Minister warns council chairmen against corruption

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed has vowed that he will ensure that the area council chairmen in Abuja accounts for any misappropriation while in office.

Mohammed stated this during the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected chairmen of the FCT area councils at the Banquet Hall of the FCT Minister’s official residence.

He also charged them to put the security of lives and property on the front burner of their administrations as the era of politicking is over.

Senator Mohammed emphasised that security remains a major concern and all efforts must be put into ensuring security of lives and property within their domains.

His words: “Security remains a major concern and as you take office, you must hit the ground running to ensure security of lives and property within your domains.

“This administration has set up machinery for effective surveillance of the FCT and you will be expected to immediately commence effective security monitoring of your area councils as well as collaborate with the FCT law enforcement agents to achieve a round-the-clock watch over your domains.

“I will ensure that you account for any misappropriation in your area council.”

The minister assured that the FCT Administration, as usual, would continue to ensure that all the area councils receive all funds due to them from the statutory allocation.

Mohammed, therefore, called on the new chairmen to reciprocate the FCT gesture by avoiding waste, ensuring accountability in the management of public resources and complying fully with the Procurement Act.

He reiterated that his administration will not shirk its responsibility for effective supervision of their operations and warned that ‘any chairman found wanting would be made to account fully for his commission or omission.’

The FCT Minister of State, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide hoped that the new chairmen would complement the efforts of the FCT Administration to fast-track development at the grassroots.

Oloye Akinjide advised that the “welfare of the people remains the greatest law and the greatest manifesto above political party, section or creed.”

She reiterated that election is over and the forest fires are over; adding that what remains is the challenge of development, which neither turns in winner nor loser, neither victor nor vanquished.

“We will remain committed to building a plural and inclusive society in the FCT in particular and Nigeria in general,” the Minister of State stressed.

Those sworn-in included Yahaya Garba Gawu-Abaji Area Council; Micah Y. Jiba-Abuja Municipal Area Council; Yohanna Peter Ushafa- Bwari Area Council; Abubakar Jibrin Giri-Gwagwalada Area Council; Ishaku Tete Shaban-Kuje Area Council and Daniel Ibrahim-Kwali Area Council.

The chairman of Bwari Area Council Mr. Yohanna Peter Ushafa who responded on behalf of other chairmen, appreciated the kind gesture of the FCT Ministers and promised to co-operate with the FCT Administration in achieving its policies and programmes.

The event was witnessed by important personalities in the Federal Capital Territory including the Senator representing the FCT, members of the House of Representatives representing the FCT, traditional rulers, leaders of political parties, youth leaders as well as community leaders.

  • Chairmen endorse Aregbesola for second term

The Forum of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Chairmen in Osun State has endorsed the state Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, for second term in office.

Also, the 332 ward chairmen of the ACN in the state passed a vote of confidence on his leadership.

In a communiqué issued after a special meeting of the forum in Osogbo to assess the progress of the Aregbesola’s administration in the last 30 months, the ward chairmen were particularly impressed by the Governor’s efforts at banishing poverty and hunger.

They also praised him for reducing unemployment, promoting healthy living, communal peace and progress and reforming the educational system.

The forum mentioned the O’YES, O’REAP, O’MEAL, O SCHOOLS programmes, the O’RENEWAL and the ubiquitous road construction and maintenance projects that are ongoing in the state as proofs that the Governor deserves a second term.

Aregbesola assured the ward chairmen that more spectacular progress will be evident in the coming months for those who are not blind to see or deaf to hear about the developments in the state.

He also disclosed that his administration has already committed over N1 billion to farmers in the state to boost agriculture in the state.

He stated that there is hardly any state in the federation with as low a level of value as Osun that can boast of the kind of achievements the state has recorded under his administration.

He encouraged the ward chairmen to stand firm and be prepared for harder work to make the state a model in the country.

EMERGENCY CONGRESS NFF stops Club Chairmen

THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered Chairmen/Managers of the Nigeria Professional Football League to withdraw their threat to the League Management Committee (LMC) to convene an emergency Congress.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, the NFF reiterated that the LMC was conceived, constituted and inaugurated by the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation – the nation’s football governing body – and therefore, legitimate.

“The LMC is duly recognized by the NFF and has been keeping to the letter and spirit of its terms of reference, since inauguration. The NFF views any threat to the LMC as an affront, not only to the Football Federation but to Nigeria football,” the statement read.

The statement added: “Any person(s) purporting to act on behalf of club(s) in the Nigeria Professional Football League to, therefore, undermine the authority and legitimacy of the LMC shall be visited with very severe sanctions.”

The NFF called on the Chairmen/Managers concerned to follow due and acceptable process by channelling their grievances to the Glass House, while observing that nothing should be prompted to disrupt the 2012/2013 League season that has been running excellently, with good organization and absence of violence and brigandage.

  • Yuguda’s lordship over council chairmen must end

Yuguda’s lordship over council chairmen must end

SIR: Barely two weeks after being sworn in as the caretaker committee chairman of Ganjuwa local government area of Bauchi State, the state governor, Mallam Isa Yuguda, sacked the chairman, Alhaji Abdul Hassan. The sack was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Bauch and signed by the permanent Secretary (Political Affairs), Government House, Bauchi, Hashimu Yakubu, on behalf of the Secretary to the state Government, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Dandija.

Though no reason was given for the sack of the chairman, the statement stated that the governor had appointed Sallau Baba Nassarawa as the new caretaker chairman of the local government, adding that the appointment took immediate effect.

This is not the first time Gov.Yuguda of Bauchi state will be suspending or sacking council chairmen without giving reasons for their removal from office. It is either no reason was given or they have been replaced with “immediate effect”.

It must be recalled that in 2010 the governor suspended the entire 20 elected council chairmen for eight months for an offence that indicted none of them.

We believe that by now, 13 years into the present political dispensation, our governors would have shed off the toga despotic tendencies of military administrators. In as much as we are not holding brief for any erring council administrator, Nigerians will no longer accept a situation where council chairmen are removed for no justifiable reasons.
