    Ejigbo CDAs hold elections

ELECTION of the executive members of Community Development Associations (CDAs) in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area has been held.

The Chairperson of the Electoral Committee, Mrs. Hontonnu Senapon, told journalists that distribution of voting materials and vehicles to electoral officials began as early as 5am and by 8am, electoral officers set out for the exercise in 55 CDAs that obtained election forms out the 74 CDAs registered by the council.

At Ejigbo Central CDA and Fadu CDA, members were seen casting their votes while counting was done in the presence of voters and the candidates. In other centres like Dauda-Illo and Ageke West, the exercise was more of ratification of candidates, as there was no opposition against the candidature of members who vied for the 14 executive positions in the respective CDAs.

Speaking after casting his vote at Ori-Oke Ifelodun CDA, Council Chairman, Kehinde Bamigbetan, stated that the rationale for organising election to determine who run the affairs at the CDA level, is to break the cabal that has held on to the leadership structure of the community for many years.

He added that Ejigbo LCDA is the first council to introduce the principles of democracy in the process of choosing leaders at the CDA level.

The positions contested for are chairman, 1st Vice chairman, 2nd vice chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary, Financial Secretary, Public Relations Officer, Welfare officer, Auditor, Social Secretary, Ex-officio 1, Ex-officio 2 and Ex-officio 3.

  • CDA raises alarm over hoodlums’ threat

Oremeji Wasimi Onipanu Community Development Association of Ota in Ogun State has appealed to the Police to introduce regular patrols in the area to check night marauders.

The hoodlums they claimed are threatening the residents’ security.

Its chairman, Mr. Babalola Ebofin told The Nation yesterday that the patrols have become necessary especially as the festive period approaches.

Ebofin said a fortnight ago, armed robbers operated in the area for about two hours, raiding five houses and carting away unspecified sums of money and valuables worth millions of naira.

Such situation, he said, has not been witnessed in the area for a long time, appealing to the Divisional Police Station at Obasanjo junction to arrest the situation before it degenerates further.

Ebofin appealed to the Ogun State Government and Ado-Odo Ota Local Government to rehabilitation the roads in the community, adding that they have become impassable due to the heavy waste disposal trucks that dump refuse at the famed Kurata dump site.

The CDA Chairman said some identifiable companies whose trucks ply the roads include those of Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA), private sector participation vehicles (PSP) trucks of surrounding companies like those of Julius Berger, Federated Mills and others.

Ebofin said the dilapidated state of the roads have slowed down economic activities and now constitute health hazards to the community.

“People of the community are largely farmers and traders who have found it almost impossible to ferry their farm produce and wares to the nearby markets. It has also become practically impossible to transport sick children and pregnant women to the nearby hospitals,” he said.

  • Community seeks protection

The Obele Esepe Community Development Area (CDA) in Badagry on the outskirts of Lagos, has appealed to police Commissioner Umar Manko to restore peace there.

Claiming that the area has come under the terror of hoodlums, the community’s leaders said people now lived in fear.

A resident said: “We no longer sleep. All we hear at night and most times in the day are sporadic gunshots between the warring parties. The police should come to our rescue before they kill all of us”.

The community’s chairman, Chief Gambo Maro, sought protection from the police before people were killed.

He said: “Some people invaded our community with guns and cutlasses claiming they are fighting over land dispute that is already being handled by the court. Some of our members were attacked by these invaders. Some were attacked at gun point and with cutlasses. They were robbed; children and their mothers were beaten in broad day light and the fears have continued to live with us”.
