    Five schoolboys charged with sexual assault

    Five pupils of Ireti Grammar School (IGS) in Falomo, Ikoyi, Lagos, were yesterday arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for alleged sexual assault.

    They were accused of forcing themselves on a female pupil on May 4 on Norman Williams Street, Ikoyi and willfully damaging her skirt.

    The boys, with ages between 16 and 17, pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya granted them N500,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum. The sureties, he said, must be civil servants.

    But a representative of the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) held a watching brief for the complainants during the pupils’ arraignment by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The pupils are standing trial on a four-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful assembly and gross indecency.

    The charge marked E/25/2017 alleged that the offences contravened Section 35, 44(1) &(4), 134 and 412 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate directed that the case file be sent to the DPP’s office for advice and adjourned till June 14.

    On Wednesday, Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni said they would be prosecuted.

    The police chief said: “Four of them will be taken to juvenile or family court, but one of them, who does not fall into the category of children, will be arraigned in open court.”

    A Facebook user, Michale Matthew, posted a story on her page that she saw two female pupils being harassed and molested by their fellow male pupils, who had just completed their senior secondary school examinations.

    Matthew described how the boys chased the girls in Obalende, tearing up the skirt of one of the victims with a pair of scissors.

    According to her, two of the boys attempted to force themselves on the girls to the cheers of other boys.

  • Man charged with theft of SUV

    A man was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing vehicle parts worth N300,000.

    John Boniface was arraigned before Magistrate Bola Osunsanmi on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Simon Imhonwa told the court that the defendant conspired with another person, now at large,  to steal and vandalise a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to Andy Anibor.

    The defendant was alleged to have stolen the SUV’s brain box, musical set, air conditioner control and head lights.

    The incident, Imhonwa said, occurred around 5am on March 26 at 2 Bolaji Adebanji Crescent, Opebi Ikeja, Lagos.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Osunsanmi granted him N100,000bail with two sureties in the like sum. The sureties should be employed and must show evidence of tax payment.

    The matter was  adjourned till June 6.

    Project manager charged with ‘N199m theft’

    A Project manager, Olayinka Olafimihan, has been arraigned before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N199 million from a property company.

    The suspect was accused of forging documents to steal cash, building materials and equipment valued at N199,074,880.15 belonging to Twins Wild Passion.

    Olafimihan allegedly committed the offence between September 2014 and July 2016 while working as Project Manager of Twin Wild Passion at 84, Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island.

    Police prosecutor Goodluck Admoni said the offence of forgery contravenes Section 361 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    Olafimihan is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony, forgery and stealing.

    Count three reads: “That you, Olayinka Olafimihan ‘M’ and others now at large on the same date and place in the Lagos Magisterial District did steal cash, building materials and equipment valued at N199,074,880.15, property of Twins Wild Passion and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 285(8) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2011.”

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Y. O. Aje-Afunwa granted him N10million bail with two sureties each.

    One of the sureties must be a land owner in Lagos; the other must be a community leader.

    The sureties must also present evidence of tax payment, the magistrate ruled.

    Mrs Aje-Afunwa adjourned till April 5.

  • Maid, 18, charged with attempt to kidnap boss

    An 18-year-old housekeeper, Evelyn Angese, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to kidnap her boss for N5 million ransom.
    Angese, whose address was not given, was arraigned by the Zone 2 Police Command, Lagos before Magistrate O. M. Ajayi.
    She is standing trial on a five-count charge of conspiracy, attempted kidnap, threat to life and demanding for ransom money.
    Prosecuting Sergeant Tubi Olajide told the court that the defendant with others at large, committed the offence last August 22, at 32a, Balogun Street, Lagos Island.
    Olajide said they threatened to kill one Mrs Uche Onwuka and her children “without any reasonable cause,” and also attempted to kidnap her and her family.
    “Angese and her accomplices also demanded with menace, the ransom of N5million to be paid into her Access Bank account no. 0694219782 and another Access Bank account no. 0036554252, belonging to one Samuel Ayodele.
    “They sent text messages to Onwuka’s phone, threatening to kill her and her chidren,” the prosecutor said.
    According to him, the offence contravened Sections 56, 230, 299, 404 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
    The defendant pleaded not guilty.
    Magistrate Ajayi granted her N500,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum and adjourned the case till March 1.

  • Three charged with Okada rider’s death

    Three men, who allegedly shot and killed a 27-year-old commercial motorcyclist, were yesterday remanded in prison by a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The accused, Hammed Tanimowo, 35; Wahab Abiodun, 36 and Okesola Oladele, 40 are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    Magistrate E.A. Johnson, who did not take the plea of the accused, ordered their remand pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    She said their files should be duplicated and forwarded to DPP for advice and adjourned the matter to August 8.

    Prosecutor Corporal Godwin Oriabure told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 26 at Isiamu area of Ikorodu in Lagos State.

    He said the deceased had picked-up a passenger, who was heading to Adamo in Ikorodu when they were stopped by the accused. Oriabure alleged that the deceased was shot, while the passenger managed to escape and reported the matter to a community leader.

    “The passenger who witness the murder, made a report to a community leader; the three hoodlums were caught and taken to the police station,’’ he said.

  • Man charged with killing

    An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos yesterday remanded a 57-year old man, Raphael Agboola, in Ikoyi Prisons for allegedly killing his girlfriend simply identified as Adeola.

    Agboola, who resides on 21, Osoba Close, Itire, Lagos, was arraigned on a one-count charge of murder.

    Chief Magistrate B.O. Ope-Agbe ordered that the defendant be remanded for 30 days, pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP). His plea was not taken because the court cannot try murder.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Jimah Iseghede said the offence was committed on March 15 at the defendant’s residence.

    He said Agboola killed Adeola since he was the last person who saw her.

    Iseghede added that the deceased was Agboola’s lover before she was found dead in front of his house.

    He noted the offence contravened Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 and stipulates life sentence for offenders.

    The matter was adjourned until June 6, pending the receipt of advice from the DPP.

  • Man charged with N1.8m electronics ‘theft’

    A generator repairer, Rafiu Adeyemi, was yesterday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, for alleged conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

    Adeyemi, 38, a resident of Musa Street, Ijoko, Ogun State, allegedly broke into a warehouse and carted away electronics worth N1.8 million.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on September 2, 2014 at Anikulapo Street, Agege, Lagos.

    He said that the accused and one other now at large, burgled the warehouse of one Mr Richard Olumide, and ran away the items.

    Olatunde said: “The accused, a security guard employed by the complainant to guard the warehouse and one Micheal Daniel, (who is still at large) broke into the store of the complainant and stole his goods.

    “The accused stole 22 pieces of different sizes of LG LCD televisions, two pieces of DVD recorders and 20 microwave ovens valued at N1.8million.

    “Adeyemi and his accomplice came with sophisticated weapons, broke the burglary proof and damaged the padlocks and gained access into the store.

    “The complainant went to his warehouse to take inventory after the security guard quit the job, only to discover that his goods had been stolen.’’

    Olatunde said that the complainant received a tip-off from a neighbour that the accused was sighted with a vehicle load of the items.

    Olatunde said that the offence contravened Sections 285, 305 and 410 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted N250, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Magistrate Aka Bashorun adjourned the case till August 26.

  • Ex-Yabatech bursar, two others charged with false accusation

    The Lagos State Government has preferred an eight-count charge of disclosure of official secrets, false accusation and provoking breach of peace against former Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Bursar Olu Ibirogba and two others.

    The others are Charles Akharayi and Samuel Erhunwunse.

    In the charge, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Mrs Idowu Alakija alleged that the defendants conspired to commit the offences between February 26, 2013 and February 25, last year.

    The offences which were allegedly committed at YABATECH, Lagos, contravene Sections 57 (1) (b), 59, 60, 94, 96 (a) (b), 411 (2), 39 (1) and 78 (a) (b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

    The charge claimed that the defendants conspired to “cause injury to the person and reputation of YABATECH Rector Dr Margaret Kudirat Ladipo”.

    Ibirogba alone was accused of impersonating Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Chairman and presented himself to Mrs Ladipo as “Hon A.E.O Akins”.

    Justice Adedayo Akintoye of the Lagos High Court has fixed the defendants’ arraignment for September 29.

    Their arraignment could not hold last Tuesday because of their absence in court, even though the prosecution was present.

    In another development, an Abuja High Court has restrained Ibirogba from further publishing, writing and distributing information of any nature about Yabatech Rector or the Governing Council.

    Ruling on an exparte motion brought by the rector and the council, Justice Valentine Ashi also retrained Ibirogba from granting any interview or causing to be published any statement in any media outfit, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

     

     

  • Two charged with manslaughter

    An  Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos  has ordered that two men – Mathew Imeh (25) and Aliu Salisu (29)  be remanded at the  Ikoyi prison following their arraignment on a  two count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The accused allegedly  conspired to  kill 52 year old Rafiu Baale at Aiye Junction,Mushin /Isolo road on May 7,2015 at about 11am.

    They were said to have pushed  the deceased onto the path of  an on-coming truck  that crushed him to death  in contravention of  Sections 221 and 231 of the criminal law of Lagos state.

    Their plea was not taken.

    Police prosecutor  Elizabeth Ekuma,an Assistant Superintedent of Police (ASP)  asked  the court to remand the accused in prison custody  pending legal advice from the office of the State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

    The presiding Magistrate O.A. Komolafe turned down the bail application of the defense counsel and ordered that the duo be  remanded pending legal advice.

    The case was  adjourned till  August 19.

    Two charged with stealing Card Readers

    Two persons, Ogunleye Eunice, 55, and   Joshua   Odubela, 53, have been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief  Magistrate’s Court for  allegedly being in possession of three card  readers.

    The machines are the property of  the  Independent  National Electoral Commission  (INEC).

    The defendants allegedly stole  the  machines at Salvation Army School, Ayobo Ipaja , Lagos on March 29, 2015.

    The charge sheet reads in part:”That you Ogunleye   Eunice Omolayo ‘f’ and Joshua Odubela Obasa ‘m’ on March 29, 2015 at about  1000hrs at Salvation Army School,Ayobo, Ipaja, in the Lagos magisterial district did have in  your possession  three Card Reader machines reasonably suspected to have been an offence punishable under Section 327 of the Criminal Law  of Lagos State, 2011.”

    The suspects pleaded not guilty.

    The offence according to police prosecutor, Inspector   Richard Odigie, is    punishable under Section 327 of the Criminal Law of Lagos  State 2011.

    The defense counsel, Mr Leke Olatunde applied for the bail   of his client.

    The presiding magistrate, Mrs O.I. Adelaja, admitted the  defendants to bail in  the sum of N200, 000 and two sureties in like  sum.

    The  case adjourned till May 13 for  mention.
