    Amapakabo, Rangers board meet on CAF Champions League preparations

    •League, Federation Cup too

    Enugu Rangers’ head  coach, Imama Amapakabo has met with the Board of the Flying Antelopes and some officials of the club to intimate them about his programme for next season in the league and CAF Champions League.

    The meeting was not concluded on Friday but Amapakabo was told to come back on Monday so that the Board could finalise his programme and for the Enugu side to proceed on a training camp to Benin, the Edo State capital on Friday.

    Rangers secured their first league title in 32 years last season and the team had their build up to the last season in Benin same place they are trying to visit once more to get the proper shape for the next soccer season.

    Rangers’ Director of Media and Publicity, Foster Chime told SportingLife that Imama was with the Board on Friday where some far reaching decisions were taken including looking through the programme submitted by the head coach ahead of next season.

    He said Imama is expected back with the Enugu Board today to finalise the club’s programme ahead of the new campaign.

    Mfon Udoh honoured by CAF nomination

    All-time record scorer of the Nigeria league, Mfon Udoh has said he is deeply honoured to be listed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for Best Player of 2016 award for players plying their trade in Africa.

    The Enyimba striker netted nine times in this year’s CAF Champions League and said he will be fulfilled if he eventually wins the award.

    “I feel honored to be nominated for the CAF award. I wasn’t expecting it, but I feel great and honoured by this recognition. All credit for this goes to God first, my teammates and coaches.” he said.

    “I will be fulfilled if I win the award. ”

    Another Nigerian striker, Chisom Chikatara of Wydad Casablanca from Morocco is among the players nominated for the award.

    WCQ: FIFA picks Egyptian officials for Zambia-Nigeria clash

    Egyptian referees led by Ghead Grisha will handle World Cup qualifier between Zambia and Nigeria slated for October 9 in Ndola.

    Grisha was also in charge of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations group phase clash between the Super Eagles and the Chipolopolo, at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, South Africa, africanFootball.com reports.

    Grisha, who has been a FIFA referee since 2008, will be assisted by fellow Egyptians Tahssen Abo El Sadat Bedyer (assistant referee 1), Ahmed Hossameldin Taha (assistant referee 2) and Ibrahim Noureldin (fourth official).

    Former FIFA referee, Zeli Sinko, from Cote d’Ivoire, will serve as referee assessor, while former Ghana FA president, Mahamadu Nuru Deen Jawula, will be the match commissioner.

    CAF rejects Pinnick’s nomination for FIFA seat

    Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president, Amaju Pinnick, will not vie for a FIFA council seat later this month after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rejected his nomination for a place in the football’s world governing body.

    The elections into the FIFA Council hold on September 29 and CAF has shortlisted seven candidates for the polls.

    They are Almamy Kabele Camara (Guinea), Suketu Patel (Seychelles), Kwesi Nyantakyi (Ghana), Ahmad (Madagascar), Augustin Senghor (Senegal), Hamidou Djibrilla (Niger) and Chabur Goc Alei (South Sudan).

    The candidates will undergo the FIFA integrity test, before their names are finally ratified for the ballot, africanFootball.com reports.

    CAF move Zamalek vs Enyimba to Monday

    THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) have confirmed that a CAF Champions League Group B tie between Zamalek and Enyimba will now be played on Monday.

    Enyimba protested against a sudden shift of the match from Sunday to Saturday, saying they do not have enough players in Egypt to honour the game as five of their players were on their way to Egypt from a playing tour of Spain.

    Enyimba need to win this match to stay in contention of qualification for the semifinals of the competition as they are without any points after two rounds of matches.

    Zamalek have three points, while Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa have already won the three-team group with nine points from three matches.

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Total reached an agreement recently under which the Group will become the official sponsor of African football for the next eight years.

    Total will support CAF’s ten principal competitions, starting with the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which has a global audience. Renamed the Total Africa Cup of Nations, the tournament will be held in Gabon from January 14th to February 5th, 2017.

    26 Eaglets fail MRI screening

    A staggering 26 members of the Golden Eaglets squad preparing for Saturday’s U-17 African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifier against Niger failed the mandatory MRI screening conducted last week, team officials have said.

    The MRI screening, conducted at the instance of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), was carried out on 60 players in the Eaglets’ camp.

    A top team official told africanFootball.com that several members of the Eaglets starting XI had been excluded from the team with only two players surviving.

    “It is a disaster. Virtually the starting XI the coaches had been working on had been disqualified. It is a serious problem,” another official added.

    Multi-national oil company, Total is the new title sponsor of the Africa’s foremost football event, the Africa Cup of Nations, according the Confederation of African football (CAF) has said.

    Total replaces telephone company Orange as the AFCON sponsors.

    The sponsorship agreement lasts eight years, africanFootball.com reports.

    The sponsorship also covers the women’s Nations Cup, U-17, U-20 and U-23 championships, the African Nations Championship (CHAN), CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup and Super Cup.

    Enyimba skipper Chinedu Udoji has said he has recovered in time from an eye injury to be available for Sunday’s CAF Champions League Group B clash against Zamalek of Egypt.

    Enyimba host Zamalek in Port Harcourt on the opening match day of the money-spinning stage for the Champions League.

    “I am fit for the match on Sunday,” said hard-tackling Udoji.

    CAF commiserates with NFF on Keshi’s death

    The Confederation of African Football (CAF) president, Issa Hayatou, on Wednesday condoled with the president of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, and Nigerians on the death of former Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi.

    Hayatou in a statement on CAF website expressed his “dismay” and “immense sadness” at the death of the former Eagles’ captain.

    He paid glowing tribute to the deceased, who was the only African coach to qualify two African teams to the World Cup – Togo in 2006 and Nigeria in 2014, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    “’His other enviable record was being the only African trainer to have steered a team to the Second Round of the FIFA World Cup, with Nigeria at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

    “He had achieved the same feat as a player with the Super Eagles at the country’s maiden participation at the Mundial in 1994, in USA.

    “’The CAF president conveyed the condolences on his own behalf, the CAF Executive Committee and African football family on the demise of Keshi, who was a jewel to his family, friends and the Nigerian football family, who are badly affected.

    “This is a man, who was twice winner of the Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria; in 1994 as captain and in 2013 as a coach, with the latter earning him the distinction of Coach of the Year at the Glo-CAF Awards,” NAN quoted the CAF president  as saying in the statement.
