  • ‘We reject imposition of candidates’

The Bariga Local Council Development Area, at the weekend, protested the imposition of candidates by some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to contest the forthcoming Lagos State local government election.

Addressing reporters at the Ward B, Bariga meeting, the Secretary of the Screening Committee, Adesina Kareem said the era of imposition of candidates was gone, noting that only those nominated by the people would contest the election.

He added that the mischievous plan by some leaders of the party who wanted to replace the aspirant that had the highest vote during its shadow election with the unpopular one could undermine its success during election.

He said: “The leaders of Ward B held its primary election for these aspirants; Lateef Isau, Dupe Olusile, Daisi Oshosanya and Muyiwa Ogunnupe. The most popular of the aspirants Oshosanya emerged with the highest votes but some leaders of the party tried to play smart by replacing his name.

“We have said no to this machination, we stand by the party guidelines. APC is supreme to individual leaders and we insist that no more imposition by some leaders who are pursuing narrow agenda..

Kareem explained that since other parties were fielding candidates in the election, it would be a misadventure for the APC to replace a popular candidate with the aspirant that scored the least during its shadow polls.

“We have decided to fight for our political rights by backing the popular candidate. What you are seeing is the beauty of democracy. You can see the celebration on our faces, we are happy because we have moved against imposition. We will never allow such thing to happen in Bariga anymore.

“We want to give the people the opportunity to choose their councillor in a free, fair and democratic manner. We are using this medium to tell the other political parties that the APC will win the poll in Bariga.

“The party is very much united in spite of our slight disagreement with some leaders. We will put this behind us and come out to support our party.

What we have simply done is based on the directives and guidelines of the party.

“According to the guideline, the Ward leaders are supposed to choose councillorship candidates, but the apex leader at the LCDA level subverted the position by trying to impose the person we did not choose.”

  • UTME: JAMB arrests cyber cafe operators for selling information to candidates for N10,000

UTME: JAMB arrests cyber cafe operators for selling information to candidates for N10,000

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) yesterday said it had arrested operators of cyber  cafés for defrauding candidates of the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for N10,000 to access information on their e-mails.

Its Head of Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said this yesterday in a statement issued in Abuja.

He said the operators  deliberately changed the e-mail addresses and passwords of candidates to ensure that messages sent to the candidates by JAMB get to them (operators of cyber cafes) and in turn sell such information.

“We also appeal to candidates not to allow cheats to defraud them as we have arrested cyber cafe operators who changed candidates email addresses and passwords  and ensure that all messages send to candidates get to them and in turn sale such information like examination notification for N10,000.

“It’s our humble expectation that a candidate aspiring to be a student in any tertiary institution should be able to operate an email. All information are send to their email addresses and also on our site for the public use,” he said.

He said the organisation did not post candidates out of their preferred towns as was reported in the media.

“Again we want to reiterate that we did not post any candidate outside his or her town of choice as expressed in their application, contrary to reports in some quarters. Candidates are always allowed to make a choice of examination town while we allocate centres within the examination town chosen by a candidate,” he said.

Fabian hailed the organisation for the successful conduct of the UTME, which began on Saturday across 642 computer based centres (CBT).

He said: “We are happy that the 2017 UTME, which kicked off on Saturday, May 13, has been hitch-free so far and in line with the arrangements put in place for candidates to write the examination without stress.

“All negative speculation of shift, change of schedules etc over the ongoing 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examinations (UTME) are from mischief-makers, who are desperate to create confusion before or during the exams, owing to personal and selfish interests that are detrimental to the development of public examination and education.

“We thank all Nigerians who supported this drive. We promise that we will continue to fine-tune the process for the better. From the reports across the federation, there has not been any major hitch on the ongoing UTME with over 1.7 million registered candidates captured for the examination.”

He advised candidates to check JAMB’s website as well as its official twitter handle for information concerning the conduct of the examination.

  • Candidates confirm receiving UTME examination centres

Candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have confirmed receiving their examination centres as promised by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Some candidates, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja yesterday, said they started getting their centres from Wednesday.

However, a few others said they were yet to get their centres.

The JAMB registrar had promised that all candidates would receive their centres before Saturday.

JAMB registered 1,736, 571 candidates for the 2017 UTME, which is holding in 624 centres nationwide.

The board has advised candidates for the examination taking place on Saturday to check their e-mails for notification of their centres.

JAMB’s Head, Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, gave the advice in an interview with NAN yesterday.

Benjamin said this advice was necessary because some candidates complained of lack of communication less than 72 hours to the exam.

  • Forms go on sale as candidates jostle for posts

As the sale of forms for candidates aiming to make the board of National Sports Federations in the country began on Tuesday, May 2, low-level campaigns have begun among the aspirants.

A visit to some of the federation offices in Lagos yesterday, indicated not many candidates showed up to pick up the forms, while some preferred to download on the Ministry of Youth and Sports website.

One of the candidates, who pleaded anonymity and hoping to lead the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) was sighted in Lagos yesterday with some former athletes trying to get their forms.

According to an official of one of the federations, only few people have come for the forms as most of them now go online to download it alongside the guidelines.

“There have not been many people coming for the forms as most of them prefer to download it online. I think the interest of people has grown on this election and this is good for sports unlike in the past where people showed apathy to the election in sports federations,” the official who pleaded anonymity said.

Already, the federations have submitted the list of their electoral committee to the sports ministry, while the deadline for the submission of forms is Tuesday, May 9.

According to the elections, the board will be made up of representatives from the six geo-political zones across the country as well as one representative each from Athletes’ Representative of the Sport; Institutional Sports Representative; Representative of International Sports body of the Sport; Representative of the National Association of Women in Sports (NAWIS); Representative of National Association of Physical, Health Education, Recreation, Sports and Dance (NAPHER-SD); Philanthropist or an Ex-officio member or Sponsor and Representative of the Technical Bodies of the Sport.

The zonal and national elections have been fixed for May 30 in Abuja with the zonal holding earlier in the day before the national poll.

Lagos Council poll: forum vows to resist imposition of candidates

A group, the forum of Agbado-Oke-Odo Grassroots Association have urged the leaders of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) to organise credible primaries for chairmanship and councillorship aspirants.

The group warned that imposition of candidates may spell doom for the party during the council poll.

In a statement in Lagos, the group said: “We are using this opportunity to appeal to the ruling All Progressive Congress APC to be cautious of who they present as Chairmanship and Councillorship candidates in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA in the forthcoming Council Elections in Lagos State.

“This has become urgent and imperative as a reaction to information making the rounds suggesting that the leadership of the party is considering some former council chairmen for automatic second term tickets.

“We are of the opinion that if such consideration exists at all, it should be based on a readily verifiable record of sterling performance and service to the communities in the course of the initial term of three years of the former chairman.

“We hereby restate with emphasis that such a situation does not arise at all in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA! Most of the previous administrations neither have nothing to justify the resources available to them nor the confidence reposed in them by the electorates who voted them into office to be considered for a second term.

“To the contrary, their tenures were marked by rancorous relationships with all well-meaning individuals and associations such as the Community Development Associations, Grassroots Associations, artisans, market men and women, youth associations and leaders of thought and even their own party at the local level levels. It will be in the best interest of the party to refrain from fielding such candidates.”

The group added: “What we need now that the attention of the state government is focused on some of our communities with the upgrading of some our critical road infrastructure is purposeful governance at the LCDA!

“It will be the only way to significantly complement the efforts of the Ambode Administration and none of the previous elected council chairman had demonstrated the capacity to fit the bill in the course of their earlier opportunities.

“Finally, parties are advised to search critically within their ranks for sellable men of integrity with proven records of service to humanity as leadership in the Local Government should no longer be considered as job for the boys.”

    ‘Oloyede won’t disappoint UTME candidates’

AN umbrella body of over 100 non-governmental organisations, the Forum of Non-Governmental Organisations in Nigeria (FONGON), has expressed confidence in the ability of the Prof. Is-haq Oloyede-led Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) to conduct a credible Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The group, in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, said Oloyede was out to correct the anomalies of the past.

It said the registrar would correct this institutionalised corruption and fraud in the system, through “holistic and painstaking approach”.

The statement by its National Coordinator, Wole Badmus, added that the Oloyede-led JAMB will prove that the postponement of the mock UTME is in the interest of the candidates.

The group sought public support and prayer for the successful conduct of the coming and future examinations.

The statement reads: “Within the short space of period of the JAMB Registrar, many far-reaching measures have been put in place to safeguard the credibility of the UTME. Now, unlike before, all JAMB-approved examination centres are equipped with examination computers and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to track down any form of examination malpractices within and outside the halls. Candidates are, therefore, expected to spend more time to study and adequately prepare for the examination rather than look for leaked questions as cheating in any form will be picked by the CCTV camera while the entire results will be cancelled.”

  • Candidates seek extension of registration deadline

Candidates seek extension of registration deadline

Candidates applying for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have pleaded for extension of registration deadline following what they called”rigorous registration process”.

Many of them, in conjunction with other stakeholders, are now calling for the extension of the examination beyond its February ending deadline.

“I’m tired,’ said one of the candidates at the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)registration centres called Connexion in Iyana Ishashi on Thursday.

“I’ve been coming here since Monday, but the crowd is too much. You can see what is happening today too,” she said pointing to the horde of candidates on cue for registration.

“I arrive on time today but you can see how large the crowd is. If it has taken me a week or two to complete the registration, when will I start reading for the exam?” she asked our reporter rhetorically.

Another candidate, who introduced herself as Ramat, said she would rather go home and come back this week. She hoped the pressure will have reduced.

“I can’t stand this pressure. I am asthmatic and there is so much dust everywhere,” Ramat lamented.

Candidates keep besieging some of the designated JAMB registrations centres every day.

The Nation learnt that after parting with the mandatory N6,200 for the examination form, creating an e-mail and a personal profile on JAMB’s website, only a handful were able to generate the Personal Identification Number (PIN) code due to poor internet service.

However, the stringent but slow process the registration has taken is now making many to wonder if the examination body will meet the deadline for registration.

This development, The Nation learnt, is also creating a friction between JAMB and bank officials over accusations and counter accusations following the slow pace of internet.

A candidate, who visited JAMB registration centre in Festac Town, Lagos, alleged that due to the huge number of candidates, some of the officials connived with bank officials to extort money from frustrated candidates to have them registered on time.

“It is not compulsory (to pay) but many candidates here are doing it because we are all frustrated. If you have to pay N1000 or N2000 to do your registration, is it not better than coming here to waste your precious time every day?” the candidate said.

Lagos council poll: ‘We ‘ll resist imposition of candidates’

All Progressives Congress (APC) members in Lagos State hace urged the party leadership to conduct free and fair primaries for chairmanship and councillorship aspirants to avoid defeat at the local government polls.

They urged the party chairman, Otunba Oladesle Ajomale, to provide a level playing ground for aspirants during the shadow polls.

Aggrieved party members from Ojodu Council chapter complained to reporters in Lagos certain leaders were planning to impose their cronies as chairmanship and councillorship candidates, warning that the move could spell doom for the platform.

There was pandemonium at the meeting of the chapter, following protests by members who alleged plans by some leaders to impose candidates, instead of conducting a credible primary.

In the fraca, the protesters molested the Chairman of the party in the area, Hon. Kelvin Ajakaye, and other leaders. Also, the secretariat of the party was vandalised by party youths. A party chieftain said: “The meeting of the party ended in chaos. The secretariat was attacked by the protestersThe evidence were broken windows, damaged chairs and electronics. Apart from the destruction of the property, some leaders sustained injuries during the free for all fight.”

Party sources said the local government chairman of the party had called the meeting of stakeholders  to deliberate on the proposed elections.

However, broke out when some leaders canvassed consensus option, instead of primary. Aggrieved party members who suspected a foul play complained that the leaders rooting for consensus were projecting a former chairman of the local government.

A source said the crisis would have escalated, but for the prompt intervention of the Area G Police Command, which restored peace to the secretariat’

The source added: “This may be a sign of what is likely to happen, if credible primaries are not conducted in the APC local government chapters. This is a local election. The APC should learn from the lesson of the past when candidates were imposed on the party. Even, the son of the state chairman lost to the candidate of the PDP in Isolo council in the last elections.

“That is why we are appealing to the state chairman to give assurance that the selection process will be democratic and there will be no imposition of candidates. It is in the interest of the APC at the poll.”

  • The candidates, their chances

    The candidates, their chances

AS it stands, pending the time when the Court of Appeal in Abuja will come open with its judgement on Jegede’s suit, it is safe to say there are four Guber hopefuls in the three leading political parties. This is because it is too early to write off either Jimoh Ibrahim or his challenger, Eyitayo Jegede.

Thus a look at the candidates without any of these two at this time may not be comprehensive. For now, although there are more than ten aspirants in the race on the platforms of as much political parties, the race, analytically, is a three horse race among the candidates of the ruling PDP, the opposition APC and the emergent AD.

    Rotimi Akeredolu

Although his candidacy is also being challenged by fellow party man, Olusegun Abraham, on the strength of alleged malpractices and discrepancies during the primary election that returned him, the former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, is not as troubled as his rivals in the ruling party.

Not a few pundits are throwing their weights behind Akeredolu to win the governorship contest. Their prediction is based on certain factors they say make him the man to beat this time around.

The APC candidate, it would be recalled, contested for the same seat in 2012, running against the incumbent Governor, Mimiko, and coincidentally, Oke, in a keenly contested election. Though he lost the race, many applauded Akeredolu’s feat, considering the fact that he was new in the politics of the state back then.

And Akeredolu seems to be very much aware of the permutations of this school of thought, “I can assure you that my chance is very bright. I’m not only assuring you of that but take my word; you will come back to congratulate me after the elections,” he said recently.

Also, Akeredolu, enjoying the supports of heavy weight politicians such as Tayo Alasoadura, Ade Adetimehin, Saka Yusuf Ogunleye and a former House of Representatives member, Ifedayo Abegunde, is expected to do well in the Central Senatorial District during the election.

One of the factors expected to swing votes in favour of the APC candidate is the expectation that the people of Ondo, having enjoyed the dividends of being in the ruling party at the centre with Mimiko’s defection to PDP two years ago, may vote Akeredolu to make them an APC state.

According to Deji Afolabi of Voters’ Right Agenda (VRA), “Ondo people as we speak are no longer comfortable with opposition politics, especially the type being offered by the PDP. The state, being a core progressive state, may decide to go with APC and thereby vote Akeredolu.”

The unending crisis within the PDP at the national level is another reason that may work in favour of Akeredolu. Ondo people may see voting for him as a way to escape the confusion in Mimiko’s current party. That much has been said by even the governor’s aides and political associates in recent times.

He is also expected to be a beneficiary of the Akoko Agenda, a struggle for the governorship by the Akoko people of northern Ondo, which has been popularized across the state for nearly a decade now. Consequently, he is seen as the man to beat in that zone.

Also, growing anger against the Mimiko-led PDP administration may also win votes for Akeredolu across the state. Many voters, according to reports, may decide against the return of the PDP and as such, vote for the opposition APC.

“This is really not about Akeredolu’s ability, it is about the desire of the people to seek a new beginning following what many see as the wasteful era of Mimiko and the ruling PDP,” Afolabi said.

In the view of Victor Adekanye Olabimtan, former Speaker, Ondo State House of Assembly, Mimiko’s lack lustre performance is a blessing for APC.

“Let me say expressly that the past seven years has been harrowing for the good people of Ondo State. I think the people of the state now know better that they have either by error of commission or omission allowed the mistake of 2007 to destroy Ondo State.

“The Ondo State of today is far worse than the Ondo State we had before the February 2009. It is a state that is wallowing in abject poverty. This government inherited a buoyant economy but today, the economy of the state is haemorrhaging and bleeding satanically,” he said.

However, the APC candidate will have to battle against some odds that may militate against his victory at the poll. Chief amongst this is the biting economic situation in the country. Many of the voters are not happy with the APC led federal government and may transfer the aggression to Akeredolu during the election.

“Our people are not fools. We are aware of how APC is ruling Nigeria. I don’t think that is what we want in Ondo” Lere Otitoju, Convener of Ondo New Era, told The Nation.

According to the rights activist, it is impossible for anyone to ignore the effect of the current economic recession on the people when analyzing the Ondo election. “The people don’t live in Mars: they live here in Nigeria and are conscious of what is going on around them. I don’t see how Akeredolu will explain this away,” he said.

Also the infighting within the APC is seen as another reason why Akeredolu may not find the contest easy. This is because many of those who contested the primary election with him are still aggrieved and are not part of his campaign train.

Abraham, for example, continues to insist that APC will lose the election with Akeredolu as its candidate. The party chieftain said the former NBA President cannot mobilise the people of Ondo state for the party.

Aside Abraham, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, another aspirant and frontline APC chieftain in the state, since losing the ticket to Akeredolu, has not been seen to be part of the party’s quest for the governorship seat.

“Abraham, Boroffice and their likes are the real leaders of the APC who will be on ground to canvass votes for the party on election day. The people we see behind Akeredolu today are Abuja people most of who are not even from Ondo State. This is a problem.

“Unless something magical happens to change the disposition of these known and respected APC leaders before the election, there is no way the internal schism in the APC will not affect Akeredolu’s chances,” a party leader said.

    Eyitayo Jegede

In spite of his current travails, Jegede, according to some analysts, is still one of the leading candidates likely to emerge as the Governor of the state. All he needs to move close to the realization of his ambition today, is to have his name on INEC’s list as the candidate of the ruling PDP.

Following his emergence as the winner of the PDP primary election, the former Attorney General and his handlers wasted no time before garnering a new cult following across the state. Making smart use of the Mimiko political structure as well as state apparatus, the Jegede campaign group reached out and succeeded in selling his candidacy as what is needed to ensure the continuation of the Mimiko legacies.

Although he has been a commissioner in the state for a while now, Jegede as an individual is of no political clout in the state. His claim to fame largely depends on his emergence as the preferred candidate of the incumbent Governor, Mimiko.

Thus, one of the things working for him as the election draws closer, is the endorsement of Mimiko and his political family. Given the governor’s known political sagacity, many are cock sure that Jegede will be voted in as the next governor.

Few days back, in spite of rumours that he is already seeking an alternative to Jegede, Mimiko reiterated his belief that his former Attorney General will win the election against all odds.

“Let me repeat what I have said again, the injustice will not stand. Eyitayo Jegede will contest election on the platform of PDP. I’m talking as a leader of PDP in this state and also with what is on the ground in terms of what Eyitayo is bringing on board. I don’t have any doubt in my mind that Eyitayo Jegede will be the next governor of the state,” Mimiko said.

But his greatest asset is also being seen by some people as his main weakness. To some people, the fact that Jegede is the anointed of Mimiko is a problem. “Ondo people just don’t want a governor that will be tele-guided,” a source said.

Following his emergence as candidate, many critics of the Governor have described this as a ploy to fulfil a third term ambition by Mimiko. These, pundits say, may have a negative effect on Jegede’s performance during the November 26 election if he is eventually cleared to contest.

Another issue is the inability of Jegede to campaign well following his disqualification from the race. Many allies of the Governor insist there is a plan to stop him from reaching out to the people as part of plans to prevent his victory at the polls.

“We know Jegede will contest the election. He is the candidate to beat. That is why these people are struggling to stop his campaign. They don’t want him to get to the people and tell them what he has in stock,” an aide of the Governor said.

But Jegede insists that with or without campaigning across the state, he will win the election. According to him, the people are aware of his capabilities and as such, need not be reminded that he is the best man for the job.

    Jimoh Ibrahim

Apart from being rumoured to have a heavy war chest to prosecute the governorship election, Jimoh Ibrahim boasts of little or no political antecedents in Ondo State that may position him to win the next governorship election

Today, Ibrahim’s advantage over Jegede is that his name is on INEC’s list as the PDP candidate. Aside that, many say he is no match politically for the former Attorney General of the state.

More so, his candidature is even being objected to by many of his party men who says, Jegede, and not Ibrahim, is the man they voted for at the primary election. As we speak, not many PDP stalwarts in the state are willing to work for Jimoh Ibrahim’s governorship dream.

Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, Banji Okunomo, said Ibrahim is not the party’s candidate for the November election as nothing will happen to the candidacy of Eyitayo Jegede.

Okunomo urged party supporters to disregard what he called “rampaging distortion of facts and misrepresentations” on the matter by a section of the party.

“We are also in the know of the syndicated report/newsflash which aims to misinform the public as regards the status of the true PDP candidate in the fast approaching gubernatorial election in the state.”

The publicity secretary assured that the party at state and national level, is working to ensure that Jegede’s candidacy remain. “We are therefore enjoined to remain calm, steadfast and resolute pending when the list would be officially released to the public,” Okunomo said.

Aside from the above, Ibrahim is not known to have a political structure that will help him achieve his ambition. This explains why not much has been heard about his campaign efforts ahead of the election.

“While other candidates were already moving across the state campaigning, Ibrahim was just busy recruiting people who will work in his campaign organization.

“His membership of the PDP is more in Abuja than in Ondo State. His entrance into the race is largely as a spoiler recruited by the Modu Sheriff faction of our troubled party,” a former Secretary of the party in the state said.

    Olusola Oke

“Olusola Oke’s best chance to emerge the next governor of Ondo State is as a likely beneficiary of the rumblings between both the PDP and the APC. It will not come as a surprise if voters decide to go for him as a tested hand outside the feuding leading political parties.
