    Enyimba scale through’, Rangers crash out in CAF Cups 

    Enyimba International  FC of  Aba remains  the only Nigerian team left  in the continental  cup after the Aba-based  side advanced to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup at the expense of Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso following a penalty shootout.

    Both teams failed to score in both legs of this clash and it needed a penalty shootout to decide the overall winners.

    Enyimba shaded it 3-2 to move ahead in the competition.

    Meanwhile, Nigeria will again not be represented in the money-spinning group stage of the CAF Champions League after NPFL champions Enugu Rangers crashed out in the playoffs to Angola’s Esperanca Sagrada.

    Sagrada won 3-1  to go through to the group stage 3-2 on aggregate.

    Nigeria’s other representatives  in this year’s CAF  Continental Cups, Remo Stars and El Kanemi Warriors  were knocked out in the previous round of the Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively.

    Nigeria’s duo of Rangers International and Remo Stars will respectively face Comorian and Moroccan opponents in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League for 2024/25 season after the conclusion of the draw held in Cairo, Egypt yesterday.

    The NPFL  champions, Rangers landed Union Sportive de Zilimadjou of Comoros during the draw conducted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) while Remo Stars will slug it out with battle-hardened AS FAR of Morocco in a repeat of the 2022 encounter in the CAF Confederation Cup.

    Rangers will make a trip first to Moroni for the first leg but Remo Stars will host the first leg at home before travelling away for the return leg.

    In the second tier club competition, CAF Confederation Cup, President Federation Cup winners, El-Kanemi Warriors were handed a tough first round game at home to Dadje FC of Benin Republic.

    Nigeria’s second representatives Enyimba International were drawn bye to the first preliminary round into the second where they will play the winner between Hafia of Guinea and Rahimo FC of Burkina Faso.

    Enyimba FC are among the 12 top teams drawn bye from the first round based on their previous record in the competition. Others in that category were USMA Algiers, (Algeria), ASEC Mimosas (Cote d’Ivoire), Stade Malien (Mali), El Masry and Zamalek (Egypt) , Simba (Tanzania), Sekhukhune (South Africa), RS Berkane (Morocco), AS Vita and FC Lupopo (DR Congo).
