  • 15 governors, ambassadors to grace Carnival Calabar

    AS preparation for the December 28, 2016 edition of Carnival Calabar gathers momentum, Governor of Cross River State, Prof Ben Ayade has disclosed that no fewer than 15 governors, ambassadors and other top functionaries are expected to participate in the event.

    Ayade disclosed this to newsmen yesterday at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar shortly on arrival from the maiden edition of Imo Carnival held in Owerri, the Imo State capital, were he and over 250 carnival troupe from Cross River State participated.

    The governor described the synergy as a welcome development as it will promote healthy competition, confirming that, “a lot of governors have indicated that they will be here for our carnival this year.” Offering further insights on his participation in the Imo maiden carnival, Ayade explained that “Rochas taught it was wise for me to participate in the Imo Carnival to add value to the event as well as offer them the opportunity to learn from the masters themselves.

    With this kind of synergy and collaboration, you will see the carnival taking a different level. Ayade who was not unmindful of the fact that Imo Carnival is starting stronger and may likely become a brand to reckon with said: “I have no fear in my mind that with the way Governor Rochas Okorocha is going, he is definitely going to give Carnival Calabar a big fight in the next one or two years.”

    While reiterating that the 2016 edition Carnival Calabar will be bigger, better and bolder, the governor maintained: “Like I promised Nigerians and indeed tourists all over the world, this year’s carnival will be something to remember because of its rich content and it is taking a different dimension. “As we speak, I just received a message from an international agency which will be revealed soon that has already indicated interest to take over the responsibility of this famous event which has received international acceptance over the years and driving more tourists to Nigeria year in, year out.”

    Carnival Calabar: Nollywood stars to lighten dry run

    As the government and people of Cross River State prepare for this year’s edition of the popular Calabar Carnival, there are indications of a side attraction that will involve notable stars in the Nigerian film industry.
    Although actors are known to have participated in the show, this will be the first time they will be taking part in the dry run, being the last before the main show, tagged Africa’s biggest street party.
    Some of the actors expected at the dry run include, Desmond Elliot, Keppy Ekpenyong, Alex Ekubo, Kunle Afolayan, Bimbo Akintola, Shan George, Pete Edochie, Jide Kosoko, Fred Amata, John Okafor, aka Mr Ibu, Sedater Saviour, Fidelis Duker, Moses Armstrong, Ini Edo and Emmanuel Williamson, among others.
    The actors are expected to be in Calabar for the show this Sunday where they will later storm the Transcorp Hotel, Calabar for the Cross River Movie Award (CRMA).
    According to Mr. Obaji Akpet, Creative Director of Cross River Studios, the company responsible for publicizing CRMA, said CRMA’s goal was to bring the needed support to entertainment events in the State.
    Akpet urged government and private individuals to encourage CRMA; given the level of limelight it is giving art and entertainment in the State.
    Convened yearly by Mr. Eric Anderson, Special Assistant to Cross River Government on Tourism Development, CRMA, since its debut in 2013, has remained Cross River State’s foremost movie event.

  • Carnival Calabar is revenue driver, says Deputy Governor

    The Deputy Governor of Cross River, Mr Efiok Cobham, on Friday said the impact of the Carnival Calabar on the State was tremendous.

    Cobham made the remark in Calabar at the Grand Finale of the Carnival Calabar 2013 with the theme: “Ain’t No Stopping Us.’’

    “From the economic perspective, Carnival Calabar is a revenue driver.

    “From the tourist’s perspective, Cross River has witnessed a large turnout of people in and outside the country participating in the carnival.

    “Carnival Calabar attracts over 100,000 costumes, revelers, and a million local and international spectators. It is the biggest street party in Africa.’’

    He said the carnival was a unique visual display of innovation and creativity, featuring cultural influences and traditions from the past and present in costumes, drama, dance and music.

    The deputy governor expressed happiness for being alive to witness the 2013 carnival.

    The Cross River Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr Peter Ojie, also described the Carnival Calabar 2013 as unique and colourful.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the carnival was attended by top Nigerian musicians, Nollywood actors/actresses, politicians and international artistes.

    Officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps provided security coverage for participants in the 13-kilometre walk around major streets in Calabar. It started on Thursday.
