  • Aspirant calls for unity in Ekiti APC

Ekiti State All Progressives Congress(APC) governorship aspirant Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele has called for unity in the chapter as it prepares for the primary.

He said crises may be an obstacle to victory at the poll.

Bamidele said the desire of the APC family is to reclaim power from the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Ekiti State, warning agents of division to desist from their activities.

The aspirant lamented that some aspirants’ loyalists and members of the party have been deploying the social media and the existing APC platforms to discredit one another.

The former federal lawmaker said  members would still have to come together after the primary to work for the victory of the party, adding that no individual can win the election independently of other chieftains.

Bamidele, who spoke at his Iyin-Ekiti country home at the weekend,  exuded confidence that the party  will, win if members allow civility to reign in their ranks.

He said: “In 2015, the APC as an underdog won the presidential poll. Though, President Muhammadu Buhari’s electrifying popularity and irresistible personality played a major role in the historical victory, but the unity among members all over the 36 states of the federation also helped in no small measure.

“This is the same situation the APC is in Ekiti. We are in opposition and we need cohesiveness to be able to wrest power from the PDP.

“Making incendiary and derisive comments about ourselves when we are supposed to see the PDP as a common political foe we must defeat will take us nowhere in this election.

“I have heard some members making insinuations that I had conceded to deputy governorship ticket with Engr Segun Oni. Some said I had a secret pact with Dr. Kayode Fayemi. The latest news has been that I have decided to renounce my ambition to boost Senator Babafemi Ojudu’s aspiration.

Bamidele added: “I have heard some aspirants branding others as unmarketable, I have heard some describing some notable members and even a national officer as an outsider in APC.

“All these sinister and deleterious political moves might impede our desire to take over Ekiti, except we begin to see ourselves as one and the time to do that is now”, Bamidele advised.

Bamidele urged the deputy chairman of the party, Chief Kemi Olaleye, to check the excesses of members who have turned themselves into online monsters, thereby destroying the unity of the party.

He said the party can curb their activities by invoking sanctions.

Bamidele stressed: “I support that those who maintain hard stand after being cautioned by the party’s top hierarchy should be sanctioned.

“APC is a party guided by constitution and it shouldn’t trivialize issue that could disunite members, particularly at a time we are approaching a critical election like this.

“Ekiti and Osun governorship elections are strategic to our party. They will determine so many things in our party and it will help in sending a  signal that APC is still very strong, acceptable and remains a movement in the country’s political hemisphere.”

  • PMB: Respond to calls for restructuring

The call for the restructuring of the Nigerian federation is being raised from most directions across Nigeria. Very many informed men and women with strong desires for the success and prosperity of Nigeria, former high public officials of Nigeria’s federal and state governments, other people with the most exalted experiences in the governance and management of Nigeria, some of Nigeria’s most respected intellectuals, professionals and businessmen, and countless civic organizations and youth organizations –all are raising their voices and calling for the restructuring of this federation, out of love for this country. All are warning that if the restructuring of this federation continues to be delayed, Nigeria could soon break up.

Even the most radical among the youths of our country, the ones who have gone so far as to demand secession for their ethnic nations out of Nigeria, and even the ones who are engaging in blood-cuddling destruction of assets in their part of Nigeria in order to enforce their demands, all nevertheless indicate from time to time that they still have room for compromise and settlement if the Nigerian federation were restructured.

The call for restructuring never ceases coming these days. And the warning that Nigeria could soon break up if restructuring continues to be delayed never ceases to come these days too. The chance to save Nigeria still exists. But the probability that Nigeria could implode and break up is mounting fearfully.

And most developments and emerging realities are adding to the awful probability that Nigeria could soon disintegrate. The weakness of the economy is accelerating almost out of hand. Even the national chairman of the ruling party has now told Nigeria that his party is baffled by the depth to which Nigeria’s economy has fallen. Some months ago, there was sudden news that America and India had stepped up to resume buying Nigeria’s oil, thereby saving Nigeria from the crushing circumstance that the world was no longer buying our oil. But now, a reverse news has come that both America and India are again reducing purchases of Nigeria’s oil; that Nigeria is offering deep discounts in order to attract buyers and that buyers are not forthcoming. And, meanwhile, the source of the oil is sinking into deeper and deeper trouble as various Delta militant groups continue to destroy oil platforms and pipelines, and as the major oil-mining companies are forced to relocate their activities and investments to other oil producing countries – especially to Angola. Even if the Nigerian army does invade and overrun the Delta, the military victory is distinctly unlikely to produce a quick revival of the oil industry there, as a full scale war there would certainly result in greater damages to oil producing assets.

Meanwhile, the attitudes of the international community are tilting against Nigeria. After Buhari was sworn in, and especially when he embarked on war against corruption, the international community felt warm towards him and Nigeria. I was in America when he paid his first visit as president to that country and addressed a gathering of Nigerians in Washington DC. We Nigerians felt good as our president was received with a surge of warmth and optimism by the American ruling class, business class, the media, and the general public. After all the gloom and doom of the last years of the Jonathan presidency, Buhari seemed to be inaugurating a new era of light, hope and growth. As a Nigerian elder resident abroad, I wrote a very optimistic article for this column in those days.

But most of that optimism and hope has now dissipated, thanks largely to Buhari’s show of lack of understanding of the economy, thanks to his perceptible ineptitude in managing anything (including even his war against corruption), thanks to his tendency towards excessive loyalty and submissiveness to the ethnic and religious wishes and desires of his Hausa-Fulani nationality, thanks to his obvious disrespect for the party that got him into power and for political parties in general, thanks to his apparent spite for democracy – and his obvious spite for the voices of his countrymen. Informed voices in the international community are now more and more talking about fears of inevitable collapse of the Nigerian economy, of mounting poor human rights record, of lack of respect for the lives and rights of citizens, of likely mass reactions to economic distress, and of possible national collapse. Altogether, the Buhari presidency is putting Nigeria into a dark corner – a dark corner where Nigeria would steadily lose goodwill worldwide, where Nigeria would steadily lose the inflow of investment capital, and where Nigeria would find it extremely difficult to get help and support if the feared big trouble were to come.

President Buhari needs to stop now, take a good look into and around him, seriously consider what Nigerians and foreigners are saying about his presidency and about his country, and begin seriously and resolutely to chart a different path for his presidency. As things stand today, people talking seriously and people joking on the worldwide social media are already wondering whether this man would be the last president of Nigeria, the president who would preside over the dissolution of Nigeria. That fate does not have to befall him or Nigeria. If he so chooses now, he can turn around and yet fulfil the best promises of the beginning of his presidency.

One step that would very powerfully inaugurate the turn-around would be a new and serious attention for the demands for a restructuring of the Nigerian federation. That is where the true battle for the future of Nigeria now lies. The deciding battle no longer lies in the hands of a powerful military. Rulers tend to be blinded by their possession and control of military power. And President Buhari seems to reside most of his hope these days in the assurance that the Nigerian military can crush all dissidence, all revolts, and all attempts at secession. He is mounting troops in the South-south, South-east, and even South-west – in addition to those already in the North-east. What he does not seem to know is that crushing dissidence, revolts and attempts at secession today is no longer exactly equivalent to preserving Nigeria as one. This is not 1967-70. Nigerians have grown in knowledge and skills – especially in the awareness that they are not really weak in the world of today, and that even if they are vanquished by the army of the country to which they belong, they may still not lose their war for self-determination.

People belonging to Buhari’s class in Nigerian society and politics, and people belonging to other levels of society, are urging him to lead our country into a restructuring of our federation without further delay. They are warning that our country could soon break up if he continues to ignore their calls. Even from his Fulani nationality where the orthodox belief has been since 1960 that only an all-powerful  and all-controlling Federal Government can serve their interests and take care of their fears in Nigeria, some leading citizens are now conceding that concentrating all power in the centre has hurt all sections of Nigeria very disastrously, and that the only way to save Nigeria now is to review the making of the states of our federation, and give to the new states the power to promote their own socio-economic development and defeat poverty among their own people – and make their own kinds of contribution to the success of Nigeria.

Mr. President, the true need of any Nigerian people now is no longer about victory in establishing dominance over Nigeria. That has become grossly anachronistic. It has been blown away by the grinding power of poverty and the people’s determination to free themselves from poverty – poverty in the midst of plenty. You can only make yourself truly relevant by responding positively to the true need. Your destiny, Mr. President, your place in history, is in your own hands.

  • ‘Fresh calls for restructuring are baffling’

‘Fresh calls for restructuring are baffling’

CHIEF Frank Kokori, former Secretary General of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State. He spoke with Correspondent, Polycarp Orosevwotu on the Buhari administration, the economy, true federalism and the anti-corruption battle.

How would you assess President Muhammadu Buhari’s one year in office?

Buhari has done so well. I am saying this because he is operating from a very difficult situation as we all know. The country went through 16 years of massive corruption under the PDP administration, where there was no sense of decorum in the way they managed the country. Where all they do are based on money, to the extent that everything in this country is now being monetized, no social responsibility or sacrifice, all is money.

You can now see why we find ourselves in this kind of mess of PDP 16 years of misrule and corruption. And if you could recalled, for almost 12 years out of the 16 years of PDP government, oil price was hovering between 70 to 130 dollars per barrel. And we saw what happened recently when the oil price fell down below 30 dollars, so we are in real trouble, coupled with this social crisis that is happening in the Niger Delta with the so called Niger Delta Avengers that had emerged from nowhere bombing everywhere and destroying government facilities.

Critics of Buhari’s fight against corruption say it is lopsided. Do you agree?

Those petitions were sponsored ones and they were not substantiated. When you say a man is corrupt, one should be able to substantiate one’s position with facts. People saw that Amaechi was one of the committed and dedicated members of the APC party, who had made sacrifices, so how do we handle him, they decided to come out with framed petitions to rob him, but there were no evidence to show that the man was what they describe him.

Now, coming to the issue of UK allegations, l do not want to say anything but we should not also forget that some reports could be sponsored without a substantive evidence. PDP chieftains know themselves and all they have done to corrupt the country, so, they should not unnecessarily drag people into their misfortune to give them a bad name.

Do you think Buhari should named the looters?

No, the Buhari’s government is in the right track because he has to apply wisdom in all that he is doing. In a situation where one is recovering money from looters and the process of investigation still on, not closed, releasing the names of the looters will now amount to self defeat, so it was a wise decision taken by the federal government. Who will come out and say the Southsouth governors are not corrupt; they are the most corrupt governors in this country. If you see states like Kano, Bauchi and others are doing well with less allocation compare to the Southsouth governors that get high allocations and yet cannot account for it for the past 16 years, except Southsouth states like Cross Rivers and Edo that are also doing well.

Some people are of the view that Buhari govt is not addressing the economic problems, what’s your comment?

There is no doubt about it that people are suffering, but if you look you will see the government is playing his card for everybody to see. So, when I see critics saying Buhari is not doing anything, l feel bad because PDP has emptied the treasury, so they could have money to sponsor and publish what they do not see because somebody has been paid to do that.

When I see some of these handbill critics, I ask what did they do for 16 years when there was so much money in foreign exchange. You talk of excess crude account, and here was Jonathan few days ago, saying he was being deceived that his greatest mistake was to allow people to influence him to play on Nigerians people. Great country with a great leader, when they are passing through boom period, they must remember to save for a rainy day. So, let us give this man some time to put the country in the right path.

What is your take on the clamour for restructuring of the country?

You and l know it is impossible at this time because those who are making the call, where were they before now; when PDP and their brother Jonathan were in power. When Obasanjo was in power for eight years, he couldn’t call for conference because of his greed for third tenure, when it was a year to leave, he hurriedly call for National Conference and when he could not succeed, it ended abruptly.

The PDP is a self centered party. they had 16 years to restructure this country but they did not, and the man who entered for few months ago, you are telling him to restructure the country, I mean, is it not a shame, when intellects and elites talk about this thing. Then, look at the Niger-Delta region, who are the greatest victims of marginalization in this country. we have prayed and prayed that our son become the president, vice president for 2 ½ years, Acting President and President for six years, what did he do when everything was under his pocket, nothing.

The Nigeria President is so powerful; did he remember his people that are suffering and to create a true federalism for the people in the Southsouth? No. Jonathan came to power in a well-wind of good will. Even, when he was to be an acting president, the civil society took the battle against the northern cabals with other groups that you must make this man an acting president when the cabers were busy deceiving the country that Yar Adua was climbing the mountain. He became the acting president and finally he was elected the president; what did he do even when people cried to him on true federalism? It was after 18 months when his popularity had dropped from 100%  to almost 25%, that he hurriedly like Obasanjo, with less than 18 months to leave, that he wasted billions of naira organizing a Jamboree national conference but could not sponsor it through the national assembly.

In fact, are they serious when they ask Buhari to restructure the country? The Avengers from Niger Delta came from nowhere because they are being used by corrupt politicians to disturb the Federal government’s peace.

NIGERIA VS CONGO: Siasia calls Le Roy old school

Claude Le Roy’s Congo edged Ghana’s Black Meteors on penalties and Siasia suggests they will not be underrating their opponents.

The 67-year-old Frenchman has spent over a decade coaching African teams including Cameroon and Ghana.

” This is a new school Coach coming up against an old school coach, so we’re learning new tactics to see how to better them.

” We respect him, but its going to be 11 against 11 and I think it’ll come down to creating chances and taking them,” Siasia told www.footballlive.ng.

  • More calls to redeploy Cross River REC

Human rights activist and lawyer Mr Utum Eteng has added his voice to calls for the redeployment of the Cross Rivers State Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Sylvester Ezeani, for alleged partiality in the March 28 elections.

Ezeani came under attack from opposition parties immediately he assumed office. They accused him of being loyal to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), an allegation he denied.

Eteng spoke at the weekend in Calabar: “I am without equivocation an advocate of the request that the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Sylvester Ezeani, be redeployed.

“His first election conducted in the state is a sham, disgrace and failure to INEC. He poorly handled the March 28 elections. You will recall that before his coming, the forthright Mike Igini came to the state and set standards. “Igini created confidence in the people; he made people believe that their votes will count. When he was transferred many wept in the state. We knew another era of rigging had come. It is a shame that electoral officers in the state compromised. It was like that before Igini came and stopped it.

“He should be temporarily, if not permanently transferred, so they can bring somebody else to manage the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

“These elections are crucial because they touch the people directly. The people should not be shortchanged again.

“We appeal to the law enforcement agents to be independent and serve everybody, despite party affiliations”.

  • Firm calls for national database to fight insecurity

The Manager Director, Comfied Transnational Limited, Mr. Babatope Agbeyo, has called for a well-integrated national database in fighting criminality across Nigeria.

Agbeyo made this call at the Special Database Forum and Investiture Ceremony of the Institute of Data Processing Management of Nigeria (IDPM) held at Westtown Hotel, Lagos.

The theme of the ceremony, ‘Authentic and effective national databases, proficient tool to fight or combat challenges `in  a pluralistic nation’ featured a workshop, talks and awards to Commander, Search and Disposal Regiment, Nigerian Army, Col. A.A Salako; Dean, Faculty of Engineering, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Bolade Olaniyan; Lecturer at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Dr Tola Odule;  Founding Pastor of Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua, among others.

According to Agbeyo, in today’s information-centric society, reliable and effective dissemination of information play an important role in government sector as it helps provide a mechanism that ensures the integrity, authenticity and effectiveness of such data to help various kinds of unforeseen challenges.

Agbeyo noted that a database is a civilised way of keeping digitalised records about a place, thing or people who converge in a community and share a common language, culture, ethnicity, descent or history.

He opined that national database is a dynamic and intelligent data record system.

In his welcome address, the President of IDMP, Barrister Obiefule Ogbonna, called on federal and state governments to consider the inclusion of data processing and management as a subject into federal and state academic curricular and make it compulsory for students in secondary schools.

He said that a human being, irrespective of his or her calling or discipline, processes one data or another at all times, and defined data as the act of collecting and analysing facts to produce useful information that can be used instantly, secured or stored for future use, reference or retrieval when needed.

“We shall establish a standard professional, training online or e-learning and media centre for training of students and to provide professional service to the public and for special training of students on geographical information system,” said Agbeyo, while adding that IDPM shall initiate and complete the establishment of IDPM national Data Colleges for professional training and award of Chartered Data Manager.

  • NSC calls for calm

    NSC calls for calm

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has received the news of the suspension of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF by FIFA on the grounds of an alleged court order which the world football body has interpreted as government interference in the affairs of the football house.

The National Sports Commission wishes to state that the said court action brought against the NFF followed an internal crisis within the football family and has nothing to do with government.

While FIFA has stated that unless the court action is withdrawn, the suspension of the NFF will not be lifted, it is pertinent to state that neither the NSC nor government is involved in the court process.

However, the NSC wishes to state that the suspension of the NFF is a procedural practice by FIFA each time it feels that there is an alleged interference by government, be it the  Executive or Judiciary, in the affairs of its affiliate bodies.

It has, therefore, called on Nigerians to remain calm as efforts are being made to ensure that the suspension is lifted as soon as possible; as appropriate representation has been made to FIFA to present the true situation of the crisis within the football family.
