  • Campaign group carpets Agbaje over education budget proposal

A group, Campaign for Integrity in Governance (CIG), has described the proposal of Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr Jimi Agbaje, to spend 50 per cent of the state’s annual budget on education as laughable and a sign of his ignorance about how to run a government.

In a statement yesterday by its President Rasaq Olokooba, CIG noted that Agbaje’s proposal confirmed the widespread notion that Lagos, as the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria, does not need a greenhorn and an inexperienced person to govern it.

“Mr. Agbaje has clearly demonstrated his poor judgment and incompetence on fiscal matter and in running a local government, let alone a state like Lagos with over 20 million population. It is fiscally impossible for any government anywhere in the world to spend half of its annual budget on a single line item.

Lagosians should ask Mr. Agbaje what will happen to other sectors, like health, waste management, security, environment, transportation, among others, if education alone gulps 50 per cent of the budget.

  • He won’t disappoint, says campaign group

The Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) has hailed the choice of All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as leader of the campaigns for President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election in his capacity as co-chairman of the APC Presidential Campaign Council.

It said the former Lagos State governor will not disappoint the party and its standard bearer (President Buhari), in the electioneering process for the 2019 polls, judging by his tenacity and political structure.

The President’s support group made its position known yesterday in the wake of reports of alleged rising discontent within the APC over the composition of its presidential campaign council, which the President inaugurated yesterday in Abuja.

According to the said reports, state governors and some prominent members of the party were allegedly to be unhappy with the composition of the council of a belief that it is populated by those believed to a leader of the party.

But in a statement issued by its Director of Communications and Strategic Planning, Mallam Gidado Ibrahim, the BCO dismissed such reports, noting that there is no cause for alarm.

The group said: “There couldn’t have been a better choice for a head of the APC presidential campaign council for the forthcoming elections than Tinubu at a time the party is going into the general elections within a short period after undergoing a healing process spearheaded by Tinubu himself.

“If there is party supremacy whereby directives of party leaders are being enforced today, it was the ‘Jagaban’ who sustained it. By employing both partisan and non-partisan social forces, Tinubu was able to give validity and currency to party supremacy.

“In President Buhari’s thinking when he designated him to lead the consultation, reconciliation and confidence-building efforts in the APC last year, only a person of Tinubu’s political stand can settle all the intra-party feuds in the APC the way he provided the critical supplement for APC’s victory in 2015. And in earnest, the appointment of the former Lagos State governor to lead the APC reconciliation committee paid off.

“We believe that he will repeat this same feat of keeping the party as one and how he led the party to win the 2015 polls by leading the APC to a resounding victory in the forthcoming elections in his capacity as co-chairman of the party’s campaign train.

“Those who seem to be worried, going by reports, should relax their mind and give Tinubu the support he needs to actualise the party’s dream of emerging victorious in the 2019 polls.”

The BCO promised to mobilise hundreds of other support groups in the APC to give the Buhari and Tinubu-led presidential campaign council the support to garner votes during the elections.

Ibrahim said: “Already, the BCO is mobilising more than 100 support groups within the APC to assist the Buhari/Tinubu-led presidential campaign council execute a successful electioneering process. We believe that Tinubu has remained a rallying point in the APC and Nigerian politics.

“As one of the major architects of the merger which gave birth to the APC, he has proven that he has what it takes to stitch the torn parts of the governing party. With a unique and pungent modus operandi in politics, he commands respect in the party, which will turn out to be a big plus for the party in the forthcoming elections.”

  • Council gets campaign group for Sanwo-Olu

The Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos has inaugurated an Independent Campaign Group (ICG) in the council to work for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship candidate, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

It’s chairman, Alhaja Funmilayo Akande-Muhammed urged the members of the group to ensure Sanwo-Olu records landslide victory at the poll.

“The 2019 governorship election is critical to the further development of our state. To ensure victory at the poll, it requires good planning. Your responsibility is to market Mr Sanwo-Olu from house to house until the whole Apapa-Iganmu LCDA gets the clear message of hope,” she said.

Alhaja Akande-Muhammed urged the members to study the party’s manifestoes and “our incoming governor’s programmes. We must not take anything for granted; we must keep the flag flying.”

  • Campaign group: no leader can defeat Buhari in 2019

THE North Central chapter of the PMB Sensitisation/Workshop Committee (PMB-SWC), one of the campaign President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign groups, said yesterday that none of the present Nigerian leaders has the capacity to defeat the President in the 2019 presidential election.

Addressing a news conference in Abuja to unveil the group’s activities, its chairman, Williams Ozi-Raji, said the Integrity and achievement of the President will speak for him during the 2019 elections.

Ozi-Raji said plans have been concluded to carry out sensitisation programmes across the Northcentral states on the need to re-elect the President for a second term.

He added that Buhari was a man who had zero-tolerance for corruption and injustice, noting that his political will had helped in transforming the economy.

He said: “Within the age bracket of those who have served in government, we do not have anybody that equals the President in terms of character, credibility and persons.

“After President Muhammadu Buhari, only a few of the younger generation can match his character and credibility. But within the age bracket of those who have served in government and still intend to serve, they do not have any person that can equally wear his shoe.”

Saying that the group would work for the election of other contestants in the All Progressives Congress (APC) from ward to the federal level, he said: “In achieving this, a lot has been put on ground structurally because if you do not plan, it simply means you have planned to fail.

“We are also to ensure that every Nigerian in the Northcentral is properly educated on what PMB has done for Nigerians for him to deserve a second term.

“This will be from the ward, local and state level in the Northcentral states; the road transport workers, civil servants, the less-privileged and the physically-challenged will all be carried along.

He dismissed claims that the entry of the New-Peoples Democratic Party (nPDP) into the APC was responsible for President’s victory in 2015,

  • We didn’t bring mopol to Ekiti to kill Fayemi, says campaign group

The Prince Tayo Adebiyi Campaign Organisation has denied the claim that the mobile policeman that fired gunshots at Hon. Opeyemi Bamidele and five other All Progressives Congress (APC) members last Friday was in Ekiti State on an illegal duty.

The group also denied harbouring any plan to assassinate the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, describing the shooting incident as an “accidental discharge”.

Adebiyi, a House of Representatives aspirant, who is in police custody was arrested on Saturday to state all he knows about the shooting incident.

Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, Director General, Prince Tayo Adebiyi Campaign Organisation, Mr. David Ayeni, said his principal brought the policeman because of the growing incidence of kidnapping along Efon-Iwaraja-Erinmo, in recent times.

Ayeni clarified that the policeman was struggling with a group of party members, who wanted to mob the dignitaries when the trigger was suddenly pulled and released the bullets.

He said the shooting was regrettable, but insisted that it was a clear case of accidental discharge as once posited by the Ekiti State Police Command.

Ayeni appreciated the Nigeria Police Force for their effectiveness, by promptly bringing the situation under control, saying this reduced the number of casualties.
