  • Graduating students celebrate

    Graduating students celebrate

It was all fanfare at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State as graduating students engaged in celebration to mark their final examinations.

The students were clad in unformed white shirts as to perform the ‘ritual’ of graduation. The shirts had different inscriptions according to their departments.

As they came out of the examination hall, the campus erupted in excitement as the students knelt down before their junior colleagues, who wrote different expressions, including names, on their shirts with permanent-ink markers.

Some of the graduating students spoke to CAMPUSLIFE about their experience in school, saying they crossed many hurdles before their final examination.

Moshood Ojurongbe, a graduating Mass Communication student, said: “Studying Mass Communication did not come easy. When I was admitted in 2011, the environment was hostile. • LASU workers celebrate VC’s exit

    LASU workers celebrate VC’s exit

Lagos State University workers yesterday celebrated the exit of their Vice Chancellor, Prof John Oladapo Obafunwa.

Decked in Aso Ebi (uniform) earmarked for the occasion, the workers hired drummers and praise singers for a thankgiving at the university’s main gate.

They  sang victory songs while dancing.

The workers later moved into the university premises, danced through the departments and faculties.

Though, the event coincided with the institution’s 33rd anniversary, the workers decided to rechristen the event “Independence Day,” saying the occasion was symbolic for two reasons.

“We are celebrating the anniversary of LASU which clocked 33 last Sunday. But why we call it Independence Day is because we are celebrating our independence from the draconian administration of the outgoing management, headed by Prof John Oladapo Obafunwa,” said members of the Senior Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (SSANU-LASU).

For hours, the workers defied a downpour as they danced, displaying placards with the inscription: “Rejoice with LASU on the exit of evil.” “It’s the dawn of independence.”

They were represented by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU); Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU); Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Associations (NASU); and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

Activities for the event began penultimate Sunday with a Christian interdenominational prayer followed by other activities such as symposium (Thursday), press briefing (Tuesday), Muslim and interdenominational prayers (Friday), among others.

Obafunwa, became vice chancellor on October 31, 2010. His five-year tenure expired last Saturday. The latter part of his administration witnessed frictions with the workers who accused him of high handedness, favouritism, denial of workers’ promotion, non-payment of outstanding salary arrears, and victimisation of workers, among others.

  • What’s there to celebrate?

SIR: Our society is a reflection of our core value systems, our norms, how we handle our infrastructural and environmental concerns, what are the things that we pay more or less attention to as a people. The way we place our priorities show whether we are ready to build a lasting legacy for the coming generations or just concerned about the moment.

It is appalling that 55 years of nationhood, we are neither able to get our acts right  nor bequeath workable structures and institutions that can promote and sustain decency and patriotism. Our rewards system is not in favour of hard work and probity. Corruption has taken over the whole landscape and the fabrics of the nation; people now steal public funds in trillions only to get a gentle slap on their backs. The laws seems alive only for the weak and the poor, but alien to the big guys at the corridors of power. It only takes a man or woman to be an overnight billionaire if  suddenly appointed into public office.

As things stand, it is going to take eternity to restructure our society and to lay strong foundations for development that will endure. Ours is a society that lack conscience and commitment both from the leaders and the led. What interest us mostly is what we can get and not what we can do to make Nigeria great. Little wonder that our legislators are the highest paid in the whole world with little contributions they are making to our development.

I wonder when we are going to celebrate uninterrupted power supply;  we celebrate mediocrity, jubilating over less than 5000mw said to have been attained recently, while the global standard is 1,000mw for 1,000,000 people, which means Nigeria electricity needs is about 160, 000mw to meet the global standard.

Majority of our roads are not motorable, full of potholes.  Thousands of innocent people are known to have perished on our roads as from accidents due to deplorable state of our roads. One wonders when will Nigeria have good road networks.

And to imagine that some governors are still presiding over the affairs of their states at a time workers under them are owed between six to eight mouths salaries. This can only happen in Nigeria!

As we celebrate our 55th independence anniversary, I wish that in no distant time, we will be able to truly celebrate independence in the true sense of the word – in a country where lives will be made meaningful for the citizens and our roads and cities will be of global standard, with provision of adequate power supply, potable water, good roads, security, stable electricity and in clean environments.
