    Betis chairman backs Igiebor

Real Betis FC of Spain’s President, Miguel Guillen has declared his ‘total confidence’ in Nosa Igiebor, the team and its Coach, Pepe Mel Los Beticos, are under scrutiny for an indifferent start to the season, which was compounded on Sunday evening with defeat at home to 10-man Elche.

“The analysis of the defeat to Elche is clear to everyone, Guillen said at a Press conference on Monday.

“We have not begun the season as we had intended. We have had a serious drawback. There are no excuses. Not with injuries nor on the field.

“We have to work to offer the fans what they expect from the team. We continue to maintain total confidence in this team, the coaching staff and the Coach”

“We still have to work to show that we have created a team that we will continue to believe in firmly, that is prepared for the three competitions and ready to have a very decent season.

“We have not begun well, but we are used to getting out of these situations with effort and unity and the club”

“That is what we intend to do, we have the capacity for that. The fatigue and wear so far is not an excuse, we are ready to sign in the January transfer window if it is necessary”

Betis will face Vitoria Guimaraes in the Europa Cup on Thursday, before travelling to Madrid to face Atletico.

  • Abia taskforce not terrorist— chairman

The chairman, Abia State Taskforce on Environment and Allied Matters, Capt. Awa Udonsi Agwu(rtd), has denied allegation that his team was unleashing terror on private motor park owners in Aba, the commercial hub of the state.

Private park owners during a peaceful protest in the commercial city of the state had alleged that their businesses suffered great losses due to what they described as constant harassment by the taskforce team in the last one year.

However, Capt. Agwu at press briefing denied the allegation, stressing that the taskforce in the last one year has exhibited high sense of civility in carrying out its assignments and has never had any cause to embarrass or being embarrassed by any individual in the cities of Umuahia and Aba respectively.

According to him, “when we moved into the mandate of removing illegal and unauthorised motor parks, asking them to go back to government approved parks, we knew it might not be an easy task because of the level of money available to those that run illegal parks. We are quite aware, but government has the total resolve to return Aba to its original master plan. And the master plan of Aba included in any form the positions these parks found themselves up-to-date.”

On the allegation that the taskforce failed to consult private park owners before embarking on the closure of illegal motor parks, the taskforce chairman said, “We are in a democracy and we run the government of Abia State under Dr. T.A Orji who believes much in dialogue.”

Chief Ifeanyichukwu Anaele, the owner of Bicoz Mass Transit, while reacting to the allegation that his company and another transporter, Galloping Motors, sponsored the protest to incite the public and sabotage the efforts of the state government to promote sanity in the transport business in Aba and other parts of the state, described it as false.

Anaele said that transporters in Aba has been solidly behind the actions of the state government in restoring sanity in the city and wondered why transport owners would want to incite the public or sabotage the state government as was alleged by the taskforce chairman.

  • Suswam denies plot to remove NSGF chairman

Suswam denies plot to remove NSGF chairman

Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State yesterday dismissed as false a media report that there was a plan to remove Niger State governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, as Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF).

The report had suggested that Suswam was responsible for the absence of many governors from last Thursday’s meeting of the forum in Kaduna preparatory to the dissolution of the NSGF executive committee at the next meeting.

He said: “the NSGF has its established rules and procedures for conducting its affairs, including the choice and removal of its leadership” and that “It does not even make sense for anybody to plot to remove any leader whose tenure has expired or is expiring.”

The Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Dr. Cletus Akwaya, in a statement said: “Over the years, Governor Suswam has remained not only a loyal, committed and dedicated member of the Northern States Governors Forum, but has also been serving as its vice-Chairman. There is, therefore, no basis for Suswam to plot or gang up with anybody to destabilise an organisation to which he has committed himself and the state government for so long.”

  • Ondo CNPP: Faction tells chairman to handover

The leadership crisis rocking the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Ondo State deepened yesterday as the caretaker committee set up by a faction of the group told the embattled Chairman, Chief Ayo Isijola, to vacate his office.

Isijola, who was reportedly sacked by the faction led by the former General Secretary of the Conference, Prince Femi Ajibola, said he remains the state CNPP chairman.

The faction announced Isijola’s “impeachment” last month and set up a five-man committee to oversee the CNPP’s affairs for six months, within which an election would be held.

In a letter to Isijola yesterday, signed by the Secretary of the Caretaker

Committee, Mr. Olusola Adeniyi, the committee directed Isijola to handover the conference’s property to it.

The letter reads: “I was directed by the Ondo State CNPP General Assembly at its meeting on May 26 to refer to the CNPP’s resolution of May 2, where a change of leadership was effected and a Caretaker Committee, headed by Mrs. Yemisi Aladesaiye, replaced your good self in office.

“You ceased to function as Ondo CNPP Chairman from May 3 and the decision has been communicated to you variously.”

The committee warned Isijola to obey the directive, adding that it had sent copies of the letter to security agencies and the CNPP’s Southwest Zonal Office.

Isijola said the faction was “engaging in an impossible venture”.

He said he had been going to the CNPP Office everyday and had not seen anyone holding a meeting there.

Isijola said Ajibola and two former executive were suspended by the CNPP for alleged anti-party activities.

He said Ajibola was suspended indefinitely and replaced with Mr. Lawrence Kehinde.

  • Rivers ACN suspended officials allegedly suspend chairman

The crisis in the Rivers State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) deepened yesterday, when the five suspended officials allegedly suspended the Chairman, Esuku M. Esuku.

Esuku was accused of accepting to work with Governor Rotimi Amaechi allegedly for the purpose of registering members for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and to collect N1 billion monthly.

The suspended members are National Treasurer Kenneth Kobani; Publicity Secretary Jerry Needam; Ibieneye Lolo; Lali Green and Nancy Nwankwo.

Kobani described his purported suspension as a huge joke, declaring that it was not in line with the party constitution.

He said Esuku and his “co-travellers” were attempting to please their unnamed paymasters.

But Esuku said: “I have not been suspended. I am with all the members of my executive in Port Harcourt.

“Those who claimed to have suspended me are frustrated people, who do not believe in the growth of the ACN.

“Amonibia Akoko is a former secretary of the ACN in Rivers State. The party secretary is Ngoji Warmate.

“I have nothing to do with the Rivers State Government. The allegation that I collected N4 million from the party’s coffers is a lie.

“ACN is bigger than N4 million. Do not mind them. There was no time N8 million was paid to any party in Rivers. It is cheap blackmail.”

The five suspended officials said: “Esuku M. Esuku collected N4 million from the party’s coffers, which has not been accounted for till date.

“He also collected N8 million from the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), for the conduct of local government elections.

“We are demanding tha he returns the party’s property he carted away.

“For working for the Rivers government to register members for the APC, Esuku has demonstrated that he is a non-serious party man and someone who should not be trusted by the people.”

  • Ekiti ACN chairman, four others arraigned for alleged murder

The Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ekiti State, Mr. Jide Awe, and four others were yesterday arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court for alleged murder.

The others are Faboro John, Aniramu Basiru, Falayi Busuyi and Owonifari Sefiu.

They were accused of murdering Mr. Ayo Jeje on March 30 in Erijiyan-Ekiti.

Jeje was killed while preparing to defect from the ACN to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They were also accused of attempting to murder Mr. Gbenga Adewumi on the same day and at the same place.

The defence counsel, Mr. Adetunji Oso, urged the court to allow the accused to continue to enjoy the bail that was granted them by the police, pending the legal advice of the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Femi Falade, opposed the bail application.

Chief Magistrate Richard Adeboye ruled that the accused should continue to enjoy the bail and adjourned till May 25.

The police arrested two associates of the late Jeje, Segun Adewumi and Adigun Adesanmi, for taking Awe’s pictures in court. It was learnt that they were taken to the command’s headquarters.

  • Kidnappers demand $1m to free Lagos council chairman

Kidnappers demand $1m to free Lagos council chairman

All was gloomy yesterday at house 21, Ona Iwa Mimo Street in Ejigbo, a Lagos suburb.

Mrs. Fatimo Bamigbetan, the wife of the Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, sat in silence. Surrounding her were several women who had formed several mini groups and were engaged in hush conversations. The white shawl that covered her head gave her a dignified look despite the sadness in her eyes.

It was difficult to know what was on her mind. When she replied to a greeting, the words came out just a little above a whisper. Her husband was kidnapped Monday night.

The house was furnished with the greatest simplicity; many could not find seats and they contended themselves with standing, arms akimbo.

In the ante room, several women were in varying moods of distress. A woman, sparse of frame, cursed endlessly at some unseen enemies.

Mr. Dele Alake, a former Lagos State Commission for Information, came in. His eyes displayed surprise and shock. He had come to express his sympathy with Mrs. Bamigbetan.

It was like an action-packed Hollywood movie – guns booming, a vehicle ramming into a tree and confusion all over. When it was over, KehindeBamigbetan, had been abducted, his driver sustained injury and his wife distraught.

There were many questions that remained unanswered even as the family and the police tried to put the matter into perspective. What was the motive for the kidnap of a public official? Why did the abductors wait until he was 50 meters from his home before snatching him?

The last person to see Bamigbetan was his driver, AbiodunOlayiwola, who narrowly escaped with his life.

According to AdewunmiAdesanya, Bamigbetan Personal Assistant on Political Matters, the abducted chairman left the local government secretariat on Egbe-Isolo road around 8pm. “ We were together till 8pm when he left, saying he wanted to go out. That was the last time I saw him,” Adesanya said.

Bamigbetan was said to have visited Alake’s office but his would-be host had left. He then went to Bourdillon Road where he spent some minutes at the home of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, before making his way home.

Olayiwola recounted the abduction. He said: “We were inside the street already. When we got to the puddle of water; I suddenly saw a car blocking me. I was wondering why the driver was driving roughly when two people jumped down; one at the front and the other at the back. They stood in front of the vehicle.

“My boss was at the back; he was making a call. Before I could think, I heard rapid gunfire. ‘What! I screamed and immediately put the car in reverse to escape. The shooting continued and my boss bent down at the back. I was careful so as not to be hit by the bullet. In my effort to escape, I hit an electricity pole and the car stopped.

“ I got down and shouted to my boss to get down too. That was how I escaped, but by the time I got back, they had taken my boss and his laptop. Please, help me find my boss,” Olayiwola said.

The gunmen continued to fire at the fleeing Olayiwola. The sound was loud and scary. He was wounded in his left hand. “ Icant even remember how the wound came to be,” he said.

But there are other versions of the story. According to the Secretary to the Local Government Remi Gbadegeshin, the events that led to the abduction was well choreographed.

Gbadegeshin said the kidnappers had earlier abducted a man before Bamigbetan was taken on EniIwaMimo Street. After his abduction, the first man was released.

Bamigbetan was allowed to call his wife at 4: am yesterday. He also disclosed that the abductors demanded $1,000,000 (One million Dollars) as ransom.

Negotiations were ongoing yesterday, it was learnt.

ACN chieftains began to arrive at the Bamigbetan’s home early yesterday. Alake he was “shocked beyond words”.

He lamented the increasing level of insecurity in the country, which has led to the kidnap of a public official.

“ They must have put him under surveillance; maybe for a week,” Alake said and many in the house agreed with him. He assured the wife that her husband would be found. He then asked for prayers. The crowd prayed hard and long. The woman, who had engaged in cursing, prayed the hardest. The people prayed for mercy and favour for the abducted chairman .

Other dignitaries came in. Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs AdemorinKuye also decried the security situation in the country, but spoke with much assurance that the government was on top of the situation.

“This government will not condone any act that will put this nation into chaos. His Excellency has put measures in place to ensure his safe return,” Kuye said.

Mrs. Bamigbetan’s mobile phone rang incessantly. Most of the time she excused herself to receive the calls. Her son, not more than five years, walked into the living room. Most of the women fell over themselves to show him excess kindness. He asked for his mother and when he did not find her, he ran upstairs – playfully.

At the local government secretariat, the mood of the workers was pensive, with many discussing the incident in groups.

“Maybe this will teach him a lesson to always use his security details. Oga will be going around without his security, that’s him for you, we have complained but he will not listen,” said one of his aides.

On Bamigbetan’s street, some of the residents said they were shocked by the news of the abduction. They described Bamigbetan as a gentleman who has done a lot for the local government. “ He is a man of the people; you can even see from his house that it’s not different from many here,” one of the residents said.

Other sympathisers that visited the family include Akeem Munir, a Federal lawmaker representing Isolo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Musin Local Government Chairman Babatunde Adepitan, Egbe Idimu LCDA Chairman Waheed Adebayo and his Odi-Olowo counterpart, Yemi Ali.

The family was still trying to put together the sequence of events. It was agreed that the abductors waited for him close to his house. But the abduction of a man earlier that night has thrown an interesting permutation into the story. A council official confirmed the man is now in the custody of the police. It was unknown if he was part of the plan or Bamigbetan was just unlucky to have been at the wrong place at the wrong time.

  • Okwu: I ‘m APGA’s authentic chairman

The newly elected national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Maxi Okwu, has declared that he is the authentic chairman of the party.

He dismissed the re-instatement of Chief Victor Umeh as the national chairman by the Appeal Court, Enugu, as a hoax.

The chairman also said that Umeh’s hope of bouncing back as the chairman has been sealed.

Okwu said that the ruling has no legal implication capable of hindering the elected national officers from performing their roles as party leaders.

Okwu was recently elected as the APGA national chairman at a convention held in Awka, Anambra State capital.

However, few hours after the convention, the Court of Appeal ordered for a stay of execution of the judgment of an Enugu High Court, which sacked Umeh and the members of the party’s National Working Committee on February 8.

Okwu, who spoke with reporters at his country home, Achi, in Oji, explained that the court ruling had no effect on the newly elected executive.

He spoke shortly after he was conferred with the chieftaincy title of “Ogbaturu Enyi,” (one that conquered a giant) by the traditional ruler of Akwunobi Kingdom, Igwe Ginger Ibeneme.

He said before the ruling came, the High Court had ruled that the party could proceed with the convention.

Okwu added: “Anybody who knows how the court operates will tell you that you can’t stay a declarative judgment, such as that of the Enugu High Court.

“You also can’t stay a judgment that has already been executed. The judgment was executed as early as 8a.m on Monday and around 12 noon, some people started talking about othe rder for the stay of execution.

“So, that ruling is an exercise in futility. Even, a first year Law student knows that you don’t stay an order that has been executed. We already have a new born baby, which is the APGA executive and it can’t be aborted again”.

Okwu reiterated his commitment to the restructuring of the party, assuring that the next year’s governorship election would be won by the party.

He added: “Governor Peter Obi has done so much in Anambra State. He restored sanity to the state. So, I’m optimistic that Anambra people will vote for APGA again.”

Igwe Akwunobi had earlier urged the new APGA chairman to remain committed to the responsibility of his office.

He said: “You have been going around in the political arena, but in this year, your own time to shine politically has come”.

The monarch, who stressed that he was not a politician, but a father to all the politicians, irrespective of their political leanings, called for the equal treatment of the parties by the electoralcommission during the election.

But, in a statement, the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Anambra State chapter, has called on the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) to investigate the conduct of the convention, alleging that the process was controversial.

Its Secretary, Chief Willy Ezugwu, said the monitoring of the convention by INEC was confusing.

Ezugwu, who is also a chieftain of the APGA, said that CNPP believed that the convention was an eyesore.

He said: “We are calling on INEC Chairman Prof Attahiru Jega to investigate the fraudulent conduct of the convention and the INEC personnel that monitored the proceedings of the event between 1am to 7 a.m that Monday.

“How did INEC itself got entangled? I doubt if Jega was given adequate notice to be part of such a deal to monitor a convention at that unholy time or is INEC no longer a public institution?”.

Ezugwu also wondered why Gov Obi should applaud the convention and allow his cohorts to discredit the Court of Appeal ,where three judges gave a ruling for a of execution and ordered the reinstatement of the national chairman and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

He added: “I do not see any reason why Governor Obi should support the convention by applauding it and allow the Commissioner for Information and culture, Mr Joemartins Uzodike, to disregard the Appeal court judgment by describing it as judgment in futility”

The party chieftain also called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the 24 impostors claiming to be state party chairmen of APGA. He said that they had erred by signing the notice of the congresses and convention.

He cited a similar case, which is pending in the court where Mr. Sadiq Massala claimed he had the mandate of 20 NWC members to remove Chief Victor Umeh from office, but INEC later discovered that 11 signatories were impostors.

Ezugwu advised Governor Obi to engage in activities that can assist in building APGA, instead of creating tension in the party.

He added: “Gov Obi should refrain from destroying APGA and disobeying court judgment because he was a beneficiary of the court judgment and rule of law.”
