senegalese Sadio Mane.

From 1992 to 2015, from Ghana’s Abedi Pele to Gabonese Aubameyang, 15 players have laid claim to the most prestigious individual honour in African football.

Cameroonian Samuel Eto’o was the first to be crowned on four occasions – 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010; a record since equalled by Toure, who made it four on the trot (2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014). Former Senegal forward, El Hadji Diouf won the award twice in a row; 2001 and 2002.

However, the first player to have been named CAF African Player of the Year on two occasions was ex-Nigeria captain, Nwankwo Kanu, in 1996 and 1999 before Ivorian Didier Drogba replicated the feat in 2006 and 2009.

Winners of the prestigious honour have come from either the midfield or attack; and that tradition will be respected yet again this time, with the three contenders being attackers.

In addition, the 15 players to have been decorated since 1992, have and continue to remain amongst the foremost African ambassadors of the world’s most popular sport.

There are also several others who were so near and yet so far, including Ivorian goalkeeper Alain Gouamene in 1992; Moroccan defender Noureddine Naybet (sixth in 1993); Nigerian Daniel Amokachi, who regularly featured among the top ten (10) whilst Chadian Japhet N’Doram was virtually handicapped by the non-presence of his national team at the final phase of a major continental championship.

South African defender, Mark Fish also settled for sixth position in 1996. Ghanaian defender Samuel Kuffour narrowly missed out on two occasions, 1999 and 2001.

Others are Michael Essien of Ghana, who made the final three an unprecedented five times in a row – 2005 (third), 2006 (third), 2007 (second), 2008 (third) and 2009 (third); Asamoah Gyan, also from Ghana, 2010 (second); Andre Ayew (Ghana), 2011 (third) & 2015 (third) and Malian Seydou Keita, 2011 (second). So are Nigerian duo, John Obi Mikel and Vincent Enyeama, who finished second and third in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

When the roll call for the laureates is launched, there is one noticeable observation. Cote d’Ivoire is the country which has the biggest number of triumphs, six in total, Toure (four) and Drogba (two); followed by Nigeria on five titles, two for Kanu, one each for Emmanuel Amunike, Rashidi Yekini and Victor Ikpeba.

Patrick Mboma won it once coupled with Eto’o’s four also gives Cameroon five titles. Diouf is responsible for the only two titles in the name of Senegal. One-time winners include Ghana – Abedi Pele, Liberia – George Weah (the only African player to have been crowned FIFA World Footballer of the Year), Morocco – Mustapha Hadji, Mali – Frederic Kanoute and Togo – Emmanuel Adebayor and Aubameyang on the ticket of Gabon.

Another common feature is that all winners plied their trade in Europe at the time of their coronation.

For the last decade, the Awards Gala has been sponsored by Cellular Telecommunications outfit, Globacom, who have raised the bar of excellence with splendid ceremonies in cities such as Abuja, Accra, Lome, Lagos and Cairo.

Iwobi, Iheanacho in race for CAF Awards

Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City are in the running for various CAF Awards.
In the category of Most Promising Talent, Iheanacho is listed with fellow Nigerian Oghenekaro Etebo, Guinean Naby Keita, Elia Meshack of DR Congo and Ramadan Soby of Egypt.
Iheanacho scored in four consecutive matches for the Super Eagles against Mali, Luxembourg, Tanzania and Zambia, and had been quite impressive for his English top tier club, for whom he scored in the UEFA Champions League last week.
Etebo was the hero of Nigeria’s bronze medal feat at the Olympics in Brazil, scoring four goals in the 5-4 thumping of Japan.
The Youth Player of the Year list was headed by Iwobi, who scored Nigeria’s first goal of the 2018 FIFA World Cup race, away to Zambia in Ndola in October. He contests with Ghanaians Eric Ayiah and Sandra Owusu-Ansah, Ivorian Franck Kessie and Mali U20 ace Sidiki Maiga.
Super Falcons’ forward Asisat Oshoala was listed alongside South African Janine Van Wyk, Ghanaian Elizabeth Addo and Cameroonians Gabrielle Aboudi Onguene and Raissa Feudjio Tchuanyo for the Women’s Player of the Year.
Oshoala won the award in 2014, alongside being named Youth Player of the Year.
Cameroonian Gaelle Deborah Enganamouit was named Women’s Player of the Year 2015. Florence Omagbemi, the only person to have won the Women Africa Cup of Nations as captain and coach, contests for Coach of the Year with DR Congo’s Florent Ibenge, Uganda Coach Milutin Sredojevic, Nacer Sandjak of CAF Confederation Cup winners MO Bejaia and Pitso Mosimane of CAF Champions League winners Mamelodi Sundowns.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will battle for Women’s Team of the Year with Cameroon, Ghana, South Africa and Zimbabwe, while Nigeria’s U23 team, bronze winners at the Olympics, will tug with DR Congo (CHAN winners), Senegal, Guinea Bissau and Uganda (the last two for qualifying for 2017 AFCON). Guinea Bissau is making its debut, while Uganda is back among the elites of African football after 38 years.
Sundowns, Bejaia, TP Mazembe, Zamalek and Zesco United compete for Club of the Year, while Gambian Papa Gassama, Egyptian Ghead Grisha and Senegalese Malang Diedhiou are in the race for Referee of the Year. Incidentally, Gassama handled the Nigeria/Algeria 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo, while Grisha was in charge of the first qualifying match away to Zambia in Ndola.
The awards ceremony is slated for January 5 in Abuja.

  • CAF awards: Enyeama better than Toure, Aubameyang – Agu

CAF awards: Enyeama better than Toure, Aubameyang – Agu

Former Nigeria goalkeeper, Alloy Agu, has said Vincent Enyeama deserves to be crowned Africa’s best player for 2014, ahead of current holder Yaya Toure, and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang.

The former Super Eagles shot stopper said Enyeama had a better 2014 when compared to his adversaries, and as a result, he is more deserving of the award.

“If you check the calendar year of 2014, you will see that Vincent (Enyeama) did better that both Yaya Toure and the other guy (Aubameyang).

“He was one of the reasons why we qualified to the World Cup and his performances at the World Cup was better than Yaya Toure’s and the other guy (Aubameyang) didn’t even make it to the World Cup.

“And for their clubs, Enyeama kept so many clean sheets and even went several games without conceding and that says a lot,” Agu told sl10.ng.

But despite the air of optimism about Enyeama’s chances, Agu however admitted that being a goalkeeper could play against the Nigerian captain.

“Unfortunately they always favour outfield players and we must say Yaya Toure has done well too. But I think it should be about the whole team, and not just where you play because if it goes this way, it may be a disadvantage for Vincent (Enyeama),” he added.

  • I wish Mikel had won CAF award – Minister

I wish Mikel had won CAF award – Minister

Sports Minister Bolaji Abdulahi on Friday expressed disappointment that Mikel Obi failed to clinch the Glo/CAF African Footballer of the Year Award.
Abdulahi, made the remark in a chat with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
He said that Yaya Toure of Cote d’Ivoire considered all the nominees in the category as worthy contenders despite the fact that he beat Mikel to the second position.
The minister said, “I was hopeful that Mikel was going to win but it’s okay, he still has a long way to go; I mean there will be other opportunities.
“But I can assure you that Mikel is the winner because every Nigerian in this hall wanted him to win.
“I think that’s a good indication. For me that’s enough reason to celebrate. I congratulate Yaya Toure. In fact, he’s a great footballer.
“He’s an excellent footballer; he deserves the award. Yeah, we feel disappointed that Mikel didn’t win but better luck, next time. “
The minister urged the home-based Super Eagles now in South Africa for African Football Championship to strive hard in the competition scheduled to run from January 11 to February 1.
“ They are a new team, and they have done well enough to qualify for the first time in our history for the CHAN.
“I just will urge them to go to the tournament they are there in South Africa and do their best.
“So I think it’s a good one for us that they are competing at all at the tournament,’’ he said.
