  • Osun school calisthenics:  Road to grand finale

By November 27, 2018, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s second term tenure will end as the Governor of Osun State .  One of the things his era will be remembered for is the re-introduction of Calisthenics. During school anniversaries, inter house sports, government official visits   to schools, it is now an easy exercise for school children to entertain their guests.

In major national and state anniversaries, such as Independence, State Creation and Children’s Day, Calisthenics display is the only event that often attracts spectators to the state city stadium.

It is among the leading ceremonies listed to usher in the Osun Governor-elect, Alhaji Gboyega Isiaka Oyetola, who will be inaugurated on November 27as the governor of the state.

Calisthenics was introduced by the Old Oyo State Governor, Chief Bola Ige in 1980/81. Aregbesola, in 2011, engaged two Calisthenics experts from Cuba to train 40 Physical and Health Education Instructors and Games Masters in Osun.

The training experience culminated in a display of “Osun at 21” Anniversary Celebration, August 27, 2012; the first ever major Calisthenics Display in the state with only a Nigerian precedence in the one put up by the Late Bola Ige, at the Liberty Stadium in the Old Oyo State during the 2nd Republic.

In the last six years, however, five other major calisthenics displays during various Anniversaries, and some other indoors displays, have taken place without the Cubans, under the tutorship of those they trained, including the spectacular Oodua World Children’s Day Celebration in 2013 graced by Late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuade and the incumbent Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi along with Obas from Oduduwa lineage; and this year’s Children Day Celebration. Over 20,000 students from Middle and High Schools in more than 30 schools from Osogbo and Olorunda Local Government Areas have passed through the training exercises, which lasts up to 90 days in some instances.

In 2017, there was a new dimension with the introduction of the State-wide School Competition that allowed entry from all public schools in Osun. At this level, more than 40 schools across the state formed themselves into nine teams, training for two school terms, with elimination displays and Senatorial Stage championship and Prizes. The Grand Finale took place in November 2017 between teams representing the three Senatorial Districts as a part of activities to celebrate 3rd Year Anniversary of the Second Tenure of Rauf Aregbesola Government: over 5,000 students were involved. Apart from trophies, plaques and certificates of participation, N10,500,000 prize money was awarded by the state government for the sports facilities development of the participating schools.

By the 2018 state-wide competition, Aregbesola directed that private schools be allowed to participate. Of the 27 schools that registered, only 14 could make it to the elimination stage. After the assessment of their display performances between Monday 22 and 29 October, 2018. Glory Group of Schools, Okuku, a private school in Odo-Otin Local Government Area; St. Raphael College, Ikire, also a private school, and St. Micheal RCM, Ibokun, a public school came best three schools. They got N1 million and a trophy each while the first runners up, L.A. Middle School, Ilesha, Nahada Group of Schools Inisa and  Ife-Oluwa Middle School Osogbo got N750,000 each. The second runners up category, Osu Community Middle School, Osu, Olive Branches Schools, Osogbo, and Anglican Central Government Middle School. Ile-Ife got N500,000 each.

Other five schools in the last category; Anglican Middle/High School Ife Odan, Oba Laoye and Anasru-Islam Middle School, Ede, Oluorogbo Middle School, Ile-Ife, Shekinah Schools, Inisa and Osun North Anglican Diocesan Comprehensive High School, Agbeye got the consolation prize of N200,000 each.

This 2018 edition of the school competition will be concluded with a grand finale on November 21,  as part of the programmes of the inauguration of the  Oyetola administration. The champion will go home with a giant trophy and N2 Million, the runner-up with N1m and the third placed team will go away with N750,000.

Director, Department of Social Mobilisation and Grassroots Mobilisation and Guidance in the Office of the Governor,  Bayo Ojo, said the prize reward is among others, to encourage more participation and assist the schools in improving their sporting facilities in the quest of the government to institutionalise Calisthenics as part of school curricular, noting that playgrounds these days have become scarce resources in schools, especially private schools, a road block to the psychomotor domains objectives of education in Nigeria.

He said 27 schools indicated interest in the competition but 14 eventually made it past the preliminary training into the competition stage, leading to the emergence of the three finalists.

He said this year edition accommodated private schools to participate in the competitions, which has expanded the scope of the programme and solicited for the support of the private sector to sustain the programme describing it as worthy in building a better future for Nigeria.

Commissioner for Education, Omotunde Young, praised Governor Rauf Aregbesola for the initiative, adding that it requires unusual understanding and strong leadership to sustain a programme like calisthenics considering its huge cost and solicited for private sector intervention, especially considering that Calisthenics is one of the best brand-able sports for children.

According to him, in 2017 alone, over 6,000 students were engaged which has transformed their lives through discipline, mental alertness, precision, team work among other Omoluabi virtues acquired through the calisthenics game.

Whenever the government desires to stage calisthenics specifically for anniversaries, about 5,000 students are gathered as a “state team” from dozen contiguous schools in Osogbo and Olorunda Local Government Areas, with the government being responsible for their training, costume and welfare. In order to take the burden of refreshment and transport to the training ground away from their parents, N300 daily is given to each participant for upwards of 90 training days. Although the total monetary commitment, including the cost of costume for 5,000 persons, is huge, it is a direct investment into 5,000 families, apart from the beauty and benefits of Calisthenics. These are among several such social interventions and protection programmes are what have impacted on State of Osun to lower its crime and poverty levels to one of the very lowest in Nigeria.

“However,” explains Mr Omotunde-Young “with the new template of Statewide school competition, the schools, parents and the Parents-Teachers associations, are directly responsible, voluntarily, for the welfare and costumes of each of their teams. The State Training Crew trains the Physical Education Instructors and games masters of those schools.  This way, schools, private and public, has taken ownership and control of the process with government continually guiding and supporting the process with training knowhow, competition staging and prizes, while expecting brand and private sector support in the nearest future.”

The Head of Service, Olowogboyega, said in the history of the state, no governor understands the philosophy of sound and qualitative education like Governor Rauf Aregbesola who has demonstrated unprecedented commitment to educational development.

He said physical education is foundation of education and any society that lacks such is heading for doom and urged the teachers to sustain the institutionalisation of calisthenics in schools.

He said it is only Aregbesola that understands governance best among all the governors that have administered the state and the school curricular designed by his administration are the best in the country.

Olowogboyega commended the teachers for the recent strides in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) with 70 percent performance in English and Mathematics.

He said: “Aregbesola has brought the riddles of impossibility through calisthenics and it is the teachers that will solve this problem; your commitment and determination are important for the success of the programme.”

  • Osun introduces calisthenics in public schools

The government of Osun State has announced that it will institutionalise calisthenics in all public schools as extra-curricular activities as part of the education interventions of Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

While addressing journalists at a training workshop for coaches who are teachers in secondary schools in Osogbo, the state capital, Director, Department of Social, Grassroots Mobilisation and Guidance, Office of the Governor, Comrade Bayo Ojo said calisthenics in public schools has assisted in decimating social menace among students.

The workshop had in attendance, Permanent Sectary, Ministry of Education, Mr Festus Olaide, Permanent Secretary, Local Government Loans Board Dr Oyeboade Olowogboyega and selected coaches from the nine federal constituencies.

He said calisthenics has instilled discipline among the 22, 000 students drawn from 50 schools in the two local governments, Osogbo and Olorunda that have been participating in the programme since 2012.

According to him, spreading the benefit of calisthenics on volunteer basis is, among others, to encourage school children to be physically strong, mentally sound, skilful, knowledgeable and socially oriented.

Ojo said: “Calisthenics is an exercise that consists of varieties of rhythmic movements with different formations and compositions. Every participant is important to the success of the display which involved competence in coordination and management of complex situations.

“Worthwhile training in the process is unity of purpose that compels participants to work towards a single objective, co-operation and team work that allows the participants learn to work in concert, realising that each must play his or her own part well in time, as each part, big or small, is equally important in attaining the set goals.”

He explained that organisation, discipline and collective responsibilities involved in calisthenics are core values missing in Nigeria that has derailed the desired development of the country, arguing that if the young generation imbibed such values, Nigeria can be sure of a better future.

To bring the game down to the grassroots, the state government is introducing selected schools as training centres in the nine federal constituencies and allows schools to take ownership of the programme as extra-curricular activities.

Students from the public and interested private schools will constitute the calisthenics team of between 1,000 and 1,500 students that will participate in the state-wide competition that has trophy and financial rewards for the winners.

  • Lagos partners Osun on calisthenics training

The Lagos State Government on Monday said its training of students and youths on fundamentals of calisthenics was being done in partnership with the Osun State government.

Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule spoke on the partnership while receiving a six-man delegation from Osun in her office at Alausa.

Adebule said the training in calisthenics would help in developing the students mentally, physically and socially.

Calisthenics consists of a variety of movements often performed rhythmical and usually conducted in concerts with stretches to depict specific symbols.

The calisthenics training is in preparation of the ‘Lagos @ 50’ celebrations coming up in May.

Adebule said the calisthenics display of students at the 25th anniversary of the creation of the State of Osun in Aug. 2016 spurred Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode into the partnership.

“Governor Ambode was impressed by the breathtaking calisthenics performances at the Osogbo City Stadium and has decided to replicate same in Lagos State.

“We are partnering with Osun State to share ideas and learn from them to ensure a historic performance at the Lagos @50 celebration and beyond.

“One of the components of calisthenics is to give meaning to the total package of educational training for young minds.

“We are starting this training with our students and we will extend it to the youth in the state,” Adebule said.

Mr Adebayo Ojo, Director, Department for Social and Grassroots Mobilisation and Guidance, Office of the Governor, Osun, who led the visiting team, said the school calisthenics programme had been a success in Osun State.

He said the calisthenics programme was conceived to enhance the emergence of a new generation of students who were physically fit, mentally sound and socially responsible individuals that would be well-adjusted to societal needs.

“Osun State is the first in the country to revive this sterling and rewarding initiative in about more than three decades.

“We shall do our best to ensure that we bring out the best in the students who will be trained to produce Eko-Calisthenics that will be of global standard,” he said.

  • Osun at 25 promises spectacular calisthenics display

Osun at 25 promises spectacular calisthenics display

Celebration of compositions, colours, designs and formations to stun! No form of human activity appears to have been formed to arrest, entertain and motivate better than calisthenics. That is what the skyline of Osun, South-West Nigeria promises to be resplendent with as the State of Virtuous marks its 25th anniversary on Saturday 27th, August 2016.

Calisthenics is a body of exercises consisting of a variety of gross motor movements; often rhythmical and generally without equipment or apparatus. They are, essentially, body-weight training tactics.

Wikipedia explains that the word calisthenics has its roots in Greek words kálos, which means “beauty”, and sthénos, meaning “strength.”

Thus, calisthenics is the art of using one’s body weight and qualities of a body’s motion as a means to develop one’s physique as well as an art of aesthetic display.

There are numerous types of this body building exercise which include: lunges, jumping Jacks (star jumps or stride jumps), squat -jumps, sit -ups, crunches, pushups, pull-ups, dips, leg raises, hyperextensions, planks and so on.

Sports teams and military units often perform leader-directed group calisthenics as a form of synchronized physical training (often including a customized call and response routine to increase group cohesion and discipline.

Calisthenics is also popular as a component of physical education in primary and secondary schools across the world.

Either at its most elementary or at the advanced level, calisthenics’ primary motif always resonates whenever it is performed.

To say that it brings out beauty is to say the obvious. Wherever there is calisthenics display, the atmosphere turns into beautiful scenery with competing colours and designs..

It is this component of calisthenics that has been given meaning in Osun under the Government of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as part of the total package of educational training for young minds.

This kind of extra-curricular development was last exhibited in the Second Republic in the old Oyo State under late Chief Bola Ige as the Governor.

The State of Osun is the first in the country to revive this sterling and rewarding initiative in about more than three decades.

The scheme seeks to instill the spirit of collaborative efforts and discipline in school children. This is by combining extra-curricular activities with academic pursuit, thus building their minds and bodies and preparing them for the future.

Besides, calisthenics trainings  are also intended to increase body strength, body fitness, and flexibility of the pupils through movements such as pulling or pushing oneself up, bending, jumping, or swinging, using only one’s body weight for resistance; usually conducted in concert with stretches.

Again, proper calisthenics training will promote the growth of lean muscle mass, and increase the strength, mobility, flexibility, agility, and endurance.

Proper strength training via weight lifting routine will promote the growth of muscle mass and strength.

When performed vigorously and with variety, calisthenics can provide the benefits of muscular and aerobic conditioning, in addition to improving psycho-motor skills such as balance, agility and coordination.

It also teaches the pupils the spirit of cooperation, discipline, organization, concentration and togetherness as they perform as a group thereby working in their minds as one.

In addition to general fitness, calisthenics exercises are often used as baseline physical evaluations to test  physical fitness. In other words, pupils who undergo calisthenics training will have sound minds in healthy bodies. Participants become good samples in precision, unity of purpose, social networking and above all, discipline.

This programme was conceived to enhance the emergence of a new generation of students who are physically fit, mentally sound and socially responsible and well-adjusted to the need of the society.

The programme has been so entrenched in the body system of the pupils that it has become a routine exercise and they have, on few occasions, displayed the stuffs they are made of.

On the two previous occasions the state had put up the show, the pupils had dished out breathtaking calisthenics performances at the Osogbo City Stadium.

As Governor Aregbesola would say, “Education has three aspects: the affective, cognitive a psycho-motor. It is this last aspect – the psycho-motor – that had been neglected before our government. Education is meant to be total. As we develop their cognitive and effective senses, so also we must develop their body fitness in order to have a sound mind in a healthy body.”

In the fullness of time, the child being raised in Osun today must turn out to be a model of good character, innovation and competence; the true Omoluabi to the state’s tomorrow.

On a third outing in the state, the 25th anniversary of the creation of the State of Osun awaits another spectacle of performance as colour, arrangement, cooperation, concentration, focus are all to be on display in what promises to be another historic performance in Osun.
