    * rubbishes prison injury report

Argentina international and Boca Juniors forward Carlos Tevez has thrown pebbles on media report indicating that he was injured while playing football in Prison. The report which had gone viral said the 34 year old was hurt while participating in a short time football action while visiting a relative in prison, but the former Manchester City star has dismissed the report describing it as a concussion by those in the habit of talking carelessly.

Tevez, who remains hopeful that he will be considered for selection for the world cup where Argentina will square up against Nigeria, Iceland and Croatia, said he was instead injured while training in the gym.

“Doing strength work at the gym last Wednesday morning, on the machine I felt a great pain in my calf,” Tevez said to TyC Sports.

“On Friday, I used the kinesio [adhesive tape] waiting for progression. And since I did not see any, I had tests. There the stretch appeared.

“I do not know why some people do not believe me. If I had not been injured at the gym, I would not be so stupid to say I was injured here.

“But as I’m telling you, they begin to speculate about golf or jail. Sometimes they do not know if they talk bulls*** or not, but I always tell the truth, whether it’s politically correct or not.

“I will not be such an idiot to expose myself to go to jail. That they talk so much bulls*** hurts and makes me stronger, because I have to keep evolving. It’s time to shut up and deliver everything on the field.”

Tevez who made his  ‘third missionary’ return to Boca Juniors early this year, had prior to the return enjoyed a short but very lucrative sojourn with Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, pocketing a reported annual salary of $41 million, which would make him the world’s highest-paid football player.

Tevez subsequently played down the reports he became the highest-paid player in the world following his move, saying, “My salary isn’t as high as the legends.”

Although Tevez who was in the same club with Nigeria’s Obafemi Martins while in China was criticised by some for being overweight he nonetheless registered four goals in 16 appearances for the side and he left the Chinese side he described his time there as a “holiday”

Tevez: Chinese Super League spell was a holiday

Carlos Tevez has labelled his time in the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Shenhua as a “holiday”.

Forward Tevez secured a return to Boca Juniors for a third spell with the club this month, having left his boyhood club for China in December.

The former Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus striker scored only four goals in 16 Chinese Super League appearances, receiving criticism for a supposed lack of effort.

Reportedly earning $40million-a-year in his time in the CSL, Tevez was disappointed about how his time in the Far East went, though he can now see the funny side.

Asked about his spell in China by TyC Sports, Tevez joked: “I was on holiday for seven months in China.

“It’s fine for the Shanghai coach and president to criticise me, I didn’t know what I was doing there.”

Addressing the end of his second stint with Boca, an exit that angered fans, Tevez added: “I know there are people who were annoyed by how I left, but that’s normal.

“I was not in a position to give 100 per cent, but it was going to hurt the fans no matter what I did.

“Now the fans will see me again with the Boca shirt and they will be excited and happy.”

League leaders Boca Juniors take on 7th placed Colon on Sunday January 28. Boca sit atop the Superliga log with 30 points in 12 matches and return of Tevez is expected to help the side intensify their quest for the league title.

Tevez made 16 appearances for Chinese Super League Shanghai Shenhua where he played alongside Nigerian international Obafemi Martins, scoring four goals for the side. Shanghai Shenhua finished 11th last season with 35 points in 30 matches.

Shanghai Shenhua have terminated the contract of striker Carlos Tevez.

The 33-year-old had another 12 months to run on his deal with the Chinese Super League side but the club have opted to release him following weeks of speculation over his future.

“The club would like to place on record our gratitude to Tevez for his contribution last season and wish him all the best in his future endeavours,” they confirmed in a statement.

Tevez is now expected to return to boyhood club Boca Juniors, having been pictured in the club’s gym on Friday.

Boca tweeted the image of a smiling Tevez on a treadmill, with the caption: “Tevez is coming home! He joined the team today and is already training with his team-mates.”

Tevez reportedly became the world’s best-paid player when he signed a two-year deal with Shenhua in December 2016 worth a reported £615,000 a week.

The former Manchester United forward endured a miserable time in China, though, scoring just four goals in 16 CSL appearances amid accusations of a poor work ethic.

He was left out of the squad for the Chinese FA Cup final and later returned to Argentina for treatment on a calf injury.

The move back to Boca was always on the cards, with club president Daniel Angelici previously saying: “When the player is free, we will talk to him.”

Meanwhile, Vice-president Horacio Paolini claimed: “I’m constantly in touch with Carlos.

“We met last week for a meal. I’d say his return will be closed in a few days.”

Boca Juniors ‘optimistic’ about Tevez return

Boca Juniors are “optimistic” they will be able to sign Carlos Tevez for a third time as his future with Shanghai Shenhua remains up in the air.

Tevez has failed to impress during his time in Shanghai, scoring just four goals in 16 Chinese Super League appearances despite the club making him one of the world’s best paid players.

The former Manchester City and Juventus star has been accused of being overweight and had his commitment questioned more than once.

His representatives are in negotiations with Shenhua about his future and it remains to be seen whether he will stay in China or indeed be made available for a transfer.

And should he be allowed to leave, Boca – for whom Tevez has already enjoyed two previous spells – are keen to bring him home on a two-year deal.

Speaking to Sportia, Boca president Daniel Angelici said: “I’m optimistic about Tevez, but we have to be cautious.

“His representative is negotiating his departure in China. First we want to see how his relationship with the club ends, whether he will continue or not.

“We hope that this situation will be resolved before January. First we want to wait as Tevez’s bond with the Chinese club is resolved. If it [Tevez being allowed to leave] happens, I want him to sign for two years.”

Shanghai Shenhua chairman Wu Xiaohui admitted Carlos Tevez has not met expectations in the Chinese Super League as the Argentinean and club’s struggles continue.

Former Manchester United and Juventus forward Tevez has been heavily criticised for his performances and fitness as Shenhua languish close to the relegation zone amid his reported weekly salary of £615,000.

The 33-year-old – who has been booed by his own fans and warned to lose weight by new head coach Wu Jingui following Gus Poyet’s resignation – scored only his third goal of the season in Shenhua’s embarrassing 6-1 rout to city rivals Shanghai SIPG last week, which extended the club’s losing streak to five consecutive games.

Under-fire Wu conceded the season has not gone according to plan, for big-spending Shenhua and star recruit Tevez.

“Our intention was to bring in an influential star player with high quality, and we all think Tevez could fit the bill,” Wu told Shanghai TV.

“However, due to a lack of winter training and match-fitness, he didn’t meet our expectations.”

Shenhua are 12th in the 16-time CSL, seven points clear of the drop zone with just six wins from 24 matches so far.

“Every team has peaks and troughs,” Wu added, “but of course I understand results are most important in competitive sports.

“I heard what everybody said about the club hierarchy. They can rest assured that, as the chairman, I will take full responsibility if we indeed make mistakes or don’t do good enough.

“And I’d like to say — for the record — that if anybody can do a better job than us, we would vacate our offices at any time. We have no problem with that.

“We would quit as long as it is in the best interest of Shenhua. We are not driven by self-interest. Not in the slightest!”

Martins missing in Shenshua victory Ighalo fires blank

Nigeria international and Shanghai Shenshua forward Obafemi Martins was not listed as his side claimed a 0-2 victory over hosts Yanbian Funde at the Yanji Nationwide Fitness Centre Stadium on Saturday.

Teammates Carlos Tevez and Cao Yunding grabbed the goals for the visitors in the 13th and 69th minutes of the goals respectively.

While Martins was not listed for his side, compatriots Brown Ideye and Odion Ighalo were in action for their respective sides Tiajin Teda and Changchun Yatai. Ighalo was in action for Yatai for 90 minutes but could not register his name on the score sheet, rather it was his teammate Du Zhenyu that scored for the team but had Chongoing Dangdai lifan level up in the 70th minute.

It was however Brown Ideye that could be said to have suffered more pain after his side lost at home to table topper and visitors Guangzhou R&F.  Although Li Yuanyi shot Tiajin Teda into the lead in the 28th minute, the lead could not be sustained as the visitors piled pressure to equalise in the in the 39th minute and added the winning goal in the 74th minute.  The victory has seen Guangzhou R&F consolidate on their number one position with 34 points in 13 matches

Ideye has made 13 appearances for Tianjin Teda this campaign with four goals with Tianjin Teda occupying the   13th with 13 points.  Fans of the team believe that things will turn around for the better when their recuperating captain and Nigerian international John Obi Mikel returns in a few weeks.

  • DO NOT CRY FOR CARLOS TEVEZ, ARGENTINA

DO NOT CRY FOR CARLOS TEVEZ, ARGENTINA

ARGENTINES are in the streets. The Brazilian Police is mad, and is reversing its code of conduct and might join the citizen protests against the World Cup. Few weeks to the opening ceremonies, the stadia are not ready and the hosts are not buying the tickets.

For the first time since Michael and the last of his kind, belted; “We are the World” the World is united on one issue and one demand. Bring back our girls! Wherever they are, Rhoda, Agnes, Hauwa, Margaret, etc, be assured that this Column and the rest of mankind are unflinching in our solidarity and support for your speedy return to your parents. It will be sad and an incomplete World Cup, if the world is denied the safe return of our girls before the opening ceremonies.

    ARGENTINA WITHOUT CARLOS TEVEZ

In our April 20th Pre Tournament analysis on Argentina, we acknowledged that Argentina would be too slippery to hold when Lionel Messi combines with Teves, Aguero…… Indeed that forward line will be lightening and these tested hounds will ensure Argentina coasting to the top of their group. Argentina’s Manager however, had his own ideas.

Tevez, one if the few attacking firecrackers on the global scene, was a star at Manchester City. If the world Cup is a tussle between the world best footballers, Argentina should book a first class ticket for this first class player. Rather the Argentina Coach cancelled Teves on the road to Brazil. For those if you who argue that the Coach has the final word, is Louis the IX, cannot be challenged, Argentina is saying to you, perish the thought. We know our best footballers; we have the technology, the new sciences, the data and our research have given us the result. Carlos Tevez is as good as the best and Argentina should invite him to play for us and the nation.

If a great football nation like Argentina is not giving in to the almighty Manager then we are moving with the tides. Very soon, we shall be employing the democratic process to pick our team for the World Cup.

At the moment, the world is saying; Bring back our girls.

Argentina is calling the Coach’s bluff over the dropping of the star attacker, Tevez. For the Super Eagles, we will continue to support Stephen Keshi’s Killer Squad. At the same time, we worry that the Coach is making light of his own statement. “Only those who have recorded constant playing shirts in their clubs would be invited on the road to Brazil”. Ikechukwu Uche not only made it in his club, he was prolific with his goals in one of the most competitive Leagues in the world.

Coach, you were also not fair to his brother Kalu Uche, the MVP at the last World Cup for Nigeria in South Africa. He scores from Set Pieces. Adroit in his ball placing, and making the true passes, he is the only Nigerian player who can close his eyes to hit home a spot kick. What a dream Midfield for Nigeria, playing Kalu Uche beside Mikel!

Judging from their level of play and application in the field, the brothers should have been invited to camp to struggle with others for the final pick.

PLAY THE MATERIALS NOT THE SYSTEM

The great masters of the game choose to play the system, accommodating the talents and materials available in the camp. At the same time, successful football managers are inclined to a set game plan and would only invite the executors to that plan to play the Coach’s will. In those Organization, Clubs and National Teams, money, and the ambounding skills and the development of the game, place the Coach in a position to organize his plan and look for his type of players to play to his particular pattern and system.

The Super Eagles we maintain have the materials. Nigeria over the years have a winning native tradition which is worrisome to any Football nation playing us in the same group.

The recent release of Coach Stephen Keshi’s list is an encouraging corroboration to our own scientific earlier forecast.

This is indeed the beauty of combining the experience of playing, administering and writing sports at this level.

For those of you who called, I did not scoop the super Eagles list for the World Cup. In Sports Journalism, a newspaper has the independence to predict the Coach and announce prior to the great matches, the Paper’s own POSSIBLES AND POSSIBLES.

The unforgettable fine Sportswriters from the iconic Daily Times Stable, Peter Osugo ,Esbee, Toyin Makanju, to Reti Uzzi, Sports Editor, during the golden age of the Observer group, all had the nose at the presence of the  mind, and would present their selected X1 before a major encounter of the Eagles.

While it is impossible, considering my limitations in space, to respond to all the calls, we will like to acknowledge with a lot of respect the courtesies extended to this Column from Akure, Ekiti State and from Chief Acarika, Port Harcourt, Rivers.

To my Teacher, Colleague, Tennis Buff, one of the greatest Nigeria’s Sports Administrators, Pioneer African Umpire at the Wimbledon and a Prince of the Tennis playing Aristocracy of Owo…. Prince Wale Olateru- Olagbegi

Sir, you are welcome and thanks for your kind comments.
