A six-man caretaker committee comprising past chairmen has been appointed to run the affairs of the  Ikorodu branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) due to a failed attempt to hold a fresh election.

The new committee, which has since assumed duty, will function in line with the 2015 NBA uniform bye-laws of the branches pending when issues are resolved and a new election is conducted.

Members of the caretaker committee are: Nurudeen Ogbara, Anthony Kidzu Ebeh,  Olumide Adejumo,  Prince Kazeem Adekunle Adebanjo,  S.O.K. Shillings and Prince Habeeb Adedotun Adetunji.

Their appointment was one of the resolutions passed by the branch during its general meeting on June 12.

The branch was to hold an election on May 23, but it was gathered that the exercise was stopped by the national secretariat of the NBA.

Sources said many of the aspirants and members were not happy with the screening exercise conducted by a committee as they believed it was skewed to favour some particular candidates.

As a result, many of the branch members petitioned the NBA, consequent upon which a team was sent to Ikorodu to stop the election and resolve the issues.

The June 12 meeting was at the instance of the team from the NBA national secretariat.

The former branch Vice Chairman, Prince Adetayo Ladega, acted as the acting chairman while the former Publicity Secretary, Ademola Adenaike acted as the Acting Secretary in the absence of the Chairman and the Secretary at the meeting.

The meeting resolved that the tenure of the present executive committee led by Levi Adakwaone expired  on June 12, having been inaugurated on June 13, 2016 for a single two- year tenure.

It was resolved that the executive committee members must cease to hold office or perform official duties due to the expiration of tenure by effluxion of time from June 12 in line with Article 6 (1), (2) Uniform Bye Law for branches 2015.

They also resolved that as from June 13, no immediate past officer will represent the branch in such official capacity, warning that anyone who flouts the directive will be sanctioned.

In order not to leave the branch in a vacuum, the caretaker committee was constituted, while all past executive committee members were ordered to hand over branch’s properties in their possession to the caretaker committee.

“This development will help in eliminating the continuous dominance of election victory of one political party due to the queue behind syndrome which most times encourage a situation whereby all sorts of person are elected based on the outcome of the presidential election.”

While calling for the scrapping of the state electoral commissions, the PPA boss said the reported manipulation of the  Kano local government elections had only added to the list of frauds perpetrated by state electoral commissions.

He suggested the establishment of an independent national body to conduct council polls or transfer the mandate to INEC.

PDP BoT urges warring parties to withdraw court cases

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged party members who are pursuing court cases against the party to withdraw such cases and embrace reconciliation.

The litigants were advised against involving external forces in the affairs of the party but to find amicable means of settling their differences.

Rising from an enlarged meeting of the BoT, the Concerned Stakeholders group and the Caretaker Committee in Abuja Thursday, the party chieftains expressed concerns over the unity and stability of the party.

They cautioned that ongoing court cases were capable of deepening the festering leadership crisis in the party, adding that trend could adversely affect the health of the party.

In a communique read by Secretary of the BoT, Chief Ojo Maduekwe after the meeting, the party chiefs said the various organs and stakeholders have resolved to respect decisions taken at the party’s May 21 convention held in Port Harcourt.

The meeting recognised the Ahmed Makarfi led Caretaker Committee set up by the convention to run the affairs of the party pending the election of a new set of officials.

  • House orders Suswam to constitute caretaker committee

Benue State House of Assembly has directed Governor Gabriel Suswam to present before it for confirmation a list of local government caretaker committees within three days.

It said if the governor failed to comply, it would invoke Section 21, Sub 5 of the Local Government Law, 2012, by reviewing the tenure of the DGSAs.

However, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Dr. Mathias Byuan, said the House lacks power to order Governor Suswam to constitute a caretaker committee.

Byuan, in a telephone interview with The Nation, said the appointment was not in the purview of the legislative arm  because the executive controls the finance and should be in a better position to know how much it would pay an appointee.

Byuan, an associate of Governor Suswam, berated the lawmakers for the ‘incessant arm-twisting’ of the governor.

He said the governor could not constitute a caretaker committee for local governments two months to the end of his tenure.

Byuan suggested that instead of a caretaker committee, the money for their emolument should be used to pay  civil servants, who are owed salary arrears.

The Assembly described the more than three months’  leadership at the third tier as illegal, saying they are not supposed to stay for more than three months.

It took the decision while ruling on a point of order raised by the member representing Ohimini, Mr. James Ochojila and seconded by Mr. David Iorhemba of Guma Constituency.

In the order, Ochojila condemned the continuous occupation of the councils by the DGSAs, saying it was illegal and needed to be addressed.

This is the second time in 14 days that the House moved against Governor Suswam through a motion.
