Team-mates hold memorial service for Tiote in China

Team-mates from past and present gathered for Cheick Tiote’s memorial service on Tuesday following the former Newcastle United player’s shock death earlier in June.

Tiote died while training with Chinese club Beijing Enterprises, and well wishers were given an opportunity to pay their respects to the midfielder during the Beijing service.

The Ivorian’s former Toon team-mate Papiss Cisse was in attendance and couldn’t fight back the tears as he paid tribute to Tiote.

‘I lived some extraordinary moments with this man and today he’s gone,’ Cisse said at the memorial.

The 30-year-old’s body will be flown back to Ivory Coast on Wednesday before a private funeral service is held.

Members of his family, as well as his agent Emanuele Palladino, flew out to China following the shock announcement of his death after he had collapsed while training.

They await the results of a post-mortem, but a suspected heart attack appears the likely cause at this stage.

The news sent shock-waves around the football world and prompted a tide of tributes, most notably from former managers Steve McClaren and Alan Pardew.

With Tiote’s passing coming just little under two months after former Aston Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu died of a cardiac arrest, Andy Cole has questioned whether more could be done to protect players from heart problems.

‘If someone is only 30 and they pass away, the question that is naturally going to be asked is ‘Why? What’s gone on there? Why has he passed away so early?”, Cole told BBC Radio Five Live.

‘It’s a strange one. Cheick Tiote hadn’t been in China that long – a few months – so he must have had a medical to complete the transfer. Was nothing picked up in that medical?

‘Is anything actually being done? Is it being looked into? We need to nail it down and get to the bottom of why and what it is, because it seems to be happening to more and more professional footballers – fit, strong men.’

Cheick Tiote’s young son has made a heartbreaking tribute to his late father by posing for a picture in a Newcastle United shirt with the words ‘RIP Daddy’

Three-year-old Rafael was born to the midfielder and partner Nikki Mpofu during Tiote’s six-and-a-half-year stay on Tyneside.

And following the tragic news of his dad’s passing on Monday, the youngster and his family visited St James’ Park to collect the special shirt.

The images of the child with his father have been widely shared on social media after they were posted on Tuesday, including by Rafael’s mum Nikki.

In two emotional tweets in the hours after news broke of Tiote’s death, she paid tribute to the former Ivory Coast international.

She wrote: ‘Just lost the love of my life. Rest in peace Cheiky’ and ‘What do I tell our son Cheiky? #RIPTiote’.

The 30-year-old passed away in China, where he had been playing for second division outfit Beijing Enterprises.

He was rushed to hospital at 6pm local time on Monday but was pronounced dead at 7pm.

Tiote turned himself into a cult hero during his time at Newcastle, thanks in the main to a stunning equaliser in a 4-4 draw with Arsenal.

He left in February for Asia after more than 150 appearances for the Magpies.

Former Newcastle United player Cheick Tiote has died after collapsing during a training session on Monday.

The Ivorian was training with second-tier Chinese side Beijing Enterprises, who he joined in January, when he passed out and was rushed to hospital.

But emergency treatment failed to revive him, and it was later confirmed that he had passed away.

Tiote’s representative Emanuele Palladino said: “It is with deep sadness that I confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training with his club Beijing Enterprises.

“We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time.

“We ask for all your prayers.”

A statement from Beijing Enterprises also confirmed the news of Tiote’s death.

It read: “At 6pm on June 5th, Mr Cheick Tiote fell unconscious to the ground during training.

“He was immediately taken to hospital, but unfortunately died at 7pm on June 5th. We have informed his relatives of his death.”

Tiote had been a mainstay for Beijing Enterprises, starting all 11 matches to date this season.

On Saturday, the 30-year-old helped his team secure a 4-2 victory against Baoding Ronda.

The midfielder started his career in Belgium with Anderlecht and also represented Twente and Roda JC in the Netherlands, as well as making 52 international appearances for Ivory Coast.

Cheick Tiote has completed his move from Newcastle to Chinese second tier side Beijing BG.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who has four months left on contract, travelled to China late last week after agreeing terms on the move.

Tiote had offers from Sporting Gijon and Premier League sides during January but has opted on a move to China instead.

The Ivorian joined the Magpies in July 2010 but with his current deal running out this summer, he is now undergoing a medical at the Chinese side.

Tiote, who was desperate to leave to secure a long-term contract away from Tyneside, made just three appearances in all competitions for Newcastle this season.

He last featured in an FA Cup win over Birmingham on January 18, and Rafa Benitiez had blocked the sale of the midfielder until at least after the third round replay with the Blues.
