  • Education Policy Initiative: Council boss, community leader call for Understanding

The Labour union Movement in Oyo State and concerned stakeholders in the education sector have been called upon to see the recent education policy initiative that called for private intervention in development of public schools as the major source of funding from the federal purse has been dwindling overtime.

The Caretaker Chairman, Iseyin local Government, Alh saheed Adejare  Alaran said this at his office while answering questions from reporters on the proposed public-private partnership on education in Oyo State as, according to him, education is so vital and with the current financial situation in the country, should not be left to the government alone.

Alh. Alaran who called on the leadership of Nigerian Labour Congress {N.L.C} to see reasons in having a roundtable approach to the current feud between workers and government to foster solutions to the problem of salary and other allowances owed workers by government, stressing that no amount of bickering could bring solution unless the two parties meet to draw up leeways to facilitate ways forward adding that the only way to help restore education glory in the State is for private bodies, alumni, corporate organizations among others to intervene.

“The education sector in our State has received so much attention that one would not have envisaged the present conditions of our schools and their infrastuctures but the cause is in the number of schools in the State, Iseyin here alone has about two hundred primary schools that are also jostling for attention like the secondary schools that are in the middle of discourse everywhere.

“It is not possible for government to say it would abdicate its responsibility in this area despite the humongous requisites for maintaining them which call for understanding between government and other stakeholders so as to bring about leeways out of the present situation, I promise you, no amount of bickering will give us solution to the problem at hand unless the labour agrees to truce terms and a middle channel is forged so our children can go back to school.”he said

On the proposed public-private-partnership to develop some public secondary schools in the State, Alhaji Alaran said the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi had at various fora put the record straight that the administration had no intention of selling public schools under any guise but to call for the private bodies and individuals to intervene.

Using a community school in his domain, Iseyin District Grammar School, Iseyin as example of how such intervention had worked, Hon. Alaran said the school which has about twenty-three blocks of classrooms, a huge hall, air-conditioned computer centre among others enjoyed a total structural revamping as a result of the intervention of the school’s alumni and the State government.

He said the school enjoyed this opportunity because the old students were called upon and they heeded the call which led to the total facelift of their alma matter, making it their pride and the envy of others.

“The example of I.D.G.S in Iseyin can be used to explain the point of view of government on the proposed policy, all the twenty-three structures there, except one which also has gotten somebody to help in its renovation have received quality facelift and some alumni have even come to build and equip the ICT center with full air-condition system, we have to take a cursory look at this and see ways to replicate same in other schools.

The Chairman, Iseyin Development Union (I.D.U), Iseyin Chapter, Pa Gbadebo Ogundiran reiterated the stand of the council Chairman, advising the government to as a matter urgency, find a solution to the industrial crisis in the State so as not to jeopardise the future of children in public schools who, according to him are the future of Nigeria.

Pa Ogundiran advised that government should work more on sensitizing the public on the proposed intervention as the present impasse was caused by infiltration of the oublic space with rumor which has caused disaffection in the State and allowed politics to enter into an important aspect of public development as education.

The Vice-President,  Federation of Iseyin Local Government Students (FILGS), Comrade……. appealed to the labour movement to dialogue with government on the education policy and allow their members go back to work, adding that the students in public secondary schools have missed many activities like examinations which might be difficult to regain.

He said since the Governor has said at a radio interview program that he monitored that his administration was not selling public schools but working on the policy to facilitate the growth of education and in consequence help the students achieve qualitative education, the people should see reason with him and allow peace to reign.

Party registration: Inec gets 32 fresh applications, says Chairman

Thirty-two associations have applied for registration  as political parties, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said yesterday.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof Yakubu Mahmood, made the disclosure at the second quarterly consultative meeting with, chairmen and secretaries of registered political parties.

The  meeting was a forum for the electoral umpire to brief party leaders on developments in the management of the democratic system.

Yakubu told representatives of the  political parties that the number of applications was rising.

He, however, hinted that the Commission had started processing the   applications; stressing: “the Commission remains committed to the opening of the democratic space in line with the law and our guidelines”.

On alleged involvement of INEC officials in the subversion of last year’s general elections through cash inducement, Prof. Yakubu  said: “INEC will also take further administrative action against staff found culpable in this dastardly conduct. We will not hesitate to interdict officials where prima facie cases have been established against them by EFCC and immediately terminate the appointments of those indicted”.

With regards to the prosecution of election offenders, the INEC chief disclosed that not minding the constraints has shown by the recently held bye-election in Minjibir Constituency in Kano State, “INEC legal team and the police have successfully secured the conviction of 42 suspects.

The figure, he argued was the highest number of convictions in a single case ever achieved by the Commission.

Speaking on the outstanding re-run elections, the INEC chairexplained that out of 80 court ordered re-run elections, the Commission has successfully conducted 49 and has 31 pending as well as one bye election.

He said: “Except for Anambra and Plateau where re-run elections which are sub-judice, we have started the processes of consultation leading to the completion of the outstanding elections”.

Yakubu also charged the political parties in the country to intensify voter education and mobilisation as he decried the low turnout of voters in elections conducted by the Commission in the aftermath of the last general elections.

He said: “We urge political parties to intensify your voter mobilisation effort in order to galvanise the electorate to the polling units. The Commission will continue to intensify efforts towards voter education.

“As we all know, political parties offer the only platform for contest to public office under our Constitution. Women, youths and people with disabilities are noticeable more by their under-representation in elective offices.”

On deployment of ICT in the electoral process,  Yakubu assured that all avenues were being explored to address the challenges arising from the functionality of the Smart Card Readers.

He further said that the Commission had designed a portal from which all registered voters could confirm and verify their registration online ahead of elections, adding that voters would also be able to transfer their registration from one point to another online.

Oronsaye and his counsel, Mr Kanu Agabi, were already in court when the registrar announced that the court would not sit and that all the cases had been adjourned.

While cases for ruling and judgement were fixed for Friday, other counsel were asked to pick suitable dates.

  • Purchase of cars by Senate is an act of Impunity – TMG

Purchase of cars by Senate is an act of Impunity – TMG

The Transition Monitoring Group, TMG Wednesday described the recent purchase of cars by the National Assembly as an act of impunity.

The group in a statement issued by its Chairman, Ibrahim Zikirrulahi said it is appalled at yet another demonstration of insensitivity by the Senate.

“Even after the Nigerian people warned that the decision to embark on such hedonistic acquisition in these lean times, would not be tolerated, the Senate has again dared the resolve of the people.

“The gluttonous manner in which less than 500 individuals are cornering the resources of a country where poverty and many other forms of privations are the order of the day, calls for concerted efforts among citizen groups.”

The group said it is incensed that at a time Nigerians in many states are grappling with the difficulties of living life without salaries, and the dire economic conditions biting so hard, it is provocative for Senators to be living in criminal opulence.

“Ironically, this is the same Senate led by a character currently standing trial over weighty allegations of false and anticipatory declaration of assets.

“It is the same institution that has been hijacked by shady figures, including their leader who has also been mentioned as one of those hiding suspicious assets in offshore tax haven, as revealed in the leaked Panama Papers.

“In defiance to extant procurement laws and the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the Senators have gone ahead to acquire the cars at prices that are twice the actual market value.

“It is barefaced stealing from the Nigerian people for the Senate to have paid N35.1 million for each of the Toyota Landcruiser purchased, while independent checks confirmed that the Toyota Land Cruiser SUV V6 2016 model is sold at N17 million.

“TMG calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to take all necessary measures to stop the corrupt and insensitive purchase and distribution of these vehicles by the Senators.

“Provocative steps like this insensitive purchase and distribution of exotic cars in the face of the current economic struggles remind us of the urgent need to vanquish all forms of corruption and greed from the system.

“This is why the vendors involved in these shady supplies should be investigated because they are also aiding and abetting the corrupt and wasteful spending by the legislators,” the group said.

TMG again calls on the Nigerian people to brace up for the coming struggle to confront legislative greed, impunity and corruption.

  • LG chairmen to enjoy four years tenure

LG chairmen to enjoy four years tenure

Lagos State House of Assembly is set to amend the local government administration law to make the tenure of the office of council chairmen four-years instead of three as it is currently.

The proposed amendment is sponsored by the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa and the sections to be affected by the amendment include sections 27 (1), 24 (a) and an inclusion of 12 (1).

In the motion which was moved on the floor of the House during plenary yesterday, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government Administration, Hon.Kazeem Alimi explained that the tenures of council chairmen and councilors would be adjusted to be in line with other representatives at the state level.

According to him, the proposed amendment would also take charge of the power of the state Assembly to enforce removal or suspension of any erring council chairman upon a petition from the concerned councillors.

Alimi also disclosed that the law would make categorical statements that any chairman who had served for two terms would not be eligible to contest any election as the head of local administration.

In his contribution, the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade maintained that the Nigeria constitution gives state Assembly the power to create local government, adding that for such creation to be effective the House should also have the power to sanction any chairman if found wanting.

While stressing the need for the amendment, Hon. Bisi Yusuff (Alimosho 1) commended the courage of the Speaker for coming up with the new Bill, saying “previous efforts aimed at amending the law had proved abortive.”

Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuoso (Mushin 2) stated that after the creation of councils, it is crucial for us to monitor the activities of the council bosses, saying “failure to carry out proper investigation and pass resolution that must be obeyed, will be counter-productive.”

However, the Deputy Majority Leader, Wahab Jimoh cautioned his colleagues over proposed section that empowers the House to remove or suspend defaulting council chairmen.

Jimoh argued that the House should not make councillors handicapped, saying the legislative arm at the third tier of government is also paramount.

While supporting Jimoh’s position, another member, Hon. Ibrahim Layode (Badagry 1) said “section 24 (a) needs better explanation so that we don’t harmstrung the legislature at the local level.”

The Speaker however explained that there was need to allow the resolution of the House to be enforceable. He explained further that there was no provision that takes over the power of the councillors in the proposed amendments.

Obasa recalled that “we had passed resolutions on two or three council chairmen for them to be removed in the past but the Governor did not comply. With this new amendment, we as a House, can go ahead with the removal.”
