  • Obj Vs CAN

Tornado Obj, the other day, rifled through the churches, upsetting a clearly winded Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).  The thing though about bitter truth is that no matter how much you grate, in agony or in distaste, that truth must be told, for your own good.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to be sure, not exactly himself Mr. Squeaky Clean, in perceived corruption, cronyism and allied matters, nevertheless told Christendom Nigeria what they don’t ever want to hear: on corruption, the Nigerian Church has fallen short of its own moral glory.

Like the Biblical equivalent, when God Almighty looked down and found everyone fallen short of glory, and the cleanest were but a filthy rag, what is left of the Nigerian Church, as far as corruption-tolerance is concerned, is nothing but a can of worms — every pun intended!

Obasanjo just told Nigerian Christendom what everyone knows, and everyday tells the Church, though high pastors resort to sophistry to cover their shame (and further expose their moral nudity): though on corruption the Nigerian Church should have been the hallowed and revered partner of the Buhari Presidency in this life-threatening morass, it has chosen instead to be hollow and empty.

The reaction of the leading lights of the church, to the Obasanjo brutal shellacking, has been predictable: crass finger-pointing.

O, the guilty party are not the Catholics and the Orthodox, the earliest partakers of the  Christian grace, before the free-wheeling and prosperity-mouthing Pentecostals, who tend to be nothing but Pente-rascals!

That might well be true.  CAN, under Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, was the Rasputin of the Jonathan era, with its free-wheeling sleaze.  Why, the man of God, and CAN’s revered president, had his own fair share of scandals: witness the Nigerian aircraft, caught in the vortex of the arms-cum-currency smuggling scandal in South Africa.

The aircraft was traced back as Oritsejafor’s private jet.  Ay, the man of God claimed it was leased to some third parties, and all that.  Well, no one has disclaimed his claim, and he would appear on the clear on the legal front.

But on the moral front, where the Church ought to play with messianic aggression, Oritsejafor didn’t exactly come out like the proverbial Caesar’s wife — that should be above all suspicion.

Neither did CAN.  The last time Hardball checked, the Christian body maintained a shameful silence.  Perhaps, CAN was too busy “eating” under their adopted “Christian” president!  After all, it isn’t good table manners to talk while eating!

Still, scapegoating the Pentecostals — as penterascal as they may be — is rich.  After the ouster of Jonathan and the advent of Buhari, Father Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto, was a notable Catholic that tried to rattle-dazzle everyone, that Buhari should “forget the past”, simply because Jonathan had done a “fantastic” job!

Despite all the flak the good bishop got from an outraged public, Hardball did not see him back down from that high horse, which temper, if not the exact intent, was perceived as corruption-friendly, if not outright tolerant — simply because the person, under fair strictures, was a Christian, and his presidency, a Christian presidency, whatever that means?

Is that not the ultimate corruption of Christian thinking itself?

Even Anthony Cardinal Okogie’s retort that Obasanjo was part of the evil he so much declaimed was neither here nor there.  Yes, Obasanjo grandstands a lot, on morality and allied matters, simply because  he is blessed with a captive but gullible audience.

But his forte is real-politik, not morality.  The church can’t plead such luxury.

Let Nigerian Christendom wake up to its moral and spiritual essence or, eternally keep mum.  It is the time to stand up and be counted — or the Nigerian Church should admit it is more a willful and merry part of the corruption problem,  than be part of a solution to it.

Why Southern Kaduna crisis may not end, by CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said the failure of security agencies to arrest and prosecute culprits of Southern Kaduna crisis is prolonging the fight.
The body advised the government to wake up to its responsibilities.
CAN President Rev Samson Ayokunle spoke at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.
His words: “We should organise prayers again and if possible, with fasting, to seek the intervention of God so that this senseless crisis might stop. I think what has encouraged this type of carnage in Southern Kaduna is the inability of the law enforcement agents to apprehend the criminals responsible for it, and if they were apprehended at all, they were not conclusively prosecuted.
“We have had these days more often than not, the law enforcement agents saying the criminals are “unknown gunmen”. Whose duty is it to know them? Is it not the law enforcement agents?”
Ayokunle said CAN plans to provide relief materials for victims of the carnage in Southern Kaduna and the Agatu community in Benue State.
A statement by Ayokunle’s media aide, Bayo Oludeji, said: “We are planning to visit Southern Kaduna to distribute relief materials to victims of the massacre. We planned to do this earlier but we couldn’t because we received security report that it was not safe to do so. We would equally visit the Agatu community in Benue State to distribute relief materials.
“I urge all of us to pray for Muhammadu Buhari. It is our spiritual and legitimate duty as a people of God. We should also pray for the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, that God guide him aright.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has said failure of security agencies to arrest and prosecute culprits of the Southern Kaduna crisis is a reason why the crisis remains endless.

CAN advised them to wake up to their responsibilities.

Despite the curfew and presence of security agents in the volatile zone, CAN said the killings remain unabated. It called on its members to continue praying for the permanent restoration of peace.

CAN President Rev Samson Ayokunle spoke at the just-concluded meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja.

His words: “We should organise prayers again and if possible, with fasting, to seek the intervention of God so that this senseless crisis might stop. • Don’t abandon Buhari, CAN tells Christians

Don’t abandon Buhari, CAN tells Christians

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has once again asked Christians to continue praying for President Muhammadu Buhari until he returns to the country hale and hearty.
This is contained in a statement signed by Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, Special Assistant Media and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, on Tuesday in Abuja said the results of President’s medical tests suggested further rest.
The CAN President, Rev Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, urged Nigerians especially Christians not to cease praying for the President, the acting President and the country until he returns in good health and sound mind.
Ayokunle, reminded Christians that it is their responsibility to pray for the country and her leaders in season and out of season.
“I call on all well meaning Nigerians, especially Christians not to cease praying for President Muhammadu Buhari as he takes further rest as advised by his doctors.
“It is needless reminding you that as Christians, our responsibilities include but not limited to making supplications, prayers, and intercessions, for all that are in the position of authority.
`That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour…’” (1 Timothy 2:1-2)>

He also allayed fears being expressed in some quarters that the prolonged absence of Buhari has created a vacuum in the Presidency cited the transfer of power to the Vice President.

“We don’t see the need for any hue and cry being made by some people that his unprecedented absence could create a vacuum in the Presidency.

“President Buhari has done what is needful by transferring power to the Vice-President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo who is up to the task.

“The Church should also continue praying for him for divine wisdom, knowledge and understanding as he discharges his constitutional responsibilities.”

Ayokunle called on the security agencies to rise up to the security challenges in the Southern Kaduna by flushing out the hoodlums who are still killing innocent people.

“We call on the security agencies in the country to stop the killings in Kafanchan despite the presence of policemen and soldiers in the area.

“We heard of recent attacks in Atakar and Kaninkon villages of Kaura and Jema’a Local Government Areas in the state.

“All hands should be on deck to flush out those criminals from their hideouts in order to restore a permanent peace to the Southern Kaduna communities once and for all,’’ Ayokunle said. (NAN)

Ambode to Christians: Shun acts that can breed disunity, crisis

…CAN Says Lagos Progressing Despite Recession

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Saturday enjoined Christians to continue to make conscious efforts to sustain the peaceful atmosphere across the country, urging them to also refrain from acts capable of breeding division and igniting avoidable crisis.

The Governor, who spoke at the 2017 Inter-Denominational Divine Service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the Shepherdhill Baptist Church, Obanikoro, Lagos, said he was absolutely convinced that the success stories his administration has recorded so far were made possible by the collective prayers of all Lagosians and more importantly the relatively peaceful atmosphere that has prevailed within the State over time.

“Every situation whether good or bad requires prayers. For us in Lagos State, we have been truly blessed. Indeed, we have enjoyed His grace which has enabled us as a State, to experience unprecedented breakthroughs inspite of economic recession. For instance, a lot of investments and new businesses have come into our State in the last twenty-one (21) months and there are many more in the process.

He therefore urged Christians to lead from the front and continue to pray for not just the progress of the State but the nation at large, just as he assured that his government will continue to promote fairness, justice and everything that will make life more comfortable for Lagosians.

“At this critical period in the history of our nation, the church and indeed everyone who believes in the efficacy of prayer have a responsibility and patriotic duty to pray for the wellbeing and progress of our State and nation. Prayer is the master key and there is no challenge that cannot be surmounted with prayers.

“We remain committed to the goal of making the Lagos work for all; making all our communities economically viable and liveable as well as creating opportunities for everyone to actualise his/her potentials, without discrimination on the basis of ethnic affiliation, religious beliefs or socio- economic circumstances. By His grace, Lagos State will continue to prosper and our nation will rise again and become a pride to the entire black race and humanity,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor, who also expressed his delight to be part of the service, commended the Chairman, Executives and entire membership of CAN in Lagos, for sustaining the initiative which has become a yearly event that brings Christians from different denomination to worship and pray together.

Earlier, Chairman of CAN, Lagos State Branch, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola thanked Governor Ambode for finding time to grace the occasion, noting that it was the first time in the history of the service that a Governor of Lagos State of the Christian faith would be attending the programme personally.

Bamgbola also lauded the Governor for the several laudable projects he had initiated since he assumed office, saying that Lagosians were greatly feeling the impact across the State.

“We wish to let you know here today that we are proud of the wonderful and excellent work that the Lord is using you t do in our dear state of Lagos. In less than two years, God has used you to do great work that every well-meaning Lagosian is commending daily. It is self-evident that truly: ‘Itesiwaju Eko lo jewa l’ogun”, the CAN boss said.

Corroborating him, Rev. Sunday Matilukuro who gave the sermon, said he was particularly amazed on how Governor Ambode was able to surmount the early challenges his administration faced to deliver life changing projects across the State.

“When I was in my former station, we were reading about the traffic jam all over Lagos and I was wondering what was happening, but when I came on visit to Lagos, I was wondering what the noise was all about because what I was seeing was different. You are gradually transforming Lagos to the megacity that it is,” Matilukuro said.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Grace in a Recession’, the cleric urged Christians to seek the face of God and shun sin if they must rise above recession to succeed.

  • CAN hails Ambode

    CAN hails Ambode

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Lagos State chapter, has hailed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for transforming  the state.

The Chairman, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, said this at a briefing on the Interdenominational Divine Service (IDDS) holding tomorrow at Shepherd Hill Baptist Church by 10am.

He said Ambode’s achievements were visible, adding that the state was blessed to have such a visionary and pragmatic leader.

“God has been using the governor. He is doing well and that is why we are praising him.

“If he doesn’t do well, we will be the first to talk about it.

“We are not praising him because we need money or anything. The truth is he is performing well and we should be honest to praise him.”

Bamgbola said Ambode and CAN have “the best of relationships”, dismissing claims  the governor had neither recognised CAN nor attended any of its events.

The 2017 IDDS service, he said, has as its theme: “Grace in a recession”.

CAN to Presidency: Update Nigerians on Buhari’s health status

The Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Thursday advised the Presidency to update Nigerians on President Muhammadu Buhari’s health status.

CAN also advised Nigerians to pray for the President instead of dwelling on the needless rumour that he is dead.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by its Director of Legal and Public Affairs, Evangelist Kwamkur Samuel, CAN said “the Christians Association of Nigeria (CAN) is deeply concerned about the ongoing national conversation on the absence of the President due to ill-health.

“We wish to call on all Nigerians to join hands in prayers for the quick and full recovery of Mr. President and his safe return to Nigeria instead of dwelling on needless rumour about his health.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is human, hence subject to health challenges sometimes. CAN appreciates the anxiety of Nigerians to hear Mr. President speak, but sues for understanding as we await that. It is very clear that our leader is passing through health challenges.

“We advise the Presidency to update Nigerians on how he is fairing and the full progress of his recovery.

“We call on all Christians and indeed all God-fearing Nigerians to dedicate time of prayers for our President and the nation. We owe our leaders prayers and support at all times while shunning divisive opinions that only generate strive.

“CAN also call on Nigerians to give the Vice President, who is also the Acting President, full support and prayers to lead well.

“We acknowledge that government is a continuum, hence, we call on the Acting President, Prof.  Yemi Osinbajo, to be bold in handling critical state matters and not to be distracted by those who do not wish Nigeria well.”

  • CAN slams minister over comments

    CAN slams minister over comments

Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed yesterday came under criticism from Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) leadership over statements credited to him at a town hall meeting in Ilorin.
Mohammed was quoted to have accused Christian religious leaders of making alleged provocative statements that could lead to religious war.
CAN expressed shock and described the minister’s words as disappointing.
A statement issued in Abuja by the Special Assistant to the CAN President, Adebayo Oladeji, said: “We are disappointed but not surprised with the disparaging, lies and abusive statements credited to the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in Ilorin during the Town hall meeting, where he was accusing religious leaders of making alleged provocative statements that can lead to religious war.
“Mohammed in his characteristic manner left out the issues but went after the so-called religious leaders, which we all know, are the Christian leaders because we know that the minister dare not speak against the Moslem leaders, who had said worse things. That would be an open invitation of Fatwah…
“We want to boldly declare that Nigerian Christians love their country and they not only promote peace and unity, but also always pray for her and the leadership. In the last one year, CAN has declared fasting and prayers for Nigeria and her leadership twice. If we are thirsty for a war, we wouldn’t have gone that far.
Is Lai Mohammed accusing of us of telling lies:
•That our members are being killed, maimed and burnt by the Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast?
•That our members are being killed by the Fulani herdsmen in Plateau, Benue and now Southern Kaduna State?
•That those responsible for these killings profess Islam as their religion?
•That those who killed Madam Bridget Agbahime in Kano were Muslims who were arrested but later discharged and acquitted by the court as requested by the state Attorney- General and Commissioner of Justice?”
*That those who killed Madam Eunice Elisha Olawale while doing the morning preaching in Kubwa, Abuja, were Muslim fundamentalists who were arrested but also freed by the Police?
“Is Lai Mohammed telling us that no Christian was killed by the Fulani herdsmen, who invaded the Southern Kaduna, killed and maimed our members and razed down their communities recently? Is Mohammed saying the Fulani herdsmen who have been killing our members are not armed with sophisticated weapons and is it wrong for us to ask where they get the AK-47 and other weapons they are using?
“When all those killings were going on in Plateau, Benue and Southern Kaduna, was there any time Lai Mohammed or anyone in the Federal Government raised up a voice against the atrocities?
“If those murderous Fulani herdsmen are faceless, how come the Sultan of Sokoto is claiming that they are not Nigerians and in another instance, the Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai said they had been paid for the ‘wrong done to them’? Why is it that whenever these murderers are perpetrating their atrocities, the security agencies look elsewhere until their victims decided to fight back? Is it because the security agencies are Muslim dominated? CAN says no to disparaging remarks in the name of politics. Enough of these lies by Lai Mohammed!”

  • CAN condemns suicide bombing

    CAN condemns suicide bombing

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has condemned Monday’s bomb blast at the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) in which four persons were killed, including a professor.
CAN’s President Rev. Samson Ayokunle, in a statement in Abuja, commiserated with the families of the victims and wished the wounded quick recovery.
“CAN commiserate with the family of the victims of the terrorist attack and prays for the comfort of the Holy Spirit for them.
“The association as well prays for quick recovery for those that were injured.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), recalls that three suicide bombers reportedly sneaked into the institution and detonated improvised explosive devices, near a mosque, killing Prof. Aliyu Mani, three others, and wounded many.
According to the CAN president, “only satanic agents amidst us can perpetrate such dastardly acts,’’ adding, “when did worshipping God become a crime.
“The Christian Association of Nigeria condemns the wicked and criminal bombing of people worshipping in the mosques at the University of Maiduguri.
“What offence did these worshippers commit to warrant this? Only the demon possessed individuals can be behind this type of act.’’
He tasked security agencies to go after the terrorists, who have been dislodged from their strongholds, but going about attacking soft targets.
Some students of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), have called for proactive security measures to contain the frequent attacks on their campus by Boko Haram insurgents.
The students made the call in Maiduguri in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
NAN recalls that suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers in the early hours of Monday attacked a mosque within the University campus, killing four people, including a Professor and injuring 17 others.
Some students of the institution, who spoke to NAN, said they would not be intimidated by Boko Haram insurgents.
They urged the management of the university to put in place “proactive security measures’’ to protect students and staff from further attacks.
One of the students Malam Ibrahim Sale said Abubakar Shekau had been making empty threats in the past just to scare people.
“This is not the first time Shekau has been making empty threats on UNIMAID.
“You will recall he even said he would take over the campus sometimes ago but nothing happened.’’
Goni Mahmoud, another student said: “We in Borno have seen it all. Since the University has never being closed even for once what made him (Shekau) think anyone will take him seriously.
“We believe his (Shekau) days are numbered; the army will be on his trail until he has no more hiding place.”
Speaking on the same vein, Salamatu Bashir urged the military and school authorities to take proactive measures to forestall future occurrence.
“The authorities must take the issue seriously and block every route Boko Haram insurgents use to get into the university.
“Honestly I am still in fear because we do not know when they will strike next,” Bashir said.
