I’ve not endorsed any presidential candidate, says Akiolu

Lagos monarch Oba Rilwanu Akiolu has said he has not endorsed any presidential candidate.

Oba Akiolu spoke yesterday at the inauguration of four Nigerian Navy ships by President Goodluck Jonathan at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island.

He dismissed speculations that he endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.

“Who gave you that rumour? Who said so? Some of the things they are writing, like that former Minister Obanikoro, I went to his mother that she should warn him. For the presidency, I support the best person.

“If I want to do something I do not pretend. Allah will give the presidency to the person Nigerians want.”

The monarch used the opportunity to reiterate his support for the candidature of APC’s Akinwunmi Ambode for Lagos governor, adding that he acted in God’s wisdom in picking Ambode.

“I have my reason for saying it and I do not hide it. I acted in God’s wisdom and picked Ambode and by the grace of God, he will be the governor of this state.”

The monarch took a swipe at former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Minister of State for Defence Musiliu Obanikoro, accusing the former of crying foul.

He praised the President for the new acquisition, adding that “the very energy which God gave them to do this, they should do many other things for the country so that all will be well with us.”

Akiolu who said the Dockyard, a large area of land, was collected from a family in the colonial days without compensation, urged the Federal Government to do something to solve the inherited problem.

On election postponement, he said the reason given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was acceptable, adding that he was hopeful that the elections will hold on March 28 and April 11.

He said: “The President and INEC have told us that the elections will take place and I hope by the grace of God, it will be like that. For the time being, the intent and purposes for the postponement is acceptable.

“It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure we have free, fair, credible and acceptable general elections.

“God gives leadership to whomever he wants. When the time comes, no human being can stop it. So many things are going wrong in this country now. Some people do not want to say the truth but it is the truth that will liberate us and may God give us all long life so that we will see.”

The monarch lambasted Obasanjo for the pains he caused Lagos State between 1999 and 2007 when he was president, adding that “God gives many people long live so that they can get enough punishment, like what is happening now”.

  • ‘Nasko is best candidate to succeed Aliyu’

Niger State Commissioner for Information, Danladi Ndayebo, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Umar Mohammed Nasko, is the best man to succeed Governor Babangida Aliyu.

The commissioner noted that since Nasko had worked under Aliyu for two terms of eight years, he had been well groomed to tackle the state’s challenges.

He said: “Nasko has gone through the rudiments of grassroots politics – from being an aspirant for the position of a local government chairman and as commissioner in four ministries.

“His crowning glory is as Chief of Staff to Governor Aliyu. So, I have no doubt that he possesses the key to confront the nagging problems confronting the state.”

Ndayebo said he was confident that Nasko would build on the achievements of the current administration in all critical sectors, especially in Education, Agriculture, Health care delivery, Infrastructure and Job creation.

The commissioner said much work had been done by successive PDP administrations, adding that the continuity and consistency in the implementation of its policies and programmes could take the Power State to the Promised Land.

APC candidate to students: vote out PDP leaders

The chances of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Delta State, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, has received a boost with students of various higher institutions endorsing his candidacy.

The students, who described the technocrat and businessman as the best candidate to manage the affairs of the state, vowed to support him.

Emerhor hailed the students for their bold step and urged youths to take their destiny in their hands and kick out bad leaders who have bogged down the progress of the country since the inception of democracy.

The APC standard bearer said previous governments of the ruling PDP were bereft of ideas on how to aspeed up development.

Emerhor  promised to build new industries and revive all the moribund industries in state, stressing that having succeeded in the business world, he would bring his expertise to tackle unemployment through systematic planning.

He promised to set aside special funds that would be used to promote entertainment and sports, lamenting that millions of young talents in the country have gone down the drain because of government’s failure to support their dreams.

Emerhor promised to build new and standard hostels equipped with modern facilities to ensure that they are comfortable and suitably motivated to pursue their academic dreams and maximise their potentials.

The APC candidate said that if voted into power he will partner with private sectors to ensure that education is accessible to all Nigerian children, stressing that education is the bedrock of any developed nation.

Emerhor  urged youths to use their vibrancy to vote for a candidate that will secure their future and not for those that that will make life miserable for them.

He hailed the leadership of the various Student Union Governments for coming up with the laudable idea of interaction, noting that the choice they have made, was a sign that they were ready  to take their destinies in their hand.

The turnaround expert reminded the students that the ruling party has led them astray for the past 16 years and that it was time for them  to stand up and kick out bad government from the state. He added that they can only do that by collecting their permanent voters cards because it is their power to make the desired change that everybody is clamoring for.

  • One more letter to candidate Buhari

Dear, Gen. Buhari, I feel duty-bound to write this one more letter to you before the presidential election which is due in only two weeks. My hopes and fears for Nigeria compel me.

You and I can remember that our Nigeria at independence was taking strong steps towards success, prosperity and greatness in the world. Since then, it has slumped and relentlessly declined. And now that we are senior citizens, our country has reached an absolute bottom – with fears that it can implode and disappear. Because I see that your chances of winning this election are good, I believe I have a duty to speak to you.

Honestly, I must say that, ordinarily, I should not be speaking like this to a Nigerian leader from the North. By the time I came into Nigeria’s politics in the 1970s, I had studied and taught African and Nigerian history in universities for years, I had travelled extensively in Africa, and I was well informed about the reasons why Nigeria was declining. Of the man-made factors in those reasons, the most potent was the deliberate design of our northern controllers of federal power at independence to use all and every means to make their own nationality dominant over Nigeria so as to rule Nigeria forever. By the mid-1970s, that design had produced an agenda for using federal public money to corrupt, emasculate and subdue the elites from all parts of Nigeria. I served in the leadership group of the UPN and in the Senate during the Shagari presidency, and I watched this agenda as it virulently weakened other political parties in the National Assembly, fomented division and discord in many state governments, and ultimately destabilized many state governments. I watched it as it inculcated unbridled greed and corruption into our country’s politics and public service – and as it gradually destroyed the moral foundations of our country.

But, in spite of all this, I must, in duty, talk to you. All things about you considered, I believe that you are different in a way that is good for our country; I believe that, in spite of your origin, ethnicity and religion, you are very able to envision, independently, a clear picture of what you believe to be right for our country, and you are exceptionally able to follow what you believe to be right. Very few human beings, coming from your background in 1983, would have dared to take the steps which you took on December 31 of that year – namely, to shut down the Shagari presidency, and to tell the world that you had done it in order to save the ordinary citizens of Nigeria from a boundless corruption that was bringing poverty, suffering and sadness into their lives. Of course, when you hounded into prison folks like me, Chief Ajasin, Chief Fasoranti, Alhaji Jakande, Chief Bola Ige and others who had been fighting the corruption in our own ways before you came, I thought you were confused and I despised you.  But even in prison, I could not help wondering that a leading Fulani person had dared to pull down the system of government by corruption which his own people had very adroitly choreographed.  I could not help admiring your guts.

Out of prison some months later, and back to my task of studying the affairs of my country, I was not surprised that many among the northern elite (your own people) regarded you as a traitor and an enemy. Many of such persons still regard you as a traitor, rebel, and enemy today – and Nigeria has been hearing trenchantly from some of them in recent weeks. But, happily, in the same vein, the masses of the common people of the North see you as a friend who can revamp their country, and who can give them a chance to share in the prosperity that you can usher in for Nigeria. The pauperized masses of the South share the same enthusiasm for you, and the same hope in you. It is therefore on behalf of these poor masses of Nigerians in all regions of Nigeria that I hereby offer you the following thoughts.

First, I know you will fight corruption. Be assured that you will enjoy very strong support as you do it. But, please be aware that subduing corruption per se would be no more than only a Pyrrhic victory. After you leave the presidency, if the presidency still controls all the limitless powers it controls today, with the limitless financial resources, and the limitless freedom to access the finances, your successor can simply revive the corruption. Remember that after Babangida replaced you in 1985, he simply revived and enhanced corruption – and even constructed corruption into an avowed system of governance.

Secondly, therefore, you must lead our country towards appropriately restructuring our federation. I am aware that some of your most eminent Arewa kinsmen want the federation to remain in its present form, with the federal government controlling all powers and resources, with states too impotent to achieve meaningful development, with the federal government able to barge disruptively  and obstructively  into any state, with the states operating as clients of the federal overlord, and with controllers of federal power presuming that it is their right to decide election results all over Nigeria and to enthrone persons of their choice in all states. Essentially, what we now have is not federalism at all. Restructuring it should have three objectives – to affirm respect for, and promote harmony among, our indigenous nationalities; to establish strong and development-capable states; and to ensure a federal government competently managing the commanding heights of our country’s economy, defending our country, and managing our country’s relations in the world. I believe that even against your own kinsmen’s objection, you have the strength of character to do this. That strength of character, I repeat, is what is now endearing you to very many Nigerians.

Thirdly, you must lead us to redirect and enrich our economy – by developing dependable infrastructures; and by investing in our common people to build a strong modern economy (through expansion and improvement of education, modern job-related skills, entrepreneurial, small-business, and modern farming development progammes, and promotion of export orientation). As I have written before in this column, we can learn a lot from a small country like Singapore. This expanding economy will nurture a strong modern labour force, create businesses, expand employment, de-emphasize our people’s dependence on politics as a means of livelihood, rapidly increase efficiency, decrease poverty, and systematically help to banish public corruption.

Fourthly, you must lead us to review our governmental system. Our present presidential system, with presidents and governors seeing themselves as dictators, has been a disaster. It is one of the reasons why impunity and corruption have grown so strong in our country. We need to return to the parliamentary system with its principle of shared responsibilities at the top of government. We need to infuse discipline and respect for laws into our politics and governance. And we need to infuse integrity into every department and position in our governments.

In summary, the masses of our people are saying that they hope you can recreate Nigeria for them (and downsize the political barons and kleptocrats). Will you fulfil their hopes?

  • ‘Ambode is candidate of Ikorodu Division’

‘Ambode is candidate of Ikorodu Division’

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikorodu Division have dissociated themselves from a media report linking them with the endorsement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the February 28 election. Rising from a meeting in Ikorodu, the leaders, led by Prince Abiodun Ogunleye and Asiwaju Olorunfunmi Basorun, reiterated their support for the APC governorship candidate, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode.

Our attention has been drawn to information making the rounds in Ikorodu and, indeed, the whole of Lagos State, that the Ikorodu people under the aegis of a body called ‘Eminent Persons of Ikorodu Division’ (EPID) have decided to vote for Mr. Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Governor of Lagos State in the February 28, 2015 Gubernatorial Election because he is an indigene of Ikorodu.  This position is faulted and rejected on many grounds.

First, to the best of our knowledge, Jimi Agbaje is not an indigene of Ikorodu Division: he had in 2007 publicly declared himself as a family member of the Onilegbale Family of Lagos and therefore an indigene of Lagos Division.  Jimi Agbaje has never been part of any cultural activities (e.g. Ikorodu Oga Day, Igbogbo Day, Ajede Luwasa Day, Imota Ayayo Day), social or local organisation in Ikorodu Division. Even when Conference of Leaders of Ikorodu Division (COLID) invited indigenes in 2007 to make a choice among the contestants for Lagos State governorship, Jimi Agbaje did not identify himself with the Division. Mr. Owolabi Salis, an indigene of Ikorodu Division, was picked for the support; and Jimi Agbaje contested the governorship election under the DPA. Thirdly, and most importantly, the EPID, being a socio-cultural organisation, does not have the locus to make such a wild and far-reaching declaration on behalf of the good people of Ikorodu Division.

We, leaders and members of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ikorodu Division, totally condemn and dissociate ourselves from the declaration.

The Ikorodu people have since the 1950s under the able leadership of late Elder Ladipo Amos, Alhaji R. A. Allison, Chief S. O. Gbadamosi, Chief Femi Alokolaro, Justice M. A. O. Abiru, to mention just a few, been voting for progressive parties, viz the Action Group (AG), the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Alliance for Democracy AD), the Action Congress (AC) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The latest progressive party is All Progressives Congress (APC) which our people have embraced and for which they would vote in the coming General Elections.  It is on record that in the 2011 Governorship election Ikorodu Division returned 88,311 votes for ACN while PDP had only 18,373 votes.

For avoidance of doubt, the governorship candidate, which the Ikorodu delegates voted for overwhelmingly at the APC primary on December 4, 2014 and who won, is Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.  He is the candidate all our leaders and members are working tirelessly to get elected as the next governor of Lagos State to succeed our indefatigable Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN.

We hereby call on the people of Ikorodu Division to vote massively for APC Governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on February 28, 2015 as the next Governor of Lagos State, and reject Mr. Jimi Agbaje who is alien to both the position of governor and our Division.  We also charge our people to turn out in large number to vote for our Presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR; Senatorial candidate, Senator Gbenga Ashafa; House of Representatives candidate, Barrister Jimi Benson; Lagos State House of Assembly candidates for Constituencies I and II, Hon. S. O. B. Agunbiade and Alhaji Nurudeen Saka Solaja, respectively during the February 2015 General Elections.

This is the payback period for Ikorodu people: to show appreciation for a Government that has done so much to impact on the lives of its people in terms of projects in all sectors – Education, Health, Judiciary, Roads (urban and rural),and social services. A new ultra-modern High/Magistrate Court complex, new block for maternal/child care at the General Hospital, Ipakodo Mega Jetty, two skill acquisition centres, Imota Asphalt Plant, Mile 12 to Ikorodu round-about six-lane expressway, gigantic Housing Estate at Igbogbo and Imota Rice Mill are highlights of massive developmental projects that have been extended to Ikorodu Division.  A comprehensive list detailing both rural and urban projects attached to this address leaves no one in doubt that it pays to belong to and vote always for a PROGRESSIVE PARTY. Ikorodu should vote for APC in the February 2015 General Elections and continue to vote for the party in all future elections.

  • Lagos APC condemns attack on candidate’s campaign office

Lagos APC condemns attack on candidate’s campaign office

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday condemned an alleged attack on its senatorial candidate for Lagos West, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (aka Yayi).

The Ikeja campaign office of Adeola, a member of the House of Representatives seeking election into the Senate, was allegedly attacked at the weekend by suspected Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hoodlums.

The thugs shot into the air to scare away people. They were also said to have vandalised the rear windshield of a Toyota Land Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to the APC candidate.

The party’s state spokesman, Joe Igbokwe, urged security agencies to stop hoodlums and desperate politicians from throwing the Centre of Excellence into a crisis.

In a statement yesterday in Lagos, Igbokwe alleged that the attackers damaged other property within the complex.

The statement reads: “We have witnessed this awful display of impunity and lawlessness when PDP thugs and supporters attacked APC faithful in Agege and shot dead a member of our party.

“The other day at Mosan Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA), grassroots supporters of our governorship candidate, Akinwunmi Ambode, who were on a door-to-door campaigns, were attacked; over 10 vehicles were damaged and many people were injured.

“The latest attack on our candidate, Yayi and his supporters in his office is yet another assault that needs to be investigated and the culprits brought to justice.”

Igbokwe urged the police to investigate PDP’s senatorial candidate, Segun Adewale’s role in the alleged attack because he had reportedly admitted visiting Adeola’s campaign office to complain about the removal of his campaign materials.

Igbokwe said: “The questions we are asking are: What on earth is driving this frightening impunity being exhibited by the PDP in Lagos? What on earth would make Adewale to muster the temerity and audacity to lead gunmen, including the police, to Yayi’s office without caring a hoot? Who is beating the drums for the PDP in Lagos? What are the police doing? Is it only the PDP that has a monopoly of violence here in Lagos? What does PDP want in Lagos?

“APC may be compelled to defend and protect its teeming supporters, if the police and other security agencies cannot guarantee the security of life and property at a time as this.

“The party is asking smart and courageous Lagosians to use their phones and cameras to record such open blatant display of lawlessness and brigandage to track down these horrible offenders.

“We appeal to Lagosians, especially our teeming supporters, to remain calm and courageous in the face of the provocation. Crushing defeat is staring the PDP in the face all over Nigeria and Lagos. This desperation is understandable. The PDP cannot go down without a fight; they may decide to pull down the house. We must not allow them to do so.”

  • I did well in Senate, says PDP candidate Folarin

I did well in Senate, says PDP candidate Folarin

Oyo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Senator Teslim Folarin has described his scorecard at the Senate as commendable.

The PDP candidate said he did not believe in making a show of his projects because they were built with the government’s money.

He said the projects were the right of his constituents.

Folarin addressed reporters yesterday in his Ibadan home.

The PDP candidate urged Oyo State residents to vote for the party in this month’s general elections to enable them enjoy dividends of democracy.

The former Senate Leader said he facilitated the construction of a comprehensive hospital at Olode and Pade, in Egbeda Local Government Area.

He said the hospitals were well equipped, adding that the state government had not maintained it well.

Folarin said besides the hospitals, 7.5 kilometres of road was tarred in Sanusi Ishola to link Oyo and Ogbomoso road through his influence.

The senator said he facilitated the construction of many other roads in that community, including the Awe-Ilora road and the Olubadan-Gbagi-Monatan expressway, which links Iwo Road and Olode in Ibadan area.

Folarin said he built many classrooms in his constituency, adding that the projects were on ground for the people to verify.

The PDP candidate said over 100 communities enjoyed his boreholes and over 52 communities also benefited from his electrification project.

He said he donated 500KVA transformers to 15 communities and tarred many roads and fitted them with streetlights in Egbeda Local Government Area.

Folarin said he built classrooms in the 11 local government area under his constituency and gave bursary to some students.

He said: “I did a lot of projects when I was in the Senate. The state government does not have the kinds of hospital we influenced here.

“Olode used to be a remote area without a health centre before we facilitated a comprehensive hospital there. Pade is a village of a former governor. Another hospital was also cited there with full facilities. Go and confirm these.”

  • Students disown Kwara PDP candidate Ajibola

The National Association of Ekiti Kwara Students and the Ekiti Local Government Area’s chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) have disowned the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) governorship candidate, Sen. Simeon Ajibola.

The students’ group told reporters yesterday in Ilorin, the state capital, that they took the decision because Ajibola had not affected their lives as students or youths.

They also accused the senator representing Kwara South in the National Assembly of not sponsoring a Bill in his 12 years at the Senate.

Adeniyi Daramola, who spoke for the two groups, said the senator had never attracted any befitting project to the district.

The spokesman said the PDP candidate only patronised the Millennium Development Goals (MDAs) for contracts.

He said the little projects he credited to himself with were poorly executed and carried out by his company, which allegedly served as the project consultant.

Daramola said: “We are embarrassed by imaginary projects adorning posters, billboards, print, electronic and social media …which Kwara South people cannot see.

“We hereby disown Sen. Simeon Ajibola for denigrating the good people of Ekiti Local Government Area for misrepresentation and going against the collective wish of our people.

“In fact, to show the disdain he has for our people, the wedding ceremony of his son held in Lagos and Ilorin, instead of his hometown. It would have been an opportunity for his friends to know how unpopular he is at home.

  • ’We ‘ll back presidential candidate with masses-oriented programmes’
