Former Minister of Defence, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd) yesterday celebrated his 75th birthday.

A get-together was held at the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotels and Suites on Vicoria Isalnd, Lagos.

It was a gathering of frontline Nigerians in political and economic circles.

The senator representing Taraba South, Emmanuel Bwacha, noted that the celebration was significant not only to Taraba, the general’s home state, but also to Nigeria and African because the general is beyond the Nigerian nation.

Bwacha said: “The occasion is a celebration of God’s mercy and mercy on the life of General Danjuma, who has been so favoured by God in the political and economic landscape of the Nigerian nation in past decades. Having traversed the Nigerian landscape like a colossus that he is, he has every reason and his friends, family and admirers have every reason to celebrate this day with him. It is so unique. At 75, we can well say that he has paid his dues to the Nigerian nation state; he has paid his dues as a soldier, as a politician and as a businessman and as a father to so many.”

    Moyes celebrates Anichebe

Everton boss David Moyes admits the emergence of James Vaughan and Victor Anichebe was one of last season’s biggest positives.

The academy graduates were key factors in the club’s qualification for next season’s UEFA Cup after cementing places in the first-team squad.

Moyes told EvertonTV: “It has been a great boost to bring those two boys through. Victor kicked on in pre-season and did well in the earlier part of the season. James was struggling to jog following his bad knee injury and it was becoming frustrating for him the longer it went.

“We discussed putting him out on loan but in the end we stuck with him and he ended up finishing the season in great form.”

  • Kenyan community celebrates victory

    Kenyan community celebrates victory

Having her walking cane and smiling broadly, the step-grandmother of Barack Obama celebrated yesterday in Kogelo, the tiny Western Kenyan village, where people danced and rejoiced after the United States president won four more years in the White House.

Kogelo, a dirt-road town where children play soccer in bare feet, was the home of Barack Obama’s father, and claims several relatives of the president among its population. The family matriarch is Sarah Obama, who was married to the president’s late grandfather.

“Take the great job that people have given to you and lead them well,” Sarah Obama advised her relative by marriage after his victory. “They have shown immense love to have voted for you.”

Residents hoisted branches of green leaves, red plastic chairs and even one-speed bicycles into the air to celebrate Obama’s win.

“The community is happy. The community is waking up from their sleep to come and celebrate,” said Kennedy Rajula, the president’s cousin.

Sarah Obama is the second wife of Obama’s paternal grandfather. Obama referred to her as “Granny” in his memoir, “Dreams from My Father,” and described meeting her during his 1988 trip to his father’s homeland and their awkwardness as they struggled to communicate.

Kenya takes great pride in its association with Obama, and Prime Minister Raila Odinga told The Associated Press that the election victory was a great day for the U.S. and Kenya.

“Obama’s victory has proved that it was not a fluke the first time round, that the American society has changed, that the people of America have now, basically living the American dream of a people who are united by race, by religion, by ethnicity and so on,” Odinga said. “People are prepared to work together to build their country.”

Kenya has its own presidential election coming up in March. The country’s last vote in late 2007 turned devastatingly violent, and more than 1,000 people were killed. Many people in Kenya vote along tribal lines, adding to the tension, but Odinga said the U.S. vote showed that elections should be decided based on issues.

“This is what we should learn from these elections, American elections, and try to see if we cannot replicate it here in Kenya, that we move away from personality based campaigns or ethnic based campaigns and move toward issue-based campaigns,” Odinga said.

John Githongo, a former adviser to Kenya President Mwai Kibaki on ethics and governance who resigned and then exposed hundreds of millions of dollars in government corruption, said Obama enjoys “an unprecedented level of trust” among the people of the world, though he said there are some in Kenya who worry the U.S. will now begin cracking down on corruption and tribalism in Kenya. “Many leaders thrive on corruption and whipping up tribal sentiments to consolidate political support,” he said.

Eric Lugalia, a 31-year-old pilot, said he is excited Obama won again. “It also motivates us before our elections. Him being Kenyan, it motivates us to vote wisely for leaders who can bring change, unlike voting along tribal lines as we do.

Former Super Eagles Coach, Samson Siasia, has described the draw which places Nigeria in Group C as a good one by any standard for Super Eagles.

“It’s a good draw instead of being pitched against Cote d’ Voire or Ghana. I think we should be able to top this group and qualify to the next stage of the tournament.

“I know Nigeria could have a good tournament in South Africa with good preparations. The Coach (Stephen Keshi) has the material I mean good players that can deliver the goods with good preparation and support from everybody”, Siasia told SportingLife.

Other top Nigerian football stakeholders have also tipped Nigeria to qualify easily from the group.

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Director of Technical Emmanuel Ikpeme reacted to the draw, “The draw is okay. Just okay.”

Former Super Eagles defender Ajibade Babalade popularly known as Kunde warned about the danger of underrating the teams in Nigeria’s group.

“There are no minnows again in football. So it is going to be a tough group so we have to really prepare well. The preparations must start now, funds should not be a hindrance to Nigeria’s preparations,” the Shooting Stars Football Club Team Manager told SportingLife.

Clad in black jeans and red tops, the pupils had miniature flags which they waved while the programme lasted on the assembly ground.

Aside rendering various songs, and poetry, the pupils presented a playlet entitled: The way forward. It focused on how Nigeria could find her way out of the challenges of underdevelopment.

The Head Teacher, Mrs Yemi Ladeinde, said the event was packaged to encourage children, considered future leaders, to understand the Nigerian society and the roles they can play when they become leaders.

”It is important to make the future leaders understand more about where they belong to because some of them have been to other countries to see things, though they might be listening to bad things about the country, but they need to understand that it is not all that bad.

”At this stage when they are little, they had better understand and therefore plan how to make the country better if some of them became leaders in future.”

Pampers Director of Studies Mrs Phyl Ojudo said the aim of the programme was to teach the pupils patriotism.

”As portrayed in the drama staged by the pupils, some set of people believe that since independence the country has not in any way developed, but to some extent there is fair changes in development,” she said.

Nine-year-old Moyosoreoluwa Olatosi of Higher Grade 5 spoke about what she learnt from the programme.

”I understood more about the country, especially the second part of the drama which said Nigeria is not as bad as I usually heard, and that there is hope if everyone is ready to play their part,” she said.
