Ikeme thanks Oliseh for Eagles’ chance

Wolvehampton Wanderers goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, has expressed his appreciation to former Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, for giving him the chance to play for the country.

However, the shot stopper said he is disappointed to see Oliseh quit his post on Thursday.

“Sad to see Sunday Oliseh resigning. Would like to thank him for all his efforts and giving me the opportunity to represent the Super Eagles,” africanFootball.com quoted Ikeme as saying on his Twitter handle.

The England-born goalkeeper made his Super Eagles debut in September’s African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifier against Tanzania.

He has since established himself as Nigeria’s first -choice goalkeeper after Lille shot stopper, Vincent Enyeama, retired from international football.

CARL IKEME IS THE BEST NIGERIAN GOALKEEPER FOR NOW – AGU

The Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu has defended the invitation of Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme as the best for the Super Eagles.

Though not a regular player in his club, Agu said his response and excellent outing at the National team would make his coach at Wolverhampton take another look at him and as well as other clubs outside England.

“Ikeme is good and the best for now. Even in his club he may not be commanding a regular shirt but I tell you he is good. You have equally watched him in goal for the Super Eagles,” Agu said.

The former Eagles goalkeeper said a good goalkeeper must know when to grab an opportunity which Ikeme did when he was fielded.

“Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Dele Alampasu are good goalkeepers. These three goalkeepers are the best for Nigeria. I submitted their names because I have seen them and also believe in them,” he added.

  • HOW CARL IKEME DAZZLED ON NIGERIA DEBUT

HOW CARL IKEME DAZZLED ON NIGERIA DEBUT

At a time when Nigeria is desperately looking for a new football hero and talking point, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Carl Ikeme has stepped in to fill the vacancy, reports TAIWO ALIMI .

CARL Onuora Ikeme can trace his roots to Onitsha, the most populous city in eastern Nigeria, but the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper has been little known among his countrymen  until now.

That is not a surprise, given the 29-year-old has spent his entire life abroad. Born in Sutton Coldfield, in the West Midlands, Ikeme cut his teeth at Wolves’ academy and progressed to the first-team squad for their 200304 Premier League season.

Back in Nigeria, not many football fans  and there are many  could identify with the career and history of a player whose tongue is completely anglophone. This, despite Nigerians’ love of the Premier League and devotion to its teams.

Clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham, Everton and even Stoke, Bolton, Portsmouth and AFC Wimbledon have remarkable following in Nigeria, either because of their successes or because one or two Nigerian players have passed through or are there. Wolves do not fall into these two categories, leaving Ikeme outside the consciousness of the average football follower. All that changed after the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Tanzania and Nigeria on 5 September this year. Carl Ikeme is now on everyone’s lips.

Ikeme made his debut for the Super Eagles and won the hearts of millions of Nigerians. The game finished goal less and Ikeme was the difference between a point and defeat for the three-time Africa champions as Tanzania’s Taifa Stars played them off the park in Dar es Salaam. At a time when a football-loving nation is desperately looking for a new football hero, Ikeme stepped in to fill the vacancy created by poor international results.

A month ago, when told of his first call-up, the 6ft 3in keeper thought it was a joke. Ikeme was not sure of the validity of the phone call. “I thought someone was winding me up to start with,” he said. “I spoke to the coach and it started to make more sense and I realised it was none of my cousins winding me up or anything like that.”

After the game, he said it was not easy to step into the shoes of Vincent Enyeama, Nigeria’s No1 keeper for 12 years, who missed the Tanzania game due to the death of his mother but probably would not have started anyway.

“Playing in your first game for a team like Nigeria is not easy because there are many expectations that include filling the big shoes left by Vincent Enyeama, who has been amazing for us. I am glad I kept a clean sheet and wish to take time out to thank my team-mates who have been amazing and welcomed me from the moment I arrived.”

Ikeme is discovering more about his ancestry, a good feeling, he says, given the affectionate nature of his people, the taste of the food and the football tradition in Nigeria. “I have settled in well [with the Super Eagles]. My family are from Nigeria and it’s not like I dropped from the moon or something. I try a lot of Nigerian food and I feel very Nigerian.”

It is easy for him to feel this way, given the back slapping and accolades that have come his way since his debut. The former Arsenal and Nigeria forward, Nwankwo Kanu, was dramatic in his assessment of Ikeme after the game: “It is true that we did not win the match but we gained a son.”

Jay Jay Okocha said Nigeria’s search for a keeper to take over from Enyeama had ended. “He was wonderful,” the former Bolton player said of Ikeme. “We finally got the keeper we have been waiting for. We know Enyeama will not be around forever, so it is good that he was discovered now. I wish him well.”

The new Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, was grateful to Ikeme for saving him from serious embarrassment. “I don’t like to single out players from the team but I have to admit that Carl Ikeme had a great game for us. He saved us from defeat.”

Lille’s Enyeama similarly paid tribute. “Ikeme is a good keeper and I have to give him credit for the draw in Dares Salaam.”

Ikeme also started Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Niger and has been named in the squad for a friendly against Benin Republic in a fortnight, in preparation for the next Africa Cup qualifier, against Egypt. He will not allow the accolades to affect him.

“I hope to continue from where I left off if given the chance,” he said. “All I can say is it was indeed a great feeling putting on that jersey for Nigeria and a dream come true for me. The team is young so we can expect better results as we go along.”

Ikeme saves Eagles in Dar es Salaam

TANZANIA’S Taifa Stars produced a stunning second half performance but failed to do enough to stun three-time African champions, Nigeria on match day two of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying.

Yesterday’s game at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam which finished 0-0 was Sunday Oliseh’s first after he replaced former coach, Stephen Keshi and he opted to hand 29-year-old goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme his competitive debut in place of Vincent Enyeama who asked to be excused from the tie following the death of his mother.

It turned out to be a master stroke as the Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper made no less than six stunning saves to prevent the Eagles from suffering a humiliating defeat.

FSV Mainz defender, Leon Balogun failed to recover from an ankle injury and was subsequently replaced by Solomon Kwambe.

William Troost-Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo and Kingsley Madu were the other defenders handed starts against the Taifa Stars.

Obiora Nwankwo started ahead of the back four while Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon and Emmanuel Emenike started in more advanced positions ahead of midfielders, Izunna Uzochukwu and Lukman Haruna.

Nigeria threatened early on through Simon on the left but he was fouled as he raced past a defender and honed in on goal. He took the subsequent free kick himself but Emenike headed wildly from four yards.

The hosts then took control and Carl Ikeme had to be at his brilliant best in the 13th and 22nd minutes to keep the score line even.

His first save off an Mbwana Samata effort was particularly impressive as the Taifa Stars continued to show they were anything but intimidated by the storied credentials of their opponents.

The Super Eagles looked sluggish and lacking in co-ordination and Oliseh responded by substituting Haruna after just 35 minutes with striker, Sylvester Igboun taking the Anzhi man’s place and earning his debut as a result.

The hosts however continued to create the more dangerous openings with TP Mazembe man, Thomas Ulimwengu particularly outstanding.

Ahmed Musa’s free kick from range in the 24th minute represented Nigeria’s only effort on target in the half and the visitors knew they were lucky to still be on level terms at the break.

The Super Eagles started on the front foot in the second half and Emenike threatened from range in the 48th minute.

Musa’s pace continued to cause the hosts problems down the right hand channel and he burst through on 57 minutes only to be let down by an atrocious final touch.

Tanzania should have scored on the hour but Ikeme produced a save that defied logic to deny Ulimwengu from point blank range.

Oliseh responded by throwing on Werder Bremen attacker, Anthony Ujah for the tiring Emenike as Nigeria looked to rev the engine. It was the Taifa Stars that however came close to scoring the game’s first goal through Mrisho Ngassa, five minutes later but he managed to head wide when left unmarked from five yards.

Ulimwengu almost scored two minutes after Ngassa’s shocking miss but his low angled drive was impressively kept out by the exemplary Ikeme.

The Tanzanians dominated the rest of the half but were left to contemplate what might have been largely due to the brilliance of Ikeme. The point means Nigeria are still undefeated after the first two rounds of matches and now leapfrog Egypt as the new leaders of Group G. The Super Eagles have now amassed four points following their 2-0 win over Chad on match day one.

Egypt will overtake however overtake Nigeria at the summit of the standings if they defeat Chad on Sunday at Stade Omnisports Idriss Mahamat Ouya, N’Djamena.

Nigeria: Carl Ikeme; Solomon Kwambe, Kingsley Madu, William-Troost Ekong, Kenneth Omeruo, Nwankwo Obiora, Haruna Lukman (Sylvester Igboun), Moses Simon (Emem Eduok 70′), Ahmed Musa, Izunna Uzochukwu, Emmanuel Emenike (Anthony Ujah 61′)
