‘Tiny’ Cape Verde complete historic World Cup qualification

Cape Verde have qualified for the World Cup, beating Eswatini 3-0 in their last group match on Monday to top the standings ahead of Cameroon and complete a fairytale campaign.

The wind-swept West African archipelago overcame first-half nerves to win in Praia with second-half goals from Dailon Livramento, Willy Semedo and veteran Stopira and book a first-ever appearance at the finals.

They started two points ahead of Cameroon, whose eight previous World Cup finals appearances are the most by an African country. Cape Verde finished Group D on 23 points, four ahead of Cameroon, who were held at home to a goalless draw by Angola.

Cape Verde rarely played international football some 25 years ago but now head to next year’s finals in North America as one of the nine African representatives.

They join Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria and Ghana who have qualified already.

Livramento took advantage of Eswatini’s failure to clear to steer home the ball from close range three minutes into the second half while Semedo also had a tap-in for the second six minutes later.

Stopira, 37, had only come on as a late substitute as an acknowledgement of his long service with the team since 2008, and put a cherry on the cake with a stoppage-time goal.

The island’s 600,000 inhabitants had been given the day off to support their team but there was little to cheer in a tentative first half before Livramento scored. After that, the celebrations could not be contained.

Cape Verde are the second smallest country to qualify for the World Cup after Iceland, who competed in Russia in 2018.

Cameroon will likely advance to the playoffs for the four best runners-up across the nine African qualifying groups but were jeered off in Yaoundé after failure to beat Angola whose 39-year-old goalkeeper Hugo Marques made several telling stops.

Meanwhile, Tunisia completed their World Cup qualifying campaign without conceding a goal as they beat Namibia 3-0 in their final Group H game.

They ended the campaign unbeaten with nine wins from their 10 games, scoring 22 goals.

A first-half penalty in Tunis converted by Ali El Abdi was followed by second-half strikes from Hannibal Mejbri and captain Ferjani Sassi.

Namibia finished second in the group despite the defeat, their third in the last four qualifiers.

But they do not have enough points to finish as one of the best four group runners-up. They were 13 points adrift of Tunisia, who had already secured their place in the finals.

Liberia finished third in the group after a 1-1 draw at Equatorial Guinea, who were fielding a new-look team and with a new coach after a player strike meant they did not travel for last week’s qualifier in Malawi.

A 62nd -minute penalty from Portuguese-based striker Ronald Lumungo earned Sao Tome e Principe their first points of the campaign as they edged Malawi 1-0.

It ended a run of 18 winless matches for the tiny island nation, who are 195th  in the world rankings.

The federal government on Thursday confirmed the release of six Nigerian tourists who were recently detained in Cape Verde.

Contrary to earlier reports that the tourists were held for entering the country without sufficient funds, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that they were wrongly accused of trafficking, an allegation that was later found to be false.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the women had travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday when they were unjustly detained.

In an official update, Ebienfa stated: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to happily inform that the Nigerian nationals (ladies) that were detained in Cape Verde have all been released and they have left the country too. The Ministry engaged Cape Verde authorities via our Mission in Guinea-Bissau to secure their release. The tourists travelled to Cape Verde for a holiday and were unfortunately detained for allegations of trafficking, which turned out to be false.”

In a statement issued by NiDCOM’s director of media, publicity, and protocol, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, she urged Cape Verdean authorities to treat the women with dignity and facilitate their prompt return to Nigeria via Dakar.

The statement reads: “The attention of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has been drawn to a case of six Nigerian tourists who travelled from Senegal to Cape Verde Island on a vacation. On arrival at Cape Verde, they were pulled out of the line. They were accused of not having enough funds, and their phones were confiscated. They were subsequently locked up in an immigration deportation camp at the airport.

“Reports from the immigration detention centre indicate that they are going through distress and trauma, with one of them having a medical condition without access to his drugs.

“We appeal to the Immigration authorities in Cape Verde to please treat the tourists with respect and dignity and put them on the next immediate return flight to Dakar for onward connection back to Nigeria.

“The families of these young Nigerians, ranging between 25 and 31 years, have been understandably worried about the safety of their children.

“The matter has also been reported to the Consular and Migration directorate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

  • Late penalty takes Cape Verde into historic AFCON Q-Finals

Late penalty takes Cape Verde into historic AFCON Q-Finals

An Africa Cup of Nations knockout tie for the first time in their history  as a late Ryan Mendes penalty gave them a 1-0 victory over Mauritania in the last 16 yesterday.

The match at the Felix Houphouët Boigny Stadium in Abidjan was drifting towards extra time when Cape Verde won a spot-kick and captain Mendes converted with just two minutes of the 90 remaining to break Mauritania’s resistance.

The Blue Sharks then held on through 10 added minutes to advance to a quarter-final on Saturday in Yamoussoukro against either Morocco or South Africa, who meet in the last 16 on Tuesday.

The tiny Atlantic Ocean island nation had got out of their group in two of their three previous appearances at the AFCON, but had never before won a knockout tie.

“We are proud of everything we have done up to now. We always tried to win the game and we thoroughly deserved the victory,” said Cape Verde coach Pedro ‘Bubista’ Brito, who believes his side can go further still in the tournament. “We have our objective, which from day one has been to get to the semi-finals.

“We are one step away from that now and we are going to keep going, while obviously staying humble and respecting our opponents, but we believe. That is our focus and we are going to try and get there.”

Mauritania had been hoping to extend their fine run  at Cote d’Ivoire 2023, after they won a Cup of Nations match for the first time in nine attempts in their last group game, beating Algeria to eliminate one of the continent’s powerhouses.

But a side coached by Amir Abdou, who took tiny Comoros to the last 16 in Cameroon two years ago, will go no further after failing to find a way past Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha.

“Unfortunately we have lost to a ridiculous goal, which showed our naivety,” said Abdou. “But we will nevertheless take positives from this, from our run, and we will be back in a year’s time.”

The Chinguetti Lions will look back with regret at one fine chance just before the hour mark, when Souleymane Anne was played into a great position inside the box only to put his shot over.

Cape Verde looked the more likely team as the minutes ticked down, and Mendes came very close to scoring with a header from a corner that was well saved by Mauritania goalkeeper Babacar Niasse.

They were then awarded a penalty when substitute Gilson Tavares Benchimol was brought down in the box by Niasse after intercepting a poor header back from Mauritania defender Yassin El Welly.

The Egyptian referee pointed to the spot, and Mendes, of Turkish side Fatih Karagumruk, smashed home the penalty, his second goal of the tournament making history for his country.

A statement issued by WHO on Monday said that the number of cases of Zika in Cape Verde was declining.

It will be recalled that the ministry had on March 15, announced the first case of microcephaly.

It said that investigations were underway to determine if this case of microcephaly was linked to Cape Verde’s outbreak of Zika virus.

Among the 7,490 suspected cases of Zika virus reported between Oct. 21, 2015, and March 6, 165 involve pregnant women, from which 44 women have already delivered without any complications or abnormalities.

The statement said that there had been no circulation of the Zika virus on the islands of Sal, São Vicente, Santo Antão, São Nicolau and Brava.

It said that there have been no cases reported on the islands of Boa Vista and Maio since mid-February.

It said that the team included epidemiologists, laboratory experts, maternal health specialists and communication staff who would collaborate with the ministry to evaluate the reported case of microcephaly and gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the outbreak and its impact.

It will also identify potential remaining gaps and to support the country’s response and investigations.

“The team will be building on the work already underway by the health authorities in the country,” WHO said.
