Why Nigerian companies remain ‘local champions’

Integrity in business is an issue that is key to companies becoming global brands. This virtue is believed to be in short supply in Nigeria’s business landscape. Experts believe there must be a paradigm shift if companies seek to become international brands, reports Assist. Editor Chikodi Okereocha

The  World Economic Forum (WEF) Global Competitiveness Report’ for 2014/2015 period ranked Nigeria 127 of 147 countries. The country did not fare well on the issue of diversion of public fund. The country only performed better than two countries: Venezuela and Argentina at 142nd position.

This was a major source of concern for the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ms. Arunma Oteh, when she spoke at he 2nd Christopher Kolade Lecture series on business integrity, and the theme of the lecture, ‘The Business Case for Business Integrity’.

Ms Oteh, a former employee of the African Development Bank (AfDB), examined the ethical foundations businesses in Nigeria need to put in place to ensure that the net effect on all their stakeholders, including shareholders, government, regulators, business partners, communities of interest and the general public, is a positive one.

In her presentation, the Amazon of SEC said Nigerian firms ranked low on ethical behaviours. For instance, Nigeria, she disclosed, ranked 132, of 144 countries, on a study on ethical behaviour of firms. While South Africa ranked 35, China ranked 55, leaving India and Brazil with 58 and 107.

Ms Oteh said “We must focus on bringing about a paradigm shift in our country when it comes to proper conduct. To become competitive and remain relevant in today’s global economy, our companies and public institutions must not only imbibe international best practices, but exceed them by setting the highest standards of conduct.”

She added that this has become imperative for many reasons. First, integrity, she pointed out, is an enabler of sustainable profitability. She observed that businesses that act with integrity are long term sustainable businesses while those that do not– for the purpose of short term gains–will eventually run out of business. “There are several studies showing companies that pay greater attention to integrity actually having better financial performance even in the short run than companies who do not. It should not be a choice to be ethical or be profitable. There is no question that businesses can and must be both,” she said, stressing that integrity is absolutely critical in business, and is as important as the quality of a company’s products and services in shaping its reputation.

Secondly, integrity is valued by all categories of stakeholders of a business.

She said: “Shareholders clearly want their business to be properly governed, investors place a premium on companies that set and maintain the highest standards, the best talents want to work for ethically sound companies that they can trust, the government, regulators and civil society also appreciate and reward integrity in business. Above all, the customer who businesses aim to please values how a company conducts itself. When a company successfully builds a reputation of integrity the benefits flow from across the spectrum of stakeholders. It can enjoy customer preference when other companies’ products or services are available at a similar cost and quality. It can charge a premium for its products and services; count on support from stakeholders in times of controversies; and reap value appreciation in the financial markets.”

The SEC boss said integrity helps build up ‘reputational capital’ which is an important component of an organisation’s value. According to her, there is a growing list of empirical evidence proving that integrity, embedded in sound governance, is a game-changer for businesses. “An analysis of 1,600 top companies in the MSCI World Index found that well-governed companies who pay attention to integrity tended to outperform poorly governed companies by an average of 30 basis points per month between 2008 and 2013. Another recent study published on the Harvard Corporate Governance blog found that high levels of integrity in an organisation are positively correlated with good outcomes, in terms of higher productivity, profitability, better industrial relations, and higher levels of attractiveness to prospective job applicants.”

Ms Oteh believes that given Nigeria’s robust economic growth, large population, and rich human and material resources, companies can carve a niche for themselves by building corporate reputations anchored on integrity and adherence to international best practices. She observed, for instance, that apart from Nigerian companies being regional leaders operating in Africa’s largest economy and the world’s most promising region, there has never been a better time to be in business within the Nigerian economy that has enjoyed over 13 years of robust economic growth above seven per cent per annum. Also, Nigeria, she said, is home to Africa’s largest population with over 170 million people.

She explained further: “We have very promising demographics where the median age is just 18 and over 70 per cent of the population is below the age of 30. Nigerians are exceptionally enterprising and more than half of the population now lives in the cities. We have a growing middle class currently estimated at 23 per cent of the population – 39 million people. With the rich natural and human endowments at our disposal, our country has been listed among the Next-11 and the MINT (Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria and Turkey) nations.

“Nigeria is projected to have a nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of $4 trillion by 2050, overtaking countries like Italy, Spain and Canada. Government reforms have engendered a macroeconomic stability, which is supportive of robust economic growth. Inflation has remained in single digits for over two years now, fiscal prudence is maintaining enviable debt-to-GDP and budget deficit levels, while buffers have been built to support a more stable exchange rate for the Naira.”

Despite these intimidating credentials that are capable of boosting Nigeria’s competitiveness provided businesses are built on sound integrity, Oteh expressed regrets that corruption and illicit financial flows remain two issues hindering the nation’s progress. “Corruption has been identified as the second most problematic factor to doing business in Nigeria ahead of factors including access to finance and terrorism. This year, the G-20 is focusing on combating illicit financial flows especially considering the fact that poor countries (Nigeria inclusive) are losing over $1 trillion every year to such illegal activities as money laundering, tax evasion, transfer pricing and embezzlement,” she said.

While lamenting that this is money desperately needed for the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), as it could prevent as much as 3.6 million deaths annually in the world’s poorest countries, she said Nigeria has lost more to illicit financial flows than any other African country between 2002 and 2011, even being listed in the top 10 globally. She disclosed that while Nigeria needs an estimated $50 billion investment to ensure stable electricity, the country lost over $140 billion to illicit financial flows within a period of nine years.

“A lot of it was lost through the illicit commercial activities of multinational companies. We now have a situation where these illicit outflows are not only depriving our country of desperately needed capital but are also being used to finance terrorism abroad and within our shores,” she disclosed, adding some pieces of intelligence from a security expert who recently trained her staff at SEC indicate that the dreaded Islamic sect Boko Haram received over $70 million between 2006 and 2011 through shady activities like money laundering, oil bunkering, kidnapping and dealing in drugs.

The intelligence also listed Boko Haram as the 7th richest terrorist organisation in the world. Oteh however, said efforts have been made to strengthen the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) regime in Nigeria. She added that to correct the reputational deficit, which Nigeria suffers as a result of lack of integrity in doing business, “We must make the cost of doing the wrong thing high.”

While participants at the forum expressed divergent views on how to advance business integrity, a common thread that ran through their presentations was that integrity in business is an idea whose time has come, and that it is non-negotiable. For instance, while the Company Secretary/Chief Compliance Officer of Oando Plc, Ms. Ayotola Jagun, during the panel discussions, said that Nigerian businesses that performed well should be rewarded and given incentives like preferred supplier status, Vice-Chancellor of Pan-Atlantic University, Prof Juan Elegido, said such approach only reinforces the love for incentives and not necessarily the love for integrity.

The Managing Director of Siemens Nigeria, Mr. Michael Lakota, said  organisations must be able to reinvent themselves. He said Siemens corporation has adopted  sound corporate governance practices. He said such practices have been recognised, as Siemens came first for the fourth year running on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.

But can firms in Nigeria imbibe the culture of integrity in business and leverage the country’s abundant human resources and natural endowment to play a dominant in the global economic arena? Ms Oteh says “yes.”

Her recommendation: “Regulation and adequate enforcement are proven ways to make people to do the right thing. In addition, we need an overhaul of the justice system because an assurance of speedy justice goes a long way in instilling discipline. I also strongly believe we need a vibrant civil society that is willing to ask the tough questions and hold the feet of politicians and institutions to the fire. We equally need strong social and religious institutions to bring in more clarity on the sometimes vague issue of integrity.”

She also suggested that there is need to focus on the family and go back to the homes from where a person’s character is molded.

“My personal story validates the importance of an early foundation. If today I am considered as a principled and disciplined person because of my stance for what is right and proper no matter the costs, I attribute this reputation to the early foundation laid by my parents,” she said, adding that focusing on molding the character of young people is certainly a powerful investment for the future that will help Nigeria tackle present day challenges of social cohesion, insecurity and inclusive growth. It will be a game changer capable of reversing the reputational deficit our country suffers from.”

Organised by Convention on Business Integrity (CBi), a company limited by guarantee, the lecture was attended by industry leaders/operators, regulators, and the academia. Soji Apampa, Executive director of CBi, explained that it was named after Kolade because he exemplified business integrity as practiced throughout his distinguished career in the private and public sectors. He said the outcomes for this year will provide a springboard for the discourse for the third instalment next year.

Mamelodi Sundowns: Uzoenyi wants trophies in South Africa

Ejike Uzoenyi is hoping to kick-start his career outside his homeland at South Africa champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, after completing his first training session with the Pretoria-based side on Monday.

His first stint away from the Glo Premier League did not tick the right boxes due to the unfavorable weather conditions he met at Ligue 1 side, Rennes.

However, the winger’s performance with the Super Eagles at the 2014 African Nations Championship demonstrated that he is a player of the highest order, and that ignited a bidding war before the Brazilians won the race for his signature.

”I have started training with my new teammates. They welcomed me; they are all very nice guys. I am sure the club can retain the Premier League title. Anything is possible in football and the group can do it. My target for this season is to win everything with this great club, and I like it here,”  Uzoenyi told SL10.ng.

Before the Nigeria international committed his future to Mamelodi Sundowns for the next four years, he was also linked with FC Vaslui, Romania and an unnamed team in France.

  • UEFA Champions League: Ogbuke gets quarter-final target

Super Eagles and Schalke 04 forward Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke and his club team mates have been handed at least a quarter-final finish in the 2014/15 UEFA CL campaign and Germany Bundesliga top four finish.

Club director of sport Horst Heldt challenged the Nigerian star and his mates to ensure the team goes as far as reaching the quarter-finals of the competition this season, as well as ensuring they qualify for the competition again next season.

Heldt in a statement on Sport1.de believes only last season champions Bayern Munich are out of his side’s reach and as such has set his club’s sights very high for the 2014-15 campaign.

“Of course when you have qualified for the Champions League three times in a row, then you are not going to settle for finishing fifth or sixth.

“It’s going to be an interesting season and we want to get the most out of it. What that will be, I cannot say.

“We want to contend for the leading positions. We want to go further than the last 16 in the Champions League and we want to go further in the DFB-Pokal too,” Heldt stated.

Despite seeing league holders Bayern as the team to beat again this season, Heldt declared his side are not merely focusing on trying to get the better of Pep Guardiola’s side.

”We’re following our own goals. It’s a mistake always to compare yourselves with the others and orientate yourself around them. Many clubs are trying to send good teams into the season and it’s going to be exciting, even if Bayern are of course leading the way.

“They are the favourites, but we have a good team too which has improved, and we are ready for our tasks.

“We have kept our team intact and the younger player are now more mature. We’ve also got our long-term injured back,so we’ve not needed to spend money really,” Heldt added.

The Nigerian star and his German side finished in third place last season behind title favorites Bayern and local rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Lagos State ‘Top 20 Showdown’ Table Tennis Tourney: Azeez, Bose emerge champions

In its effort to continue the promotion of Table Tennis in Lagos State and to prepare the state’s athletes for the 19th National Sports Festival coming up in Calabar later this year, the Lagos State Table Tennis Association organised a two-day championship tagged “Top 20 Showdown” which saw Ogunlade Azeez and Odusanya Bose winning the male and female categories respectively.

The competition which took place at the Table Tennis Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, saw Azeez and Bose smiling home with cash prizes of Sixty and Forty Thousand Naira respectively.

Azeez, who scaled the different stages of the tournament, defeated Anthony Gbenga 4-3 in a thrilling encounter in the finals and expressed joy at winning the maiden edition. He also said he didn’t expect the victory but that he planned to train more in order to repeat his success.

Speaking with SportingLife, he said: “I am very happy winning this competition. I didn’t plan winning it at all, but I thank God. I played very fine and I intend to train more to be a better player.”

Odusanya Bose, who thrashed Fatimo Bello 3-1 in the women’s final, said confidence saw her through the female category, as she was determined to defeat Bello who had always outshined her at different competitions.

”I am happy I won the game. I had the confidence that I would win the competition and beat my opponent,” Bose told SportingLife.

The championship was sponsored by the chairman, Lagos State Table Tennis Association, Femi Sokoya, and he said the motive behind the tournament was to ensure that the state surpasses its record at the last sports festival hosted by Lagos State, and also produce future stars who can bring glory to the country.

“The tournament was like a screening process to see players who are in form, up and coming, to know the direction the association needs to take in preparation for the next National Sports Festival,” Sokoya said.

“We administrators can only encourage these players to grow, push them. I believe these players can take over from the likes of Segun Toriola and Haruna Quadri,” he added.

uefa CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Ambrose marches on with Celtic

Nigeria international defender, Efe Ambrose was in action for all 90 minutes for Scottish Premiership club, Celtic on Tuesday in the UEFA Champions League.

Ambrose was a rock in defence as Celtic cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win against Icelandic champions, Knattspyrnufelagid-Reykjavik in a second leg, second round qualifying game.

Celtic had won the first leg 1-0 in Reykjavik and thus completed a 5-0 aggregate success following the thumping victory at Murrayfield Stadium on Tuesday.

The reward for Ambrose and his Celtic teammates for the crushing win over the Icelandic side is a third qualifying round tie against either St. Patricks (Republic of Ireland) or Polish champions, Legia Warsaw.

Both sides go into their second leg, second qualifying round game on level pegging after a 1-1 draw in Poland last week.

  • Eaglets tip Germany as champions

    Eaglets tip Germany as champions

Following their 7-1 defeat of Brazil in the semi-final, the Golden Eaglets’ players have overwhelmingly tipped Germany ahead ofArgentina to win the Brazil 2014 World Cup on Sunday.

The Final to be played at the imposing Maracana Stadium is a repeat of the gruelling 1990 encounter between the two countries which was decided by an 85th minute penalty goal by Germany’s Andreas Brehme, and the 1986 Final won 3-2 by Argentina.

In a poll conducted amongst the 35 Eaglets in camp, 23 players (66 percent) felt the German Machines would extend their World Cup titles to four while the remaining 12 (34 percent) backed Lionel Messi’s Argentina to win a third title since their triumph in 1978 and 1986.

Incidentally, Germany thrashed Argentina 4-0 when both teams clashed in a quarterfinal match at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa fuelling great expectations on Sunday.

“My money is on Argentina to win because they have shown that they are a complete  team since the  competition started,” said Eaglets defender Jack Ipalibo. “Apart from that, they defend  in numbers which makes it difficult for others to score against them but it won’t be easy against Germany; yet Argentina will win.”

Dayo Femi is leading Germany’s cheer group in saying the three-time world champions have the best attacking force that would be too hot for the Albiceleste come Sunday.

“We have seen that the most ruthless team at this World Cup is Germany and that is the reason most of us believe they would win on Sunday,” he stated. “I’m even tipping Mesut Ozil to nail the Argentines.”

But it would be a win-win situation for Golden Eaglets’ Head coach, Emmanuel Amuneke (MON) since his two favourite teams would clash in Sunday’s finale.

“All my life, I have supported Argentina and Germany,” said the 1994 African Footballer of the Year. “So, I have nothing to lose on Sunday because the two teams have the capacity to win. As such, we are going to see a great final match.”

I’m sure we ‘ll still be champions — Neymar

Neymar has told Brazilfans that the national team will still win the World Cup despite his injury-enforced absence.

The iconic star was stretchered off in the final moments of the Selecao’s 2-1 quarter-final win over Colombia on Friday night and has been diagnosed with a broken vertebrae, which will keep him out for four to six weeks.

But while the entire country comes to terms with his absence from the semi-final against Germany on Tuesday, the player has sent a teary-eyed video message in which he insists Brazil can still go on to win the World Cup.

“Brazilian people, players, staff, fans. This is a hard moment, and I don’t have the words to define what’s going through my head and my heart,” Neymar told the fans via CBF TV.

“I just want to be back as fast as possible, when everyone least expects. I want to say thank you for the support, the love that everyone has shown for me, for all the messages.

He continued: “I’d like to tell you all that my dream is not over. It was interrupted, but it goes on. My dream is to be champion.

“My dream was also to play in a World Cup final. But it won’t happen this time. I’m sure that they [Brazil] will win and be champions. And I’ll be there, with them.

“And us, Brazilians, will all be celebrating this.”

Luis Felipe Scolari’s men face Germany in Belo Horizonte on Tuesday for a place in the final, with kick-off at 22:00CET.

  • Predictor’s best and worst of the Glo league

Predictor’s best and worst of the Glo league

With the 2012/13 Glo Premier League, otherwise known as the Globacom Premier League season over, I take a look back at the good and bad moments that characterised the season. Check out the awards of the season here:

    Champions of the season

Kano Pillars rode on the back of their invincibility at home to win the title for the second successive season. Only Lobi Stars took points off them at home and they did not falter even when they were banished to play home games in Abuja and Lokoja after crowd disturbances.

    Photo-finish to the season

In a long while, I cannot remember a season in which the top four ended with one point separating each team. Kano Pillars ended as champions on 63 points, Enyimba followed on 62 while Bayelsa United and El-Kanemi Warriors finished in third and fourth positions respectively with 61 and 62 points accordingly.

Same goes for the relegated four of ABS, Kwara United, Wikki Tourists and 3SC. All four had a fighting chance of survival until the very last minutes on the final day of the season.

    Fastest Goal

Dolphins midfielder, Austin Ekpoma scored the fastest goal of the season. Before Enugu Rangers could settle down inside the Liberation Stadium, the former Gombe United man scored in 15 seconds of the game on August 25.

    Top Scorer

No matter what a lot of people have said about the manner with which Victor Namo of Nasarawa United emerged the leading scorer, it was a breakout season for the striker. He scored 19 goals including his double strike against champions Kano Pillars in Lafia on September 8.

    Man of the Season

A number of players readily come into the picture for my man of the season but I’ll go for Kano Pillars playmaker, Rabiu Ali, ahead of the duo of Oghenekaro Etebo of Warri Wolves and Enyimba captain, Chinedu Udoji. Ali was central to Kano Pillars’ run to reclaiming their league title.

    Best Goalkeeper

There were several goalkeepers who distinguished themselves in the immediate past season in my own book. Theophilus Afelokhai (Kano Pillars), Terkaa Melai (Lobi Stars), Olufemi Kayode (Akwa United), Ayo Segun (Wikki Tourists) and David Obiazor (El-Kanemi Warriors) were among those that impressed me. But Enyimba goalkeeper, Femi Thomas stood out as he complemented his back four’s solidity.

    Coach of the Season

It is not often you witness a coach guide his team to back-to-back titles in the Nigerian league. Mohammed Baba Ganaru of Kano Pillars is my coach of the season. Sharks gaffer, Gbenga Ogunbote, comes close in second and Zachary Baraje of El-Kanemi Warriors is third.

    The Miracle Worker

Sharks head coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, masterminded one of the greatest revival in the premier league era. Indeed the former Sunshine Stars coach, against all odds, pulled off one of the greatest escapes in the Nigerian top flight by rescuing the Blue Angels from relegation after they had been written off.

    The Great Escape

After finishing the first round of the season in bottom place, Sharks looked like a team heading for life in the lower division. The Blue Angels then clawed back their way from sitting in the bottom spot for 13 match days to finish in a respectable eighth position.

    Bizarre Fall

The relegation of Kwara United is most unusual to me. After emerging as the team with most won points on the road being 13, Samson Unuanel’s men went down to the National League after struggling to a 1-1 draw on the last day with Akwa United.

It even got worse when city rivals, ABS, also got relegated on the final day of the season though the Saraki Boys hardly got into second gear during the season. So there will be no Ilorin derby in the top flight next season.

    Six in the City

Relegated ABS remain the only team to score six goals in a single match. The Saraki Boys plundered six past hapless Nembe City in Ilorin on October 16. The game ended 6-1 with Kadiri Aminu and Abdulrahman Bashir scoring a brace of goals each while Thomas Zenke and Ibrahim Abdullahi scored one apiece before Frank Egharevba netted City’s consolation goal.

    Team of the season

Femi Thomas (Enyimba) – Bright Esieme (Enyimba), Chinedu Udoji (Enyimba), John Uche (Kwara United), Jonathan Zikiye (Nembe City) – Azubuike Okechukwu (Bayelsa United), Rasheed Olabiyi (Enyimba) – Rabiu Ali (Kano Pillars), Oghenekaro Etebo (Warri Wolves) – Victor Namo (Nasarawa United), Mfon Udoh (Akwa United). Coach: Mohammed Baba Ganaru (Kano Pillars)

    The Revolving Doors of Coaches

Three coaches, Ndubuisi Nduka (Heartland), Abimbola Samuel (Sunshine Stars) and Alphonsus Dike (Nasarawa United), readily come to mind as men in the dugout who got fired this season. In their places came in Ramson Madu, Fatai Amoo and Kadiri Ikhana respectively. Also, Lobi Stars vice chairman, Dominic Iorfa, who worked as head coach, decided to bring in Evans Ogenyi to take charge of the playing personnel while he focused on the day-to-day administrative schedule of the Makurdi club.

    Shock Deaths

In the course of the season, two players passed on. First, Warri Wolves midfielder, Solomon Oboh died in a motor accident in June and in October, 3SC striker, Moses Ogaga passed away after battling illness for several weeks.

    Landmark moves by the LMC

Some followers of the Globacom Premier League had their doubts and still do about the League Management Company (LMC). But the company achieved a handful of ground-breaking moves in the area of partnership including a $34 million TV broadcast rights deal to run from 2015 to 2019.

The LMC also instituted the financial merit award in the just-concluded season in which all 20 participating clubs shared N50 million (around $62, 500) according to their final standings.

  • ABBA YOLA SCREAMS: Pillars to blame if they are not champions again

ABBA YOLA SCREAMS: Pillars to blame if they are not champions again

Chairman of Kano Pillars Abba Yola has said they would have only themselves to blame if they fail to retain the Nigeria league title.

Kano Pillars have put the title out of the reach of six-time champions Enyimba after the Aba side lost 2-0 to Sunshine Stars with Pillars beating Dolphins 1-0 in Lokoja on Wednesday.

The Kano side now have Bayelsa United and El Kanemi Warriors, who are second and third on the league table to contend with on the final day of the season on Sunday.

All three teams would be playing away from home on the final day of the season with Pillars needing only a draw to win their third title.

Pillars, on 63 points, are away to Lobi Stars, 61-points Bayelsa will do battle at Gombe, while El Kanemi, who have 60 points, are away at Enugu Rangers

“We will have ourselves to blame if we failed to lift the title. We have worked very hard this season and the boys are determined to cap it with the title, so in sha Allah we will be able to post a favourable result that would see us win the league back-to-back,” Abba Yola told MTNFootball.com.

  • Enyimba set to be champions again

Enyimba set to be champions again

Enyimba are poised to clinch their seventh Nigeria league title with champions Pillars likely to miss out on a continental ticket.

It will be a remarkable turnaround for two-time African champions Enyimba, who have missed out on international football for the past two years.

The Aba club’s title aspirations received a major boost after the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) organising and disciplinary committee (O&D) awarded them three points, three goals for an abandoned Week 31 game against Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Enyimba now have the edge to win the 2012/2013 league as all the serious title contenders have two home and two away games to play.

Enyimba currently lead the table with 58 points and are now likely to end the season with 64 or 65 points, which will be enough to hand them their seventh league crown and so a league and cup double this season after they beat Warri Wolves to win the Federation Cup.

On Sunday, ‘The People’s Elephant’ will face relegation-threatened 3SC in Ibadan and with the form of the Aba giants they could further compound the woes of the hosts by getting a point from the game, before they go ahead and win their remaining two home games against ABS FC and Sharks.

It is assumed they will lose to Sunshine Stars in Akure.

This means they will end with 65 points, but if they lose the two away games and win their two home games, they will finish on 64 points.

Bayelsa United are currently second with 55 points and may get six points from the remaining four games, which are home ties with Warri Wolves and Kwara United which will give them 61 points at the end of the season and second spot as well as a ticket to the 2014 CAF Champions League.

El Kanemi Warriors will be delighted to earn a place in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup on their return to the Nigeria top flight.

Currently third on the league table, El Kanemi have been outstanding in front of their home fans and look set to clinch six more points from the remaining games.

They welcome Dolphins and Lobi Stars to slaughter house Maiduguri and going by their invincibility there, they will earn the maximum six points to total 60 points.

Their two away games are against Heartland and Rangers, with the poor form of Heartland recently having drew two last home games, El Kanemi could even get a point which will give them 61 points.

Defending champions Kano Pillars seem to have lost the battle to retain the league title as they are on 54 points.

They could also miss out on international football since 2009.

They have two home games against Kwara United and Dolphins, which will now be played in Lokoja following their banishment there till the end of the season.

Should they even win these games, they would finish with 60 points, their two away fixtures will be tough as Gombe United and Lobi Stars, their opponents need the points to ensure they stay afloat at the end of the season.
