Autopsy report clears cleric of labourer’s death

The autopsy on Dogo, a Hausa labourer, who died while clearing the soak-away pit of Celestial Church of Christ, Overcomers Parish, Ajah, Lagos in June 2023, has absolved the church shepherd, Venerable Superior Evangelist Aso James, and his two assistants of culpability.

According to Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chief Superintendent of Police Benjamin Hundeyin, the result of the autopsy exonerates the cleric and his assistants, who had been victims of a mob attack shortly after Dogo was found dead in the  pit.

“What I can confirm is that the case has been to court and the people that we (the police) took to court are people that we found culpable of arson by setting the church on fire, assault by attacking the shepherd and stealing. We do not take people that we have not found culpable to court. The shepherd was not taken to court for anything. He wasn’t found culpable of anything. The autopsy did not indict him.  If the autopsy had indicted him, definitely, we would have taken him to court,” Hundeyin said.

He added: “The reason I am not talking specifically about the autopsy is because it is written in medical jargon, which I cannot really interpret. But the interpretation we got from our medical officers  confirmed that the shepherd or any other person at that, is not culpable.”

  • Inside story of Cele priest’s assassination during church service

Inside story of Cele priest’s assassination during church service

One week after the dastard killing of the founder and priest of a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) parish by unidentified gunmen inside his church in Idiroko area of Ipokia Local Government Area,  Ogun State, insiders who are members of the church and were present on the day of the incident have revealed the last moments of the 54-year-old priest and details about how the assailants disguised as members of the church in white garment to snuff  out life from the priest, reports KUNLE AKINRINADE.

Details have emerged as to how unidentified gunmen killed a priest inside a parish of the Celestial Church of Christ in Idiroko area of Ipokia Local Government, Ogun State on Sunday, January 19.

The victim, Venerable Superior Evangelist Abayomi Adetula, was also a senior officer of So SAFE Corps, the local security outfit established by the Ogun State Government.

Contrary to reports in the mainstream and online media, the name of the church founded by the deceased is the Celestial Church of Christ, Hebrew Cathedral along Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko.

However, insiders who witnessed the gory scene gave graphic details of Adetula’s last moments and how his killers disguised as members of Celestial Church, wearing white garments just like other members that attended the Sunday service.

He said the gunmen numbering six came in a Hilux Van and that they did not open fire on Adetula until the sound of the jingling bell as the order of service requires members of the church to bow down three times to the sound of the bell as instructed by service conductor.

The source who witnessed the scene said contrary to reports that the killers used an axe to attack Adetula, they used the butt of their gun to batter Adetula’s face.

The source said that contrary to some media reports, Adetula was not killed while he was preaching on the pulpit.

“Baba’s (Adetula’s) killers disguised as members at the commencement of service.

“They came in a black Hilux van with security light and tinted glass.

“Nobody suspected that they were on a deadly mission because they appeared in white robes like other members.

“They claimed they came from Ilashe, one of the neighbouring communities in Ipokia Local Government.

“One of the gunmen knelt close to Baba Adetula when the service conductor sounded the bell and bowed his head twice to the sounding of the bell.

“The man waited till the bell was sounded the third time, got on his feet before Baba Adetula and brought out a double-barrel rifle hidden under his garment.

“He first hit Baba Adetula in the face with the butt of the gun and shot him directly in the face while other members of the gang shot at him from the back as Baba Adetula asked them why they wanted to kill him.

“They bludgeoned his face with the gun butt and continued to shoot at him.

“Other members of the gang were stationed outside and they warned members who wanted to rescue Baba Adetula to steer clear or be ready to lose their lives as well.

“An engineer handling music equipment in the church, named Korede, initially confronted one of the gunmen with blows and later jumped over the fence and ran for his life.

“The gunmen left in their Hilux van after ensuring that Adetula had died.’’

The eyewitness said members of the parish who had fled the church when the gunmen opened fire on Adetula returned to pick his teeth and expended bullets from the floor. The items were taken to the State General Hospital in Ilaro, where his mangled body was deposited in the morgue.

Another eyewitness described the assailants as young boys in their 30s, adding that they were hooded when it was time to execute their dastard mission.

The witness said: ‘’I came early to the church in my usual manner and met two of the gunmen in white garments outside.

“When the service began, we were singing the Yarah Sara hymn when three of the assailants dressed in the brother-ranked white robes of Celestial Church entered the parish.

“They did not appear suspicious at all because they were young boys.

“Baba Adetula even greeted two of them who stood outside on the premises and they returned the greeting.

“I thought the boys (gunmen) had come to worship with us, not knowing they were here for a deadly mission.

‘’Baba Adetula then asked me to take some fuel from the keg in the booth of his car to power the church’s generator.

“I was pouring the fuel into the generator at the back of the church building when pandemonium broke out inside the church after the gunmen opened fire on Baba (Adetula).

“While Baba Adetula tried to escape from his assailants, one of the gunmen stationed outside kicked him down and they rained bullets on him.

“By then, the gunmen had worn masks and we couldn’t see their faces anymore.

“Our music equipment engineer initially confronted the gunmen and tried to stop them. But he beat a retreat and fled after they pointed the gun at him and threatened to kill him.

“One of the gunmen stood with Baba Adetula and constantly used the butt of his gun to hit him while his colleagues shot at him at close range until Baba Adetula died in a pool of blood.

“So, Baba was not killed while he was preaching, because the Sunday service had barely started when the assassins entered the church disguised as worshippers.’’

“The gunmen did not attack or dismember Baba Adetula with an axe. Instead, it was their gun butt they used to bludgeon his face and head badly to the extent that it was difficult to recognise Baba after they finished him off with sporadic gunshots and left his mangled body in a pool of blood.’’

In a statement, Omolola Odutola, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, said the gunmen also used an axe to hit the pastor’s head to confirm that he was dead.

“Police officers arrived quickly at the scene and discovered one Yomi Adetula, a 54-year-old man, lying face up in a pool of blood that stained his white celestial garment,” the statement reads.

“Upon closer inspection, his body was found to be riddled with bullets, and his head was severely damaged with an axe to confirm that he was indeed dead.

“During the police investigation, it was revealed that three men entered the church, brandished a long double-barreled gun, aimed at their target, and fired a shot that caused chaos, and the assailants escaped.

“Through police efforts, the body was transported to the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro.”

Odutola said no arrest had been made, adding that the command would ensure the arrest of the fleeing suspects.

Meanwhile, in a post on his Facebook page when the news of the tragic killing broke penultimate Sunday, an investigative journalist and Founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), Fisayo Soyombo, claimed that the late Adetula was a witness to a suit between the FIJ and an Ogun-based businessman, Ibrahim Dende.

The post reads: “Adetula is one of the witnesses listed by FIJ Nigeria in its defence of the libel lawsuit filed by IBD Dende in response to FIJ’s undercover investigation and the subsequent documentary on smuggling, and the ‘Good Morning Nigeria Customs’ tweets by its founder,” Soyombo said.

Adetula’s killing has caused panic in the Idiroko community and its environs as outraged residents condemned the killing, asking police authorities to fish out the assailants and bring them to justice.

A resident and member of a parish of the Celestial Church of Christ in Idiroko, Wale Alao, demanded justice, saying: ‘’We are still in shock over the killing of Mr. Adetula who is a committed community leader and priest in charge of a Celestial Church of Christ in this town.

“Since last Sunday when the incident happened, many members of this community are yet to come to terms with the killing.

“Palpable fear has gripped the town and more importantly, worshippers at Adetula’s CCC Hebrew Cathedral are contemplating moving to other Celestial Church parishes as they are hunted by the trauma that comes with witnessing the killing of Adetula.

“The incident has signaled other churches to be more security conscious and not take every stranger as a worshipper with good intentions.

“Churches must put in place adequate security measures to safeguard the lives of worshippers.

“However, the only thing that can boost the confidence of residents is for security agencies to apprehend the culprits and prosecute them for justice.’’

  • My father had three wives when God called him- Oshoffa

Son of the founder of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) and Shepherd of CCC International Headquarters Church, Superior Evangelist Olatosho Oshoffa, has lambasted Nigerians who criticise his late father, Rev. Samuel Bilewu- Oshoffa, for marrying thirteen wives.

The 49-year-old evangelist, in an exclusive interview with our reporter, explained his late father was a humanitarian and a spiritual man to the core, who was already a polygamist before God called him.

He noted the late Oshoffa never had a concubine besides his thirteen wives.

Olatosho, who was recently appointed the head of the International Headquarters Church, wondered why critics of his father would question God’s judgment who had found him worthy to found a church that has remained vibrant after 72 years.

His words: “The ways of God are mysterious. God is not human. If Papa could have three wives and God would still find him worthy to found Celestial Church of Christ, who are we to judge?

“He had three wives when God called him and asked him to found CCC which is still a vibrant spiritual church today.

“If God could find him among three wives and ask him to found CCC and 72 years after, the church still exists vibrantly in the world, we have so many churches that have been founded by people and they don’t exist anymore.

“God had left those that had no wife, those that had gotten one wife, God had not made them founder of CCC.”

He continued:” God is not interested in hypocrisy. If you want to marry ten wives, let your family know you are married to ten wives officially.

“If you say you are married to one wife and you have 10 to 20 concubines, it is after your death, at your burial, that many women would claim you are the father of their children.

“What type of embarrassment is that? That was what Oshoffa avoided. All the wives were inside.

“He never had a concubine outside. The children knew one another and I am proud of him anytime. I have no regrets at all.”

On his appointment as new head of the International Headquarters of the Church, Oshoffa expressed gratitude to God and the Pastor and Spiritual Head of the church, Rev. Emmanuel Oshoffa, for the rare opportunity to serve, adding that he was a product of grace and mercy.

He however dismissed insinuations in some quarters that he lacks the experience to head the International Headquarters Church.

According to him, God had formed him locally and internationally for the tasks ahead.

He said he was the de facto shepherd of the mother parish of the church in Germany and a parish of the church in Dakar Senegal from 1993 to 1997 and 1997 to 2001 respectively because of the confidence reposed in him by shepherds of the parishes.

  • Man arrested for stealing pants in Ondo

A-25-year old man, Ojonugwa Adejoh has been arrested by the Ondo state police command for allegedly stealing pants belonging to his brothers’ wife for rituals.

Adejoh was arrested alongside with one Prophet Olajide Ogunleye (53), of Celestial Church of Christ, ‘Ibanujemidopin’, Uso, in Owo local government area of Ondo state.

Parading the suspects in Akure, the state capital on Wednesday, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Femi Joseph, a Superintendent of Police(SP) said they were arrested last week following the report by the victim.

Adejoh said, “I went to the prophet to pray for me because of my work when I got there he asked me the type of my work and I told him I am  panel beater, he said he wanted to pray for me asking me to open my hands and  put something  on it for me to shallow and prayed for me before leaving the place.

“But when I got home I don’t know what I was doing again I just started looking for my brother wife’s pants and when I got the pants I went back to him. I didn’t steal the pants for rituals. Hours after, my brother’s wife raised an alarm that she didn’t see her pants and I was arrested. When the police arrested me, I was taken to Uso police station before they transferred me to Akure.

“Two pants belong to my brother’s wife and three others belong to my younger sister are in my possession”.

The prophet however denied the allegation, saying he didn’t ask him to go and steal the pants.

Joseph however enjoined ladies and women in the state to guard their under wears jeolously, saying  “this is a very dangerous phenomenon now”.

He said  “we are using this opportunity to enjoy our ladies and women that this is a very dangerous phenomenon now, we have to guard whatever we are putting on as underwear.

“Parents should also warn their children particularly female ones to be very careful where they keep their wears.

The command also arrested two local security guards for alleged attempt to rape one woman (name withheld) who was coming back from church around 8pm along popular Agbogbo road, in Akure.

The suspects, Daniel John (25) and Longbap Bongven (25) from Plateau state according to police spokesman said they normally hide somewhere around the area whenever they wanted to perpetuate their acts.

  • The ‘Celestial Church of Christ must know the truth,’ by J. R. Omotosho, is economising the truth

I read with much interest an article, entitled ‘Celestial Church of Christ Must know the Truth,’ authored by Senior Evangelist J. R. Omotosho, an Officer of the Order of the Niger, and published in the Saturday edition of The Nation on December 22, 2018. I read it with much interest for various reasons. I know the author in person and his person. I know him as a Superior Evangelist in the world of the Celestial Church and not as a Senior Evangelist. Consequently, I was compelled to seek an understanding of who has this identity again. When I espied the contents of the article, I discovered that it is the same Superior Evangelist John Rotimi Omotosho. Why has he chosen to be addressed as Senior Evangelist and not as Superior Evangelist which is more befitting and of a higher status? He meritoriously earned it more than four years ago. Since he opts to be addressed as a Senior Evangelist, I address him as such in establishing the aspects of untruths and half-truths in his ‘Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) must know the truth,’ in this right of reply.

Secondly, I am not only the CCC Pastor-appointed Director of Public Relations for the CCC worldwide, but also a Member of and Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the CCC worldwide. In this capacity, I am necessarily a custodian of all relevant information about the CCC, as well as about developments in the Church. More so that Senior Evangelist Omotosho has mentioned names, including mine, there is the need to take interest in the article. In spite of this, it is  not my intention to respond in my official capacity but on the basis of my name being consciously and maliciously defamed.

Thirdly, and perhaps more importantly, what appears to be or what constitutes the truth for Senior Evangelist is quite far from the truth. He has not only been acting on the basis of figment of imagination but has also presented to the Nigerian public only the half-truths. In giving the full truths of the matter, using the various documents he attached to his article, there is the need to go beyond economising the truths or making unscientific affirmations on the basis of half-truths. Hence, we will simply reply to the aspects of misinformation here, while the other matters are left to the court for determination. The issues in question are already under police investigation and court prosecution.

Untruths and truths: The dynamics of Omotosho’s probem

Senior Evangelist Omotosho’s (a.k.a Jorotom’s) article is informed by three main dynamics. The first is his belief in a divine mandate for the CCC, which is to ‘ensure good direction, development, and peace for the Church.’ But in what capacity should the good direction, development and peace be? To be in a position to ensure compliance in any given stratum of society cannot but require the exercise of authority. Authority giving cannot but also be done in a vertical form and not horizontally. Compliance can only occur in an horizontal setting if much of persuasion and convincing arguments are allowed, without which the peers may find them difficult to accept. Jorotom never sees any goodness in the opinion of others. Explained differently, Jorotom has many people who are superior to him in the church and to whom he cannot give marching orders. In fact, he does not recognise that there are low and high spirits and that lower spirits submit to higher spirits. The Bible is very clear on this.

The second dynamic, and in the same vein, is the holier- or better-than-thou disposition of Senior Evangelist Omotosho in the various informal meetings of the CCC Board of Trustees. It is the version of his own argument or submission that was the only truth. Any opposition to his submission was always fraught with hostility. He always hid under the title of his OON to wrongly believe that whatever he says was correct and should be accepted by all others without query. Other members, in unison, did not always agree with this, hence Jorotom has been left fighting alone in whatever he considered necessary to be done in advancing the interests of the Church.

The third dynamic is his wrong belief that he has more right as a member of the CCC Board of Trustees than any other member. All members of the Board, seven in all, have equal stakes. In fact, the Constitution of the CCC provides that all the Trustees of the Church should be permanent members of the Pastor-in-Council but the appointment of any trustee is subject to the whims and caprices of the Pastor. The Board of Trustees, acting together, is the legal representative of the Church and the highest level of authority recognised by the Laws of Nigeria.

The Constitution describes the Pastor as the Ultimate Spiritual Head of the Church. Many people misinterpret this to imply that the leadership is restricted only to the spiritual headship of the Church. The Constitution should be rightly interpreted to mean that there can be many appointed representatives of the Pastor heading the organisation of some spiritual activities. However, the ultimate head, in terms of structure of authority, is the Pastor, and that is in the person of Reverend Emmanuel Mobiyina Friday Oshoffa, the son of the founder of the CCC.

The consensus is that the Pastor is the Head and overall Head of the Church in all ramifications. Section 108 of the CCC Constitution has it that ‘the Pastor as the Ultimate Spiritual Head of the CCC worldwide, shall be vested with the sole ultimate and unchallengeable authority on all matters affecting church life, be it planning, organisation, doctrinal standards and the spread of doctrines, education, legislation or discipline, the provisions of the Constitution notwithstanding.’ The problem with Jorotom is that, he is not only challenging this provision, but he is also doing so frontally and with uncivilised disrespect in his relationship with the Pastor. This is evident in his article.

For instance, take a cursory look at his various pretensions in his article. He wrote that ‘(he) called for a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Church…’, that he had ‘earlier summoned my fellow BOT members to a meeting in BABA BANJO’s house.’ The Pastor is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. How can he summon a meeting of the Board without the blessing of the Pastor? The calls for meetings are illegal and this is one of the major reasons he has not been able to enjoy the support of other trustees. The Pastor is the only person who can direct me as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees to convene any formal meeting. The meetings referred to were, therefore, at best, informal consultations. Jorotom was told about this but he still prefers to unnecessarily arrogate to himself the powers that are not constitutionally provided for, and which all other members resisted. This is what the general public should first begin to understand in terms of his own version of the truth.

    Which truth has he revealed

The first truth that Senior Evangelist Omotosho wants the public to know is that he is a good man working in the interest of the Church. I have no qualms about this. In the Celestial Church of Christ of today, the contributions of Senior Evangelist Omotosho and Superior Evangelist Pius Olarewau are great and worthy of emulation. However, the contributions of Senior Evangelist Omotosho are indisputably coming behind those of Superior Evangelist Olarewaju. The contributions of Omotosho are generally known because of the publicity often attached to them and this is evident again in his article: recalling of funding of the inauguration of Reverend Emmanuel Mobiyina Oshoffa; building of a ‘befitting office in Ketu in place of the old one which is far below the standard expected of the height of the Celestial Church of Christ,’ etc. Olarewaju has the non-noise making life-style, and therefore not many people know much about his contributions to the growth and development of the CCC. He has, for instance, built many CCC parishes in Nigeria and established many in Europe and America.

He is currently building an international conference centre for the Church in Kilometre 53 along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The secretariat being built in Ketu by Omotosho does not compare well with what Olarewaju has put, and is currently putting in place. More interestingly, every 28-30 December, he holds a CCC revival crusade on the open fields of the Baptist Academy along Ikorodu Road. It is therefore very ridiculous to suggest that an Olarewaju who is donating money to grow the Church on daily basis is also stealing his own money. What will be the purpose for this?

This question has to be raised because Omotosho says he has ‘inclination to fight this anomaly… (and that) except the needful is done now, Mobiyina, Pius and their cohorts will pull down the church and vandalize the good work of the pastor/finder.’ Omotosho does not need to fight for the Pastor/founder. He should be more concerned about the living, and not the Saint already living with God. And true, if we have to go beyond myopic bigotry, no individual will want to invest hard-won resources on the growth and development of a church and also at the same time be seeking to destroy his investments.

The truth here is that Pius Olarewaju has shown the general public that he was a champion or winner in 2017 when he advised that there was the need to change the strategy of fund raising, the approach to building the CCC Cathedral that had been on-going for more than three decades. He also showed the world in 2018 that he is also an over-comer. This largely explains the success achieved within one year in the completion of the construction of the Cathedral, which has been restructured into a Basilica of first of its kind. Imeko, in Afon Local Government Area in Ogun State is now playing host to a World Celestial Pilgrimage Centre in the making. In fact, it is another Jerusalem in the making.

If by the divine mandate of Senior Evangelist Omotosho, he was told about the ‘disapproval by God of the handling of Imeko project by Vita Construction Company,’ allegedly because of ‘the recent thunder strike which brought down the Imeko building,’ what is the new message, on the basis of his ‘divine mandate,’ now that the Imeko building has not only been completed but was commissioned for use during the December 2018 Convocation?

And more importantly, Senior Evangelist Omotosho wants to inform the public that he had instituted a court case in the Federal High Court against my person, Pius Olarewaju, and one other. The charges levied are those of ‘conspiracy, forgery, fraudulent and unlawful diversion of money.’ And perhaps most importantly, he wants to show that ‘Pius and his allies, rather than facing the charge filed against them, have been running helter-skelter evading service of the charge on them and romancing high authorities to muffle the charge.’

The truths here are simple to understand and are not far-fetched. Senior Evangelist Omotosho does not need any public noise making for now. What he needs to do now is to seek to provide evidence of the documents forged, particulars of money diverted and the documents on which the forgery is located. Since the matter has been referred to the court, Jorotom should no longer be afraid of his own action.

What the public should know is that Jorotom is only seeking cover up and survival, following his indictment by the Office of the Inspector General of Police. On two different occasions, all the various allegations levied against Pius Olarewaju, Bola Akinterinwa and others by Senior Evangelist Omotosho were already investigated and the Police gave a very clean bill in both cases to the accused. If, we, the accused, have not taken the matter to the extent of court prosecution, it is because the Pastor, Reverend Mobiyina Oshoffa, does not want any member of the Church to  avenge  for himself.  The Pastor strongly believes that Jorotom will sooner or later come back into his senses and rejoin his peers. This is the bitter truth. Left to the accused, the story is different.

What is noteworthy again, and perhaps disturbing, is that, the same Nigeria Police, which carried out investigations on Jorotom’s allegations and indicted the Imeko Building Committee, chaired by Senior Evangelist Omotosho, is the same Police that has charged us to court on the same allegations again after two separate investigations. When Jorotom came up with his first round of allegations, we were cleared. Jorotom alleged then that the Police had taken money from us. He petitioned the Inspector General of Police, who was prompted to set up another panel of investigators. The report of the second panel of investigators also threw Jorotom’s claims into the dustbin of history. Truth is indestructible. It can only be distorted. It is not known in history where any battle or war on the truth has succeeded. The police records are there for the general public to request for within the framework of the Public Information Act. Truth is constant. How the same Nigeria Police is again coming out to charge the accused of forgery, conspiracy, fraud, is what the Nigerian public should ask and also be more interested in. As the matter is before the court, I will not say more than this here.

On the issue of running helter-skelter,  ‘evading service of the charge,’ the truth again is that I have been served court notice and summon and I signed for them. This, again, is verifiable. When a holder of a national honour, OON, has to descend so low to the extent of having to call what is green, white, and thereafter also frivolously making serious allegations based on assumptions, and even making judgmental conclusions before the court ever hears the case, there is the need to really query the basis of giving a national honour to people like Jorotom. Making confirmations on the basis of dreams or imaginations are not befitting of a holder of an OON.

Pending the final determination of the matter in the court, I want to state categorically here that, if we are to count ten honest Nigerians, I am one of them. In my hand over note to the Office of President Muhammadu Buhari at the end of my tenure as Director General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in 2015, I also clearly stated that I never stole any Government money and never allowed any room for stealing or public embezzlement and that if we were looking for ten honest Nigerians, I was undoubtedly one of them. I still remain the same Bola Akinterinwa. I am what I am today because I chose to be honest and patriotic. I fight societal ills tooth and nail with my very little resources.

So, let us all wait for the court’s prosecution and pronouncement on the matter. Meanwhile, I, and, in fact, Pius Olarewaju, without scintilla of doubt, hereby remain builders and not destroyers of the Church and are ready for any court prosecution because truth is constant, because we do not have any skeleton in our own cupboards, and most importantly, because the CCC, under the administration of Reverend Mobiyina Oshoffa, is witnessing unprecedented progress in all dimensions, many non-Africans are joining the Church in both Europe and America.

Finally, Senior Evangelist Omotosho has published many documents on which he never made any comments. What really is the intent and purpose of publishing an avalanche of documents that cannot speak for themselves? Evidence giving should go beyond mere presentation of documents. The whole documents, to those who can espy them, only constitute an expression of myopia and self-indictment. No truth has actually been shown in his write-up. Jorotom should therefore stop frolicking around in the media with figments of imagination and allow both the court processes and judgments to prevail.

Nigeria@57: Celestial admonishes Nigerians to seek God

The Head Pastor of the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) Worldwide, Ogunlana St, Ijesha-Tedo, Pastor Josiah Owodunni, on Sunday admonished Nigerians to seek the kingdom of God as Nigeria turns 57.
Owodunni told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that Oct. 1 was a day of thanksgiving because of Nigeria’s 57th Independence anniversary, which also marks the CCC’s 70th anniversary.
“In celebration of these two anniversaries, I advice people to seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, so that all other things shall be added unto them.
“I urge them to desist from pursuing worldly things which have no significant benefit to both the physical and the spiritual self,’’ he said.
Evang. Lawrence Afolabi, a member of the church, urged all Nigerians to tolerate one another and work for the progress and development of the nation.
“Nigeria is endowed with a lot of mineral resources and human capital to make this country one of the greatest nations in the world.
“Therefore, I urge every Nigerian to come together and stand in unity so that we can make this nation a formidable force to be reckoned with,’’ Afolabi said.
Meanwhile, Mrs Bola Obiyomi, a senior elder of the church, prayed that God would continue to strengthen President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts in the fight against corruption.
“The President has made significant impact in his efforts to curb corruption in the country and I believe that gradually, the process shall be perfected,’’ she said.
Obiyomi also lauded the numerous programmes organised by the present administration in terms of creating youth empowerment programmes for the purpose of imbibing a self-sustenance culture in young Nigerians.

Deeper Life to pay Celestial Church N5m for trespass

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division has upheld a Lagos High Court judgment ordering the Registered Trustees of Deeper Christian Life Ministry (DCLM) to pay N5 million as damages for trespass on land owned by the Celestial Church of Christ (CCC).

CCC had, through its representative, Joseph Ebhodaghe, sued DCLM over a disputed land measuring approximately 1055.864 square meters, situated at Mulero area of Agege and registered as No. 75 Volume 2004T at the Lagos State Land Registry, Ikeja.

At the High Court, Justice Candide-Johnson in a judgment delivered on January 17, 2014, declared Celestial Church as the rightful owner of the disputed land and awarded N5m as damages against Deeper Life.

The court also granted a perpetual injunction restraining DCLM, its agents or servants from further trespass on the disputed land.

Dissatisfied, DCLM, through its lawyer, Gabriel Akigbe, appealed against the judgment and urged the court to set it aside on the grounds that the trial judge was in error with regard to the documentary and oral evidence placed before the court.

But, in a unanimous decision, the appellate court comprising Justice Chinwe Iyizoba (presiding), Justice Yargata Nimpar and Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo held that the appeal was unmeritorious and dismissed same accordingly.

In her lead judgment, Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo resolved all the six issues in contention in favour of the respondent.

Her Lordship observed that both parties traced their title ownership to the Olalabi-Sulu family.
