  • Foundation hosts carnival for humanity

The annual Adire Street Culture Carnival will hold from December 25 to 27, in Lagos.

According to the national co-ordinator of the carnival, Princess Oluwabukola Adubi Fasuyi, the event will hold at the National Arts Theatre, the Lagos home of arts and culture.

She said Nigeria occupied a pride of place in fashion and textile industry in Africa.

“As a country globally recognised for her rich culture and diverse tradition, Nigeria boasts of an incredible array of fashion choices and fabrics. Notable amongst these fabrics is the adire, which has found favour amongst people all over the continent of Africa and Europe, America, Canada and Asia.

“The fashion industry has also continued to grow by the day, with more and more people coming into adire production, and bringing in various innovations. As a way of promoting this very thriving fashion and garment industry, which by the way will also be doubling as promotion for Nigeria’s culture and tradition, Lady of Africa Foundation, has embarked on a mission to take the highly appreciated fabric to an entirely different level through exhibitions and carnivals,” she added.

Princess Fasuyi commended the role played by the National Council for Arts and Culture and the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, both government agencies that have been giving the Lady of Africa Foundation tremendous support since inception.

She added that invitation was open to all to experience the beauty and richness of the African culture, which would be on display on these special days, including traditional cuisine, emu fun fun (African palm wine), eran igbe among other delicacies.

“The foundation will also in the coming year, be taking the promotion to South Africa, Europe and America, to satisfy the craving of lovers of the adire fabric in those parts of the world. The Lady of Africa Foundation hopes to empower up to 50million Nigerian women and youth through its various activities. Already, lots of people in the country – privileged and the less-privileged have been empowered through direct and indirect job opportunities creation by the foundation through its various promotion and marketing of the fabric,” she said.

  • Lagos to celebrate Suya carnival

    Lagos to celebrate Suya carnival

As part of activities to mark the Lagos at 50 celebrations, Suya Stops, in partnership with the Lagos State Government, will be putting together a first-of-its-kind, Lagos City Suya Carnival.

Slated for October 1, the founder of Syua Stops, Kehinde Talabi said that the idea was borne out of the need to celebrate Africa, Nigeria and especially Lagos using one of the chops that has become a household name across the metropolis over several years.

“Suya as we all know didn’t originate from Lagos but you will all agree with me that the average Lagos Street or road has one Suya joint or one close by. Such is the love we have shown this delicacy that has seemingly become part and parcel of Lagos,” he said.

As part of the activities for the carnival, he will be making a 50ft long Suya steak and breaking record hence putting Lagos state as a whole on the world map isn’t a bad way to launch the event of this magnitude.

“Basically, the idea is to have a carnival where Suya centres will flood the carnival area with different array and recipes of Suya to savour all through the carnival. From beef suya to chicken suya, Gizzard Suya and even sausage suya. All these will be on display at the carnival,” he added.

Other highlight of the event, he said, will include games, music, jamboree, drinks as well as networking.

The carnival is also supported by Superflux and Bitflux companies.

  • Carnival on the plateau

    Carnival on the plateau

In carnival gear Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong leads 52 tribes of the state in a street celebration of peace.

Governor Simon Lalong led the way. His wife Regina followed, as did members of the state legislative assembly, commissioners and over 52 tribes of the state. Plateau State was in a jolly mood. After crisis, peace has returned, and it was worth celebrating, the people said.

For a few years, the state, known for its clement weather, hospitality and tourist sites, lost its peace. Sectarian crises, thought to have been orchestrated by unscrupulous politicians, threatened to tear the state apart. As if that was not enough, cattle breeders and local crop farmers clashed persistently resulting in wanton waste of life and property.

That unsettling atmosphere has since given way, and the people trooped out to reaffirm the peaceful coexistence for which they were known. The carnival brought out all the cultural organisations of the state as well as professionals in the entertainment industry in a very long train of street display.

Governor Lalong also had the company of the Minister of Youth and Sport Solomon Dalung, the state Deputy Governor Sonny Tyoden and the entire cabinet. Local government chiefs and the party leaders were not left either.

It was on Easter Monday, a public holiday, which provided the opportunity for residents to savour the carnival atmosphere in Jos, the state capital.

The over 52 native tribes of Plateau State and other ethnic groups came out to showcase their rich cultures. It was a day residents celebrated the return of peace to the state.

“We are celebrating our peace through this carnival, there is nothing like peace, and we are living in “Home of peace tourism”, Plateau is back again”, some of them said. “We are demonstrating our joy, our peace, our unity, our everything.”

Addressing the jubilant crowd at the Jos Polo Field where the carnival procession terminated, Governor Lalong said, “The days of mourning and burial as a result of crisis or attacks are over. We have to celebrate this hard-earned peace, we shall do this every year because it brings together our people to celebrate and forget our sorrowful past”

The governor also used to opportunity to call on youths to desist from any form of crime and criminality and develop their talents for the betterment of Plateau State and Nigeria.

Lalong said, “I am the happiest governor in the 36 states of the federation today, the days of mourning and burial are over. Plateau State in the history of Nigeria has produced great talented minds, musicians, sport men and women in Nigeria, the likes of 2face, P Square, Ice Prince, MI, Kelvin Pam, sport legends and will continue to do that. Plateau has produced some the great and famous politicians, administrators, the state has produced two winners of Big Brother Africa in the person of Kelvin Pam and Efe. We are celebrating our culture, our human resources, our potentials; indeed, the state has impacted positively on the growth and development of the entire country, we have reason to celebrate,” he said.

  • Calabar Carnival: Foreign bands show stuff again

Calabar Carnival: Foreign bands show stuff again

•As Ita Giwa’s troupe gets home lead

The streets of Calabar, Cross River, provided yet another beautiful spectacle as richly-costumed girls led each group, accompanied by music-bearing trucks and acrobatic dancers who thrilled the sea of revellers on holidays.

This was just as masquerades, music and movie celebrities, notable disc-jockeys and exquisite floats offered side attractions.

In what could be described as a bigger and better funfair, this year’s edition of the annual Calabar Carnival delivered on the promises of the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade, who shortly after the previous edition in 2015, proposed a repeat of Climate Change as the theme for the next event which eventually took place last yuletide season.

It was the second year running that Ayade was producing the Carnival as the helmsman of the State, and also the second time that his inclusion of international troupes in the show held sway, delivering the theme through the creative ingenuity of colourfully costumed dancers, drummers, acrobats and their likes.

Touted as Africa’s biggest street party, last December’s show received a boost with 13 participating countries as against 10 that took part in the competition in 2015. This was in addition to the Nigerian troupe represented by Seagull Band, which defeated Freedom Band, Bayside Band, Passion4 Band and Master Blasta Band in the local arm of the competition.

The visiting troupes included Vai Vai Samba of Brazil, winner of the competition and Ghana and Rwanda, the first and second runners up respectively.

With elegant, tall and beautiful dancers, the much-anticipated Brazil band was once again daring in skimpy eye-prying costumes, albeit energetic and creative with their samba performance.

Other participating countries were Flamingo of Spain, Drumming Wonders of Burundi, Acrobats from Kenya, South Africa, South Korea, Croatia, Ukraine, Turkey, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, represented by Passion-4, this year’s winner of the Carnival Calabar competition.

The carnival also featured musical performances by top Nigerian artistes including Tubaba, Davido, Kiss Daniel and MC Galaxy.

According to Ayade, it was necessary to repeat the theme of the carnival because more and more countries in the world continue to show concern for the environment, recalling that the World Bank had set aside $100 billion to support Africa’s afforestation and climate change drive, while United Nations (UN) had also set aside $100 billion annually to support climate change in Third World countries.

He added that several side attractions were added to the carnival because his government realised the role that tourism could play in the growth of the state and the country in general.

The Carnival also featured the Bikers’ Parade with over 1000 power bikers drawn from different parts of the world.

In a 12-kilometre ride, the bikers, led by the state governor, performed different stunts to the admiration of the ecstatic crowd who awed at the skills of the extreme riders.

“Carnival Calabar is the melting pot of African hospitality where warmth and ecstatic embrace is the order of the day,” said Ayade.

“This carnival represents the true mentality, unity and harmony of Africa. That, indeed, as we have started today, it is the beginning of a new dawn of unity in African.”

The float was very high, while the wire was not that high.
The Katsina State contingent did not notice that their float was too high to pass beneath the electric cables as they and everyone were carried away by the excitement and fanfare that being experienced during the procession.

  • Obiano to lead Anambra carnival

    Obiano to lead Anambra carnival

Anambra State is still in a celebration mood several weeks after marking its 25th anniversary.

This second phase of the four-month long anniversary celebration programme, according to the coordinator of the Anambra at 25 events, Chief Emeka Okonkwo, is fashioned to draw attention to the “rich tourism potentials of Anambra State, especially in this period of economic difficulty which calls for diversification and creativity in the revenue drive of the state.”

Addressing the traditional rulers of the 179 communities in the state, at the Government House, Awka, Anambra state capital, Okonkwo solicited their support on behalf of the Organising Committee, for the remaining part of the anniversary programme.

He said, “The Anambra @ 25 Committee wants to use this historical silver jubilee of our dear state to showcase not only  our rich cultural heritage, natural endowments but also our unique tourisms potentials.

“Tourism all over the world is a big business. Many countries around the globe derive huge revenue from tourism and Anambra with its diverse tourism endowments,  should rightly be on the front role of tourism sector in Nigeria if  the sector is well developed, essential as government has provided the enabling environment for it to thrive.”

Speaking further, he said, “We are grateful to the government of His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano, for the decisive manner it fought against criminality and insecurity in Anambra state in the past two years. Now with a secured Anambra, we will no longer be afraid to invite our brothers, sisters, friends and other tourism enthusiasts from within and outside the shores of Nigeria to come and have a feel of tourism in Anambra state,” adding that developing and harnessing the tourism potentials in Anambra will not only earn the state extra revenue but also stimulate economic activities in the regions that host the numerous tourism sites in the state.

Okonkwo also disclosed that the anniversary celebration is at no cost to the state government as sponsorship cost is borne by private individuals and corporate bodies who are using the opportunity of the historical event to identify with Anambra state.

Anambra, in the recent past was dreaded by visitors because of its notoriety for criminality. But Governor Obiano administration has taken on this ugly situation with an iron fist that Anambra has become one of the safest states in Nigeria today.

Speaking on how he turned that ugly trend around, Governor Obiano stated: “I figured out that there could be no meaningful progress in this state without a successful attack against crime. I knew that no investor would go to a crime-ridden environment. So, we launched an all-out war against kidnappers, armed robbers, drug dealers and child-traffickers.

“We smashed crime syndicates and pulled down the warehouses used for keeping kidnap victims. We donated smart cars to the police, gunboats to the navy and last Christmas, we launched police helicopters to watch over our skies.

“And so, for the first time since the creation of this great state, we made sure that Anambra was effectively covered on the land, in the waters and in the sky! With that effort, we achieved 360 degrees security coverage of the state, “he noted.

The result this efforts is the enabling environment for the development of the tourism sector that Okonkwo, alluded to.

According to the published programmes of event, this tourism drive will be kick-started by a cultural beauty pageant and zonal cultural dance/masquerade competitions billed to take place in each of the three senatorial zones in the vicinity of the key tourism sites in each of the zones.

Tourism sites such as Agulu Lake, famed for its sacred crocodiles and turtles, Ogbunike Cave, located in Oyi Local Government Area and Ogba Waterfalls in Owerre-Ezukala, will all play host to the zonal cultural fiestas. This strategy, according to the organizers, is to through this means, bring people to these sites in order to enable them to appreciate these gifts of nature that God has blessed Anambra with.

Six selected communities from each of the zones would then take part in the grand finale and the state carnival to be led personally by the governor in the state capital Awka, in December 17, 2016.

The cultural competition is designed to showcase the best of Anambra state cultural dances and indigenous masquerades.  The organisers also revealed that the carnival would become an annual state event like the popular Calabar Carnival, however, participants would be encouraged to wear customs that depict the culture and tradition of Anambra state, unlike in Calabar which parades Brazilian custom themes.
