    30 suspected cultists arrested in Delta

    Suspected cultists were Tuesday arrested by men of the Nigeria Police, Irri, Isoko South Police Division, Delta State following their alleged involvement in cult activities and related vices.

    It was gathered that the suspects who were members of different cult groups in the community were arrested at about 3.30 am in an attempt to attack one of their members who had recently renounced his membership in the community.

    A source who spoke on the ground of anonymity said, “He was in police custody and because he renounced membership of his cult group, his cult members were going after him, so he has to raise an alarm.

    He identified over 30 of his cult members that were arrested,

    The Chairman of the Irri Community Development Committee, Mr. Goddey Igorigo who addressed newsmen at Irri community, condemned cultism in the area and said the community was putting in place other measures to stop the excesses and the menace of cultism in the community.

    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Celestina Kalu, confirmed the arrests and said they were already on the issue.

    Police kill suspected robber in Delta

    The Delta State Police Command has killed a suspected robber in a gun battle at Ogwashi-Uku, the headquarters of Aniocha South Local Government Area.

    A statement yesterday by police spokesman, Celestina Kalu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the suspect, with his accomplices, were allegedly robbing residents of Plantation Hostel, at Ogbe-Ofu Quarters in Ogwashi-Uku.

    The statement said the police division in the town was alerted and its officers went to the crime scene.

    The police were said to have engaged the robbers in a shootout, in which the suspect was seriously injured. The others reportedly escaped.

    The suspect reportedly died on the way to the hospital.

    The statement said: “On December 7, at 21.40hrs (9.40pm), the police at Ogwashi-Uku Division received information that robbers were robbing the residents of Plantation Hostel at Ogbe-Ofu Quarters in Ogwashi-Uku.”

    “Following the information, a patrol team was despatched to the scene. On sighting the policemen, the robbers opened fire on them, and in the ensuing gun duel, one of the hoodlums was fatally wounded while the other escaped. The injured suspect died on the way to the hospital.

    “Items recovered from the hoodlums include a locally made cut-to-size gun with a live and two expended cartridges.

    “Also, efforts are on to apprehend the fleeing suspects.”

     

  • Man arrested for ‘hacking’ wife to death in Delta

    The Delta State police command has arrested one Michael Akpore, a native of Urhiephron community in Ughelli South council area of the state, for allegedly hacking his wife to death.

    The Nation gathered that Akpore reported his crime to the Jeremi Divisional Police Station last Thursday.

    According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Delta State police command, Celestina Kalu, Akpore had confessed to luring his wife, a 32-year old Julie, to the bush along Iwhrekan/Ekakpamren Road, where he macheted her till she died.

    Akpore claimed to have killed his wife over alleged infidelity.

    “The suspect killed his wife because the deceased confessed that she was having extra marital affairs. He was promptly arrested, crime scene visited and corpse of the woman recovered and deposited at the Jeremi Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

    “The motorcycle in which he conveyed the deceased to the bush was also taken to the station. The machete is being looked for and preliminary investigation is on,” the police spokesperson said.

  • Two die in gun fight in Delta

    Two people-the Chairman of the vigilance group at Igbudu market, Kpufman Migagan, and an assailant -were killed yesterday during a gunfight at Otokutu Junction in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

    Sources said some gunmen ambushed the car, conveying Migagan and his friends to Warri.

    They said: “It was like a movie scene. The gunmen shot at the vehicle and the occupants responded.

    “ In the end, there were two casualties, Migagan and one of the gunmen, who died on the spot.

    Police spokesperson Celestina Kalu said she had been briefed. The bodies have been deposited at a mortuary in Udu.

  • Customary court president abducted

    THE President of a Customary Court in Delta State, Mrs. Loretta Omeze, has been kidnapped.

    The kidnappers are demanding N20 million for her release.

    Mrs. Omeze, who is the President of Ibusa Customary Court in Oshimili North Local Government Area, was abducted on Agbor-Asaba expressway by Umunede in Ika North-East Local Government Area.

    An eyewitness said the victim stopped to buy fruits at Umunede when a Toyota Camry with four armed men intercepted her vehicle and whisked her away.

    Police spokesmanCelestina Kalu said the victim’s vehicle with registration number DTSJ 93 A has been recovered, adding that the police are on the hoodlums’ trail.

    Delta State has experienced high profile kidnapping lately as lawmakers, businessmen, sportsmen and civil servants, doctors, judges were specially targeted.

    The House of Assembly in December 2012 passed into law the State Anti-Kidnapping and Anti-Terrorism bill.

    The law ran into hitches after Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan refused to assent the bill, necessitating vetoing by the lawmakers in April, last year.

    The law prescribes death penalty for kidnap suspects and destruction of property of kidnappers.

  • Police foil ambush in Delta

    Policemen yesterday in Delta State foiled an attack on a van conveying two male suspects to court.

    Police spokesman Celestina Kalu said the suspects were being conveyed to a magistrate’s court in Oleh, Isoko South Local Government by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

    The incident occurred on the Oloh-Ogwashi road near Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government.

    In the ensuing battle, the two suspects were hit. They died at the hospital.

    Ms Kalu said the suspects, Efe Edehki and Ogaga Enueme, were to be arraigned for alleged conspiracy and kidnapping.

    The suspects had in March kidnapped Mrs. Vivian Obonyano , who was on her way from church on the Asaba-Ase Road.

    The victim has been released.
