  • CDS won’t quit, says DHQ

The Defence Headquarters has dismissed reports that the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sa’ad Ola Ibrahim, had indicated his intention to voluntarily retire.

At a briefing yesterday, the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen Chris Olukolade, said there was no truth in the report.

Olukolade said: “The Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Sa’ad Ibrahim, has not, under any circumstances, sought or asked for the permission of the President to voluntarily retire from service as reported by the national newspapers and online reporters.

“These media outfits did not bother to check for facts before embarking on this dangerous sensational report, which is capable of inciting insecurity in the country.

“This is most unfortunate, especially as it went on to paint a scenario that portrays power struggle within the services, apparently to undermine the leadership of the Armed Forces.

“Admiral Ibrahim remains committed to serving the nation to the best of his ability in his capacity as the Chief of Defence Staff of the most vibrant Armed Forces of sub-Sahara Africa.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is hereby clarified that the CDS has not tendered any such notice; neither is he ill as claimed in the spurious reports.”

The spokesman said the CDS was in the United Kingdom last week.

According to him, the Defence Chief is in Cote D’Ivoire on an official assignment.

Olukolade allayed fears over repeated attacks by Boko Haram in the North, saying the sect is on the final stage of the battle.

He said the defeat of the sect is imminent, adding that the threat of the sect’s activities in the Southwest had been curtailed.

“What we are witnessing from Boko Haram is a kind of desperation.

“There is a saying that the battle is hottest when it is about to an end.

“This shows this is the last fight by the Boko Haram.

“From the way they have been working and the expectation from the headquarters, the fight against terrorism is coming to an end.

“Whatever that is happening, the end to terrorism has come in Nigeria.”

    CDS gets executive

As the 2011 Batch “C” Corps members completed their mandatory service last week, there were handing over ceremonies in various Community Development Service (CDS) groups. The outgoing president of the Press CDS in Girei Local Government Area of Adamawa State handed over to a president for the group.

Speaking at the ceremony held at Radio Gotel, Yola, the Local Government Inspector, Mr Garba Shendam, admonished the serving youths to rededicate themselves to community service. He stressed the need for continuity in CDS groups, assuring that he would continuously give support to move it forward.

He said: “CDS is the most interesting part of your service because that is the only place you can interact with the society, interact with the community. So, the group is important. I hope you will continue with the good work of your predecessors because continuity is the keyword.”

Earlier in his remark, the outgoing president, Abdullateef Aliyu, noted that his executive was able to discharge the mandate of the group. He said: “You will recall that we promised to use our leverage with the sister CDS group in Yola to come up with a more professional publication and to God be the glory, we can say that we have been able to achieve this.”

Abdullateef urged the incoming executive led by Ajibola Wande-Kayode to keep the flag flying, saying, “we have no doubt in the ability of the present executive to carry on with the noble ideals of the CDS.”

He praised the management of Gotel Communications for its support and encouragement to Corps members. Responding, Ajibola promised to move the group to the next level.

Cyber fraud endangers CBN’s ‘cashless policy’, says CDS

    •‘Defence Headquarters’ website hacked’

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshall Uluseyi Petinrin, has s said the rise in cyber fraud endangers Nigeria’s ‘cashless policy.’

Speaking at the ‘World Cyber Security Conference’ yesterday in Abuja, the CDS also said unknown persons have accessed the computer systems of the Defence Headquarters and Nigerian Navy.

Air Chief Marshall Petinrin wasrepresented at the conference by the Chief of Research and Development, Major-General M. K. Amao.

He noted that there is an upsurge in high profile hacking against top corporations and institutions around the world.

According to the CDS, most systems are being infiltrated and confidential information stolen.

He said: “Here in Nigeria, our defence and security institutions have not been left out. My defence headquarters’ website, for example, was hacked not too long ago. One of the services, the Navy, also had its website hacked.

‘’We are also aware of similar experiences with other security agencies in the country.

“Furthermore, the threat posed by the Boko Haram sect through online reports of their activities needs to be effectively checked.’’

The CDS said the Defence Headquarters has sucessfully deployed Information Communication Technology (ICT), surveillance and tracking equipment to locate criminals and Boko Haram insurgents.

But he said more would be achieved ‘’if we apply cyber technology and space researches to tackle the country’s contemporary security challenges.”

Air Chief Marshall Petinrin said criminals have attacked cloud-based servers in a global fraud campaign affecting about 60 banks worldwide, stealing billions of dollars.
