Cameroun face future AFCON ban over age fraud

Cameroon have suspended a player they took to the Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast earlier this year for allegedly falsifying his name and date of birth, which could see them face a future ban from the tournament.

The Cameroon federation FECAFOOT on Monday named Wilfried Nathan Douala among 62 players suspended from the league over administrative irregularities, mostly double identity and age cheating.

There was considerable surprise ahead of January’s Cup of Nations finals, where Cameroon went out in the second round, when coach Rigobert Song picked the 17-year-old Douala, an unheralded player from second division club Victoria United with no previous international experience.

There was also much comment on social media about whether he was really a teenager when pictures of the player first surfaced.

An investigation by the French daily Le Monde claimed Douala had previously played in the Cameroon league using the name Alexandre Bardelli and was over 21-years-old.

Le Monde said it had asked the Cameroon federation to explain the irregularity before they set off for the Ivory Coast but that FECAFOOT had declined to comment. Douala did not play at the Cup of Nations but was a registered squad member.

Tournament regulations say that if a fraud or a forgery has been committed, the national association concerned will be suspended from participation in the following two editions of the Cup of Nations.

For any administrative error in the registration of players, the national association concerned will be suspended from participation in the next edition, the rules add.

The Confederation of African Football has been contacted for comment.

  • 2019: Bishop Oyedepo predicts peace in Nigeria

Bishop David Oyedepo, the Founder and President Bishop, Living Faith Church Worldwide, on Saturday predicted that nothing would disturb the peace of Nigeria and its story would change for the better in the year 2019.

Oyedepo made the declaration at the just concluded annual prophetic gathering of the Winners’ family, christened the “Dominion”, in a satellite telecast of the church.

In the telecast monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the cleric also declared that 2019 would be a year of “I have Dominion”.

“Nothing will tamper with the peace of Nigeria; the story will change for the better in the name of Jesus.

“Nigeria shall not see bloodshed, the Prince of Peace will continue to dominate in Nigeria, in Africa and Nigeria is declared blessed.

“Anywhere you step, accident is forbidden; death will not come near you and our nation.

“Anything that is of grace in my life, I freely release upon you today.

“God has opened the year 2019 to us, celebrate Him because its our year of “I have Dominion,” he said.

The Bishop added that the year 2019 would be a year of humbling testimonies for Nigeria and pace-setting testimonies.

He further declared that 2019 would be a colourful year for the nation.

According to the cleric, as long as Jesus has the final say on the issues of Nigeria, it will experience greatness.

Oyedepo said that there would be no more cause of alarm in any area of the nation and its citizens.

He advised Christians in Nigeria to delight themselves in the spirit of servant-hood, adding that the spirit of Christ is the spirit of servant-hood.

“The Spirit of Christ is the spirit of servant-hood. As you keep rising on the ladder of leadership, you must retain our spirit of servant-hood, constantly

working to add value to others and be kingdom minded,” he said.

According to him, dedication is at the root of dominion, saying: “Sow yourself as a seed by being totally dedicated to God and His Kingdom’’.

He told his congregation that sacrificial giving guarantees the meeting of all their needs.

“When you engage in taking care of the well-being of others, God is also committed to your well-being,” he explained.

The cleric admonished Christians would engage in meeting the needs of the needy, every barrier on their path of destiny would be crushed.

“Nobody tampers with your life, your career, your family and goes away with it because you are promoted to God’s kingdom.

“God will stand for your defence in the day of trouble. Every sacrificial giver has a defence around him in the day of trouble always have that in mind,” he said.

He reminded his congregation that the Church is not a building; the Church is a people and the Redeemed of the Lord.

“The Church is the Body of Christ, the fullness of Him that fills all things.

“We understand that by redemption we have been repositioned far above all principalities and powers. We also recognise that the Spirit of Faith is the guarantee for the dominion of the Saints over all gang ups of hell,” he stressed.

Oyedepo told his congregation that Shiloh is not a church anniversary, but a place for taking delivery of all their hanging inheritance in Christ.

“Shiloh is not a Church Programme, but a Mountain of answered prayers after the order of Hannah. Shiloh is ordained a platform for the rise of giants among us. Shiloh is a mountain of vision and revelation.

“Shiloh is a prophetic platform for the conferment of dominion both on us as a Church and as individuals, so as to subdue the land before us,” he added.
He said that prophetically, Shiloh was ordained a platform for conferment of dominion upon members of the Winners’ family and Nigeria at large.
“And the whole congregation of the children of Israel assembled together at Shiloh and set up the tabernacle of the congregation there. And the land was subdued before them.’’
According to him, the land was subdued before them “connotes dominion. Therefore, at this event, every participant shall encounter conferment of dominion in all areas of your lives’’.

The Bishop assured that every participant would have a definite encounter with the word of God for their supernatural change of story.

Oyedepo said: “While waiting on the Lord back in 1998 and inquiring about God’s master plan for Canaan land, among other things, God said, He would have us gather annually at Shiloh and that as we do, He will subdue the land before us by granting speedy delivery of our enviable inheritance in Christ.’’

NAN reports that the event which started on Tuesday, would last through Dec. 9, with 55 countries in attendance while 150 other nations watched the proceeding online.

Angola, Botswana, Cameroun, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, France and Gabon are some of the nations represented at the Shiloh.

Others are Ghana, Kenya, Liberia and South Africa. While others from Swaziland Tanzania, Uganda, USA, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Shiloh 2018 is the 20th edition of the annual Shiloh event of the Living Faith Church worldwide.

  • ANAN: Nigerian accountants moving to Cameroun, Cote d’Ivoire

The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) has said that many Nigerian accountants trained at the Nigerian College of Accountancy (NCA) are moving to Republic of Cameroun, Cote d’Ivoire and other African countries to practice.

ANAN President, Shehu Ladan, who made this known ahead of the International Accountants Day holding tomorrow, said the association is joining the rest of accounting professionals worldwide to celebrate theevent and recognize accountants.

“In most parts of the world, November 10 is usually set aside tocelebrate the Accountants for their hard work and immense contributions to the economy,” he said.

He explained that members of the association were fully engaged in accountancy jobs abroad through Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) member bodies, so that such members could practice the profession in other countries of the world.

The ANAN boss urged its members to be bold enough to expose corruption and any corrupt tendency with verifiable facts. In the event of any ANAN member found wanting, the Association also has a mechanism with which it disciplines erring members and has keyed into government’s fight against corruption by ensuring it promotes good governance.

The ANAN President also enjoined ANAN members to expose any irregularity they might have come across in the course of discharging their responsibilities and comply with the regulations and requirements set by the authorities, such as Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML) and other anti-money laundering requirements.

Ladan also spoke on the Whistle Blower Act 2017 and described the Whistle Blowing policy of the Federal Government as a good way of fighting corruption.

According to him, the monetary reward prescribed for a whistle blower is quite commendable but there should be a way where the whistle blower will feel confident and safe to blow the whistle.

“Once the environment is not secured, the whistle blower may not have the courage and commitment to blow the whistle for fear of the unknown.

“The Whistle Blower Act should transcend all strata, both private and public sectors. Meaning that organisations should develop their individual whistle blowing policy in line with the law,’’ the ANAN President said.

  • UNESCO to train 300 experts to implement Lake Chad project

UNESCO to train 300 experts to implement Lake Chad project

UNESCO says it will train 300 scientists, decision makers and community leaders in techniques of water resources management for the implementation of the Biosphere and Heritage of Lake Chad (BIOPALT) project.

Mr Getachew Engida, the Deputy Director General of UNESCO announced this on Monday in Abuja.

He spoke during the launch of the project at the ongoing International Conference of Lake Chad (ICLC).

The theme of the conference is: `Saving the Lake Chad to Revitalise the Basin’s Ecosystem for Sustainable Livelihood, Security and Development.’

Engida said that the project implementation will employ trends in technology, scientific research findings to ensure long term planning and successful execution.

“The project aims to enhance our scientific understanding of the complex factors altering the Lake Chad: the effects of climate change, human activity, and how we can adapt to these changes.

“We will bring cutting edge technology, including drones and other imaging equipment, and provide training.

“These new findings will be shared via databases and atlases to strengthen scientific cooperation, to collectively devise innovative responses.

“Chad, Cameroun and Nigeria will integrate the African Drought Monitor system to share data,’’ he said.

Engida said that the interventions to be deployed in the restoration of the lake were expected to launch it to trans-boundary World Heritage Site, as well as boost animal farming.

“To ensure the long-term success of this project, the local people must have a stake in it.

“The training will eventually reach some 30,000 residents who will be empowered to make decisions for their community, yet in harmony with the whole ecosystem.

“A community radio will also reach two million more residents to understand the implications of sustainable water management in their daily lives.

“By creating a common knowledge basis, we hope to set the region on course to have several new trans-boundary World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve.

“This international recognition would further bind the destiny of the diverse groups in the region in finding a long-term sustainable balance,’’ he added.

Engida recalled that over two million people in the region have been displaced and close to seven million people in the area faced food insecurity.

Engida said that the issue of Lake Chad impacts heavily on climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals of 2030 calls for the collective action to eradicate poverty and tackle climate change.

He noted that the restoration of Lake Chad is a universal imperative, adding that the world will be poorer ecologically and culturally without it.

The Lake Chad Basin shrank for the past 30 years from 25,000 square kilometres in the 1960s to 2,500 square kilometres in 2000.

Gombe approves N8m for anti-snake venom

Gombe State Government on  Monday said it had approved N8 million for the procurement  of anti-snake venom for the Snake Bite Treatment Centre, Kaltungo.

Dr Kennedy Ishaya, Commissioner for Health, Gombe State, disclosed this to newsmen in Gombe.

He said the state government would inform the public as soon as the venom arrive the centre.

Kennedy said the centre provided free treatment, antibiotics as and surgical care to patients bitten by snakes.

He said the Federal Government had  in July provided 100 ampoules to the centre, adding that all the drugs had been exhausted.

  • FG slams Cameroun for deporting 100, 000 Nigerians, appeals for understanding

FG slams Cameroun for deporting 100, 000 Nigerians, appeals for understanding

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on  Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, yesterday gave Cameroun a thumps down  for the  alleged deportation of over 100,000 Nigerians  from that country.

Dabiri-Erewa in a statement by her Media Assistant, Abdul-Rahman Balogun, called the deportation of the Nigerians who fled their homes to escape the Boko Haram insurgency as worrisome and inhuman.

She said that Cameroon should heed the UN’s call on all countries to protect refugees fleeing the carnage in the North-East of Nigeria and not to return them there.

“This unfriendly attitude of the Camerounian soldiers to Nigerian asylum seekers is really worrisome,’’ Dabiri-Erewa said.

She appealed to Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other West African regional groups to prevail on Cameroun to be “their brothers’ keeper in a situation like this’’.

She said that deportations, according to Human Rights Watch, defied UN refugee agency’s plea not to return anyone to North-East of Nigeria until the security and human rights situation had improved considerably.

The presidential aide said that a 55-page Human Rights report entitled “They Forced Us onto Trucks like Animals: Cameroon’s Mass Forced Return and Abuse of Nigerian Refugees,” condemned the act.

The report, according to her, states that since early 2015, Cameroonian soldiers had tortured, assaulted, and sexually exploited Nigerian asylum seekers in remote border areas.

She said that the report added that the soldiers also denied the Nigerians access to the UN refugee agency, and summarily deported, often violently, tens of thousands to Nigeria.

“It also documents violence, poor conditions and unlawful movement restrictions in Cameroon’s only official camp for Nigerian refugees as well as conditions recent returnees face in Nigeria,’’ she said.

Dabiri-Erewa said that Cameroun’s forced returns breached UN principles, which prohibited forceful return of refugees and asylum seekers to persecution and, under regional standards in Africa, to situations of generalised violence such as in Nigeria’s North-East.

“I keenly watched the match and I am confident that if the tempo is sustained, the Super Eagles will regain their lost glory and become a national team every Nigerian will love to watch.

The former President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) described the Eagles as unstoppable against the Cameroonians.

“The scintillating performance of the Eagles signified restoration of hope that Nigerian football will rise again,’’ he said.

Agu-Ejidike commended the technical crew for an effective formation which resulted in the outstanding performance of the team.

“The team’s line-up is the best thing that ever happened to the senior national team in the recent times.

“The combination of midfield maestro, Mikel Obi alongside Ndidi and Onazi who did the clearing and the running stabilised the midfield.

“Even as the overlapping Victor Moses gave Odion Igalo the leverage to rout the defense of the visiting Cameroonians.

“It was just a perfect team selection that gave us the match,’’ he said.

He urged the team to ensure they win the three points at stake in the return leg in Cameroun on Monday.

“Nigeria, with nine points should ensure they clinched the World Cup ticket by gaining more points in the subsequent qualifiers.

“The team should know that it is not yet over until is over, so it not yet done until we make it to Russia,’’ Agu-Ejidike said.

He, however, commended the Nigeria Football Federation and the Akwa Ibom State Government for the motivation and support to the Super Eagles.
