Many dead as plane crashes into California neighbourhood

Several people are feared dead after a small plane crashed into a California neighborhood before dawn yesterday, destroying homes and setting cars on fire.

At least 10 houses were burned or hit by debris that spread over a wide area, and cars on both sides of a street went up in flames when the Cessna 550 slammed into the ground in San Diego.

“There are more than one fatality that we found so far, but we’re waiting to get the registered numbers that were on the plane itself,” said San Diego’s Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy.

“When it hit the street, as the jet fuel went down, it took out every single car that was on both sides of the street,” he said, adding: “We have jet fuel all over the place.”

One resident told the local Fox affiliate he had fled his home in a hurry.

“I looked out the window and there was just flames everywhere,” said the man, who did not give his name.

“Then we heard the chain reaction of boom, boom, boom. And I’m like: ‘Whoa’.”

Footage of the immediate aftermath of the crash showed a line of burning fuel linking the flaming cars.

Eddy said “miraculously” no one on the ground had been killed or seriously hurt.

Daylight revealed what a close call it had been for some people, with images showing the roof of one home blackened and collapsing.

Vehicles were twisted and charred, and several trees were burned. The smell of fuel hung in the air hours after the crash as authorities combed the area for clues.

The accident happened in thick fog when the plane, which had come from Kansas, was nearing the Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.

The plane, which can carry up to eight people, went down around 3:45 am (1145 GMT), according to the Federal Aviation Administration, striking the Murphy Canyon neighborhood.

The residential area it hit is largely military housing. San Diego is home to US Navy facilities, Marine Corps bases and Coast Guard stations.

Zane Baker, a high school senior who lives in the area, said police officers had gone door-to-door getting people out of their homes.

The accident came at a time of heightened tension in the skies above America, with a number of incidents rocking public confidence in flying.

Air traffic control outages have struck the busy Newark airport on the East Coast at least twice in recent weeks, and in January there was a mid-air collision over Washington between a passenger plane and a military helicopter.

This month, two people who were onboard a small plane died when it crashed into a residential neighborhood northwest of Los Angeles.

    Nigerian joins California governorship race

Nigerian-born American, Dr. Akinyemi Agbede has announced his intention to contest the forthcoming California governorship election next year.

His decision to join the governorship race has elicited excitement from his friends and political associates.

The renowned mathematician is not new to California politics as he had previously run for the position of senator and the governor.

He attempted the position of governor in 2014 and 2018 and also took a shot at the US Senate in 2016 and 2022.

According to him, the recent exploits of Kemi Badenoch who recently emerged as the Labour Party leader in the United Kingdom means he stands a good chance of replicating the same feat by emerging governor of California.

In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, Agbede said: “My relentless pursuit of the exalted position of governor in California is borne out of my commitment to serve the diverse communities of California.

“The campaign is expected to focus on educational reform, economic development, and social justice—these are issues that resonate deeply with voters across the state” he hinted recently.

He said: “In an era where diversity and representation are paramount, Dr. Agbede’s candidacy not only highlights the potential of Nigerian Americans in politics but also underscores the importance of inclusive leadership in shaping America’s future.

“As he embarks on this new chapter, many are watching closely to see if he can indeed break records and redefine what is possible for candidates from diverse backgrounds in the United States.

“With a growing network of supporters and a clear vision for California’s future, Dr. Akinyemi Agbede is set to become a formidable contender in the race for governor.”

Terminator star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has undergone emergency open-heart surgery, according to US reports.

The 70-year-old underwent the medical procedure on Thursday, according to TMZ.

Schwarzenegger was scheduled to have a catheter valve replacement and developed complications, US reports say.

The procedure usually means the patient can avoid having open-heart surgery.

Doctors at Cedars-Sinai hospital in LA reportedly decided an emergency open-heart operation was needed and Schwarzenegger was in theatre for several hours.

The former governor of California is believed to be in a stable condition.

Serena enjoys winning return at Indian Wells

Serena Williams conceded she had been rusty on her return to professional tennis after more than a year away from the game.

She did enough to secure a 7-5 6-3 win over Zarina Diyas in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday.

Williams, who had not played a singles match since winning the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant, chalked up 27 unforced errors with 34 winners.

This helped her to defeat her 53rd-ranked opponent in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd in California.

“It was incredible. It’s been over a year and a kid later. I get to go home to her now and I’m excited about that,” Williams said.

“It definitely wasn’t easy but it was good. I’m a little rusty but it doesn’t matter. I’m just out here on this journey doing the best I can.”

Williams was only two points from dropping the opening set but showed the sort of poise that has earned her 23 Grand Slam singles titles.

After taking a deep breath, she unleashed a second serve that kicked up viciously, forcing Kazakh Diyas to reach high for her return, unable to get it back into play.

Holding serve to level at 5-5, Williams broke in the next game, letting out a scream and clenching her left fist as Diyas netted.

The second set was a fairly even contest, with Williams again coming through on most of the big points.

The 36-year-old gave birth to daughter Alexis Olympia on Sept. 1, but says post-childbirth health complications that included blood clots in her lungs were almost fatal.

She is now healthy again, but skipped this year’s Australian Open because she did not consider herself tournament-ready.

Williams is unseeded at Indian Wells, which is why she had to play the first round while the seeds, including Sister Venus, enjoyed a bye.

The Williams sisters could meet in the third round.

Serena plays Dutch 29th seed Kiki Bertens in the second round, while Venus takes on Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka also made a winning comeback after eight months out of action, beating Britain’s Heather Watson 6-4 6-2.

She last played at Wimbledon in July before the legal battle over the custody of her son kept Azarenka off the court for the rest of the season.

The two-time Grand Slam winner also withdrew from the Australian Open in January.

A commanding display in the first set saw Azarenka race to a 5-1 lead but Watson fought back to make it 5-4 before the Belarusian regained control to clinch the set.

The second set was more competitive with Azarenka taking a 4-2 lead before being pushed in a 12-deuce game between the duo.

But the 28-year-old held on to make it 5-2 and charge to victory.

“It was tough, especially in moments that I have been out of the game…,” the two-time champion said after the match.

“It’s a pretty good start. I had my heart out playing here and that’s the most important.”

Azarenka has now won all six of her matches against Watson and will play U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens in the next round.

  • Facebook’s F8 conference showcases African Developers

Facebook’s F8 conference showcases African Developers

African developers shared the stage with developers from Facebook and other parts of the world at the F8 developers’ conference held in San Jose, California, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The developers showcased their innovative products and services created for their local communities and the global market.

Mr Emeka Afigbo, Facebook’s Head of Platform Partnerships for the Middle East and Africa, said that the organisation’s partnership with developers was for global benefit.

“We’re partnering with many African developers to launch products that not only meet the needs of their local markets, but which are also ready for the world stage.

“Events like F8 are a perfect opportunity for us to talk about how we will work with partners to do more with our platforms.

“This is a forum for us to get feedback from our ecosystem and to showcase our partners’ work to the world,” Afigbo said.

F8 hosts more than 4,000 people in person and hundreds of thousands of people watching via Facebook Live for two days of new products, tools, interactive demos and speakers to help developers build, grow and monetise their apps.

This year, Facebook brought F8 to developers around the world through F8 Meet-ups hosted with tech hubs around the world.

In Africa, it hosted F8 Meet-ups in Nairobi, Lagos, and Cape Town, where participants watched live streams of the sessions in San Francisco.

NAN reports that the Facebook’s F8 is a mostly-annual conference it hosts for developers and entrepreneurs who build products and services around the website.

Facebook had often introduced new features and made new announcements at the conference.

The “F8” name came from Facebook’s tradition of 8 hour hackathons

A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest or codefest) is a design sprint-like event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development collaborate intensively on software projects.

The programmers and other developers include interface designers project managers and others, often including subject matter experts.

Hackathons typically last between a day and a week; some hackathons are intended simply for educational or social purposes, although in many cases the goal is to create usable software.

The scheduling of F8 has been somewhat erratic; no conference was held in 2009, 2012 or 2013, and the date for the 2011 conference was announced late.

  • Facebook developing keyboardless typing directly from human brain

Facebook developing keyboardless typing directly from human brain

Facebook is working to create a data input method that doesn’t rely on a keyboard, but instead allows the user to type directly from the brain, the company said at its two-day developers conference in San Jose, California.

“In a few years’  time we expect to demonstrate a real-time silent speech system capable of delivering 100 words per minute,” or about five-times faster than a person can type with a Smartphone, said vice president of engineering Regina Dugan on the second day of the conference.

Dugan also heads Facebook’s hardware research unit known as Building eight, which has more than 60 scientists and engineers working on the new keyboardless typing method.

The input method could, for example, allow users to send a text message or email to a friend without taking out a Smartphone to type.

Dugan also tried to calm consumers at the conference, saying the California-based social media giant isn’t interested in detecting a person’s thoughts, but only what the person intends to type.

“We’re not talking about decoding your random thoughts. That might be more than any of us care to know,” she said.

Dugan referred to research at Stanford University, which has allowed a paralysed woman to type at about eight words per minute directly from her brain.

But the current method requires invasive surgery in which an array of electrodes is implanted to receive data where the brain would normally control the person’s motor functions.

“That simply won’t scale,” Dugan said, referring the surgery process.

“So we’ll need new non-invasive sensors.”

Facebook is considering wearables such as caps that can read data through the human skull.

While the company may need years to produce a mass-scale device, any advances in the research have potential to be a huge breakthrough in human communications, Dugan said.

“Even something as simple as a yes-no brain click would fundamentally change our capability.”

  • California announces proposal to exit U.S.

California has announced a proposal, called “Calexit” that would establish it as a separate nation from the U.S., officials have said.

The proposal for California to secede from the U.S. was submitted to the Secretary of State’s Office on Thursday, according to a report.

The proposed “Calexit” initiative was a name borrowed from the UK’s “Brexit” departure from the EU.

“Calexit” would ask voters to repeal part of the state constitution that declares California an inseparable part of the U.S.

A recent poll found that one in three California residents would support a possible secession from the U.S. due to their opposition to President Donald Trump, according to the proposal.

No mention has been made of the president in the proposal.

If the proposal qualifies for the ballot and is approved by voters, it could be a step to a future vote on whether the state would break away from the rest of the nation.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla said the group behind the proposal, ‘Yes California Independence Campaign’, was cleared to begin attempting to collect nearly 600,000 voter signatures needed to place the plan on the ballot.

“In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values.

“And our continued statehood means California will continue subsidising the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children,” the Yes California Independence Campaign’s website says. (NAN)

‘Clinton should go to jail’ over private email server- Trump

U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump says his likely opponent, Mrs Hillary Clinton, should be imprisoned for using a private email server during her term as secretary of state.

“I will say this, Hillary Clinton has got to go to jail,” Trump said at a campaign stop in San Jose, California.

“Folks, honestly, she’s guilty as hell,” Trump added, saying if he is elected president he will direct his attorney general to investigate Clinton over her use of the private server.

Earlier Thursday, Clinton gave a foreign policy speech in which she said Trump was “temperamentally unfit” to be president.

She said that it would be dangerous to entrust him with the country’s nuclear codes.
