    Lady Carpenter Agatha Eric-Udorie rebrands after 30 years

    Agatha Eric-Udorie is widely referred to as ‘Lady Carpenter,’ a moniker she got in her first years of venturing into the world of interior design and decor.

    Married to an architect, Eric Uche Udorie, Agatha has made a success out of her passion despite getting a first degree as a nurse.

    The 58-year-old Agatha has established herself as a professional interior designer, who exudes a rare mix of deep passion and intuitive knowledge.

    In what many close associates describe as a fascinating twist in fate, the young professionally trained Nurse found herself being tutored in the workshop of a carpenter, which eventually led to the birth of her successful firm, Agatha’s Interior Design Ltd.

    As a young lady in a majorly masculine profession, she grew in knowledge and the rudiments of carpentry, and so also grew her intense desire for beautifying interior spaces. She combined this passion with her already broad exposure to luxury and detailed finishing, which straightened her path into the very enterprising entrepreneur of repute she has become. Her generous experience encompasses all facets of the industry and some aspects of civil engineering and finishing construction.

    Her working career started at Finishing Marble, where she was Head Sales for some years before she left to start her first Company Boli-A Enterprises. Boli-A Enterprises at the time, was engaged in the production of furniture and the company was a manufacturer for several prominent and leading brands including Leather World during the first renaissance era of interior design in Nigeria. Leather World offered her a rare opportunity to showcase and hone her talents offering a dedicated corner in her gallery. Bimbo Alashe, the CEO of Leather World was one of the pillars in the industry on whose experience Agatha thrived.

    In 1994, after adding a lot to her knowledge, exposure and entrepreneurial experience, Agatha Eric-Udorie went ahead to start off Agatha’s Interior Design Limited with the support of her husband, Arch. Eric Uche Udorie.

    In 2013, she was nominated to the International Federation of Interior Designers & Architects as a Resource Council Member.

    By her inspirational leadership, Udorie has led the Agatha’s Interior Design Ltd team to win several industry awards both locally and internationally, which includes; The IDEA Award (Interior Design Excellence Award) for best showroom 2013 and 2014.

    In 2015, Agatha’s Interior won the Arch of Europe – International Quality Award, Gold Category in Frankfurt, Germany. The following year, Agatha’s Interior won a similar award but in the Platinum category, winning the International Award for Excellence and Business Prestige, in New York, United States of America. Finally, in 2017, Agatha’s Interior Design Ltd won the best Employer of the Year Award 2016/2017 by MATKO Ventures, a notable recruitment firm.

    Agatha till date, has been and remains in charge of affairs at the company since inception, being fully responsible for providing the direction, inspiration, motivation and guidance through the company’s several growth stages and phases evidently witnessed over the past years. She is still fondly called the “Lady Carpenter.”

    The ever-smiling Agatha has a Doctor of Science (D.Sc) in Entrepreneurship and Strategic Business Management from International Entrepreneurship University (IEU), USA.

  • Carpenter arraigned for allegedly defiling neighbour’s daughter

    A 40-year-old carpenter, James Kola, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s 10-year-old daughter, yesterday appeared at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Kola, who lives in Ilupeju, Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Christopher John, told the court that the accused committed the offence between 2017 and 2018 at his home.

    He alleged that the accused was caught by his neighbours while having carnal knowledge of the girl in his room.

    John alleged that the accused had been sleeping with the minor since 2017.

    He said the offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Chief Magistrate P.E. Nwaka granted the accused bail at N500,000 with two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till May 2 for mention.

  • Carpenter jailed 16 months for N80,000 theft

     

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, has sentenced a carpenter Emeka Okonkwo to 16 months imprisonment for stealing phones and cash worth N80,000.

    Magistrate P. A. Adekomaiya convicted Okonkwo following his plea of guilt to a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen properties.

    Adekomaiya sentenced Okonkwo without an option of fine.

    Okonkwo, 32, was arraigned by the police last November 7, alongside Isaac Ibrahim, 55.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Peace Chukwudi said the defendants committed the alleged offences last November 5, at about 10pm, at Elf Bus Stop, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

    She said they stole recharge cards valued at N50, 000 and a cash sum of N30, 000, belonging to the complainant, Mrs Ima Jack.

    According to her, the offences contravened sections 287, 329 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Okonkwo pleaded guilty.

    Ibrahim denied the charge and was granted N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Before Magistrate Adekomaiya passed judgment on Okonkwo on Thursday, Chukwudi reviewed the facts of the case.

    She said that Okonkwo stole the recharge cards when he went to the complainant’s shop, a food vendor to buy food.

    According to the prosecutor, Okonkwo gained access to the complainant’s bag where the recharge cards were kept and stole them with the said money.

    She said: “Okonkwo sold the stolen items to the second accused, Ibrahim.”

    Magistrate Adekomaiya adjourned till April 12, for the second defendant’s trial.

    Carpenter pleads guilty to raping 18-year-old daughter

    A 45-year old carpenter, Olumide Akinleye, who allegedly cohabited with and raped his own daughter, is to remain behind bars pending judgment, an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court ordered in Ibadan on Friday.

    Chief Magistrate Modina Akanni, who gave the ruling, said Akinleye should be kept in police custody until when hearing would begin.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lustful father had admitted committing the offence.

    Akinleye, who lives in Odo-Ona Elewe in Ibadan, is facing a charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of his biological daughter.

    Earlier, Police Prosecutor Sunday Fatola told the court that Akinleye had a carnal knowledge of his 18-year-old daughter in their apartment.

    “Akinleye, who is cohabiting with his daughter in his one-room apartment, raped her several times between September and December 2017.”

    He said the girl had confessed during investigation that she confided in her father’s friend about the several sex bouts against her will.

    The offence contravened Section 214 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

    The case has been adjourned until Jan. 25 for facts and sentence.

    Carpenter gets N150, 000 bail for ‘gang-raping’

    Thirty-one-year-old, Azubike Agwu, who allegedly gang-raped a teenage girl with two other men, was yesterday granted a temporary reprieve by an  Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Chief Magistrate Taiwo Akanni granted the accused N150, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The accused, a carpenter, who lives at 259, Ikorodu Road, Ketu, a suburb of Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and rape.

    Agwu, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Prosecutor Clifford Ogu told the court that the offence was committed at 12.45 a.m. on January 1 at Orishigun Street, Mile 12, Lagos.

    Ogu said the accused and two others now at large, gang-raped the 15-year-old girl while returning home from December 31 Crossover Service.

    “The girl, who was in company of her friends, was left behind and in a bid to catch up with them, three men appeared and dragged her to a nearby bush where they all raped her and escaped.”

    According to him, the girl was able to identify one of the accused persons.

    Ogu said the case was reported at the police station and the accused was immediately arrested.

    The case has been adjourned till February 7.

     

  • Carpenter with toy gun jailed 12 months

    A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, yesterday sentenced a carpenter, Chinonso Eze, to 12 months’ imprisonment, for possessing a toy gun and knife at a public place.

    Eze, 32, of Gwagwa, by Tasha 1, Abuja, was convicted following his guilty plea to charges of attempting to commit an offence and escape from lawful custody.

    The Judge, Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, sentenced him to six months in jail on each of the two counts.

    He said the punishment would have been more severe, if the carpenter had wasted the court’s time and allowed a trial.

    Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crimes.

    The prosecutor, Mrs. Florence Avhioboh, told the court that a police patrol unit, led by Abbah Gabriel, arrested Eze, about 12:25 am., on September 1.

    She said he was arrested at an ATM Gallery at Jabi, Abuja, in possession of a toy gun and knife.

    Carpenter charged with armoured cables theft

    The police have arrested a 32-year-old carpenter at Eko Atlantic City, Francis Humbe, for allegedly burglarising a firm, Eko Pearl Construction Company.
    The police said Humbe, from Benue State, was caught by the firm’s security guards carting away 50 meters of armoured electrical cables, valued at N250,000.
    The Nation learnt that about 3am on January 4, one of the firm’s guards was on patrol when he allegedly saw the suspect hacking away at the cables with a saw blade.
    He raised the alarm and along with his colleagues, they chased the suspect and wrestled him to the ground.
    It was gathered that Humbe told the police afterwards that his wages of N2000 per day had not been paid since 2016 and that his wife and newborn were on admission at the hospital with no money to settle their hospital bills.
    Humbe, of 20, Oguntolu Street, Ijaiye, Lagos, was arraigned yesterday at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on a charge marked Q/01/2017.
    He is standing trial before Mr P. A. Adekomaya on a count of stealing.
    Prosecuting Corporal Friday Mameh told the court the offence contravened Section 285(7) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.
    Humbe pleaded not guilty to the charge.
    He was admitted to bail at N50,000 with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned till January 25.

    Carpenter ‘steals’ TV sets at Eko Hotel

    THE police have arrested a carpenter, Adebowale Johnson, for allegedly breaking into an Eko Hotel store in Victoria Island, Lagos and stealing television sets valued at N3, 469,000.

    Johnson, 45, who lives behind ‘Prayer City’, Mowe-Ibafo, Ogun State, was arraigned yesterday before Mrs S. K. Matepo of an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    He is standing trial on a two-count charge of theft preferred against him by the police.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Cyriacus Osuji told the court that the defendant committed the offence last August 6, at about 11am at Eko Hotel and Suites, Adetokunbo Ademola Street, Victoria Island.

    He said Johnson was contracted as a carpenter by a store on the hotel’s premises, Eko Atlantic Exhibition, but broke into the store and stole 28 television sets.

    Osuji said: “The defendant stole three 52-inch LG Plasma TV sets valued at N200, 000 each, 19 sets of 42-inch LG Plasma TV valued at N130, 000 each and six sets of 32-inch LG Plasma TV valued at N71, 000 each.

    “The total value of the goods are N3, 496,000.00, all properties of Eko Atlantic Exhibition.”

    The offences, he added, were punishable under Sections 307 (1), 285 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

    The defendant denied the charge and Magistrate Matepo granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till September 11.

  • Suspected cultists kill carpenter

    A carpenter simply identified as Abila has been shot dead by suspected cultists on Rasaq Tijani Street in Ikotun, Lagos.

    Abila, who was widely referred to as ‘Ewe’ was killed near his house.

    The Nation learnt that the cultists, who rode on three motorcycles, also attacked residents of Abaranje, Bakare in Ikotun and Igando around 7pm last Friday.

    A resident, Sola, described Abila’s killing as a shocking as he was an easy-going, gentle and friendly individual.

    “He was living with his guardian, who has been accommodating him since he came to Lagos,” he said.

    A landlord told The Nation that the incidence was shocking. He said some elders in the area immediately reported the case to the Ikotun Police station on identifying the victim.

    He said policemen were still arranging the removal of the corpse when they learnt that another person had been killed.

    His words: “I was coming from work when I realised that everywhere was in chaos and people were running. When I got home, I went to Mosque and asked what happened and I was told a young guy on our street had been shot. When the situation calmed down, some elders gathered to identify who the victim was and we found it was Abila. They went to the police station to report the incident and some policemen followed them to our street in three vehicles. We were still on the matter when some people rushed down from Abaranje that someone has also been killed.”

    Another landlord said: “Abila was a popular and friendly person. In fact, if you are going and you perhaps did not see him, he will draw your attention and greet you and that is why we are surprised he could be targeted by cultists.”

    The Nation learnt that his body was initially taken away by the policemen but was returned after the deceased’s family members demanded for it. He was buried on Saturday.

    Abila’s guardian, who is yet to recover from the shock said: “I was not at home when it happened as I only came back to learn of it. I’ve been in the hospital since then. There is nothing I can do because what has happened has happened. It’s not something to be remembered.”

  • Carpenter in court for ‘defiling’ minor

    A 32-year old carpenter, Samuel Ogan, who allegedly defiled his neighbour’s eight-year-old daughter was on Tuesday arraigned in Lagos State.

    The accused, who resides at 28b, Oloruntedo Street in Majiyagbe area of Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos, is facing a charge of defilement before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Rafael Donny, told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 3 at his residence.

    Donny said the accused called the girl into his room that he wanted to send her on an errand.

    “He then shut the door, covered her mouth and had canal knowledge of her.

    “She later narrated what happened to her mother, who took the matter to the police station’’ he said

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias ordered that the accused be remanded in Kirikiri prison and adjourned the case till July 19.
