Buhari: we’re delivering on campaign promises

    •We’re tackling herdsmen killings

President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday that he remained focused on delivering his campaign promises.

Buhari was elected for a four-year tenure in 2015.

The three pronge promises are: securing the lives and properties of Nigerians, halting the pillage of the economy by corrupt public officials and creating employment opportunities for the youth.

Buhari spoke while receiving the Board of Directors of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) at the State House in Abuja.

He said the initial economic challenge posed by recession was already dwindling with the economy smarting out and posting better results on falling inflation rates, higher foreign reserve and better ranking on ease of doing business.

Quoting President Buhari at the meeting, presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said: “If you look critically into the 2018 budget, we have already taken into account key issues of more stable electricity, construction of roads and rails, and the airport concession.’’

The President added that the government would work more to accelerate and increase momentum in agriculture, power, gas, manufacturing and processing. He commended the Chinese government for its support in improving infrastructure in Nigeria.

“We send our gratitude to the Chinese for all their support to Nigeria. Since Independence, no country has helped our country on infrastructural development like the Chinese.

“In some projects, the Chinese help us with 85 per cent payment, and soft loans that span 20 years. No country has done that for us,’’ he said.

The President assured Nigerians that the rising attacks on communities by herdsmen would soon be brought under control by security forces deployed in the vulnerable areas across the country.

He said the unfortunate incident of attacks, which had resulted in loss of lives and properties, had already brought sorrow and hardship on many Nigerians, with the government deeply affected.

President Buhari said the government would continue to strengthen its relationship with the NESG, especially in integrating its recommendations into policies that will improve the livelihood of all Nigerians.

Chairman of the NESG Board of Directors Kyari Abba Bukar, commended the government for the “pragmatic approach’’ in engaging with citizens of Niger Delta region which had translated into steady rise in oil production.

“We salute your courage in providing support to the states that have had fiscal challenges. We recognise that without the intervention of the Presidency, many state governments would have been unable to pay salaries last year,’’ he said.

Bukar said the outlook on the economy remained upwardly positive, projecting a 3.5 per cent GDP growth, urging the President to pay more attention on the herdsmen attacks, which could reverse the gains recorded in the agricultural sector.

The traders were particularly thrilled by the ongoing construction of Ndemnde bridge that would link Maryland community with Achara Layout, Enugu, noting that it is noteworthy that the gigantic project is being executed in the face of the harsh the country’s economic climate.

The bridge is among the 35 development projects kicked off simultaneously across the 17 local governments by the governor late last year.

According to the traders, the bridge will open access roads and boost economic activities at the market and its environs and impact positively on the people’s lives.

Speaking to reporters who visited the site, one of the traders, Mr. Jerome Okechukwu Chime, thanked Ugwuanyi for fulfilling the campaign promise he made to the timber traders when he visited them, adding that the bridge would eliminate the challenge of accessing Achara Layout from the market via a wooden makeshift bridge.

“I really praise, Chief Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for living up to his campaign promises. When he came here during his campaign, he promised us that he would transform the area if elected governor of the state. As it is today, he has begun to fulfill his promises to the people of Maryland, Timber Market and Achara Layout because this project here would impact positively on our lives and businesses,” Chime said.

He noted that the painstaking process of going through Maryland Road, Awkunanaw Street, Kenyetta Market to deliver goods to customers living at Achara Layout, which is just across the bridge would be resolved when the project is completed.

Another resident, Mrs. Nnenna Ogbe, who has a vegetable garden across the bridge said the residents heaved a huge sigh of relief when the governor kicked off the construction of the bridge, adding that accessing her garden and transporting the produce to the market would be very easy for her once the project is delivered.

Community lands as in other matters of the community are under the enigie, odionwere or owhien as the case may be.”

“I have no doubt in my mind that you will deploy all your wealth of experience both in the private sector and in the immediate past administration of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to effectively utilise the human and material resources in Edo state to take it to greater heights through good governance and provide the good people of Edo state the good dividends of democracy.

  • Cleric seeks action on campaign promises

Cleric seeks action on campaign promises

How that you have won, you will do well to fulfil commitments made to your constituents.

That was the message of the Bishop of Aba Diocese, Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Christian C. Ugwuzor to politicians who won election into various positions in the country.

Ugwuzor stated this at St. Michael’s Anglican Cathedral Church, Aba, Abia State where the member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Rtn. Ossy Prestige was in attendance.

The Bishop noted that some politicians make certain promises to the electorate while seeking their votes, but abandon them soon after winning the election.

The cleric added that some of the politicians go as far as diverting money meant for the public into their private accounts.

He described Hon. Prestige, though, as one that has showed exemplary leadership and quality representation and one who is willing to affect the lives of his constituents positively, promising that the church would never relent in its prayers for Prestige and leaders in constituted authority.

Prestige said that he was in the church to present himself before God on a day that coincided with his birthday and also thank the church for their prayers and support during the 2015 general election.

Prestige used the opportunity to reiterate his campaign promises of touching the lives of his constituents positively and ensuring that they enjoyed quality representation during his time as the lawmaker representing the zone.

‘Buhari is fulfilling his campaign promises’

What impact have you made on your constituency?

I was first elected into the House of Representatives in 2011 to represent Iwo, Ayedire/Olaoluwa Federal Constituency of Osun State. As a result of my meritorious service to my people within those four years they decided to re-elect me in 2015.

Along the line, l was able to donate farm implements such as two brand new tractors to my constituents. I also gave scholarships to indigent students from the constituency; empower unemployed youths with millions of naira; sink boreholes throughout the constituency, electrification step down plan aiming at boosting electricity supply and distribution of General certificate of Examination forms (GCE) to the first six students in  three selected schools,

I also recommendations to the Federal Government on how to complete abandoned federal projects within my constituency. I have also assisted in subsidising the price of fertilizers for the farmers, provided financial assistance for market men and women, artisans.

In the area of education, I organised campus scope programme at the Reality TV, Iwo. I’ve equally built offices for market men and market women at Odo Ori Iwo and the offices are being furnished with modern facilities, I have built an ICT centre at AUD Araro Iwo.

What is your assessment of the APC-led Federal Government?

President Muhammadu Buhari can be described as a messiah sent to save us from the 16 years of PDP mal-administration in the country. As you can see, within Buhari’s few months in office so far, he has done a lot and the good people of Nigeria are heaving a sigh of relief.

For example, fuel price has stabilised at N87.00 per litre and it is readily available at filling stations across the country. The price of cement has equally gone down, from N2.000 per bag at the tail end of Jonathan administration, to around N1, 200.

President Buhari also deserves kudos for his fight against corruption. Buhari should be commended as well in the area of job creation, security, especially in the area of taking the battle to the door step of Boko Haram.

What can be done to put a stop to the insurgency in the Northeast?

The cooperation of all Nigerians are needed to make the December deadline a reality. Nigerians should try to compliment the effort of the Federal Government and security agencies, by being security conscious, especially in the areas like Abuja, Bornu, Yobe, Adamawa, Lagos and Plateau States. The reality is that government alone cannot do it alone, except through our assistance.

I also want to use this medium to call on private establishments to assist the government, by creating employment opportunity for the teeming unemployed graduates.

For instance, we have a lot of potentials in agriculture, which use to be the pivot around which the economy revolved in the early 60s. If our youths can be encouraged to embrace agriculture, the issue of unemployment will become a thing of the past.

How will you assess the performance of Governor Rauf Aregbesola?

No matter what anybody says, the reality is that Governor Rauf Aregbesola is a performer. It is only those who are familiar with the state before he became governor that can appreciate what he has done so far. The network of roads that he constructed to open up the rural areas is second to none.

Besides, the governor sponsored some young farmers to Israel and China, to go and learn the rudiments of modern-day farming. By the time he would be winding up, the state is going to be the food basket of the nation and this will translate to opening the economy of the state; from being a civil service state to one driven by the private sector.

Most banks have agricultural-related products that the youths can assess, to turn farming into a business. This is a better option than waiting for office work which may never come and in the end, they may be frustrated. This is the time to put on their thinking caps and be more creative to utilise the abundant opportunities in the sector.

In terms of security, Governor Aregbesola has invested heavily in this regard and that is why the state is relatively peaceful. In this area, he also engages these youths as volunteers and they are also engaged in various sectors, including sweeping the street, traffic monitoring, environmental sanitation officers, and other sundry matters. At the end of it all, the multiplier effect on the economy of the state is very significant.
