    Change of baton at Lafarge

    Cement giant Lafarge Africa Plc celebrated its outgoing chairman, Chief Olusegun Osunkeye, and welcomed his successor, Mr Mobolaji Balogun, in Lagos last Friday. OLATUNDE ODEBIYI was there.

    Good deeds beget good reward. So it was last Friday when Chief Olusegun Oshunkeye, former Lafarge Africa Plc chairman was celebrated after bowing out.  It was a twin event as his successor Mr Mobolaji Balogun, son of eminent banker Otunba Subomi Balogun was ushered in.

    It was all at Shell Hall, MUSON Centre in Onikan, Lagos. Guests were the cream of society.

    The women were in high heel shoes and lovely hairstyles. They moved to the red rug at the entrance to take photographs and exchange pleasantries before entering the hall.

    Women in green ankara, sewn in Oleku style, ushered guests to their seats.

    The hall was tastefully decorated.

    Osunkeye was in white agbada with light blue cap; Balogun was in suit. They were the cynosure of all eyes. They sat on the front row with top members of staff of the company. The waiters, assisted by ushers, served guests snacks, foods and drinks at intervals.

    Frank Edoho, the Master of the Ceremony, ensured that guests had a nice time.

    Yinka Davies and her band led guests to recite the national anthem.

    Yibs Ensemble presented a play titled: “Grip Aim” written by the late Ola Rotimi.

    After the play, the firm’s Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Roux said the gathering was to celebrate Osunkeye who has remained committed to Lafarge Africa.

    Ogun State governor’s wife, Mrs Olufunsho Amosun, who delivered her husband’s goodwill message, said Osunkeye has been supportive to her, her foundation and the state.

    She congratulated Mr Balogun on his appointment, saying he is capable of stepping into Osunkeye’s shoes.

    A director Mr Adebayo Jimoh, read Osunkeye’s citation. People eulogised Osunkeye. Another director, Joe Hudson, read Balogun’s citation.

    Osunkeye’s first child, Mrs Kemi Adewole described him as God-fearing. “God is everything to him, he loves God, he is very passionate about God, he is Godly and he puts God in every single thing he does. He serves in church and that tells me he is a humble man. He is a rare gem, patient, diligent, compassionate, hard working and long suffering. He is a man, who brings out the best in everybody and especially his children and our spouses. He has time for everybody; he is an attentive father and attentive grandfather. He meets each of us at the point of our needs. He is generous. He is interested in what you are going through, at work and at home. He has a solution to anyone’s problem and he does not take anyone for granted. He is a leader by example. I want to say today that on behalf of my siblings, our spouses and everyone that has taken you as a father, we are proud of you, we are honoured to be your children and thank God that a day like this has come.”

    Ogun State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry Otunba Bimbo Ashiru described Osunkeye as a supportive father.

    A former Central Bank of Nigeria governor and former director of the company, Chief Joseph Sanusi proposed the toast. He described Osunkeye as a man who excels in everything he does. “I was on the board of Lafarge with Chief Osunkeye for about 10 years, he never came late or missed any meeting. He is always fully prepared for the meeting and he will always find an answer to every question raised. It is my pleasure tonight to propose the toast of Osunkeye, a great Nigerian, a good leader and a jolly good fellow,” he said.

    He asked the gathering to rise for the toast amid singing of the popular song, “For he is a jolly good fellow”. Guests clinked glasses filled with wine.

    Sanusi congratulated Balogun, wishing him a successful tenure.

    Responding, Osunkeye said he was overwhelmed by the show of love for him, adding that the gathering surprised him.

    He invited Balogun to the stage and introduced him as his successor. They hugged amid applause.

    Osunkeye described Balogun as a thoroughbred, corporate  multi-tasking, solutions bringing and result-oriented man, full of vitality in the board room, and also in the business world.

    He prayed that Balogun will take  the firm to greater heights. “May God bless, keep and make his face to shine upon you. May success, joy and satisfaction be yours.”

    Balogun, after thanking guests and apologising for his parents’ absence, said:  “I’m delighted today to have the opportunity to step into the shoes of a remarkable man and I am tremendously humbled by the opportunity that I have to follow the foot step of one of Nigeria’s greatest citizens and I am extremely blessed by the opportunity to have sat on the same board with Osunkeye for over a decade.”

    “To be asked to chair this company, short of my 50th birthday is a remarkable opportunity for a young man like me,” he said.

    He hoped that in the next five or seven years he would have taken the company higher than he found it.

    Osunkeye was appointed to the board on October 24, 2000 and became chairman on October 1, 2009. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, the Institute of Directors and the Nigerian Institute of Management.

    He is also president (and a fellow) of the Society for Corporate Governance Nigeria and the immediate past chairman of International Chamber of Commerce, Nigeria Chapter.

    He was Nestle Nigeria Plc and GlaxoSmithKline chairman for 14 years. He is a past president of the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA).

    The Rotary Club of Ogba has installed Rotarian Emmanuel Obinna Eze as the 32nd President and member of executive at the Rotary Centre, Bank PHB Hall, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos. AMIDU ARIJE reports.

    THE Rotary International Club District 9110 has a culture. It changes its leadership every June for a new set of leaders to take care of affairs for one year. The executive of  Ogba Rotary Club was recently elected.

    The event took place at the Rotary Centre, Bank PHB Hall, Ikeja, Lagos.

    All was set for the occasion. Guests waited patiently to witness the installation of the new president and executive members.

    The hall was beautifully adorned in blue and yellow satin. Different inscriptions of the programme sponsors were placed at strategic places leading to the hall and inside, this added glamour to the event.

    The ceremony was presided over by the Chief Executive Officer, Current Foam Industries and Chemicals Nigeria limited, Chief Godwin Umeugoji as chairman Vitafoam Plc, Dr Dele Makanjuola was guest speaker.

    It started on a prayerful note. The reading of the Rotary grace followed. The Rotary song which the former Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Otunba Bosun Oladele led enlivened the programme as all Rotarians present sang in unison with the team leader.

    Chief Umeugoji congratulated the club, enjoining members to support the incoming president.

    In his farewell speech, the out-gone president, Samson Omodara, thanked God and Rotarians for the success achieved in office. He said he would have not achieved much but for the support of the members.

    Omodara promised to keep the flag flying even while out of office. He urged members to support the incoming president Emmanuel Obinna Eze.

    Speaking on the activities of the previous year, he said: “The year began smoothly and ended on a remarkable note, we were able to do a lot of things to improve humanity.”

    Awards were presented to members of the club and non members for their support. Among the awardees were a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Gbolahan Yishawu; Chairman, Badagry West Local Government, Hon Bamgbose Joseph among others.

    The handing over was supervised by Rotarian Umeugoji.

    Omodara handed over the collaret to Eze amidst clicking of cameras.

    In his acceptance speech, Eze said he would work in accordance with  Rotary rules and principles. He promised to take the Ogba Rotary Club to another level.

    “We have a lot of projects to accomplish: the first is to provide the braid soft computer to the School of the Blind; build 14 toilets for the clinic at Ogba and renovate it. We are also going to continue our programme on awareness for sickle cell patients among other things,” he said.

    Guests had good time as choice foods and drinks were served.  They exchanged pleasantries and new acquaintances were made as the programme wind down.

    They later joined the celebrator and his wife, Helen on the dance floor.

    The Best Westown Hotel on Allen Avenue, Ikeja, Lagos was agog when the Rotary Club of Ikeja inducted Mr Olagoke Olayinka as the 47th President and Directors of the club. AMIDU ARIJE reports.

    The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.” These words of Dwight Eisenhower aptly captured the investiture of Mr Olagoke Olayinka as the 47th President and the induction of the 2013/2014 Board of Directors of Rotary Club of Ikeja.

    The event drew dignitaries from far and near.

    The Rotarians came with their family members for the once-in-a-year event.

    They looked resplendent in their attires.

    Olayinka, who was the cynosure of eyes, was dressed in black suit with bow tie to match.

    Pleasantrieswere exchanged as guests crept into the hall.

    The hall was beautifully decorated in various colours.

    The opening prayer was said and the club song was sang to kick-start the occasion. It was followed by the recitation of the National Anthem.

    The crème de la crème of the society were invited to the high table.

    Among them were Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru; Chairman, Guinness Nigeria Plc, Mr Babatunde Savage and the Paramount Ruler of Yewa Land, Ogun State, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle.

    Savage, who was the guest speaker presented a paper on Integrity in service.

    The paper focused on restating the core values of the Rotary Club and to challenge the leadership pattern in Nigeria to refocus its attention on values and ethics that guides leadership ideas.

    He reminded guests and well-wishers of the tripod that holds Rotary Club. Rotary Club, he said, represents the greatest potential for transforming Nigeria from poor to great.

    “I say this because Rotary, among other clubs in the world, represents great principles and great values,” he said.

    Savage added: “You have something that is very unique, which is the four-way test, which members are expected to apply in all situations. You are expected, no matter the type of situations you find yourself, to ask: is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and friendship? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? What a wonderful set of questions to ask for a decent person who wants to do a decent work. You have one of the greatest policy thrust of any civil organisation I have ever heard of”.

    He urged Rotary members to remain on track and extend their noble service and values of integrity and leadership in service into the fabric of society.

    This, he said, would begin to have positive impact and inspiration that brings excitement that invariably creates the power to change our society for good.

    The investiture was conducted after the lecture.

    Amid flashing of camera lights, the new president, Olayinka took the ‘staff of office’ from his predecessor, Niyi Osidele. It was followed with cheers.

    Olayinka promised to consolidate on the works on his predecessor and to better the lives of the less-privileged.He also promised to visit the schools in the area.

    He applauded the successes of his predecessor and further restate his readiness to work above board with every member of the club to deliver service that will benefit humanity and promote the ideal society that support equality and moral values.Some of the projects, he highlighted include education, health, environmental development as well as developing human capital to support economic growth.

    Guests were treated to choice food and drinks.

    They took to the dance floor till the light faded.

  • Change of baton at Lion’s Club

    Egbeda Host Lions Club has installed Lion Abayomi Oriretan as its fifth president. The event was held at the De Hall of Lagos State Printing Corporation (LSPCC) on Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos. AMIDU ARIJE was there.

    Live years ago, some people gathered for fellowship at one of the secondary schools in Egbeda, a Lagos suburb. Little did they know that their gathering would lead to

    birth of Egbeda Host Lions Club?

    It was tough getting people to buy into their idea of humanitarian service which the club stands for.

    The club has been growing steadily. Members gathered at the De Hall of LSPCC for the investiture of Lion Abayomi Oriretan.

    The hall was filled. It was decorated in blue and white colours.

    They looked resplendent in their blue Ankara attire.

    Lion Oriretan stood tall among his colleagues; he wore a blue agbada with an abeti aja cap to match. He beamed with smiles and acknowledged cheers from guests.

    Guests were welcomed to the occasion by some well-dressed women.

    Otunba Taiwo Oloyede was the compere.

    The arrival of the Governor of Lion Clubs in Nigeria District 404B, Lion Stella Agbogun, kicked started the event. Her arrival was greeted with cheers and praises.

    The call to order, done by a former President of the club, Lion Azeez Olasode, marked the start of the event. The club’s code of ethics was read by Lion Layi Tailor.

    Lion Gbadebo Salawu thanked the guests.

    Lion Agbogun subsequently gave her speech, thanking the club members for their efforts in the service of humanity. She urged them not to relent

    Lion Agbogun tasked the incoming president to live up to expectations.

    She appealed to the members to support the president to achieve the club’s objectives.

    “Your election to the position of president of the club shows the type of trust your members have in you and you should not allow that trust to fail,” she said.

    Lion Agbogun urged members to work tirelessly to alleviate the sufferings of the Nigerian child.

    “Whatever you can do to alleviate the sufferings of the Nigerian child should be done,” she urged.

    Before decorating Lion Oriretan, Lion Agbogun obtained his wife’s permission to install him as president.

    After his installation, Lion Oriretan listed his programmes for the year and promised to carry all along.

    “Our projects will include provision of boreholes in schools and streets in our community; provision of first aids boxes to schools; free exercise books to schools; visitation to and presentation of relief materials to motherless babies homes among others,” he said.

    To realise the target of his club, Lion Oriretan appealed to all to donate generously to the course.

    The club’s song was sung after the installation.

    Chairman on the occasion, former President of the Rotary Club of Ikoyi, Rot Nike Maiyaki, urged the Lions to rally round their president for him to succeed.

    She appealed to the president to work for the good of his members and reader service of humanity.

    Guests were treated to delicious meals.
