    Charterhouse opens learning outcomes for pupils with hostel launch

    Charterhouse Lagos celebrates a major milestone as it opens its new boarding house and welcomes the first cohort of secondary pupils. It is a new chapter for the first British independent school in Lagos.

    Pupils, parents, and staff were present ahead of the 2025/26 academic year. There was traditional music and dance, creating an atmosphere of joy and anticipation on the school’s expansive campus.

    The event coincided with Charterhouse Lagos’ first anniversary, following launch of its primary school last September. The dual celebration highlighted how far the school has come, from construction to establishing itself as a world-class centre for learning.

    Director of Education, John Todd, reflected shared a timeline of the school’s development and acknowledged the effort behind its success. “Thank you for being part of this journey,” he said. “This school was built on a vision to deliver the best of British education in Lagos, and today’s opening of our boarding house shows just how much we have achieved together in a short time. We are not only creating an outstanding place of learning but also a home where students can be safe, supported, and inspired,” he said.

    Mark Healy, new Head of Secondary, said: “I am proud to be founding Head of Secondary at Charterhouse Lagos. My experience in leading secondary schools in Doha has prepared me for this opportunity to provide world-class education here in Lagos.”

    Parents and pupils toured the facilities, including state-of-the-art classrooms, a fully resourced library, and specialist science laboratories. The day concluded with a community barbecue, offering families the chance to connect and celebrate together.

    Charterhouse Lagos is committed to offering an academically selective British curriculum in a nurturing environment that feels like a second home. With the launch of its boarding house, the school is set to offer pupils exceptional learning opportunities and a supportive space to grow socially and personally.

    Charterhouse Lagos, West Africa’s first British independent school, was officially introduced to the Abuja community at an exclusive evening reception hosted by Richard Montgomery CMG, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria.

    The event, held on Thursday at the High Commissioner’s residence in Maitama, brought together key figures from government, business, education, and the diplomatic community.

    It marked a significant milestone as Charterhouse Lagos combines over 400 years of British educational heritage with Nigeria’s vibrant potential and future.

    Guests were given a glimpse into the school’s vision of providing world-class education to both Nigerian and international students. Richard Montgomery CMG praised the school, calling it an exciting initiative that strengthens educational ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

    He highlighted how Charterhouse Lagos blends British tradition with a modern, global outlook, emphasising the school’s potential to raise educational and leadership standards across West Africa.

    Having opened its Primary School in September of last year, Charterhouse Lagos has garnered recognition for its international teaching staff, commitment to academic excellence, strong focus on character building, and respect for cultural diversity.

    The school is now accepting students for both its Primary School and newly announced Secondary and Boarding School, set to open in September.

    The new Secondary School will welcome students in Years 7 to 9, offering exceptional boarding facilities designed to foster academic, social, and personal growth. John Todd, Director of Education at Charterhouse Lagos, stated that the school is committed to creating future global leaders.

    “Our dream is to nurture students who are not only academically excellent but also confident, compassionate, and ready for a global future,” he said.

    “We have put together an international team of educators, a thoughtful curriculum, and outstanding facilities. Charterhouse Lagos is truly setting a new benchmark for education in Nigeria and the wider region.”

    At the reception were Mr. Mark Healy, Head of Secondary School at Charterhouse Lagos; Ms. Nankling Danfulani, Trade Adviser at the UK Department for International Trade; and Ms. Enitan Olufojude, Marketing Manager at Charterhouse Lagos.

    Charterhouse Lagos hosted Yan Yuqing, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, along with royal delegates, including a representative of the Oba of Lagos, the Obaonikoro of Lagos, and other distinguished guests.

    The event celebrated the school’s commitment to delivering a world-class education while fostering international collaboration and cultural exchange.

     Yuqing highlighted the significance of the partnership, emphasising the shared dedication to advancing education and promoting socio-economic development.

    Chief Adesoji Ajayi-Bembe, speaking on behalf of the Oba of Lagos, reaffirmed the monarchy’s commitment to supporting international investments that drive educational development. “We recognise the vital role institutions like Charterhouse Lagos play in shaping future leaders. The palace remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that foster global collaboration and provide Nigerian children with access to world-class education,” he said.

    Charterhouse Lagos relishes  hosting historic Fencing  World Cup  

    This past weekend, Charterhouse Lagos made history by hosting the U20 Men’s Épée World Cup Fencing event. The first time this prestigious competition has been held in Sub-Saharan Africa. 

    Over 40 talented fencers from 10 countries competed in an electrifying showcase of skill and sportsmanship at the school’s state-of-the-art Sports Hall and Welcome Centre, which were transformed into an international fencing venue for the occasion. 

    The event was a resounding success, bringing together athletes, coaches, and spectators from across the globe to celebrate the artistry and unity of fencing. 

    President of the Nigerian Fencing Federation, Adeyinka Samuel, highlighted the importance of the occasion:  “This was a landmark moment for fencing in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Hosting the U20 Men’s Épée World Cup at Charterhouse Lagos proves that we are ready to embrace the global stage. The passion, energy, and professionalism displayed by everyone involved were truly inspiring.” 

    The Founding Director of Education, Charterhouse Lagos, John Todd, expressed his pride in the event : “We are immensely proud to have been part of this historic occasion. The U20 Men’s Épée World Cup reflects the values of excellence, discipline, and collaboration that we seek to instil. This event has not only elevated the profile of fencing in Nigeria but also demonstrated the potential of our facilities to host world-class events.”

    Charterhouse Lagos, an institution providing world-class education, has hosted a delegation from Lagos State, comprising top officials, who toured its world-class campus.

    ​The delegation included Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Ambrose; Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Bolaji Ogunlende; Commissioner for Basic Education, Tolani Balogun, represented by the ministry’s Director of Policy, Planning, Research and Statistics, Martins Opeyemi; and Head of Investment in Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Suleiman Abolore.

    ​Discussions centred on innovative approaches to enhance educational opportunities for children and youth, equip teachers with advanced skills, and address evolving needs of the educational landscape.
