  • Authors take literary campaign to college

The Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Imo State chapter, has organised a two-day event for students and writers to commemorate the World Literacy Day, which is celebrated on September 8, yearly.

The campaign, which took place in the auditorium of the Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE), Owerri, featured literacy carnival, readings, poetry performance, teen authorship programmes and talks on the different genres of literature.

The global theme for this year was Literacy for sustainable development, but considering the current ebola scourge in the continent, ANA adopted its sub-theme: Literacy for the eradication of diseases.

In his remark, chairman of ANA in the state, Mr Chidozie Chukwubuike noted that the need to hold such event arose considering the dwindling standard of education in the society and to arouse the consciousness of people to take reading seriously.

“It is evident most students no longer read. Take for instance recent performance of students in national examinations, you will see that the youths have been distracted by the invention of the internet, cable TV and the concentration has tilted from reading to social media activities. It is on the strength of this that ANA Imo chapter went this far to redeem the reading culture among students,” Chidozie said.

He also thanked the school proprietors and guardians for releasing their wards to attend the programme despite the fear of the EVD.

The highlight of the occasion was an awareness campaign round the campus and a drama presentation titled The trafficker,  performed by a theatre group.

Five injured in ‘attack’ on Osun APC members

    •PDP: they assaulted us

No fewer than five persons were critically injured yesterday in Iponda, Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State, in a clash between Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) supporters and All Progressives Congress (APC) members.

It was gathered that the APC members were celebrating Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s re-election when they were attacked.

Some APC members, who sustained deep machete cuts, were rushed to the hospital, where they are on admission.

One of the victims, Deji Akanmu (Ward 4), was stabbed in the head.

An Assistant Director in the Bureau of Communication and Strategy in the Office of the Governor, Mr. Bosun Oyintiloye, who is from the area, described the attack as barbaric.

He said the incident was reported to the police division in Ibokun.

However, the Media Director of Senator Iyiola Omisore’s Campaign Organisation, Prince Diran Odeyemi, said it was the APC members that attacked PDP supporters.

Odeyemi said: “We are surprised that despite the APC’s victory in Saturday’s election, its members have continued to harass, maim and humiliate supporters of our party across the state. We urge Governor Aregbesola to call them to order before the situation gets out of hand.”

  • ‘Campaign gifts should be discouraged’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Kunle Oyeyemi, has described the distribution of rice, cooking oil, bags of beans, kerosene and other food and household items to the electorate by a political party in Osun State as “open bribery”.

Speaking with reporters in Osogbo, the state capital, Oyeyemi said the trend should be discouraged because it poses great danger to democracy.

He said: “This trend is more peculiar to Nigeria and I believe it is tantamount to direct and open bribery, which is against electoral and other laws of the land.”

Oyeyemi urged the people not to be tricked into giving up their voter cards for a stipend, adding that their voter cards are “means to a profitable political end”.

He said: “It is common knowledge in Osun State that the campaign team of an opposition party is aggressively buying voter cards from potential voters. This is a manifestation of anxiety resulting from their realisation of the challenge they face in this election.

“I warn the people of Osun State not to sell their voter cards. The card is their power to decide who rules them. People should also be advised not to engage in a fight or argue with security operatives invited to provide security during the election.

“The party in question now resorts to all sorts of desperate efforts, including disenfranchising as many as possible members and supporters of the APC. It goes about buying voter cards. My warning to everyone is that under no reason – gift or threat – should any one give his or her voter card to anyone to take away or to copy personal information from the card.

“The democratic process and electioneering activities in this country, including the so-called politics of stomach infrastructure, is getting to a dangerous state, which is unlikely to support the country’s unity.”
