Celebrities storm Essence de Beauté’s launch

TOP female celebrities, including Mary Akpobome, wife of veteran comedian, Ali Baba and Chioma Ude, CEO of Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF), were among a galaxy of fashionistas who stormed the Nigerian unveil of the popular Marie Rosemene Paul St-Juste’s beauty product, Essence de Beauté.

The august gathering at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, on Sunday, was in honour of notable Biochemist and CEO of SomKolch Nigeria Ltd, Obiageli Ajaero, who secured the franchise for the brand in Nigeria.

Like a beauty colloquium organized in an informal setting, the launch witnessed women of different skin types who had used the products, taking turns to give rave testimonies. Also, many more came to seek counseling on any of the brands that could fit their skin requirements.

“My journey with Essence De Beauté began four years ago,” said an elated Ajaero, who revealed that she saw hell trying to get rid of dark spot scars she got from chicken pox. “Those choices increased the spots on my already blemished skin and increased the size of my facial pores. My sister, Chioma Ude, came to my rescue and introduced me to Essense de Beauté. With this amazing all-natural brand product made from fruits, vegetables and spring water, my skin, which had deteriorated so badly, improved overnight in texture and quality with an even blend,” she added.

Ajaero’s testimony was proof of love and passion for the product. No doubt, her convinction for the brand grew into business, for which she has since put aside other interests. A holder of Bachelor degree in Biochemistry, Ajaero had a four-year stint at the Consulate of France in diplomatic relations, from where she moved on to the banking industry in December 2004. She had a rapid rise to mid-management level. She resigned as a branch manager in the banking sector, with a wealth of experience in product marketing in the private, commercial and retail segments, bringing on board product evaluation, marketing strategy, supply chain management and sound management practices.

She warned her guests against using unverified skin products, which are capable of causing damage to the skin. “As unreal as it may sound, an amazing number of women in the middle and upper class of our society use creams that have been mixed for them, without knowledge of their chemical contents. Lots of these creams have harsh chemical (inclusive but not limited to) steroids which, when used at first, give the ladies a lovely glow and six months down the line and the texture and quality of the skin begin to deteriorate fast. In many cases, the skin begins to wear thin and one can see the colour of their veins. Then, others become prone to skin infections like ring worm and eczema. The list of damage possibilities to different skin types is endless. Besides, skin cancer is also another numbing reality check caused by the effects of these damaging chemicals,” she said.

Ude’s radiant skin was proof of what a patron of the product looks like. “Before I can say anything, what do you think of my skin?” she asked the crowd with a smile revealing adorable dimples.

Ude, who is also an executive director at SomKolch, corroborated what Ajaero said earlier about how the latter started off by scooping from her collection to cure chicken pox. In the words of the AFRIFF boss, Essence de Beauté is a story of inspiration. She revealed that, like Ajaero, the founder of the product, Marie, used to have a lot of problems with her skin and couldnt get help from different dermatologists until she found her own result and decided to share it with others.

”In 1994, Marie, with $500 and a dream, founded the company in a tiny apartment in Brooklyn. Inspired by her interest in beauty, she created her own line of skin care products, all formulated with pure, natural and biodegradable ingredients.

Marie, otherwise called Rosy, married her new ideas with the best features of traditional cosmetic departments over 15 years after. Marie’s original inspiration continues to guide Essence de Beauté Company. She is committed to quality, value, service and innovation, all with healthy skin and a healthy planet in mind”

Chairman of the company, Elvira Salleras, noted that the brand also has product that caters to men, with an easy daily regimens that improve skin appearance from first week, by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, hydrating dry skin, while controlling breakouts of oily skin.

    Celebrities storm Bowler Hats Bash

AMID glitz, glamour and a dose of panache, the maiden edition of Bowler Hats Bash (BHB) held August 3, at the upscale Niteshift Coliseum, Ikeja, Lagos. The fun filled evening of comedy and music saw several leading entertainers thrilled and dazzled revelers as both guests and performers.

Powered by Contacts Communications, the quartet of African China, Nigga Raw, Klint D’ Drunk and Elenu led the array of star performers at the evening of relaxation as they separately thrilled and rocked guests with hit songs and rich repertoire of exhilarating jokes.

The event reached a climax when the duo of Klint D’Drunk and his former music mate, Nigga Raw jointly performed their monster hit-Obodo, to the delight of the cheering and dancing crowd.

The trio alongside some of their colleagues including Funny Bone, Acapella, MC Senator, Danni B, Lanusoro and Baba D’ Baba raised the tempo of the bash. Other entertainers that also wowed the guests were: TJ Sax, the cerebral 10-year-old saxophonist and OzzyBosco, the energetic six-year-old precocious music star cum multiple award-winner.

Interestingly, the African Heritage Band, led by Chijioke was also on ground dishing out live music as well as assisting music stars wishing to perform live on the Coliseum’s expansive and revered stage.

Commenting on Bowler Hats Bash, its founder and boss of Contacts Communication, Azuh Amatus, disclosed that his love and passion for hats brought about the highly commendable initiative.

“We thank God that this debut edition was a huge success and we thank all those that made it possible. It was borne out of my passion for bowler hats and fedora, which I wear a lot. It was designed to be an annual event for stars, celebs and the upwardly mobile coming together to relax, enjoy, network and unwind in a conducive and fun filled atmosphere where there will be music, comedy and more,” Amatus said.

  • Celebrities and their strange baby names

celebrities are a special breed of people who seem to live in a world of their own. And an odd world it must be especially considering the outlandish names they give their offsprings. First it was music couple Beyonce and her husband Jay Z who named their little one, Blue Ivy. What were they thinking naming their child after a colour and a plant in a combo that sounds like a name of a stripper at a club like some people wondered?

Now we have North West, the name reality TV star Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend Kanye gave their new baby girl. The name sounds more like a direction or a location on a map than a name for a child. Some Nigerians have also wondered why she chose to name her baby after a geo-political zone in the country. The name has generated controversy on the internet with posters poking fun at such a moniker.

    These are a few samples:

‘North West? Did Kim give birth to a baby or a compass?’

‘We need to successfully abolish bullying before North West gets to 4th grade.’

North’s name follows in the tradition of celebrities giving crazy and often bizarre names to their offsprings; names that make one wonder; what were they thinking? Some of the really crazy and unusual ones include:

Audio Science (daughter of actress Shannyn Sossamon)

Pilot Inspector (son of actor Jason Lee)

Harper Seven (footballer David and Victoria Beckham’s daughter)

Moxie Crime fighter (daughter of U.S comedian Penn Jillette)

    Egypt (Alicia Keys’ son)

Denim and Diezel (sons of singer Toni Braxton and Keri Lewis)

Ocean and True (son and daughter respectively of Forrest Whitaker of the last King of Scotland fame)

We might laugh at these names and think these celebrities are mad, drunk or simply stupid for giving their babies such crazy names. But what about the names we bear in this country as well? Where I come from (the Niger-Delta) must hold the record for having some of the wackiest names in the country. I have an elderly relative for instance who named four of her children: Nigeria, Independence, Tough, Lagos respectively (no explanation needed as they are self-explanatory enough).

Then there are children named after alcoholic beverages: Brandy, Whiskey (as in Ovie-Whiskey), Heineken, Johnny (Walker), Chelsea etc. Those not from the region, hear these names and laugh. They conclude that we drink a lot that’s why we love these names. My people will argue that it’s because of the weather which can get pretty cold especially in the rural areas of the region during the rainy season. They need these drinks and the popular ogogoro to keep warm, they claim. Whatever.

We also love colours particularly in Rivers State. So we have names like White, Green, Blue, Brown, Yellowe, Purple and others; these are stylishly combined with other names to get such monikers like Karibi-Whyte, Blue-Jack, Tom-Yellowe, Allwell-Brown etc. I had a primary school mate in Port-Harcourt in those days named Ebite Green. Whenever we wanted to make her angry, we would call her any other colour except her name like Ebite Blue, Ebite Yellow etc. This used to make her really mad and fights often broke out as a result.

Top personalities, famous people and places are among favorite names people give their children in the region. The most popular are Gowon, Awolowo, Queen (Elizabeth), Chamberlain, Biafra and even the infamous Hitler. Other unusual names from the zone include Government (the most famous being the retired militant Tompolo), Conference, Manager, Limejuice, Taiga, Lawyer, Baby (if you come to my village, don’t be surprised to see an 80 year-old woman bearing Baby), Vote (named for babies born during elections like one of my sisters), Blacky (for babies who are as dark as the back of a pot), Annulment (perhaps when Babangida annulled the June 12 elections?), Odji (which in Urhobo translates to thief), Erhurhu (Dustbin), Obukoenyuvwevwi (Backyard) Okpikebe (Big backside) and so on.

Seriously, the parents who gave their children some of these names must have been under the influence of ogogoro during the naming ceremony or what do you think?
