  • ICAN, Caleb Varsity sign MoU

    Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), under its Mutual Cooperative Agreement with Tertiary Institutions (MCATI), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Accounting programme of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos.

    Addressing workers, management and students of the university, ICAN President Mr Mohammadu Zakari, said the deal would allow 200-Level undergraduates to have 11 subjects exemption when writing the final ICAN examination.

    According to him, five foundation and six skill level subjects would be exempted for the students. This initiative, Zakari hopes, would deepen the quality of Accounting profession, and develop technical competence and ethical skills among students.

    Going down memory lane, Zakari said ICAN which started with 215 members, currently boasts 42,283, and 22,592 chartered accountants and associate accounting technicians respectively, an attestation to its ethically committed professionals who are making the institution proud nationwide.

    “ICAN members hold very important positions in Nigeria. Therefore, the MoU we are signing is essentially a collaboration between Caleb University and ICAN, whereby the former’s syllabus will be integrated in line with the approved syllabus of its regulatory agency-National Universities Commission.” he said.

    Further, he said the MoU would also improve dissemination of accounting knowledge to students  to improve their accounting experience.

    He added that it contains 16 subjects broken down into three levels namely: Foundation, Skilled and Professional levels.

    “The syllabus covers a wide range of knowledge which an accountant is likely to encounter in the accounting world and it has a global accounting qualification.”

    With the MoU, Zakari is optimistic that Caleb University now ranks as one of the best for training accountants.

    The institution’s Vice Chancellor Prof Daniel Ayandiji, said Caleb University has embarked on deliberate path in building strong academic team by employing best brains in the industry, such as immediate past president of Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Prof  Teju Somorin and former Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria president, Prof Joseph Ajibola.

    Aina promised that Caleb University would fulfill its part of the bargain, adding that the institution trains its students both academically and professionally.

    Caleb produces 15 First-Class

    Fifteen First-Class graduates of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos, will lead 340 others at the university’s sixth convocation on Friday.

    Vice Chancellor Prof Ayandiji Daniel Aina said this while speaking with reporters at the pre-convocation briefing at the weekend.

    Despite the recession, Ayandiji said management would not increase tuition. The move, he said, is to secure the future through education and enlightenment.

    “Our graduates are distinguished, therefore, they will always stand out. They are not backed up so they will deliver.

    “Presently, we do not owe any worker salary or allowance and we have not increased our fees either and we do not intend to do that so that the future of Nigeria will not be truncated,” he added.

    The school started operation on January 21, 2008.

  • Caleb Varsity, gets VC

    A Professor of Political Science and Public Communication, Ayandiji Daniel Aina, has been appointed the third Vice-Chancellor of Caleb University, Lagos.

    Before his career as an academic, Aina was for 10 years at the (old) Daily Times of Nigeria Plc where he rose to the post of Assistant Director (1989-1999) according to a statement by the Registrar of the University, Mrs. Folake Okor.

    Prior to his appointment Aina was the Provost, College of Management and Social Sciences, Babcock University.

    Aina takes over from Prof Ayodeji Olukoju, a professor of History from the University of Lagos.

    Aina, who is not new to university administration, has served as the President/Vice-Chancellor of Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State (2011-2013).

    He was the pioneer Head of Department of Political Science (1999-2003), Dean, Faculty of Management and Social Sciences (2003-2006) and Chief of Staff to the Vice-Chancellor (2006-2008) at Babcock University.

    ICAN okays Caleb varsity’s accounting programme

    Caleb University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Olukoju has said the re-accreditation of the institution’s Accounting programme by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has further validated the university’s claim of academic excellence.

    He said the programme’s re-accreditation, which is domiciled in the Department of Accounting and Finance, Faculty of College of Social and Management Sciences, has gone a long way to boost the confidence  stakeholders have in the institution.

    “We can go extra miles to comply with the rules and regulations guiding accreditation of our academic programmes.  We are giving parents the best quality and we will not stop at anything to make our students compete favourably with their peers anywhere and succeed in their academic endeavours,” he said.

    He attributed the giant stride attained by the university to the support of the founder, Dr. Oladega Adebogun, the lecturers and students.

    The ICAN Accreditation Certificate was presented to the Dean, College of Social and Management Sciences (COSOMAS), Prof. Nosa Owens-Ibie by the ICAN President, Mr. Chidi Onyeukwu Ajaegbu at the ICAN Office Annex, Ebute Metta, Lagos.

    With the re-accreditation, which is for another five years, Owens-Ibie said accounting students will be exempted from writing some stages of ICAN examinations.

    He added that ICAN has agreed to offer automatic scholarship to First Class students of the Department for further education.

    He said the feat achieved by one of its students in who became a chartered accountant in 300-Level, and the selection of another to join 11 others from various universities to participate in the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria contest, showed that the university is doing well.

    “Caleb University is the only private university selected for the contest and Esther Eniayewu is to represent the institution,” he said.

    Given the facilities put in place by the university to enhance quality training of the students, the Acting Head of Department of Accounting and Finance, Mr. Michael Nwidobe, said the department is concluding arrangements to begin postgraduate programmes in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).

    He said the department positions the students to acquire their educational and professional certificates at the same time before graduation.

    Nwidobe, who noted that the Department has an Accounting Laboratory with the latest accounting software, added that capacity development of workers is a top priority at the college.

    He said no fewer than eight members of the academic staff of the college are ICAN members.

  • Lagos partners Caleb varsity on scholarship

    The Lagos State Government is partnering Caleb University, Imota to offer scholarships to candidates of the state who wish to pursue undergraduate degree programmes in the institution.

    Acting Registrar of the university, Mrs. Folake Okor, noted in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mr Sesan Awobadejo, that there are three full scholarships and 50 half-tuition on offer for eligible candidates who apply.

    The statement noted that the scholarships would be awarded into programmes in any of the universities three colleges, namely: Environmental Sciences and Management, Pure and Applied sciences, and College of Social and Management Sciences.

    To apply for the scholarship, Mrs Okor said interested applicants who scored 180 and above in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), are required to obtain application forms from the board’s office in Iyana Ipaja or Caleb Schools, Magodo after paying N2, 000 application fee to a designated bank account.

     

  • Caleb College celebrates awards

    Caleb College, Magodo, Lagos State, is to roll out the drums to celebrate its achievement in the 2011 May/June West African Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

    One of its students, Adeola Oluwaseun Akeju,was the second highest achiever in the examination; the school was also named the second best private school in the state.

    Adeola Akeju scored A1 in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, Geography and Economics, while she had B2 in Physics and Yoruba Language.

    Speaking on Akeju’s feat, the Director, Dr Ola Adebogun, said the college competed favourably with notable schools in Lagos State to emerge the second best, adding that the college, like every other school, was assessed based on general performance by the students registered for the examination.

    Adebogun, however, expressed the management’s appreciation to parents for their support in driving the school’s vision ‘to raise Godly leaders who will achieve a consistent record of academic and moral excellence’. He promised that the college will sustain the standards attained by maintaining its facilities.

    Adebogun, who informed the parents and students that the college had also been nominated as one of the top six schools to be honoured by the Lagos State government and Ministry of Education, congratulated Akeju for making the Caleb family proud, and the staff and students for being outstanding ambassadors.

    In a related development, the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Lagos State chapter, has honoured Akeju and Caleb College for being the second best student and second best school in the 2011 May/June WASSCE. The awards were presented to Akeju and the school during the 2011 conference of the society, held at the Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, on October 10.
