  • PDP lawmaker backs anti-graft campaign

A member of the House of Representatives has said the accusations that the investigation  of corrupt government  officials by President Muhammadu Buhari is only targeted at members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is misplaced and unfounded.

Okechukwu Eze (PDP, Anambra), who spoke in Abuja at the weekend,  said President Buhari’s administrative style should rather be supported by all as he (Buhari) was prepared for power having tried several times in the past.

He said: “The perception that PDP members are targeted is to be expected. These are people who have been in the opposition for so many years, they have developed a mindset.

“Now, all of a sudden, power is in APC hands. It will take time to realise that when APC was the opposition, they have always seen PDP in a bad light.

“Now as President, he needs to look at things from a different perspective, because no matter what he thinks of PDP, power now belongs to him.

“He is not President of APC or CPC but of Nigeria, with all its pimples and blemishes, the good, the bad and the ugly.”

  • Campaign uses veil to call for Chibok girl’s release

Campaign uses veil to call for Chibok girl’s release

A new social campaign on Chibok girls, Boko Halal (education is good), has been launched by Noah’s Ark, a creative agency. With the hashtag #Put Yourself in Their Shoes, it allows individuals to empathise with the girls and their families by uploading their faces behind a veil with a mobile image-resizing app designed by the initiator. ADEDEJI ADEMIGBUJI reports.

Noah’s Ark has embarked on another  cause-marketing campaign for the Chibok girls this year. The agency’s trajectory last year with Boko Halal campaign, “Yes, We are Boko Halal”, was rejected by traditional media, perhaps, for fear of having their offices in the North attacked by the insurgents.

This time around, the agency is putting faces of President Muhammadu Buhari, his Chadian and Cameroonian counterparts, Idris Derby and Paul Biya, behind a pudah or veil, made by a mobile image-resizing app, in an attempt to deepen the campaign with the theme: #Putyourselfintheirshoes.

“Like we did to these leaders by putting them in the shoes of the missing Chibok girls and their families as a way of sharing their pains and calling other leaders to action to save them, Nigerians can also go to the app to put their faces behind the pudah, as a way of showing empathy and continue the BringBackOurGirls campaign,” said the Group Managing Director, Noah’s Ark, Mr. Lanre Adisa.

A daring effort by an advertising agency, the campaign has been archived in the Ads of The World (AoTW), the world’s largest advertising archive and community showcasing creative adverts from around the world, barely a week after it was released. It generated about 2,358 views within one week on Youtube, as at last check by The Nation on Wednesday, while conversations about the campaign continues to heighten on AdsoftheWorld.com and Youtube.

With the failure of the print media to deliver the needed impact last year, the agency has fully embraced digital media to spread the campaign. Some of the platforms are twitter, YouTube and mobile app to deepen conversation and engage various demography.

Adisa said the decision to approach the Chibok Girls issue through an advertisement campaign was borne out of the concern for the girls and their parents who, for over a year, have been in agony on the whereabouts of their children.

It would be recalled that the girls’ campaign, hashtag #BringBackOurGirls went viral last year, attracting high-profile political figures  such as the First Lady of the United States (US), Mrs. Michelle Obama; former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, who endorsed the social media campaign. But the conversation on social media didn’t lead to any political action.

With the new creative vigour employed by Noah’s Ark this year, Adisa believes President Buhari has put some measures in place to see that the girls are rescued, and that more still needs to be done by the international community, and especially, the corporate world in terms of sustaining the momentum and the awareness that nearly 300 souls are still missing and are somewhere out there expecting to be rescued one day.

Perhaps, this is why the agency, image-resizing that mobile app is meant to make everyone put their faces behind the pudah, like those of the three presidents-Buhari, Derby and Biya, whose countries are strategic to curbing the activities of the insurgency to show empathy for the missing girls and their families.

The three presidents have continued to share intelligence on ways to curb the activities of the insurgency just as it is expected of every Nigerian, Chadian and Cameroonian to assist the government in any capacity to save the missing girls.

However, the print campaign material is designed in three different formats. The posters show the pictures of three African presidents, Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, Idris Derby of Chad and Paul Biya of Cameroon, all wearing veils to depict the Islamic religious coloration of the crisis.

It also displays flyers where there are just figures of veils without faces, symbolising that the kidnapped girls could just be anybody’s daughter, hence the need for all to demand that something urgent be done to effect their release; while the third print material are stickers with faceless veils in black on white background.

According to the firm’s Creative Director, Bolaji Alausa, the online materials are equally potent, as the pictures paint sad reminders of the precarious situation of the girls in captivity.

One is a photograph of a traditional grinding stone with a hand grenade on it, a symbol of feminine action in limbo, while the second photograph shows a mortar with a rocket launcher in place of the pestle, also portraying what other uses some of the girls may have been put into.

Meanwhile, the agency is also involving the Muslim communities in the fight by going to popular mosques to encourage Muslim scholars to preach against terrorism. An online video campaign was designed to awaken the consciousness of the Muslim community to show more pragmatic concern on the matter. It shows a scene in a mosque where they hide the shoes Muslims usually leave behind at the mosque entrance while praying. When they finished the prayers they began to look for the shoes. It was then they were reminded of the missing girls and the need to spare some minutes in prayers for them. The import is that if we can be concerned with the loss of mere pairs of shoes, which we can buy in the market, how come the seeming apathy towards the missing of about 300 girls? Food for thought!

With 22 likes and no dislike, the Noah’s Ark cause related campaign, is hopeless but prays that the girls will return.

But the online conversations showed that the world has not forgotten the girls.

“Hashtag slacktivism didn’t work, so let’s try praying? Maybe if that doesn’t work we could try wishing on a shooting star!,” said Jebus 484 pencils on Aug 07, at 22:47. Another commentator, Keith Charnley, on Youtube campaign said: “The greatest challenge will be when the survivors eventually return to their communities – if they ever can. The Army is doing its best under good leadership. It is criminal what happened in northern Nigeria. I dread to think what the brave soldiers will find once they move on the camp or camps where the girls are held.”

Whether the campaign works or not, the truth is that all efforts to get the girls back have proved futile aft0er 486 days in captivity, but it is good that an ad agency is spending its resources to show care and concern for the girls, by calling people to action.

  • Can Ikpeazu fulfill his campaign promises?

Can Ikpeazu fulfill his campaign promises?

These are challenging times for Abia State. The infrastructure battle cannot be abandoned. There is much work to do. But, the resources are depleting. How will Governor Okezie Ikpeazu navigate the difficult ship of state? Asks Political Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU.

For eight years, Abia State was bogged down by some predecessor-successor tension, which degenerated into a protracted crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The state is poor. But, being a commercial nerve centre, it has prospects. But, the potential was not fully tapped. During the last election, the people voted for the former university don, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, to run the state.

The governor swung into action immediately. Although his attention is being diverted by the post-election litigation, he remains focused. Ikpeazu, who was a member of the previous administration, is conversant with its strengths and weaknesses. However, the governor, like his counterparts in many states, is constrained by the cash crunch.

Ikpeazu embarked on value engineering. He introduced a frugal approach to management. Leading by example, he cut his salary by half. That singular move was meant to send the signal that he planned to run a prudent government that gives no room for wastages. But, according to stakeholders, slashing of salary is not the only solution. All the drain pipes and loopholes exploited by government officials should be blocked.

The governor has also taken some steps to cut the cost of governance. In his view, governance is not a tea-party or about showmanship. He said he would only embark on few trips as demanded by his work. But, during those trips, he has demonstrated discipline by travelling with not more than three aides, thereby cutting significantly, the cost of foreign trips by officials.

Ikpeazu has ordered a comprehensive staff audit in the civil service to enable government determine its actual staff strength. The goal is to weed out ghost workers through an Integrated Payroll Verification System. Addressing workers, he said: “I promise to pay salary every 24th of each month”.

The infrastructure battle is a priority. Thus, the governor kicked off with the silted Aba drainage. To succeed, many people believe that the cooperation of Aba residents is important. Aba holds the ace to the economic prosperity of Abia. The two markets-Ariare and Aregua-are in bad shape. But, the bulk of the internally generated revenue comes from the commercial ventures there. When the governor was inspecting of projects in the commercial town, residents told him that “once government is able to get Aba right, Abia will be alright.”

In Ikpeazu’s view, the IGR should be jerked up, if any tangible project is to be implemented. He has set up the  Abia State Economic Advancement Team, of which he is the chairman, to drive the state’s economic growth. “It is the task of this team to drive the IGR of the state from an average of N350 million to N1.5billion within our first year in office,” he said.

The governor has also established the Office of Aba Urban Renewal. The aim is to develop the state by making Aba the launch pad and ensure that Aba becomes the Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Capital of Nigeria. As he promised during his campaigns, he has awarded the construction of seven roads in Aba .

The roads have streetlights. Work has already started on site. The governor plans to commission them in his first 100 days in office. He has directed that the relevant tax collection agencies should stop the collection of taxes and levies so that the system can be automated and harmonised by the Economic Advancement Team.

Ikpeazu’s vision to transform the state into a centre of commerce, where business is conducted seamlessly, and in a secure and clean environment, ,may become a reality. In his projection, Abia is billed to be one of the cleanest states and biggest contributors to the nation’s treasury by virtue of its increased IGR. To meet the new IGR benchmark of N1.5billion, there are existing structures to build upon. For example, when the new Umuahia City, with modern malls, recreational parks, housing estates, and an International Conference Centre capable of boosting the states revenue through tourism is amplified with the rapid rebuilding of Aba, the state would wear a new look.

The centre will accommodate about 9,000 persons. It has a main hall, four conference halls and a banquet hall. It also has with a VIP lounge, gallery, offices and a huge parking lot. A huge revenue is expected to be generated by the government from the building when the centre begins to host big events. The centre will serve the entire Southsouth region. It will only be rivaled by the Calabar International Convention Centre in Cross River State.

The centre is aided by an  advanced information technology. Events can be recorded and the signal beamed live for people to watch anywhere in the world. When completed, it will boost tourism.

Aba is the seat of cottage industries. The governor has promised to develop the sector. “It will generate employment and contribute to our drive for self-sufficiency,” the governor said.

According to sources, the move would enjoy the support of local financial organisations and international organisations, including the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Recently, the African Development Bank (AfDB) approved a $200 million facility for the state to tackle the challenges of water, sanitation and road construction. With this fund, which Ikpeazu said would be judiciously used for the construction of Port-Harcourt Road and other roads, the challenges of refuse dumping and deplorable roads may be a thing of the past. The Office of Aba Urban Renewal has  commenced work on the drainage system in Aba.

Another critical issue is security. Former Governor Theodore Orji started the battle to rid the state of crime. The onus is on Ikpeazu to build on the foundation.

This, perhaps, explains why the government has immediately taken over the security of Enyimba Hotel. The hotel was reportedly bought some 20 years ago by the Aba Chambers of Commerce. Later, it became the hiding place for criminals. However, the hotel is now wearing a new look.

Investment opportunities abound in Abia State for genuine and serious investors. The governor has assured the investors of a safe environment.

The governor said he will defend all sectors-education, health, transport, and social welfare. He described himself as a tested and trusted administrator. But, the members of the opposition do not believe him. To them, he is an impostor in power.

The governor’s victory is still being challenged in court. His challenger is Dr. Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Will he survive at the tribunal and court? If he survives, he will focus on his programmes and work hard to fulfill his campaign promises. If he does not survive, a new government will take over from him.

The campaign will run in the Middle East and African markets including Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Senegal until 31 August.

  • Campaign against hepatitis heightens

Concerned about the alarming rate of hepatitis infection in the country, Fidson Healthcare Plc has called for nation-wide preventive action against the scourge.

It also urged Nigerians to prevent viral hepatitis infection by knowing their status through tests, vaccination and adequate treatment for the string of hepatitis virus known as hepatitis A, B, C, D and E that cause chronic liver diseases that affect millions of people worldwide.

While speaking during the commemoration of the World Hepatitis Day whose theme was “Prevent Hepatitis: Act Now”, recently, the Marketing Manager of the leading pharmaceutical firm, Mr Friday Enaholo said the call became necessary following Federal Ministry of Health statistics which states that over 20 million Nigerians are currently infected with the hepatitis virus.

The figure, he said, represents a substantial percentage of the 400 million people reportedly living with hepatitis B and C worldwide as reported by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The reports also revealed that 1.4 million people die every year due to these infections.

Mr Enaholo said the report is very alarming, as it shows that on the average, one out of every 12 Nigerians is infected with the hepatitis virus.

“The data is worrisome and calls for national preventive actions that should involve every Nigerian. Every stakeholder within the health sector and members of the public has a role to play; either in the area of policy formulation, compliance and living healthy and hygienic lifestyle,” he said.

Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by one of the five hepatitis viruses: A, B, C, D and E which are transmitted through different routes. Hepatitis A and E are transmitted through contaminated food and water; Hepatitis B – through unsafe blood and other bodily fluids; Hepatitis C is transmitted mostly through infectious blood while Hepatitis D serves as an additional infection in the presence of Hepatitis B.

These viruses cause acute hepatitis which is characterised by fatigue, loss of appetite, fever and jaundice. In addition, hepatitis B and C infections can become chronic leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Mr Enaholo further said the diseases are preventable, but regretted that most people, especially those living in rural or semi-urban areas of developing countries don’t even know how to prevent them.

“This is why as a company; we are actively participating in this global campaign by enlightening Nigerians through all possible communication channels, on how they can prevent the hepatitis scourge,” he said.

He, therefore, advised Nigerians to avoid unsafe blood, unsafe injections and sharing of drug-injection equipment that can result in hepatitis infection. He also maintained that safe and effective vaccine can protect the individual from hepatitis B infection.

  • El-Rufai steps up campaign against criminals

El-Rufai steps up campaign against criminals

There is no taking the foot off the accelerator in the drive against criminals in Kaduna State.

The state governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai declared war on miscreants  terrorising the state, adding that anyone who committed murder or engaged in any criminal act must face the music.

The gesture has sent a strong signal to the criminals. Just after he constituted General Martin Luther Agwai led committee on Southern Kaduna killings, the war against criminals has been progressive.

After 120 suspected criminals, including new Sara-Suka miscreant gang members were  charged before a Kaduna court, 41 others have been paraded by the police for armed robbery, illegal gun production and car snatching among others.

The suspects were taken to court and later assigned to various magistrate courts by the Chief Magistrate Court I, Awaulu Musa Aliyu, for the continuation of the case. However, the suspects were taken back to police custody.

Speaking with journalists over the arraignment, Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, Deputy Supretendant of Police, DSP Zubairu Abubakar, disclosed that 120 suspected criminals and terrorist gangs were charged before the court for criminal activities adding that there is no hiding place for miscreants in the state.

He explained that: “We arrested 120 suspected criminals with some acts of terrorism, armed robbery and rape. Some are suspected to be members of a terrorist gang known as Sara-Suka. We arrested some of them on the spot while committing the crime, while others were arrested based on complaints from the public”.

But of specific interest in the Friday parade of suspects at the police headquarters was the case of a car thief who vehemently rejected being referred to as a car snatcher. Aliyu Yakubu who confessed to have stolen about 300 cars from Kaduna since 2012 said, he never snatched a car in his life. Yakubu who suddenly turned an English language teacher, told journalists that, a car snatcher robs the owner at gunpoint.

According to him, “I have a master key that can open any type of car and that is what I have been using to move cars from where they are parked. Immediately I pick a car, I move straight to Niger Republic where I sell it at a fixed price of N300,000:00.

“I normally target places like big people’s areas, rich people’s occasions, because I know they won’t be pained much because they have many other cars. So, they don’t usually report to police on time, before they report, I must have gone far,” Yakubu explained.

On whether his choice of ‘business’ has dark side, he said yes, “In 2013, I was arrested by police for the same offense and I was subsequently charged to court. But a friend, who has political intention came to my rescue and secured my bail.

“So, the case is still in court due to bureaucracy and redtapism. It was as a result of come to court today come tomorrow that I added one plus two and continue with my business pending the time the court will determine my case”, he hinted confidently.

He further added that, “I sometimes traced unsuspecting motorists to their destinations where I use the master key to unlock the car’s sensor after which I drive as fast as I could straight to Niger Republic where my regular buyer would be waiting for the consignment.

“I started in 2012 when I was told that I could make as much as N300,000 on one car. I tried it and I saw that it was not difficult so I continued until when I was caught few days ago by the police in Kaduna”, he explained.

Luck however ran out of him when he attempted to steal another car on popular Isa Kaita road, Kaduna.

  • Imo Police take anti-cult campaign to schools

The Imo State Police Command has kicked off a sensitisation tour of secondary schools in the state as part of its anti-cultism campaign.

In a statement signed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), the Command, said the purpose of the visits is to talk to the students on the dangers of cultism and other related vices.

Some of the schools to be visited as part of the campaign include, Police Secondary School Isu-Nwangele, Isu Girls Secondary School, Emmanuel College Owerri, Holy Ghost College Owerri, Government College Owerri, Owerri Girls College and Naze Secondary School.

Others are, Egbu Girls Secondary, Ikenegbu Girls Secondary School Owerri, Amakohia Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikenegbu Girls Secondary School Owerri and Boys Secondary School New Owerri, among others.

During a similar programme in Lagos, the Police, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) urged pupils to avoid criminal activities.

They made this appeal at the inaugural session of the mentorship platform project Nigeria organised by the African Youth Initiative on Crime Prevention (AYICRIP) in partnership with the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Social Development, Lagos state.

The programme, aimed at commemorating the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, held at the Sam Shonibare Community Centre, Surulere, Lagos.

The theme was: “Let’s develop our lives, our communities, our identities, without drugs.”

Commissioner of Police, Lagos state, Kayode Aderanti, described drug trafficking as a major crime, which enhances other violence in the society, adding that the government should create more channel for mentors to educate students on crime reduction.

Represented by Edward Egbuka, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Area ‘G’ Commander, Ogba, Aderanti said: “This is the best time to groom you all to abstain from criminal activities because you are less than 17 or 18. And with all you hear today, you will know what is right for you. If you also have the fear of God, you will have a good mindset that this thing is wrong. Watch you company, be focused and be committed because we have Presidents, Governors among you all.

“To our parents too, good name is better than gold. Try to teach them the importance of hard work, importance of diligence because the family is the building block of the children.”

  • Melaye’s campaign of blackmail

SIR: The senator representing Kogi West at the National Assembly Dino Melaye recently embarked on a campaign of blackmail against the APC leader Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Senator Smart Adeyemi and former Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke on his on-going case at Appeal Court.

The exercise is nothing more than an attempt to court a public sympathy. When the Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Lokoja, challenging his election into the Senate struck out the case, it was on technical grounds. Obviously, he knew that his case was standing on a shaky ground.

The allegation by Melaye that Asiwaju Tinubu was supporting Senator Adeyemi to get a favorable judgment at the Appeal Court merely reveals the character of Melaye.  Senator Adeyemi has said severally that he does not even have the phone number of Asiwaju Tinubu and moreover the latter is not known to a member of the panel of judges.

All of these may well be part of Melaye’s desperation to be in good books of Senate President Bukola Saraki perhaps with a view to secure a juicy committee post at the senate.

We implore Melaye to face his case at Appeal Court and stop blackmailing his opponent and other notable Nigerians to achieve his personal other selfish interests. We know the Appeal Court would study all the facts on the ground as the case demands and do justice to whoever won the election and the rightful candidate made to claim his mandate as given by the good people of Kogi West Senatorial District.
