    PPA candidate quits job

The governorship candidate of the Progressive People Alliance (PPA), Comrade Thomas Sadoh, has resigned his appointment as a broadcaster with a privately-owned television and radio station in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Comrade Sadoh said he resigned his appointment to enable him focus on his campaigns and be neutral, according to the tenets of broadcasting.

He spoke to reporters at the Benin Airport, shortly after he arrived from Dubai, where he said he met with some Edo indigenes to present his agenda.

Sadoh said he decided to contest for the governorship to bridge the gap between the haves and haves not in the state.

He said: “I won the ticket while I was in Dubai. The party’s leadership agreed to that. The two other people who contested with me stepped down, so I automatically became the candidate of the party.

“We cannot continue to suffer while some people continue to milk us dry. There is no greater commitment than this. I came out because I really want to do this and I know that my chances are brighter than you can ever think.”

On whether he has the financial resources to campaign for the election, Sadoh said he believes the common man in the street would willingly support his victory.

He added: “It is sad that people are raising structure and later collapse them. I am here on my own volition and I have consulted before embarking on this. These people are behind me to ensure that we take over Osadebey Avenue on November 12.”

  • ‘Only Sheriff faction can field PDP candidate for Edo poll’

‘Only Sheriff faction can field PDP candidate for Edo poll’

The Ali Modu Sheriff camp of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has insisted that only the camp is allowed by law to field a candidate for the upcoming Edo state governorship election.

The camp had, during the week, given the party’s governorship ticket to Mr. Matthew Iduoriyekemwen, thereby challenging the validity of the candidature of Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who was ratified by the rival Ahmed Makarfi caretaker committee.

At a press briefing in Abuja yesterday, the Deputy National Chairman of the Sheriff camp, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, maintained that Sheriff is the only recognised national chairman of the PDP.

“We have a point blank court judgment affirming Sheriff as the recognised PDP chairman that is allowed to submit names of governorship candidates for the Edo and Ondo states governorship election”, Ojougboh said.

He dismissed calls by the Makarfi camp for Sheriff’s arrest by the security agencies, saying, if there is anyone to be arrested at all, it should be Makarfi and his group.

Ojougboh said the Port Harcourt court judgment on the strength of which the Makarfi group accused Sheriff of contempt had been appealed, adding that a stay of execution had been filed in respect of the said judgment.

A court in Port Harcourt had on July 4, affirmed the removal of Sheriff as PDP chairman and had also recognised the Makarfi committee as the authentic leadership of the party.

But Sheriff had ignored the judgment and had gone ahead to field a parallel  candidate for the PDP in the Edo governorship election.

Ojougboh stated that the Sheriff camp has been making efforts to reconcile with the Makarfi group, adding however that the Makarfi camp must be ready to a recognise Sheriff as chairman before reconciliation.

“Arrangements are being made for reconciliation with the Makarfi camp. But, Sheriff must be given recognition as chairman for any progress to be made in the reconciliation efforts.

“Recognition for Sheriff is the only panacea for peace in the PDP. Sheriff is ready to address the party’s flawed state and local government congresses that led to the crisis in the PDP”, Ojougboh said.

He emerged as the candidate of the party after polling 372 votes. Onaiwu, who was one of the governorship aspirants of the PDP, pulled out of the race, few weeks to the primary after he alleged plans to rig the exercise in favour of one of the aspirants.

Onaiwu, who disclosed to reporters that he will kick off his campaigns next week, said: “ I am willing to serve my people and we have come up with our four pillars, which is security , trade and Commerce, agriculture and industrialization. Once we are able to achieve those four then we are home and dry.

“Dangote has come to Edo State to invest because Edo is peaceful. We will improve on what the incumbent governor has done so that we will accelerate development to our people”.

Asked why he left the PDP before the primary of the party, he said: “the party leaders were not serious. They lie every day of their lives. For me I have taken my vision to another party that I believe where they will celebrate my vision not a fraudulent party. I have moved on, I have no scandal but we know that one of the PDP candidates have been visiting the EFCC.

“APGA will take over the state, it is a new dawn, I don’t have a god father, God is my god father. If you look at the candidates of the two other political parties they have a god father but God is my god father. I will lead my people where there is milk and honey” he stated.

    PDM adopts Ize-Iyamu as candidate

The Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) has adopted the factional governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, as the governorship candidate.

It said the decision was taken after assessing the qualities of the candidates presented by the two dominant parties.

Edo State chairman of the PDM Nosa Omorodion said the PDM would use the resources at its disposal to actualise Pastor Ize-Iyamu  ambition.

He said the PDM would rally other smaller parties to give their support to Pastor Ize-Iyamu.

He noted that there was no need for smaller parties to present candidates that could not go anywhere in the polls.

The PDM chieftain, who held a meeting with the candidate said the change brought upon the country by the APC has been disastrous.

Responding, Pastor Ize-Iyamu said the Edo PDM leaders have demonstrated high level of patriotism and assured that he would not disappoint them and the Edo people, if elected into office.

He promised to integrate the Edo PDM members into his campaign committee, adding that his relationship with the PDM would not stop after the September 10 election.

The National Organization Secretary of the PDM, Paul Oronor; Edo State treasurer of the party, Philip Uwaifo; and Dr Saliu Edogiaware were some of the PDM leaders who attended the meeting.

A retired nurse and member of Doctors Across Borders, Pastor Peters Omoragbon, has been elected the Edo State candidate of the National Conscience Party (NCP) ahead of the September 10 governorship election.

Omoragbon was the sole aspirant for the party’s primary held at its secretariat in Benin, the state capital.

He said 27 voted for the aspirant.

But Omoragbon was absent during the primary.

The party’s State Chairman Victor Ogba said the election was conducted because it was in accordance with the party’s constitution that delegates must vote.

Ogba said Omoragbon was absent at the primary because he travelled to Europe on a humanitarian assignment, adding that his flight was cancelled because of the terrorist attack in Turkey.

In a video chat with reporters, Omoragbon said his campaigns would be issue-based, promising to uplift the state, if elected.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives were present at the primaries.

  • Osadolor is KOWA party candidate

Thompson Osadolor,  has emerged the governorship candidate of KOWA party in Edo State.

In his acceptance speech, he advised Nigerians against voting for “money bags” politicians, whom he said, do not mean well for the people.

Osadolor noted that money bag politicians usually use their money to buy their way into leadership positions, but end up using the opportunity to amass more wealth.

The KOWA candidate attributed the challenges of Nigeria’s democracy to “money politics” which, according to him, has contributed largely to the under-development of the country.

He said: “It is as a result of this money politics that our leaders hardly does well in office, because they are there for themselves and not me and you.

This, he added, explains why they use every means possible to place themselves as leaders of these parties.”

He urged the people to learn how to support political party and their candidates based on ideology and not money.

Osadolor said the KOWA party is determined to bring about positive changes in the polity in Edo and elsewhere in the country.

  • Edo won’t vote for candidate with court case, says Oshiomhole

Edo won’t vote for candidate with court case, says Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has advised the people to reject any candidate who has a case with the anti-graft body during the election..

Receiving members of the Catholic Women Organisation, Benin Diocese, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Benin City, the state capital, Oshiomhole said: “ Politics is now a business where even evil doers will call themselves pastors. And once they say you are a pastor, the unsuspecting person will think this must be a man of God. Yet, he is a man of evil.

“Now, it will require you as mothers to try to enlighten women to look critically at the pedigree of people who are seeking votes, because a he-goat is never going to be able to deliver a baby no matter how fat it seems to look. And a lizard will only give birth to another lizard.”

The governor added: “As we speak, more candidates are emerging. It is very interesting to see some political parties nominating people who have confessed to stealing public funds, who went to the bank to collect seven hundred million naira that was meant for defence;  to protect Christians who were being killed by Boko Haram. Money that was meant to protect them was stolen by these people. At least, they confessed to seven hundred.

“There are many more they collected under the table, but this one, God caught them because they collected it from the bank, and they couldn’t deny it because the bank documents are there. Even people like that are offering themselves for election. They were not in government; they were stealing government money, when they take charge of the treasury what will be left?”

Oshiomhole urged the women to educate the people to vote wisely in the interest of democracy.

He said: “We need massive education. As mothers, nobody has a greater stake in the future of our state than yourselves because, if the state grows and prospers and government is properly run, you will benefit and the children will benefit. If the government is mismanaged, again if the children are hungry, it is the mother they will descend on.”

He added:, “So, we will solicit your support, obviously we need it now for the next election because they say success without a worthy successor is a failure, because it is easier to destroy a house than to build it. Anybody can destroy, but it is not everybody that can build. And unfortunately, when electioneering starts because of the level of poverty in our country, even thieves will masquerade as angels, and they will be smooth talkers, and can confuse people.”

The President of Catholic Women Organisation, Lady Gloria Ngozi Anaedo, the group was in the Government House to express appreciation to Oshiomhole for his unparalleled infrastructural development. She congratulated the governor for the the success of the party primary that produced Godwin Obaseki as the flag bearer of the ruling party.

She said: “On behalf of Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), Benin Arch Diocese, we have come to appreciate you for the work you have been doing in Edo State. We have been watching with keen interest as the year is passing by, and we are proud. You know, we women, when I child is doing well, we are always happy.

“So, we have come specially to tell you thank you, our Comrade Governor, that you have never let us down, mostly the catholic family. We have searched through and we have to confirm to you to tell you that you have done well. And really, you have done well because what you have done in Edo State is not a paper work. It is something you go, you see. The health care is there. The road network, in fact, we quite appreciate you.

“We cannot mention them because they are so many. So are very proud of you. In education, you have attained more than one hundred percent, and so many areas. So, we the catholic women, we deem it fit to come and say, well done, our comrade Governor. You have done what has not been thought of anybody in Edo State, and God will continue to guide and protect you.”

Anaedo added: “We also have to tell you that we are solidly behind you. Any time any day, we, the Catholic women, are solidly behind you. Any time you call on us for anything, don’t be afraid, we will come out to help you to do whatever you send us to do.”

  • Artistes back UPP candidate

Edo artistes, under the aegis of Edo Artistes Association of Nigeria (EAAN), have endorsed the United Progressive Party (UPP) flag bearer, Adviser Shedrack Nowamagbe, as the next governor of Edo State.

Nowamagbe, a musician and social critic, was elected as the candidate during the party’s primary.

Party memberrs hailed the exercise, saying that it was free, fair and credible. No fewer than  400 delegates participated at the primary.    The artistes gave their endorsement at a party organised to honour Nowamagbe.

The President of the association, Mr. West Osasuyi, said members  endorsed Nowamagbe because the previous administrations in the state abandoned the entertainment industry.

Osasuyi said the industry has played an important role in the political and democratic development of the state.

  • ‘No to ‘unsellable’ candidate’

The member representing Akoko South East/Akoko South West in the House of Representatives, Babatunde Kolawole, has advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State to pick a “sellable” governorship candidate.

The lawmaker warned that the party must not allow an aspirant, who cannot win his polling unit to emerge as the candidate.

Kolawole spoke at the inauguration of 22 block market stalls in Ayepe, Iwaro-Oka, Akoko South West Local Government Area.

At the event, which was attended by the senator representing Ondo North, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, the lawmaker empowered 70 senior citizens from three wards in his constituency with N5000 monthly stipend.

Kolawole said the party should look for someone who has structures in the 18 local governments and who will be accepted by the electorate.

“We are aware that the economy status of our dear state is  stagnant. Nothing is working. Workers are owed. Traders, artisans, motorcyclists are under the bondage of heavy taxation.

“Our people are yearning for change and they believe that it is only APC that can rescue them.

“In APC, we must ensure we get it right in our primary election by ensuring that an aspirant who will be widely accepted  emerges and not someone who cannot deliver his polling unit for the party.”

  • Oshiomhole can’t impose candidate, says Akenzua

Oshiomhole can’t impose candidate, says Akenzua

Prince Edun Akenzua, the Enogie of  Obazuwa, Benin Kingdom, spoke with BEN OGBEMUDIA on the political situation in Edo State, zoning and the succession battle in the Southsouth state.

What is your  reaction to Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s move to support a governorship aspirant as candidate of the APC in Edo State?

As a member of the Benin Leaders of Thought, and having been privileged to served as the chairman of that organisation, we have heard since last year that the governor has a preferred candidate. We discussed it as a rumour . I was mandated as the chairman  to seek audience with the governor to get a subpoena on it. We don’t believe the  governor will want to do what they are saying. We don’t believe because we don’t like godfatherism. The governor came to do his part . He didn’t like godfatherism . He said it everyday openly and since 2005, we have been fighting this kind of thing, until 2008 when he joined in. When people start talking, we wouldn’t believe because this kind of man who has been fighting this kind of thing. We heard it, but it is a rumour.

Have you confirmed from the governor?

Unfortunately throughout last year, from October to December, I wasn’t able to get his audience. Nevertheless, we will not act on what we consider a rumour, until he confirms the rumour. Politicians say a lot of things concerning themselves in a period like this. We will see the governor and confirm from him first to know if it is true or false.

    You have confirmed from him?

We have. We wrote letters to Benin people because we want the proper person to succeed the governor. The Nine persons who showed interest for the gubernatorial race who honoured the letter by coming to us were surprisingly APC aspirantswho we screened because we want a proper person to succeed the governor. And a person was handed the results who would present it to the governor, before it is made public.

    How soon?

As soon as the governor acknowledges our appointment that has been booked. Even, at a recent meeting, I presented another letter to him and he said it will be duly considered.

What if it turns out that the governor’s move to impose is true?

We hope to find out and know whoever is going to succeed him. I think we have to look beyond political interest and look for somebody that is competent. And since we are expecting him to be a Benin person, he must be someone we can be proud of at the end of the day, not one we will be ashamed of that he didn’t perform. So, because of that now, it is hypothetical. I will not answer that until we find out.

What is your advice to others as it is only one political party that showed up for the exercise?

It is all the same. Political parties will do their own. They are all going to the primaries. We will have our reports. We will see what happens when the general elections come up. The governor has done a lot for the state and it will be shameful, if the person coming cannot maintain the pace of the governor. It is also in the interest of the powers that be because whoever wins the primary will be supported by the Benin people. Edo cannot afford to be in the opposition. It was a miracle that Oshiomhole survived the period. We are lucky to have the APC at the federal and state levels and we must take advantage of it.

Recently, you organisation met with Fulani herdsmen and farmers over the incessant killings and rape…

I would say it was fruitful and I think it was very thoughtful for the governor to have summoned that kind of meeting. Herdsmen were represented, farmers were represented and the security people were also represented. Those present, including traditional rulers, agreed that there was need for co-existence between the two groups. The farmers who do the farms and the herdsmen who move the cattle, they need each other. So, that was the essence of the meeting and there was no doubt that the problems are there. Problems of killings, raping of women, rustling of cattle’s, killing of cows, problems of destroying the farms. There have been problems on both fronts. And what the governor wanted was the solution. It was decided that there will be committees in each local government, and another one at the state level, where farmers, herdsmen will be at peace because we need the famers and we need the herdsmen. The committees have not been set up yet, but the governor is going to direct the local government chairmen to establish these committees in their local government.

Are communal clashes and killings in Edo South over landed property not alarming to the traditional rulers? council?

It worries everybody; it worries the traditional institution. Benin has been known to be a very peaceful place long time ago. But ,the problem of community the development association that they are doing all over the place, I believe, is the cause of this upheaval in Benin. Before these things came up, there was the plot allotment committee set up by the Oba and plots where allocated. You could buy a piece of land, 50 by 50, and you would be in Lagos or wherever and you will be sending N5,000 or ten thousand naira to your parents or friends to help you mould block to build one small thing and it will be there for ten years or more and nothing will happen to it. But now, villages are being burnt, properties are being destroyed. I have watch people are being killed because of this development. And I think there is a misunderstanding about the purpose of this community development association set up by Babangida and the idea was for it to function as a co-operative society, whose members would mobilise their friends from wherever and to identify developments in that locality. ln the olden days, here in Benin, we used to have it. A community will levy members to raise some funds and when they have up to fifty thousand, at that time it was in pounds, They took it to the council and tell the chairman we have 50 thousand pounds; we want you to add some money to it to help us build a school or community town hall in our community.

That was what it was for then. It was not put together to sell the lands to generate money. Babangida did not expect when he was doing that kind of thing that the Community Development Association he was proposing, members will be selling lands to find money to develop that community. The CDA was not supposed to develop that community. Because development of that community belongs to the council and the state government. For the CDA, it will be easier for Oba or government to listen to a group of people asking for whatever than to listen to an individual. So, that was the idea. If you have this kind of group, they can now identify what they can do in their place, if they have some friends and relatives abroad who are wealthy and well to do. They can beckon on them to come and do something at home. That was it. The royal family is quite worried about this; not only the traditional institution. The people, generally, are worried.
